good afternoon. an inmate was diagnosed with legionnaire's disease and dozens of others are showing symptoms. legionnaire's is a severe form of pneumonia caused by a bacteria found in water systems. the water will be shut off until the cause the of the disease is found. right now there are over 3500 inmates at san quentin. >> there are too many guns in america and there's clearly too many guns in the wrong hands. >> the governor of virginia offers his support to the local cbs station days after the deadly on air shooting of a tv news cruel. a medical examiner says reporter alison parker and adam ward suffered gunshot wounds to the head in wednesday's attacks. their deaths have been declared a homicide of course. authority say the gunman was acting alone. the plaza where the tv crew was gunned down has reopened. cbs reporter craig boswell is in minute net it, virginia, where people are trying to move on but they say the victims of

wednesday's ambush will not be forgotten. >> reporter: bridgewater plaza reopened this morning in moneta, virginia, for the first time sings the murder of two young journalists. -- since the murder of two young journalists. >> it's been a long two days and i was happy to get back here this morning. >> reporter: at the entrance to the shopping center, well- wishers are leaving flowers and mementos at a memorial for reporter alison parker and cameraman adam ward. a realtor is taking it hard. the murders happened right outside his business. >> it hit me as soon as i hit the parking lot. that -- [ pause ] >> young lady was only 24 years old. [ crying ] >> prime of her life. some idiot takes her out. >> reporter: parker and ward were ambushed during an interview about tourism in the area. people here say the two victims won't be forgotten. investigators say the killer vester flanagan tried to get

away with gun, ammo, license plates and disguise. flanagan a former reporter at wdbj who went by the name of bryce williams later killed himself after a police chase. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: dozens gathered outside the cbs affiliate in roanoke thursday night for a stop the violence candlelight vigil. as life slowly returns to normal in the community, many hope the deaths of these two young coworkers cut down in their prime will bring some change. craig boswell, cbs news, moneta, virginia. a funeral will be held for adam ward on tuesday. the third victim, who alison parker was interviewing at the time, lost a kidney and part of her colon. her husband says she has a long recovery in front of her. researchers are performing a necropsy on the dead whale found in the oakland estuary. it was a bluefin whale which is a larger kind of whale. it's hang on angel island. new developments in the case against the livermore man

accused of driving drunk and killing a mother and baby. kpix 5's anne makovec with the courtroom drama. >> reporter: the defendant did not show up in court today. he didn't need to. his lawyer spoke for him. but once again the victim's family showed up in court. >> murderer, killer! >> reporter: this is what brian jones faced the last time he came to court chants of murderer. he is accused of drunk driving in may and killing a mother and baby. esperanza morales-rodriguez and her daughter are from seaside visiting friends in livermore when police say jones crashed into them with his corvette. his blood alcohol level .14%. he had just level a wine festival. he bailed out. 20 family members showed up in court today. >> we are going to see justice. and we miss our family.

every, single day we miss them. >> reporter: jones has pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and dui. the next hearing in this case in alameda county superior court is set for september 16. in pleasanton, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> livermore police said that jones had a prior arrest for drunk driving and pleaded to a reckless driving charge in that case. today a jeung will go over how to -- judge will go over how to split up the estate of robin williams. the children say the wife is cheating them. williams killed himself in august. a chase in san francisco started in santa clara about 3:30 a.m. and stopped on northbound 101 south of candlestick. a man and a woman were driving the car which turned out to be stolen and both already had felony warrants issued for the possession of stolen property. now they are in jail. a san jose woman who was on her regular morning walk is dead killed by a hit-and-run

driver. it happened around 7 a.m. yesterday off tully east of 101. the driver is still on the loose. and kpix 5's kiet do has that story. >> reporter: laura reyes was out on her morning walk something she does every day. but this time, she didn't come home. >> every morning she did, you know, for her own health and she actually i told her, um, wait a couple more weeks and i'll join you every day. >> reporter: yesterday morning police investigated a hit-and- run near welch park and tully. a red mitsubishi reported stolen two days ago was found abandoned a few blocks away. tires blown out, the windshield and hood bashed in from the impact. the force of the crash sent laura into the intersection. >> i have a headache, upset stomach. i'm thinking over and over like i can't believe it, i can't believe it. >> reporter: she says laura had been living at home for a year taking classes at de anza college with the hopes of becoming certified to run her

own daycare center. laura's husband lives at the home too. >> he loved her a lot. he doesn't know how he is going to do it, he doesn't know you know -- she was everything for him. so he's really destroyed too. >> reporter: kiet do, kpix 5. >> investigators are combing through traffic surveillance camera footage for clues and they are asking anybody with anyone to call police. investigators in alameda are trying to track down an arsonist before another building goes up in flames. seven fires broke out at the old alameda naval air station yesterday including one in a recycling cage on ferry point. five of them were set over the course of just 20 minutes within a four-block diameter. today workers at a craft studio are cleaning up the mess left behind by the flames and the water used to put them out. >> one of our tenants was, you know, lost his business, we are going to make it good to him right away. we're all little guys here, really little guys. and we need to work. so we have to get up and going.

>> the only good news, nobody was injured by the flames. employees golfing while on the job, abuses of state resources. kpix 5's maria medina reports those are just some of the findings of an audit into more than half a dozen state agencies. >> reporter: caltrans is one of the agencies under fire. the audit found caltrans management approved the time sheet of one engineer who played 55 rounds of golf on workdays over a 19-month period. it was also revealed that california's prison healthcare operator cost taxpayers $3 million by paying a contractor to just do paperwork. >> we believe that there are some bigs that should have provided more -- billings that should have provided more specificity. we are training the staff to be sure the bill something clear in the future. >> reporter: the audit has

produced changes. maria medina, kpix 5. >> that audit found more than $4 million in waste at more than half dozen state agencies. muni announced that some commuters-friendly changes are about to happen. several routes are redesigned to make better connections to some popular spots. and more trains and buses will be added on the busiest routes. the changes take effect on september 26. if you are taking the ferry take more time. riders are being warned about delays of up to 15 minutes on the golden gate ferry today. and throughout the weekend. it's so crews can continue retrofitting the berths at the san francisco ferry terminal. a policy will allow uber and lyft and rideshare companies to pick up and drop off passengers at the airport through february 2016. sfo plans to use the program to examine how rideshare services will impact traffic at the airport. and how sweet it isn't.

welcome back. heart murmurs are a common ailment for dogs and one breed in particular. not mine but apparently these and, of course, i have our expert dr. jill chase. always happy to see you, jill. >> hi. >> this is lucy. >> they lucy. she is a cavalier king charles spaniel and along with some other breeds, they are prone to developing my central valve disease. so basically, a murmur is when we listen to their heart and we hear a sound other than bump, bump, we hear a whoosh. the heart is a pump. it has four chambers and if the blood moves through it should moot through smoothly. if it doesn't we'll -- -- it should move smoothly. >> do they develop this problem or is it something they have from birth? >> this particular dog seems

to develop damage to their valves as they age. you could do valve surgery. most don't. there's different types of reasons for valve disease is one. sometimes dogs have cardiomyopathy a fancy word for muscle abnormality of the heart so it doesn't contract well and the blood isn't moving smoothly and so there is a heart murmur. >> other dogs get it. so if dogs develop murmurs, what's the prescription? just take it easy? >> no. what should happen is chest x- rays and a heart ultrasound and the reason we do both is because the x-rays kind of are like a photograph. we can see the size and check the lungs and other structures in the chest. ultrasound shows the heart like a pregnant woman can see the

baby. we can see how well the heart is contracting and the valves. we have medications that -- heart disease is considered a progressive disease so it will continue to progress overtime but we can slow it down with medication. >> and extend life. >> yes. >> very quickly, i have heard about flea explosion in the bay area? are you notices that? >> right. we have chatted about that before. it bears repeating. we have not had the cold weather that usually makes the fleas go dormant over the last three years so we do have a big flea problem. people think that advantage and front line are not working but they are. remember that those products all they do is kill the fleas that jump on the dogs. but the dogs are still getting bit. so they are still going to be super itchy and honestly the -- efforts should be toward getting rid of the fleas in the environment. >> thank you, dr. jill chase, a lot of fun and these two guys are getting along well. we'll go for a walk after the show we invite all you pet lovers send us your questions about their health and well- being. just email pets@kpix.com or on our facebook page, and we'll have our pet expert give you an answer every friday right here at noon. that's an update on your pets. now an update on weather.

here's roberta. >> yes. because it's the dog days of summer, right? i have to tell you right now, my dog roxy is hat home getting very jealous -- is at home getting very jealous, not included here today. we have a lot of people checking in this afternoon. i'm feeling the love with my weather watcher, about 13 different reports at this hour ranging from the 80s to the 90s. let's take a look at that there. 98 degrees says brian in san ramon. it is a hot one in our inland areas. temperatures from 81 in foster city to 95 in novato. thanks to our weather watchers for those reports. even though we are seeing increasing clouds we have a thin layer of cloudiness now. here's another peek at notable numbers. 89 in san jose. it is 80 in oakland. the coast is not so clear but we do have some sunshine. we have high, thin cirrus clouds anywhere from sausalito towards san francisco, as well. and as we take another view, this time around, we are looking out from the lawrence hall of science at the university of california in berkeley, we do see again it's

like milky conditions across the horizon. warm to hot temperatures inland. big change for the weekend coming up because of this right here. area of low pressure. we have been talking about this since monday. it's now producing some very light scattered rain showers across that northwestern section of the state of california. high pressure still in command and that's what's bringing us the warm to hot conditions. but meanwhile, big time weather change not only for us in the state of california, but throughout the 48 contiguous states. high pressure is now building in from the south diverting the jet stream to the north. and that's going to allow some subtle changes for the east coast. i'll allude to that momentarily. but right now we are going to stay mild after tomorrow for a week. 97 in sacramento today. 83 with a fire weather watch in effect for the weekend for the high sierra. 78 degrees in monterey. we have a sunset tonight at 7:55. sunrise at 6:31.

we have temperatures today from the 70s at the coast to the 80s around the central bay. 80s and 90s around the peninsula. approaching 90 in san jose. 95 morgan hill. 96 in gilroy. and 90s common to the east. 80s, 90s to the north. here's your forecast. because of that area of low pressure to the north, a 20% chance of that low nicking the far reaches of the north bay. otherwise, some dry mild conditions from sunday through thursday. we have a big giants soccer game tonight, beat l.a.! it's in san jose at avaya stadium and i'll be there. >> seems like fun. bring your dog next time. >> she didn't get the invitation. >> next friday at noon. florida is under a state of emergency as tropical storm erika barrels toward the state. she claimed 20 lives on the caribbean island of dominica yesterday. today the storm is bearing down on puerto rico with wind speeds of 50 miles an hour. the real problem is rain. forecasters expect it to hit
