live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. a transmission tower bent over, high power electrical lines strewn across highway 101 on the peninsula. the hours long freeway closure that caused a monumental traffic backup. and good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> this is a special edition of kpix news. the 49ers are playing the boston broncos at 6:00 tonight. traffic start the moving on southbound 101 just before 2:30 this afternoon. chopper 5 shows us cars beginning to move after that side of the freeway was cleared. again that southbound, the lanes had been closed for 17 hours. a little more than an hour ago,

three northbound lanes reopened as well. two lanes are still closed to make room for repair crews. the drama began at 9:30 last night with construction equipment slammed into the tower. the freeway was closed in both directions between the boulevard. >> those who didn't get the message about the freeway closure were stuck in this. chopper 5 showing the traffic backup for miles and this is highway 101 in burrellinggame going north. cars are being taken off the freeway. kpix5 is in burrellinggame, so how are things looking now, andrea? >> brian and juliette, you can see the construction going on. here are three things that are nearly always a sign of trouble. highway 101 completely empty. a transmission line suspended above the asphalt and this, a

high power tower bent in half, enough to twist the warped metal. >> loud explosion, and fire works. we all ran for cover. not knowing what was going on. >> that was the beginning of what will turn out to be a nearly 18 hour long nightmare. it was around 9:30 p.m. when a caltrans contractor working on the broadway interchange project hit the tower. that's what shannon mcginess heard. noticed two immediate brief power blitz, but the real problem was on the road. four live transmission lines landed on the roadway, backing up traffic for miles and hours with people parking and turning off their engines, leaving some to jump fences and drive the wrong way to escape the gridlock. >> something we are very surprised and thankful. >> pg&e was deenergizing the lines. the utility line says their people were on scene in ten minutes. >> we have all the right people

in the right places responding accordingly, we do with the job of this magnitude, we do need to have specialized equipment, materials, personal and vehicles in order to make the necessary repairs. >> the electrical grid had redundancies to make sure the power stays on, even in the face of a mass of mangled metal. >> in order to do so, it will take an incredible amount of work. this is not a routine outage. >> pg&e is calling this a temporary fix at this point. more permanent work will be need to be done to repair these lines. they will do that in off hours so people are not on the roads and moving around. andrea, kpix5. >> the accident caused lights to flicker in many parts of the bay area, including at&t park during the giants game. watch as the score board goes out. it caused momentary confusion.

the play was not disrupted. >> the closure had ripple effects on traffic all over the bay area. you can see the toll plaza earlier today. traffic is always backed up. traffic was backed up on 580. the east shore freeway was also backed up all the way into richmond. >> eastbound traffic was bad enough, but wait until you see what it it was like in the area of the closure. as mark kelly shows us, tempers flared. >> not every day the 101 on ramp is car-free, but for drivers today, this wasn't interesting, it was just plain old annoying. >> two hours, traffic is not slow, it is stopped. >> and susan hall was stopped in it. late for her boyfriend's birthday party in san francisco, she bailed off 101 hoping it would be faster. only problem, many others had that same. rial was more like parking lot.

>> i called my brother, i said i'm going to be late, i'm sorry, and i'm stressing out. >> they told me to get off and then i saw parts of the city i've never seen before. >> for joann, the 101 closure made her late for her very important date. a tea party with friends in the city. >> there was someone honking. there was some stress and confusion. traffic everywhere. there was no way to avoid it. >> joann got on public transit to speed up the commute. many wish that today they steered clear of 101 all together. >> i should always check the traffic first, and i don't. >> check channel 5 in the morning. >> yes, i will now. >> mark kelly, kpix5. >> good advice. by the way, much of the bay area woke up to this as we switch gears. damp sidewalks and water droplets, however microscopic on cars. light rain this morning in many areas, north bay had more than a tenth tenth of an inch of rain in some spots and then a sticky situation unusual

humidity in the bay area today, as we look at the golden gate bridge. the numbers are fairly warm, if you look at the satellite image, a weak cold front, injected moisture into the area mixed with the mild temperatures. the result, relatively high humidity. high by california standards anyway. we're going to be looking for a persistent westerly to dry us out, so not as humid, and have the complete forecast coming up for you in just a few minutes. and this was the scene ten years ago today in new orleans when hurricane katrina slammed into shore. more than 1200 people died during the storm and the flooding that followed. it was called the costliest natural disaster in the history of united states. $108billion. a reporter is live in new orleans tonight with how the city is vowing to keep pushing ahead. >> juliette, this is such a personal day for so many. some people wanted to reflect,

others got together at parks to celebrate how much progress the city has made. to mississippi, to the lower 9th ward in new orleans. the victims of hurricane katrina were honored saturday. >> katrina was so heartbroken. it destroyed so much. it destroyed so many lives. >> the gulf coast is reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the monster storm, which flooded 80% of new orleans and killed more than 1800 people. >> let's be clear. today is about the commemoration, specifically, we have to remember. but as soon as we finish this, we are going to get back to work. 10,000 ,000 volunteers on the streets today. >> thousands of volunteers are working with 100 rebuilding projects like planting this community garden. >> they are working hard. they are all very nice, and we

are all building a relationship. >> many young people are getting involved, too, determined to help shape the new new orleans. >> my favorite thing to make, will -- >> not long ago, 19-year-old, delvin davis was considered an at risk youth. >> you see everywhere. >> he escaped their streets in the work force training program. students run a restaurant called cafe reconcile. he also mentors children and he's optimistic about the future. >> i have to believe in my city. >> a city remembering a dark path, but charging ahead with resounding resilience. and just a short time ago, former president bill clinton wrapped up a huge event. another toast on how far the city has come. there are places that are struggling to recover. the hardest hit community. brian, juliette. >> what changes have they made

in public safety? what have they seen in the ten years? >> the most notable one is a brand-new levee system. it cost $14.5 billion. we saw it from a chopper, you can see so many lines over the fence. there's a brand-new surge barrier that is 2 miles long. hundreds of new flood gates and the flood walls is more than twice as high as it used to be. they are also bringing in natural barriers to use that component as well. but engineers say even though they are a lot safer, they are not invincible, they will continue to make improvements. >> all right, thank you. people in florida are preparing for what was tropical storm erika. the storm is losing strength, but it's expected to bring a lot of rain to south florida. a state of emergency remains in place. rick scott has a warning for beach goers. >> if you're going to the beaches, looks like a beautiful day. watch the flag. there's rip currents.

especially watch what's going on out there. be careful. >> obviously, the national guard is prepared and ready to mobilize if needed. erika caused huge problems on the tiny caribbean island. at least 20 people were killed, 50 are still missing in puerto rico. erika knocked out power to more than 200,000 people. erika will be centered over cuba by 11:00 tonight, winds are below tropical storm force. >> in other news, dozens of inmates are under observation tonight after a prisoner was diagnosed with legion airs disease. three other inmates are hospitalized with pneumonia- like symptoms. another 45 are being monitored for respiratory symptoms. a severe form of bacterial pneumonia spread through water symptoms. the prison brought in portable showers and drinking water while it works to flush out the bacteria.

>> while officials in marin are taking cyclists to take it easy. it's been open a week and eight cyclists have been hurt. the injuries range from cuts and scrapes to broken bones. some injuries are to be expected with this kind of thing, but they are warning cyclists to obey the posted rules and know their own limits. a sound, this man won't soon forget. what he knew he had to do when he discovered this. a burning car with a baby inside. >> and lucky doesn't begin to describe a bay area man. how a walk after dinner and $20,

the sequel to the classic and bacon & swiss, topped with the same melted garlic herb butter, plus portobello mushrooms and grilled onions. spoiler alert: it's awesome. a man is under arrest for killing a sheriff deputy at a gas station near houston. police have released this surveillance photo from the station. it's of the suspect who appears to be holding a gun in his right hand. the deputy was pumping gas when investigators came up from behind him and without saying a word, shot him multiple times and he got in the car and sped off. after a man hunt, the shooting has left the community at a loss for words. >> well, it strikes up in the heart, simply be a target because you wear a badge and for no other reason, hits you where you live. >> are officers vulnerable while pumping gas? >> officers are vulnerable a lot of times. simply walking to the back of your car after pumping gas

would be one of them. >> the suspect is facing capital murder charges. he's a 30-year-old man with a criminal record. >> there's also been an arrest in the deadly bombings in thailand. police put out a picture of the suspect. at first, they thought he was from turkey, but now they aren't sure. he had two turkish passports, police say they were fake. investigators think he's part of some sort of terror network. they point out he's not the man in surveillance video that was identified as the main suspect. the blast two weeks ago killed 20 people. most of the victims were tourists. police say they did find bomb making materials in the suspect's apartment. a man didn't think twice when he heard a baby's cries coming from a burning suv. it burst into flames when the live wires fell on top of it. the noise woke jose sanchez up.

>> i could hear the baby crying. the wires were up over the suv, i ducked under those, got in there. got next to the door that was open, the baby is on the ground. >> the baby was not hurt. he couldn't reach the two adults inside the suv. the coroner is working to identify them. >> still to come, happier news, a bay area man has a story of a lifetime. what he found on the ground that got him a million dollars richer. and as we look toward oakland on a fairly nice day, there are changes ahead for the bay area. we have ,,,,,,,,,,,,

updating our top story now. highway 101 is back open in burrelling game tonight. power lines fell across the freeway when a construction crew hit a tower. it took 18 hours to get it all cleared. pg&e had to bring in special equipment to deal with the power lines to make sure no one got lek electrocuted. people were stuck on the freeway for hours. highway 101, burrellinggame is back open after an 18 hour closure. also a reminder, bart is closing the transbay tube over labor day weekend, that's next weekend. this will be the second and final shutdown of the tunnel. crews are finishing the work they started last month replacing a key section of crossover track near west oakland. no trains will travel between

san francisco and the east bay while this being done, during the closure, bart is offering bus bridge for commuters. and getting a green upgrade. the transportation agency announced it will get 30 new and more eco friendly buses next month. the buses will run on a hybrid engine and seven new 60-foot buses. transportation officials say the buses will improve travel times and add new connections to more places. all right, it is something we've all dreamed of. winning the lottery. one bay area man did, and wait until you hear how easy it was. >> have you ever been so full after dinner you needed to take a walk around the block? hubert knows the feeling. >> i noticed something on the floor, it was green, we picked it up and it was a $20 bill. >> that was wednesday night. with $20 fresh in hand, he bought two $1 million scratch tickets. >> i took out my car keys, i

erica was 24 hours ago a hurricane, but it got into the unfriendly waters, unfriendly for humans, anyway, of the caribbean. downgraded to just a tropical wave right now. so just the remnant of erika. a lot of rain can unwind for one of these storms, especially as it moves over cuba, and then up into the waters of the gulf, could regain a little bit of fuel in its tank and upgraded to a tropical storm again by the time it touches down around the panhandle of florida by wednesday at 2:00 in the morning eastern time. so we'll see, it will be slow moving and the slower they move, the more rain. a lot of rain potential for western florida. here's how the golden gate bridge looks right now. the numbers warm in concord. 81 degrees. in san francisco, very mild. 72 degrees. humid weather today, will give way to low pressure, low clouds along the shoreline and along

the east bay shoreline. and then, fairly clear day tomorrow, so sunday looks nice and sunny, after -- they get rain. mild inland and cool along the shoreline, and a little bit dryer tomorrow. so more coastal clouds for sunday morning. sunny and mild inland and relatively cool week ahead. relatively cool. nice inland, but grand prix tomorrow, sunday at the sonoma raceway, 78 degrees for all the fans. overnight lows tonight, we're going to be looking near 60 degrees and mostly clear skies can san francisco at 60 tomorrow. down in the south bay, upper 70s to a few low 80s. 81 at los altos. and san jose, very nice. 79 degrees. the temperatures top out at 4:00 in the afternoon near 80 degrees at walnut creek. 88 at brentwood and 82 degrees in livermore. 76 for petaluma. nice and sunny in santa rosa.

looking good at 73. oakland 75. here until in the city, 84 at lake port. in the extended forecast, we're going to be looking for partly cloudy skies, a few low clouds at the shoreline and mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. monday, things warm a little bit in the mid 80 s, but there's not a drop of rain in sight. low pressure hangs offshore. that will give us fairly mild readings and as we toward the ladder half, mid 70s and mid 60s at the shoreline. as far as the weather goes, it is at least not going to the dogs. >> that's right, thinking of a name for your new pup, if it's bella, she may not be all that unique. bella is the most popular name for dogs nationwide this year. in santa cruz county alone, licensing data says there are 133 registered bella dogs.
