mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. let's go straight to roberta gonzales with a look at how hot it is right know. >> where you want to head today is to the beach definitely because this is the only area that's not under a heat advisory for this tuesday september 8. take a look at livermore already 94 degrees. the relative humidity is now below 10%. it is 89 degrees in concord. at this lunch hour, it is 80 in san francisco when the average high is 69 degrees. in addition to the heat advisory today, we have our fifth "spare the air" day of the summer season. affects those in the highlighted areas. this is why we have a heat advisory. how much is it going up to today? by 26 in some neighborhoods, over 100 around in the peninsula, south and east bay, 105 in petaluma. one of the hottest locations today, kpix 5's cate caugiran is there with ways to beat the heat. >> reporter: a late summer

enough to enjoy some waves. and for a check on the temperatures where you live and for the latest weather advisories, just head to our website, cbssf.com. search crews have recovered a body near angel island. officials have not confirmed the victim's identity but the coast guard and other agencies have been searching the area for 42-year-old wouter van lier since yesterday. his wife thinks he might have gone hiking during a camping trip. he was last seen on a boat near angel island about 1 p.m. yesterday morning. tiburon police department confirms that the body discovered was in the water near his boat. an out of service muni bus briefly blocked a lane of traffic on 101 this morning when it overheated and caught fire. you can see drivers carefully navigating around the smoke and the flames near the cesar chavez street off-ramp. the driver was the only person on board when the fire started and was not hurt. two people are being treated for wounds after a

shooting outside a san francisco transit hub. the shooting shattered the glass of a bus stop on mission street last night. san francisco police say one man was shot in the torso. the other was shot in the foot. police are seeking suspects and trying to determine motive. some neighbors say they heard it may have been gang-related. >> he was telling me, he was explaining to me that there were two people who were wearing red and some people from down the -- couple blocks down wearingblue drove up and shot them. >> two men were shot in the same part of san francisco less than a month ago. three santa clara jail deputies due in court in an hour will learn if they will face murder charges for allegedly beating an inmate to death last mont. kpix 5's keit do on the evidence building the prosecutors case. >> reporter: the district attorney's office has had five days to look over the sheriff's report, who is recommending murder charges. the final call is up to the d.a. now, later on today we'll be

getting a first look at the three men during their court arraignment. the three, rafael rodriguez, jereh lubin and matthew farris, of the three only rodriguez told the "mercury news" he didn't do it and doesn't know how the inmate was killed. inmate michael james tyree was found in his cell naked unconscious covered in vomit and feces on august 27. the coroner said he had lacerations to the spleen and liver and died of massive internal bleeding. the deputies were conducting a clothing search with other inmates locked in for the night. sources say the deputies became violent when tyree refused to take his medication. investigators say there is surveillance video showing the three deputies entering the cell about an hour before he was found dead. >> i'm unable to digs close all of the evidence that points to the culpability of these three individuals. but it's unmistakable that jereh lubin, matthew farris and rafael rodriguez committed this cowardly and heinous act

trump. the kentucky clerk who was jailed last week for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples set to be released today. kim davis was jailed over the weekend after defying the supreme court's ruling on same- sex marriage saying it was against her religion. the issue has entered the political arena with mike huckabee and ted cruz headed to kentucky to support her. pope francis is making it easier for catholics to get annulments allowing local bishops to handle applications if neither spouse disputes t annulments are various impediments. catholics must get an annulment if they want to remarry. the pope will address the congress later this month. the address is thursday september 24. the woman who survived an

on air shooting that killed two tv journalists has been released from the hospital. vicki gardner was being interviewed live about community development when gunfire erupted. reporter alison parker and cameraman adam ward died. a disgruntled former employee of the tv station killed himself after a police chase. a family has reached a settlement with the city. it would pay freddie gray's family $6.4 million for his death in police custody in april. it sparked days of unrest and protests nationwide. six cops are charged in the death, all pled not guilty. super bowl 50 invading the bay area. san francisco gets in the spirit with a little ferry building makeover. >> and count down to colbert, how stephen colbert is changing

canizaro a new decoration on san francisco ferry building. a huge 40-foot banner was unveiled below the west side of the building there. it says it all. super bowl 50 is coming to the bay area. two brave climbers rappelled down the 250-foot tower to affix it to cables. it took two hours to lash it to the building. it's part of the transformation under way at the foot of market street where a kickoff concert is planned for this thursday afternoon. of course, kpix 5 is your home for super bowl 50. it's now just 152 days away. and the football season opens up thursday night. so bring it on!

from mount hamilton at the lick observatory. here's the coast ocean beach where the coast is clear. sausalito looking out towards san francisco. visibility is unlimited at this particular time. and one more stop this time around at the university of california berkeley lawrence hall of science. we have a heat wave all week, very dry conditions and high fire danger. this right here you see that? that is what an offshore flow looks like. no marine layer in sight at all. high pressure is building in. as it does so that's where we see that north and northeast flow so no marine layer to cool us off. we are hoping, keeping our fingers crossed, we'll see the return of the marine layer by late sunday afternoon. until then, minimal relief each and every day. right now, it is at 88 degrees in sacramento going up to one one. it is in the 70s going to 84 in lake tahoe. we just surpassed our forecast high in monterey at 87 degrees there going up to 85 degrees. sun will set by 7:29. i think we'll be very happy by

you know, i did a tip on red cluster tomatoes but orange ones this time of year even though there's heirloom tomatoes, i still buy these. they give wonderful flavor, nutritional value and the colors, you just can't beat. selection and storage is very important. when you buy them you want to make sure the stem is green. the greener the stem they are still pulling nutrients from the stem, the better and fresh the tomatoes will be. make sure they are bright orange. when you bring them home, store them on the counter, not in the refrigerator. now, orange tomatoes have a high water content to them on the inside. so if you are going to cut them up, use them right away. if you cut them up for a salad and let it sit it will be get watery. when you buy them, enjoy them right away. can't beat. that orange cluster tomatoes. and they smell great. but i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy.

minnesota dentist who killed a lion in zimbabwe returned to work for the first time in months. >> cbs reporter david begnaud reports from bloomington, minnesota. reporter: protestors shouted extradite palmer as the dentist who killed a lion returned to his office in minnesota for the first time since sparking an international outcry. >> he's despicable! he is a killer! he is a murderer! how many lions do we have left? do you have to kill them all? >> reporter: walter palmer had temporarily closed his dental practice in bloomington after the incident triggered a massive social media backlash. in an interview over the weekend, he said, quote, if i had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study, obviously i wouldn't have taken it. only a handful of protestors turned out to see palmer's return. it was much smaller than previous demonstrations. there was one woman who showed up as a supporter. >> we're worried about a lion?
