welcome to "cbs this morning." charlie rose and norah o'donnell are both on assignment. we've got you covered, john dickerson of face the nation is here. welcome. and as you wake up in the west, people around phoenix are driving to work in fear after a series of apparently random highway shootings. one or manufacture domestic terrorists could be targeting drivers. ten shootings have been reported in nearly two weeks. >> no one has been seriously hurt. most of the gun fire happened along the busy interstate 10. our affiliate is in phoenix. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. each of these incidents have happened along the i-10. it's a freeway that cuts through the heart of phoenix. shootings acts of domestic terrorism. >> got hit in the windshield by something too. >> reporter: ten cars hit in 11 days. fbi and atf agents are joining

police in arizona to find out who has been targeting the drivers in phoenix. the latest incident was reported on wednesday when this pickup was hit near a gas station. no one was hurt. >> it's a matter of time, if this behavior continues, that we have tragedy on our roadway. >> reporter: frank mill stead said they don't know how or if they're all connected. >> i don't know if this is a copy cat crime, if it's multiple people that are involved in this type of insanity. i mean because somebody will get hurt or somebody will get killed if this continues. >> reporter: the shootings have occurred along the busy i-10 corridor between downtown phoenix and the edge of the valley. a distance of ten miles. last week a 13-year-old girl was hurt by the shattered windshield of a car. another bullet pierced a tour bust. on tuesday, a phoenix police

officer's personal car was hit. >> why would anybody shoot at anyone at all. especially to shoot at an innocent person that's insane. >> reporter: arizona residents are living in fear. >> it makes me more cautious to be in that stretch, and for everybody else. very scary and horrible. i hope the they catch the person. >> reporter: investigators are calling this a real and continues threat to arizona motorists. there's a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the shooter or shooters. a new poll this morning shows donald trump has a commanding and widening lead in the gop presidential race. the cnn survey finds trump ahead with 32%. that's an 8% gain in the last month. ben carson is second at 19%. major garrett is in washington where trump fired up conservatives on wednesday and then stirred up criticism.

good morning. >> donald trump came to the nation's capitol to criticize the nuclear deal with iran. but just after that he took fire from gop opponents one for belittling carly fiorina and for ben carson who is running just behind trump for what he considers the billionaire's lack of religious faith. in a rolling stone sper view trump said this when watching car lie fiorina on television. would anyone vote for that, can you imagine that, the face of our next president. adding, she's a woman and i'm not supposed to say bad things but really folks, come on, are we serious. fiorina addressed the issue on fox's the kelly file. >> what do you take that to mean, look at that face, would anyone vote for that. >> i have no idea. you know, honestlily, i'm not going to spend a single cycle wondering what donald trump means. but maybe i'm getting under his skin a little bit because i'm climb in the polls.

>> ben carson, a neurosurgeon and seventh-day adventist who talks openly about his faith took a rare swipe at trump saying they differ in their approach to god. >> i realize where my successes come from and i don't in any way deny my faith in god. >> trump addressed carson on twitter. wow, i'm ahead of the field with evangelicals, am so proud of this. and virtually every other group and ben carson just took a swipe at me. >> we are going to turn this country around. >> meanwhile trump rallied tea party republicans at a capitol hill event opposing the nuclear deal with iran. >> let me tell you, i don't taltalk i don't want to say things that the other side is going to learn everything about me. do you understand that? that's part of the problem. everything is talk in this country. >> that new poll showing trump above 30% also indicated he gained support in august among

republican women. with support for trump rising from 20% to 33%. it's one poll and was taken before trump's comments abfiorina. but it suggests that trump finished the summer with a flourish. more democrats are turning away from hillary clinton according to another poll this morning. it showed vermont senator bernie sanders is tied with clinton in iowa. 41% to 40%. vice president joe biden still deciding if he will run is still far behind. nancy cordes is in washington with a look at the numbers. >> this is a huge reversal for clinton and sanders. in the last poll in iowa taken in july, she was leading him 52% to 33%. and in another poll in iowa this week, still gave her an 11-point lead. but now that lead appears to have been erase pd. interestingly if you look at the numbers, the shift appears to have less to do with clinton and her e-mail troubles and more to

do with people increasingly taking sanders and his message seriously. clinton's favorability in the poll is 76% and sanders is 78%. the most important thing is a candidate with that is closest to them on the issues. but the way, this is the same phenomenon we're seeing play out in new hampshire where the recent polls show sanders leading by anywhere from 7% to 11%. the clinton campaign will say voter wills starting caring more about electability as we get closer to the polls. >> her e-mail controversy is not over yet, right? >> republicans are calling the i.t. stamper who set up her server before the house benghazi committee at 10:00 a.m. today. brian pagliano said he plans to

plead the fifth. catastrophic flood waters are rising in japan after days of heavy rain. people are literally crying for help and stranded on top of cars and homes. the force was strong enough to rip buildings from their foundations. this unprecedented rain hit a city north of tokyo. seth, good morning. >> reporter: japan has been pounded with heavy rain for two days in a row causing flooding and landslides. some called from rooftops for help as the water rose. and as rescuers pulled dozens to safety. entire homes for surrounded or even carried away as the city was inundated with flood water. the nearby river burst its banks pouring through a flood wall sending a torrent of water through the city of 65,000, about an hour's drive north of

tokyo. residents tried to save some belongings or navigate through the flood waters in tiny boats. the deluge is a result of a low pressure system that's the tail end of a tropical storm passing through japan. the fear is more rivers could overflow and rain could trigger more landslides. one already buried a home. japanese prime minister zin do abe called the heavy rains unprecedented adding the priority now is saving lives. >> reporter: night have fallen here in this part of the world and authorities say it will likely be days before the flood waters recede. this is the 18th typhoon to hit japan this year. >> seth doane in beijing. thank you. new information this morning showing how close british airways came to disaster in las vegas. the plane aborted its takeoff on tuesday when its left engine

started burning. all people on board managed to get out. we're live at the airport where an investigation is under way. maria, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. even though the british airways plane you see behind me that was speeding down the runway, the pilot was able to stop the momentum. we're told he was getting ready to retire next week and now being praised with avoiding a potential disaster. the engine and fire specials are taking a close look at the charred 777 boeing. it was reaching up to 100 miems an hour when the pilot suddenly hit the brakes. one of the plane's two engines was on fire. >> everyone is trying to get to the right hand side of the plane. people are panicking. a woman in front of us fell on the floor. she was getting stomped on.

>> reporter: he said that the smoke and the flames complicated their evacuations. you're talking to me a little bit about having to go from exit to exit. this is a chaotic situation. >> it was bad. a lot of screaming, shouting. >> reporter: the captain was at the helm. his daughter chaur live told the newspaper this was supposed to be one of his last flights. i hope he gets to fly again before he retires so he ends on a high. >> reporter: 27 people were treated and released from the hospital, including 13 you members from the british airways plane. >> thank you mireya. this morning the u.s. and nato are watching russia. moscow said this is nothing new but in recent days marines and air traffic has arrived.

senior security director michael morrell joins us live from washington. good morning. >> good morning, gail. >> what's behind the russian involvement in syria and what does it mean? >> here's what's happening. u.s. intelligence is monitoring russian activity in northwest syria. and what they're seeing is the arrival of prefabricated housing units for about 1,000 people, a portable air traffic control system, a tank landing ship. the -- not a lot of clarity on exactly what's happening here. but the leading theory is that the russians are building an air base and the concern is that they might conduct combat air operations out of that air base on behalf of president assad and his fight against isis. that's the concern. >> how does the u.s. potentially respond to that? >> there's only one thing we can really do, which is try to stop

the flow of these arms. and there's three ways for the russian to get this stuff to syria. one is to overfly turkey. the turks have said no. there's been a long history to that. the other way, that's what's been happening, over bulgaria and greece. but now the united states has reached out and the bulgarians have agreed no more flights. . iranians yesterday said to the russians, you can overfly iran but that still means they need to overfly i rack. i think the diplomatic focus is going on on iraq and the u.s. is going to push tremendous pressure on iraq to stop the flights. >> i want to get your thoughts this morning about a story in the "daily beast" about 50 intelligence officials who have said in some cases their reports have been altered by senior officials in some case to make it look like the fight against isis and al qaeda is going better than it might be. what's your reaction to that? >> these are analysts at the

u.s. central command centcom, which is conducting the operations in iraq and syria. one of the key aspects of the policy making process in the united states is that analysts get to say what they think without any interference or anybody changing it. this is a very, very serious charge. i think it needs to be fully investigated. and if there is truth that somebody has been meddling with their analysis, i think somebody needs to lose their job over it and there needs to be full transparency into this. this is so important that analysts actually get to say what they really think. >> mike, quickly, is the fight against isis going worse than the public thinks it is? >> i think there's three battlefields. one is the battlefield in iraq and syria. and i say we're at stalemate there. the second battlefield is the militant groups around the world who are knew claiming they're

part of isis. we're losing that battle. and then the third battle is the i'd logical battle for the hearts and minds of young people in the yates, in western europe, australia and canada, i think we're losing that fight too. three different fights. >> thank you. michael morrell in washington this morning. this morning, members of congress are considering a plan to grant more u.s. visas in an effort to help the refugee crisis in europe. secretary of state john kerry tried to sell the idea yesterday in washington. the united states current limit on refugee visas is 70,000. that could rise to as many as 100,000. if approved, the increase could go into effect next month. this morning, the greek coast guard is investigating an apparent sabotage against migrants. it stems from the video yesterday. five armed men in uniforms intercepted the rubber dinghy and cut off their fuel supply.

the turkish coast guard towed them to safety. a wide spread salmonella outbreak in cucumbers is blamed for two deaths. cases in 30 states. the two deaths were reported in california and texas. the imported cucumbered were branded limited edition from andrew and williamson produce. they're splicer or american style dark cucumber s. the kentucky county clerk jailed for defying the supreme court same-sex marriage ruling will return to work next week. lawyers for kim davis say she's taking time off with her family. there are questions about what will happen when she returns to work. we spoke to a deputy clerk who has issued marriage license to gay couples. >> when kim davis returns back to work and she says you're not

good morning. i'm frank mallicoat. seven people are injured in an early-morning fire in the bay point. the flames spread through four homes. it happened around 1 a.m. four people had to be taken to the hospital. it started because of a car fire that jumped on a home. fire burned power lines too causing power outages in the neighborhood. another day of dangerous heat across the bay area for a second day, the campbell union high school district allowing students to leave early because of the heat at noontime. many classrooms in the district have no air-conditioning. they have high schools in

shaker symbol for food that goes over the recommended daily limit of 2300 milligrams of sodium. that's about one teaspoon. our dr. holly phillips is with us. good morning. >> good morning. >> why did they do this? >> this is a really bold move for new york city, completely in line with what we see as public health trends nationwide, all about transparency. giving consumers more information about the food they're buying. this is not about policing the food or limiting access to the food. you can have as much as you want. it's about showing you how much sodium is in it. with salt this is particularly important because 75% of the salt we take in in our diet as americans is essentially hidden. it's in restaurant food, processed food that may not even taste salty. only 10% of the salt we get comes from our salt shaker. >> do you think most people think, if i don't use a salt shaker, then i'm not really using salt.

i do that all the time. >> very, very much so. when i have patients trying to lower their blood pressure, and i'll ask them how much salt do you take it, some say zero because they don't use their salt shaker. >> how much is too much? >> right now guidelines show 2,300 milligrams is what adults should limit themselves to. others should have less. if you already have high blood pressure or kidney disease, over the age of 51, or african-american, particularly sensitive to salt, try to limit yourslf to 1,500 a day. here is one thing. i have to acknowledge it's been a long-standing debate and controversy over whether those numbers in the guidelines are perfect. some people say -- some research has shown some people can have more than the recommended daily amount and extreme, extreme low salt diets can be damaging to the elderly. >> we should mention the salt institute to that point say this is another example of the government creating policy based on outdated, incorrect sodium
