hosting a big party to celebrate the countdown to super bowl 50. hi, frank mallicoat. michelle griego michelle griego is off today. thousands of fans have already kicked off the nfl season. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: the gates open at justin herman plaza at 2:30 this and for a free concert on the stage behind me featuring train and ellie goulding. parts of that concert will be broadcast during tonight's big game. from always hype in san francisco today, you wouldn't know that the actual nfl season opener is being played across the country because a lot of the action is right here. >> this year, we decided we got to go bigger. everything is bigger for super bowl 50. so really making it national. >> reporter: on our coast, all eyes on the end game, super bowl 50, at the foot of market street an exhibit displaying all eight super bowl trophies, the raiders and the 49ers have

won. >> we took the ferry over from petaluma, beautiful day in san francisco, can't beat it. >> i want to enjoy the nfl experience. i have been a fan ever since i was five years old. >> reporter: at pier 35, a fan festival including an obstacle course where you can try to catch a pass and the chance to try on a uniform of your favorite team. it's all leading up to the bay area hosting of super bowl 50. >> it's about the next 50 super bowls, more better and innote have aive market in the bay area. >> reporter: this is the same area that will be transformed on january 30th for super bowl 50 in february. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> the 49ers open their season on monday night and you can watch that game right here on kpix 5. new at noon, former oakland raider quarterback and the two- time super bowl champ jim plunkett paid a special visit to a san jose school. he graduated from james lick high school and went back to

present a commemorative wilson golden football. he says he attributes much of his success to the support he got from his high school. >> it's a place i hold dearly in my heart. some of the best times in my life, between high school and college, probably the best eight years of my life. >> that golden football presentation is part of the nfl's new super bowl high school honor roll initiative. high schools are cross the nation will receive a special football for every player or coach who graduated from their school and was on an active super bowl roster. a firefighter's helmet cam captured flames from a fire that broke out in bay point today. it destroyed two homes and damaged two others. 7 people were hospitalized, one with burn and six with smoke inhalation. kpix 5 reporter kiet do reports from the scene, where investigators believe they know what triggered that fire. >> reporter: it must make you shake your head.

>> when you do this long enough, things don't surprise you. >> reporter: investigators say somebody got high with a drug pipe, lighters they found inside this minivan and started a fire that nearly burned down the whole neighborhood. >> sometimes people who are high will do stupid stuff. >> reporter: the fire in the minivan spread quickly and jumped to the house and raged or for some time before anyone called nine one. it jumped to three more houses. it was a frantic evacuation as people ran through the heat and smoke and tried to fight the flames with garden hoses. this person watched in horror as her own house burned. she and her three children escaped okay but says her life and dreams are gone. >> all my pictures, all my memories, are gone. >> reporter: her sister says she saw people doing drugs in the van at all hours of the day and called police multiple times. she says all this pain and suffering could have been prevented. >> everybody was -- saw it coming, you know, something's

going to happen. it was just a bomb waiting to explode. >> reporter: a total of 7 people were injured mostly with smoke inhalation and one man had burns on his back. all injuries described as minor. total cost of the damage, $850,000. kiet do, kpix 5. >> investigators are now trying to find out whoever it was inside that van when the fire started. a big rig carrying a load of paint overturned in marin county this morning prompting a full hazmat response. the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. on lucas valley road leaving the trailer hanging over the embankment there. the container held 14,000 gallons of paint and fell into a crevasse with 1500 gallons flowing out. >> the truck had tried to take a very tight turn, took it too tight. the rear of the trailer slid down the hill and pulled the whole trailer down. so the truck stayed on the roadway, the trailer went down and released paint. >> chp is not sure how much

paint went into the creek, which is owned by property owner filmmaker george lucas. the state epa has been called in to investigate. a wildfire in the sierra foothills tripled in size forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. the butte fire has scorched 4,000 acres since it started yesterday afternoon. cal fire has ordered evacuations in parts of calaveras and amador counties. six homes have been destroyed. thousands are without power. that blaze only 20% contained. the fbi is asking the public to take a second look at an unsolved oakland murder case. today the fbi and oakland police announced they are looking for clues in the murder of 22-year-old aya nakano. in 2013 someone hit the car from behind. when he went to check, he was shot to death. his mother says it would mean a lot to his family to catch the killer. >> it would mean justice. it will never be -- there will

never be closure because it won't bring aya back to us. but we certainly owe it to him, you know, to give him -- to catch the people who did this. >> fbi also announced it's adding to the reward fund now making it a total of $125,000. ellen pao who sued a law firm for gender discrimination is dropping her appeal. the case brought attention to gender bias in the silicon valley. her announcement today ends a three-year legal battle. she says seeking justice has been painful and she has decided to pay the legal costs and move on with her life. a big announcement in the freddie gray case. a judge decided to keep the trial of the six officers in involving gray's murder in baltimore. gray died from injuries he sustained in police custody which caused an uprising this summer. defense attorneys argued that media coverage and riots would prevent a fire trial in the

city. citizens want justice. >> the killers of freddie gray must go to jail and be prosecuted. >> according to court documents, the charges against the officers range from assault to murder. new at noon, president obama says his administration is preparing to accept at least 10,000 refugees in the next fiscal year. that's about 6 times the number of refugees taken in this year. state department says it can take up to two years for the refugee screening process to be completed. a bill to restrict drones over private property has been vetoed by governor brown today. the bill makes it a trespassing crime to operate drones within 350 feet of the property without owner permission. brown said it could create excessive litigation if the devices are in restricted areas. police in california may not be able to look at your cell phone or computer without a warrant soon. a bill sent to the governor

the west nile virus was found in the area off highway 680 and mckee road in san jose, where officials will start fogging treatment again tonight. it will be fogged for several hours starting at 11 p.m. authorities are also warning people to avoid being outside during dawn and dusk, when mosquitos are most active. and for the third day in a row blistering heat in the bay area like a furnace. a live look outside the city as temperatures will hit over 100 degrees in a number of cities today. because of that heat, south bay students will be released early from school today. the campbell union high school district says many of its classrooms are not air- conditioned. district has schools in san jose, campbell and saratoga. alum rock park in san jose will be closed for the third

we should be 69. 88 in san jose. livermore at 97 degrees going up to a forecast high there today of 107. that's what we experienced yesterday, as well. it's another "spare the air" day the third consecutive day in a row. it's the third consecutive day with a heat advisory in place with our temperatures going up into the triple digits away from the bay. this is what we all need to know. we do have a light seabreeze. otherwise, it is definitely hot in our inland areas. we do have some relief in sighted for the weekend, but it's going to turn muggy. this right here, remnants of hurricane linda, a very powerful hurricane at one time, caused some rain across the southern california area yesterday. some of those clouds making their way into our forecast over the weekend maybe a sprinkle on sunday turning very muggy this weekend, as well. but meanwhile, the bubble of high pressure continues to be in full command of our bay area forecast. we do have that seabreeze, however, along the coast. okay, sundown at 7:29 -- or 7:25, rather. and by then, we'll have realized 60s in half moon bay

to the 80s in pacifica, 80s, 90s across the rim of the bay, up to 102 around the peninsula, 99 san jose, 90s and triple digits inland. the same friday. then the weekend gradual cooling but turning muggy and boy, we'll see some seasonal weather return by tuesday and wednesday. it's going to be interesting this weekend, though. i wish we had the rain from southern california up here. >> three days of 90s is a heat wave? >> we had four days because monday was hot on labor day. nobody realized it because they were all playing on labor day. so three each advisory days but four days that we have had prolonged heat. >> more to come. all right, thank you. international props for some young jefferson award winners from the peninsula. 16-year-old ryan traynor has been named to the first 30 under 30 list by the international literacy association. he started a book drive that collected more than 25,000 books and he started a youth literacy council to support

educational programs for children. meantime, this week's jefferson award winner is inspiring teenagers like ryan to become leaders. sharon chin shows us how she is taking them abroad to do it. ♪[ music ] reporter: brian lax says eliza pesuit helped transform his life. >> you can't put into words the things i have seen and the emotions i felt. >> reporter: the 17-year-old student from impact academy in hayward recently spent three weeks in nicaragua through eliza's nonprofit glimpse -- "global glimpse." meeting families living in a garbage dump broke his heart. >> my story is crazy. i have been through it all. and then i go there and see people living in extreme poverty. >> reporter: as executive director of "global glimpse" in oakland eliza sends a diverse group of high school juniors from the bay area and new york to developing countries. >> the joy of seeing their eyes open, i remember that moment in my own life. >> reporter: so far, 2700 high school students and 270 teach

-- 270 teachers have traveled overseas with "global glimpse." teens like brian receive training in leadership, culture and history before traveling to the dominican republic, ecuador or nicaragua for three weeks. they live like the locals and serve the community. travel costs $3,500 per student. but teens pay on a sliding scale and raise a minimum of $500 each. funding from foundations and individuals pays the rest. volunteer teachers like impact academy's erin brandvold traveled with the students. >> i get so excited when they talk about oh, now i want to go and major in political science so i can do this or for a lot of them it changes where they see themselves going. >> reporter: eliza understands. and that's why she responded to a job posting and took the executive director's job at "global glimpse" 7 years ago to give students the experience she had had as an international volunteer. >> they come back with a sense of purpose. they believe in themselves . >> reporter: marcela berrios says it thrives because eliza ignites a passion for people. >> she is kind of like the cayenne pepper of our office.

well, today's tip of the day is going to be is going to be with grape tomatoes. this time of year, grape tomatoes are going like crazy in the market. locally grown and delicious. they are going to be around for a little while longer and then they will go away mostly imported. but right now, you can't beat them. when you buy them the redder the better all the way around. they are shaped like games.
