a wild chase tgh a wild chase through the crowded streets of los angeles thursday. a carjacking suspect led police on a pursuit through side streets and highways, the suspect hitting at least one other car. the chase ended when cops ran the suspect's car, but that's when the situation became even more dangerous. the armed man ran into a packed restaurant where the ordeal came to a deadly conclusion. erica nochlin of our los angeles station kcbs reports. >> reporter: as customers and employees of chris' & pitt's barbecue ran out of the restaurant with their hands on their heads, their terror was apparent. this woman searched for her family and described a scene inside the restaurant she'll never forget. >> we were eating dinner and i

just hear a man screaming get down, get down. and then he yelled out all women and babies get out, and i ran out with my grandchildren. >> reporter: she said the man asked for medicine. >> he pointed a gun right at me. he said, where's the water, where's the water. >> reporter: other employees and customers described their fear. >> they told their wives to get down. pretty much i ran out the back door. i was worried my mom was still in there. >> i saw the gun and said, oh, no, don't shoot me, please. >> i walked out of the bathroom with my hands up and he yelled get out. >> reporter: eventually the deputies shot the gunman. an update from investigators that at least four hostages were held against their will before the deputies moved in. no one else was hit by gunfire. for cbs news, erica nochlin, downie, california.

police are investigating the deaths of five family members in minnesota in an parent murder/suicide. officers went to the lakeside home in minnie tonka west of minneapolis after no one was seen or heard from in days. three of the dead are children. police did not release details on how the family members died. >> there's no words to describe it. i've been a cop for 32 years, and they say an event like this, an entire family, as they say, a tragedy. >> police said the request to check on the family came from a co-worker of the father. a former police officer michael slager remains behind bars today. a judge reached no decision at a bond hearing thursday for the ex-officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man at a traffic stop. the judge wants the to review information presented during the hearing. he did not say when he would rule on bail for slager, who is charged with murder in the april 4th shooting death of walter scott.

new york city's police commissioner apologizes to former tennis player james blake. a police officer is on modified duty and is being investigated for throwing blake to the ground wednesday in a case of mistaken identity. the officer thought blake was a suspect in a credit card investigation. the commissioner said thursday he was sorry for what happened. >> i'd be very interested to talk with him, to extend my apologies for the incident which he found himself involved in yesterday around noontime. >> both blake and bratton say they don't believe -- they believe race was not a factor in the incident. straight ahead, football fury. we'll tell you why steelers' coaches are not too happy following last night's opener against the patriots. and in "moneywatch," k-cup coffee machines brew up a savory snack. details ahead.

representative cindy gamrat was expelled this morning. they were accused of using taxpayer money to cover up their affair. a vote to remove courser fell short. he admitted to sending a fake e-mail accusing himself of paying for gay sex to downplay the affair. on the "cbs moneywatch," a fiat chrysler recall grows, and your k-cup coffee maker is cooking up something new. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. stockmarkets in asia were mixed ahead of key economic data from china. here on wall street investors are waiting for next week's critical federal reserve meeting and a possible decision on interest rates. yesterday stocks finished higher. the dow gained 76 points. the s&p finished 10 points higher. the nasdaq climbed 39 points. fiat chrysler is recalling 3.7 million of its chrysler ram

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. this year on cbs we've got super bowl 50. that's right. roman numeral "l." super bowl l. for some reason they're not going with the roman numeral this year, which i believe is a mistake. i think two things in life are important enough to deserve roman numerals, super bowls and popes. >> but before we get to the super bowl, there's a whole regular season of nfl to get to and it kicks off with the defending champs in new england. the patriots celebrating their victory in super bowl xlix

before taking on the steelers, and after a tumultuous off-season brady was under center for new england. brady doesn't seem affected by the deflategate controversy at all. they win the season opener, 28-21. >> you seemed to be pretty jacked up. >> yeah, i was pretty excited. i think the regulars around here always see me pretty excited, you know, especially running in pregame. the coach says you put everything -- you have one week and you put everything you can into that one three-hour performance. >> it was brady's 161st win as a starting quarterback, and that is the most for any quarterback with one nfl team. well, a new season and a new controversy for the patriots though. just call it, what else, head t headsetgate? the steelers' coaching staff
