state of emergency. tonight- hundreds of homes are gone.. as an it is something like -- that you see in the movies. horrifying. >> state of emergency.

hundreds of homes are gone as an unstoppable wildfire rips across parts of lake, napa and sonoma county. >> the valley fire exploded over 50,000 acres in 24 hours. tonight it is still completely out of control. the damage it is catastrophe. hundreds of homes have been lost, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated the national guard has been mobilized and the governor declared a disaster. fire wiped out entire neighborhoods including parts of cobb mountain, middletown and hidden valley lake. this is all 90 miles north of san francisco. there has been damage at the thermal plant. >> here is a map of the current burn area. right now the fire is running to the southeast and northeast. evacuation orders have been extended to the clear lake riviera area to midel town.

we have team coverage tonight, mark kel seat -- middletown. we have team coverage tonight, mark kelly has more. >> reporter: not much is recognizable. take a look at this. hard to under stand by looking at it. this is the door. it is a metal door, completely twisted up and melted from the flames. this is the sight we have seen over and over as we run through the area. >> reporter: in middletown, entire neighborhoods are turned to ash. many homes burned down to the foundation. >> dozens and dozens of homes destroyed. we are looking at even possibly in this area over 100 homes of homes, maybe thousands of homes. >> reporter: the heat was so hot it melted the car. >> it took out vehicles parked in their driveways. >> reporter: the valley fire

is the 5th major fire this summer and by the far worst. most effected rural areas but this one is taking big chunks of towns, first cobb and now middletown. the fire started yesterday. with the help of swift winds quickly began spreading in several directions. >> within 12 hours we had over 40,000 acres and that is unheard of. >> that is really fast. >> correct. this fire was moving from the get go. >> the witnesses describe 50 foot walls of flames charging towards their homes. >> vehicles pulled off to the side on fire. and the structures were on fire. apartment structures were on fire. looks like something is out of there. >> now, many other homes.

firefighters spending the last 24 hours dealing with evacuations now they are turning their attention to fighting flames as well as going door to door and making sure that nobody got hurt. now, so far we have not heard of fatalities or injuries be sides firefighters. well, they want to go door to door and not -- now they are in cobb. the first town hit by the fire. they are going over with dogs just to make sure everyone is safe. >> now, i heard things about this. i think the only way out of town was highway 29, right? for cobb and middletown and all of those places. >> that is the main area. and people had to abandon their cars on the highway. those cars burned up. there are other ways out and yet some people stayed and like i said not the entire town is burned up. with the officials they want to take care of people first and then property. at this point they are trying to make sure everybody is okay. >> of course part of this, the

fire moved so fast, experts said they never seen a fire burn so quickly. i know the drought -- the drought is part of it but what is the other part of it? >> yes. the other part is the wind. one fire official said 50 to 60 mile-an-hour gusts. there is an expression, moves like a wildfire. this one moves faster than most wildfires. they said that the fire is making its own weather. there are 1,000 firefighters on the scene and they are battling flames and weather. the winds gusting as high as 36 miles an hour. the winds settled down but it is dry. humidity, 15% in one of the reasons it burned so rapidly,

the driveway fuel after four years of drought -- dry fuel after four years of drought the winds will push the fire to the north and the east. those winds will gust to 20 miles an hour. there is good news, high pressure gives way to colder air coming in from oregon. so, the temperatures will cool at least 10 degrees in lake county tomorrow. the winds will ease up, humidity rises. there is even a chance of showers in the area bid with morning. in the meantime, firefighters have their hands full both with this and other fires throughout the state. we want to show you new video of a daring escape from the valley fire. the person who posted this on youtube said he was driving out of anderson springs at 8:30 last night. you can see the flames raging alongside both sides of the home. he sees the home he swears and punches out the gas. he made it out safely with no time to spare. >> reporter: evacuation

centers are set up at kelseyville high school and clearlake senior center and napa county fairgrounds. >> reporter: we got unupdate -- an update from cal fire. they talk about how unique and fast-moving the wildfire has been. some had minutes to get out of their home, get to this evacuation center where they are now starting to settle in for the night. for this family this wood frame and mesh roof will be their home tonight. since the valley fire likely took their real home away. >> like a match book. just boom! black smoke covering up behind me. >> it is like something you see in the movies. it is terrifying. >> fortunately this family has their important paperwork and each other. but at this evacuation center there is still a great deal they are missing. >> my medicine, my truck, my boat. my clothes. >> if it is any consolation

they are not -- if there is any consolation there are no deaths. >> there have been tears shed. >> does it warm your heart to see this? >> yes. this is -- this is what it is about right here. >> reporter: at this shelter pets are welcome, too. under a few conditions. >> we have supplies and animals are welcome here just not invited indoors. >> next. >> reporter: most of the day a stream of vehicles dropping off everything from pet food to clothes and dishes. anything to preponder the fire victims rebuild their lives. now -- anything to help the fire victims we build their lives. >> like many here she say fire victim but also a trauma therapist. >> look for the things in your life that are still there,

still working and focus on taking care of those. >> now you continue to hear the heartwarming stories here. >> reporter: we just heard one in the past hour of some people with their homes still together welcome something of the evacuees to stay with them for the next few days as they get back on their feet. even the mayor saying don't worry our officials are here to take care of you. mark kelly, kpix5. >> mark, thank you. if you are having trouble reaching friends and family in the areaer you want people to know you are okay you can go to the red cross safe and well web site. search for them by name or register yourself safe. we posted a link to the site on our web site. >> you imagine the scramble to get out a lot of people had to leave their livestock behind. some of the animals are okay. twitter user stringer found these chickens safe in their coop. there was this pair of baby goats. you can see the earth is

the valley fire grown to 50,000 acres in just 24 hours since 1:24 p.m. when it started. we have seen several pictures of homes going up in flames and burning to the ground. cal fire is going in to get a closer look at the damage and get a number of how many buildings destroyed. all we know is it in is the hundreds. firefighters have their handing full. this is out of control. no containment at all.

harbin hot springs is destroyed. >> in the middle of all of this devastation, good news. this is cal firefighter giving the thumb's up from his hospital bed. one of the four firefighters injured fighting the valley fire yesterday. all four were airlifted to the medical center with second- degree burns and are all expected to be okay. schools closed all lake county school and yuba college, pope valley elementary and the howell mountain elementary school district. >> now, firefighters are making progress on the massive youth fire. it burned 64 acres since wednesday. the fire is now 25% contained. at least 81 homes and 51 out

the smoke was so thick planes are turning around. it could not fly. now, this photo of ash collecting on a car windshield in walnut creek. well, we are getting haze in one source or the other. smoke or marine layer is coming into the bay bridge. that is what we are seeing. visibility is getting less. temperatures are coming down. inland, low 90s, concord, 89. still plenty warm at livermore. 5 degrees. san francisco, 77 degrees. low pressure off of the pacific northwest finally. sending a trough through. cooler weekend. more low clouds. temperatures going down 15 degrees from the highs today. it will warm up for thursday, friday, saturday, between now and then there is a chance for a shower or two working its way in the north bay.

that is wednesday. meantime, here is a look at what is happening tomorrow. high and low clouds coming in. 8:00 tomorrow morning, fairly overcast for monday. the time lapse rolls on you can see a day finally giving way to sunshine in the east bay by the afternoon. more clouds. cooler week ahead. as we look towards mount diablo you can not see it. now warming up towards the weekend. travel forecast a lot of haze in the central valley where they have bad air quality alerts down to 99 and fresno. they have all of the smoke from the huge fire out there. all of the overnight lows, bay area tonight, tomorrow, falling below average readings for highs. 69 in san francisco, concord, 77, san jose, 78 and oakland,

69 degrees. down on the south bay tomorrow, mostly cloudy and mostly cloudy conditions through much of the day. 75 degrees for santa clara tomorrow. mostly in the middle to low 80s for the south bay tomorrow. over skyline, the coastline, it will be freezing. 64 at half-moon bay. over in the east bay tomorrow, plenty of haze and smoke. the temperatures in the middle 70s for the most part way back to where we were today in the low 90s. livermore tomorrow, 83 degrees or 79 degrees. over at the shoreline, north bay. plenty of temperatures but not a lot of sun. temperatures, oakland, 69 degrees. 69, in the direction of the fire, lakeport at 79. near 80 degrees. now, in the extended forecast, time for a cool change in the bay area. the numbers will be in the low

many experts had the raiders priming for big opening day wind. smith signed on friday, did play a lot today. did not have a sack. the first quarter, hill, bouncing to the outside on 4th down. breaks a couple tackless and scores the first of 2 touchdowns on the afternoon 10- 0, 2nd quarter, can not find the open receiver, ties the tuck and run. i am hearing 2-4 weeks the raider quarterback could be out. the injuries and the raiders struggles on defense making for a long day. now, scoring. the first of his 2 touchdowns
