acres and just 5% contained. 13,000 people are displaced, and hundreds of homes are reduced to ruins. just minutes ago, state officials confirmed one dead and several more unaccounted for. good afternoon, everyone. i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. the destruction from the fire is immense. flames are spreading at a rate they haven't seen in decades. anne makovec is in calistoga. >> reporter: this is the largest evacuation i have seen. i want to give you a 180-degree look at what this is right now. hundreds of people came here to escape the flames. they have set up tents. they have their vehicles here. their vehicles basically containing everything they own at this point. these people don't know how long they'll be here or where they will go next. >> our houses are gone. >> lily brown is one of hundreds of people who used to

live in middletown, and now temporarily live at the napa county fairgrounds in calistoga. it's a mini city that literally popped up overnight. >> i'm really grateful for everything that everyone's donating. >> reporter: and everyone here has a tale to tell of frantically leaving their homes behind. 13,000 people have been evacuated. >> you couldn't even see through the smoke. i mean, you could hardly see your neighbor's house. >> reporter: the valley fire blew up overnight saturday. it's burned 61,000 acres and at least 400 homes, as well as hundreds of other buildings and businesses. one person has been killed. four firefighters injured. it moved erratically in all directions and it moved fast. people had just minutes to try to pack up everything they wanted to save and set up camp here. >> you start seeing people, and you're like, thank god it's so good to see you. we didn't know if you were going to get out of there. >> reporter: mandatory

evacuations remain in effect. donations at the red cross shelters have been pouring in, from dog food to clothing and there's a kitchen where volunteers are cooking hot meals. and there are 1500 firefighters working on this fire. today i spoke with the captain a few minutes ago. he said that they are out there trying to assess the damage at this point in addition to fighting the fire, so they're hopefully soon going to have a better number on the number of houses that have been burned. in the meantime, ten helicopters helping fight this fire from above. live in calistoga. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> and thanks for that live report in calistoga. in middletown, nearly half the homes in one neighborhood are gone. kpix 5 reporter, cate cauguiran found one home that escaped the flames unscathed. ironically, the owner was away helping others. >> reporter: it took minutes for the valley fire to wipe away a lifetime of memories for hundreds of families and here

in middletown, nearly half the homes in the community are gone. some got lucky. >> i'm hearing over the raid you, headed -- over the radio, headed to middletown in the next hour. he was in cob where the flames broke out when he heard the flames were headed to his home. >> reporter: it would be two days before he got back home to see for himself. >> i drove down the street, and i was looking around and all my neighbors are gone, i'm just devastated. i thought my house is going to be gone. >> reporter: homes reduced to ash and rubble. his street looked like a bomb had exploded. >> as i came around the corner, i saw it. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: his home one of the few still standing. >> i was frozen probably for about an hour, staring at my house and glad it's still here. >> reporter: this seasoned firefighter knows this is as close to a miracle as it gets. for the rest of his neighbors. >> there's no house for people to rent. it's all gone. there's nothing here. >> reporter: don says he believes close to half of the

homes in his neighborhood are gone. but he will stay, and today he'll be back on the fire lines to continue fight. >> this is where i am. this is what i do. this is what i love. this is my community and you just have to. there's no other word for it. you have to keep going. >> reporter: don says unfortunately his daughter's family lost everything so he and his wife consider themselves lucky. when you look around here, there's no other word to describe it. in middletown, cate cauguiran kpix 5. new at noon, evacuation orders have been extended north to the clear lake riff area a, and highway -- riveria, and highway 53 to lake county. middletown, cob and hidden valley remain evacuationed. governor terry brown, an update on the wildfire. the governor has declared a state of emergency for lake and napa counties. it says the immediate concern is public safety but the long- term problem is climate change.

>> we need our short-term, which is to deal with the forests with preventative fires. it's to build up our fire personnel, and the equipment that is needed. and be ready to pull in resources from all over. and of course we need the longer term goals to try to minimize the build up of drought, and global warming. >> more than 11,000 firefighters are battology bat -- battling a dozen major fires. the man who posted the video on you tube says he was driving out of anderson springs at about 8:30 saturday night. that's to the west of middletown, and you can see the flames just raging along both sides of the road, and what looks like at least one house burning. when the driver sees the home in the flames, he swears and punches the gas. he was able to make it out safely. other drivers had to just simply give and leave their

cars behind. the heat from the fire was so intense, the cars melted away on the side of highway 29. the burn area more than twice the size of san francisco. 95 square miles have been scorched in less nan 48 hours. it's reached the edge of sonoma county. roberta gonzales has been monitoring the weather conditions for the firefighters firefighters and are they going to get a break today? >> we're certainly getting a little bit of a break today. good afternoon, everybody. as far as a valley fire is concerned. we have cloud cover. it's cooler, currently 64 degrees. southwest winds 10 to 15, and we have had mist this morning with light rain expected. wind right now have been increasing in the san ramon area, and we head to the knot bay, winds out of the south, southwest, and napa 16 miles per hour. at the liest elevations -- highest elevations that's where we have been seeing it.

primarily to the south we could see wetness across the entire bay area. we'll tell you how much rain to expect, and when the next shot of rain is coming. that's later in the broadcast. >> people in lake county are lending a hand to help those who lost their homes and also save their pets. local vets have been treating animals for free at an evacuation center. everything from cats and dogs, as you can see calves right there inside a car, and horses. one evacuated horse owners appreciates the donations just for the animals. >> i mean, there is everything from water to rakes, to horse treats, dog treats, dog food. >> volunteers saved a litter of puppies and brought them to the calistoga fire grounds where many evacuees are treating them. they would have been euthanized if volunteers didn't get them and help them out. a lot of evacwees are worried

surprise and secret for the fans. the first thing fans will notice are a pair of brand new screens, one at the entrance. 1400 seats have been added in what used to be the standing room only. given complaints about heat, beer and water are cheaper. as for internet access, there are 100 new wi-fi access points and 60 distributed antennas. chris says he can instagram that much faster. >> shouldn't you pay attention to the game. >> most of the people don't really pay attention but normally, the people paying attention in the 4th quarter because it gets interesting. >> reporter: on any given night, vta has 28 trains running. for monday night football, they are adding 10 additional trains. they will be direct route trains so passengers get to the game kicker. the agency says they learned a

lot in the preseason game against the san diego chargers. they estimate an extra 10,000 riders will join the regular commuters. on monday night, vta will have a command post set up to monitor the inflow of riders and reposition the trains for the rush home. >> we feel in this case that we know more about the habits of our riders, more about where they're coming from. so that we're able to make the appropriate plans. >> getting out of the parking lot should also be quicker. red lot one and green lot one will have extra exit lanes onto great american parkway. blue lot one will have one more exit onto patch work henry drive, and onto great america parkway. from red lot 8, you'll be able to go south on lafayette street and finally, red lot 6, the biggest lot will have double the exit capacity of what it had before. the stadium folks say they will have extra staff to improve traffic flow through the intersections after the game.

developing news out of mississippi, a campus is on lock down after a professor is shot to death inside an office. delta state university in jackson is tweeting the active shooter is still on campus. students and staff are told to shelter in place and avoid windows. the professor is identified as ethan schmitt, an assistant professor of history who just published his second book. a huge convention kicking off this week in san francisco. a cruise ship being used to house some of the hundred thousand people in town for dream force. host sales force, partnering with celebrity cruises to charter this colossal ship at pier 47, the so called dream boat will act as a floating hotel for hundreds of dream force attendees, the convention runs through friday. today is the deadline for submitting proposals to build

affordable housing on a controversy lot in oakland. a community group is expected to unveil their plan near lake merritt at 5:30. this is the same site of a high- rise battle earlier in year between a private developer and affordable housing activists. that kentucky clerk who went to jail rather than sign gay marriage certificates is back at work today. cbs report e jericka duncan says the woman isn't budging on her position. >> an emotional kim davis began her first day back at work with a statement to the media. >> i don't want to have this conflict. i don't want to be in the spotlight, and i certainly don't want to be a whipping post. >> reporter: the rowen county clerk spent five days in jail for refusing to issue any marriage licenses, citing her religious beliefs against same- sex marriage. >> for me, this would be an act of disobedience to my god. >> reporter: davis an elected official was jailed for contempt. in her absence, deputy clerks

issued licenses, something davis says can continue, but added. >> any unauthorized license that they issue will not have my name, my title or my authority on it. instead, the license will state that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order. >> reporter: davis continues to draw supporters and protesters in front of her office. she's now asking the state legislature to make an accommodation for her religious beliefs. she says she won't issue any marriage licenses but she will not interfere with the deputies who continue to do so. jericka duncan, cbs news, moorhead kentucky. time for a look at your weather. let's check in with roberta and see how the bay area is fare. >> and this is why i want to call in the weather watchers. they can see things around the bay area that i can not. let's look at who's report at this hour. jim's report 69 degrees and mostly cloudy skies. and wily in sonoma says

overcast, breezy, and 67 degrees. we do not have anybody report any rain as of yet. our live high def doppler radar picking up spotty light rain showers. you can see it banking up against the santa cruz mountains there, and looks like this is very light, and the first disturbance rolling through the bay area today will be focusing mainly on the southern portion of our bay area. we're only going up with 3/100 of an inch of rain, just enough to wet the sidewalks in most areas. >> looking out toward the golden gate bridge, you can see a little bit of condensation on the camera lens here. this is all associated with a deep marine layer that has push back on shore, in addition to the mid and high level cloudiness associated with that upper level disturbance. our temperatures in the 60s. it is 77 degrees in livermother. this is what we can expect today. partly to mostly cloudy skies. our temperatures will be cooler than they were all weekend, and then we do have the chance of rain across the bay area today.

a better chance come wednesday. and then that disturbance is going to focus primarily on the northern portion of our bay area. here's the upper level disturbance right there. it's tapping into that sub tropical moisture. that's all that remnants from what was once a hurricane. yeah, linda. so that low is coming in towards this upper level low and that's why we have that light moisture expected across the bay area. here's future cast. you can see we're spot on with the light rain across the santa cruz mountains. we will be partly cloudy for attitude. then here comes the -- tuesday. then here comes the next disturbance for wednesday. which promises a little more like rain showers across the northern half of the bay area. 74 degrees in sacramento. a watchful eye on the forecast, and because of the potential of thunderstorm activity. sunset, 7:19. and by the time it comes back up tomorrow morning, we will have highs 50s for lows. outside numbers, 79. cooling off for tuesday. there's this shot of rain on

anchovies and i multiply them in oil. get a nice flavor going on before i put the blanched dandelion greens with oil and garlic. before we serve it, i'm going to remove the garlic, and as i'm doing this, can you squeeze a lemon in here. it's going to brighten this up and add acidity. a good thing to remember is you want to make sure you don't just taste bitter, we're going for the full flavor! let me go ahead and plate this. >> it's such an overlooked green, but so good. >> so simple to make, delicious, and great for you. >> yeah. >> thank you. >> ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
