evacuees are heading home. good afternoon everyone, i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. some dramatic new video just into our newsroom sacramento firefighters saved this home from the valley fire middletown. the crew was able to breakthrough a fence dragging hoses right up next to the home and knocked down flames burning roof before the fire completely destroyed it and take a look at the aftermath now. the home still standing thanks so some hard work by the crews there. everything surrounding the house completely burned. >> and let's take a look at the numbers of just how big this valley fire is. so far, it's burned 67,000 acres. firefighters have it about 15% contained. right now. that's an improvement from yesterday when the fire was only at 10% containment. nearly 600 homes have burned to the ground. a majority of the devastated area is located between highway 29 and highway 175 in lake and napa counties. let's get right out to kpix 5's

cate cauguiran. she's live in calistoga and tells us some people are being allowed to return home to get their beloved pets. >> reporter: yes, michelle and frank. it will be a bittersweet moment for a lot of these families because it will be the first time they'll be allowed to return home or what's left of it since they were evacuated. keith took his little pup for the early morning walk around the fairgrounds. >> he's part of the family. the same as one of our sons. >> reporter: even with minutes to evacuate. keith made sure mr. wrinkles came along. >> he's with us all the time. he goes to work with us every day. and he's -- no way he was going to stay behind. >> reporter: but keith knows he's one of the lucky ones. >> a lot of people that have nothing now. unfortunately, we got -- lots of neighbors lost pets. >> reporter: some had no choice but to leaf pets behind -- leave pets behind in the chaos of trying the race the flames to safety. >> i any one woman -- know one woman came in with a three horse trailer and picked which three horses out of the six horses to bring down. >> reporter: pam says some

families set their horses free marking them with paint or phone numbers hoping to find them later. >> they had to open up gates to let them run and hope they could survive the fire. >> reporter: since the evacuation, people here have been waiting anxiously. >> people are just waiting to see if their pets are okay. >> reporter: today nose families will get -- those families will get a chance to bring back their furry loved ones. sheriff's deputies will give people 15 minutes to check on the pets they had to leave behind. >> hopefully we can bring some pets back down. that's obviously an -- find some pets that people are missing. >> reporter: so today will either be a day -- another day of grieving or hope for these families able to return home and frank and michelle i want to let you know we did just get some new information. more families will be allowed to return home today. according to the lake county sheriff, families in the clear lake area, that's clear lake riviere yea, riviera west and riviera heights will be allowed

to return home today. cate cauguiran, kpix 5. >> that's good news, all right thank you. lake county public schools are closed today. several districts in the middle of the fire devastation have plans to stay closed for the rest of the week. >> in addition the houses the valley fire has also devastated a popular retreat in middletown. harbin hot springs has long been known for its mineral pools and rustic beauty. a place for people to unwind. well, a historic pool survived the fire, but many of the buildings did not. that includes the retreat center and bungalows now nothing but ash. the destruction has customers already feeling nostalgic. >> the scenery was basically what everyone liked. the -- adobe kind of like housing that type of thing and spas, just relaxing basically. >> relaxing time, healthy food. just center -- nice living. >> and the staff from harbin haven't been able to get to the site and assess the damage there, but on the resort's website they are already promising to rebuild.

and scientists are concerned about another factor that could hinder the four fighting. the snow pack in the sierras is the lowest in 5 had been years with no -- 500 years. there's no relief from the bone dry conditions and all of which makes vegetation more combustible in wildfires. and we have much more on the valley fire online. you can see the continuing coverage at cbssf.com. in the sierra foothills, crews are making some progress battling the butte fire in amador and calaveras counties. nearly 72,000 acres have burned east of jackson. cal fire says it's now 37% contained. 166 homes have been destroyed and 6400 homes are still considered threatened. hundreds of thousands of people are descending on san francisco for dreamforce. but for many, it's not a dream come true. kiet do has more. >> reporter: yes, dreamforce is being billed as the largest software convention on earth. the company is boasting 160,000

attendees. that is roughly the population of sunnyvale crammed into the already crowded san francisco. as a result, dreamforce now has a laundry list of detours and road closures and muni bus rerouting to talk about. visitors are being hold to take -- told to take application transportation and being -- public transportation and being warned of heavy foot traffic. this is only day two of five. the conference wraps up on friday. now with all these people in town, there simply aren't enough hotel rooms to go around so 1100 attendees are staying in an unusual spot. it's a cruise ship that's been dubbed the dream boat and it's docked at pier 27. salesforce partnered with celebrity cruises to offer these unique accommodations after thousands of people got stuck paying a premium last year. rooms on the ship start at $250 a night and it is sold out. >> it's a thrilling experience being on board because we are able to offer more than five star service as a floating hotel. >> it's an interesting idea. as soon as they announced they were going to do it i immediately wanted to stay on

the ship. just new experience, first time. >> reporter: blockages will end on sunday. in san francisco, kiet do, kpix 5. and the conference runs from today until friday. the final clean-up for the overturned big rig that spilled 300 gallons of paint will be completed today. according to the california department of fish and wildlife, crews will work to remove the remaining yellow paint that seeped down a ravine. lucas valley road in marin county will be closed until all waste has been removed from the crash site. a troubling new trend, serious crime on the rise in the city of berkeley. berkeley police are reporting significant increases in crimes such as robbery, aggravated assault, and arson. the report says robberies nearly doubled this year. arson cases jumped from 5 in 2014 to 9 so far this year. and berkeley pd, they're trying to increase the support in schools to prevent future crime. and today berkeley could make it tougher for young people to purchase cigarettes. city council is voting on a proposal to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to people

under the age of 21. according to the council members there, who submitted the proposal, nearly 90% of smokers start before the age of 18. he argues tobacco should be regulated like alcohol. and the city council will also consider a plan to boost the minimum wage to $19 an hour over the next five years. the proposal from the city's labor commission suggests bumping it up 2016 increase to $13 an hour. followed by an increase to $14.50 in 2017 and it would graduallily work its way up to $19 an hour by the year 2020. san jose building developers are taking their fight against the affordable housing lot to the u.s. supreme court. lawyers for the california building industry filed a petition today earlier this year, the state supreme court ruled that san jose can require new buildings to set aside 15% of units for below market rates. developers argue that the requirement for affordable units violates private property

protections. in san francisco, an effort is underway to make it easier for developers to build affordable homes. amendments to a housing ordinance are being introduced to the board of supervisors today. the goal is to speed up production of the below market rate homes. san francisco wants to provide more than 10,000 affordable units by 2020. a san ramon man has the beloved custom car back. someone took a pickup and a trailer containing the '67 ford mustang fastback from in front of mike chadwick's home last friday. sunday the trailer and mustang were located nearby. custom vehicle is worth more than $100,000. a 49er win in last night's home opener didn't stop fans from fighting after the game. the brutal confrontation all caught on tape. >> and tennessee football's popularity is soaring but just not the boys that are playing. women are sign up in record numbers too.

a melee at levi's stadium caught on cell phone and a warning, it's difficult to watch. a video posted to facebook after last night's 49ers' vikings' game shows a disturbing fight. this is in the parking lot of levi's stadium. in the video, people wearing 49ers' jerseys are seen kicking and punching a man wearing a minnesota vikings jersey. kpix 5's reporter doverly will

have more at -- dover fee lee will have more at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. the new all black uniforms last night were debuted. the alternate uniforms will be worn one more time later this season. also the nfl debut of running back jared hayne. he's an australian rugby star and it was a bit shaky. he mishandled the punt leading to a turnover but the niners beat minnesota 20-3 and they will visit pittsburgh. here's the turnover -- on sunday. football season is upon us and 75 million people are drafting fantasy teams. according to a consumer report, nearly a third of fantasy football players this year are women. many of whom are creating leagues of their own. i'm in two leagues by the way frank. >> just two? >> yes just two. the sport though, we know it isn't just for boys. >> well, erica and i -- erica i both are married and at the time were dating men who were obsessed with football. and played fantasy themselves. so we felt if you can't beat them, join them. >> pretty good.

while trump has gained some ground since last month. dr. carson jumped from 6% to 23%. the rest of the competition is polling single digits. the good news for the rest of the field is that only 37% of republican voters say they have made up their minds about who to support leaving trump open to attacks monday night at the debate. >> i hear they're all going after me. whatever, whatever. no i hear it. >> reporter: one conservative group is definitely going after trump. >> we've realized for several weeks that trump wasn't going away and so we decided we needed to do something. >> reporter: club for growth unveiled a new ad campaign. >> he has a record and it's very liberal. >> reporter: the ads will begin airing in iowa this week. cbs news, washington. >> club for growth normally focuses on congressional races but the organization says that trump's proposals to impose

tariffs on companies that outsource manufacturing would hurt economy. deadly flash floods have washed through a canyon in southern utah. take a look at this. motorists stopped by to rescue women and children whose car stopped in the rising water there. fighting the violent water. officials say the floods have killed at least nine people with many still missing. >> as far as who's -- who is survivors and who's missing, we don't know at this point. >> rescue crews are urging motorists to stay off the roads. let's get a check on the weather here in the bay area with roberta. >> good afternoon everybody. we are calling on our weather watchers. they are my eyes to the bay area. so they're seeing things that i can't see here in san francisco. so let's check in right now. looks like we're in the 70s for the most part and it looks like novato reporting 71 degrees to 76 degrees east of the bay in brentwood according to paul smith. jim in napa says 72. and it's 74 degrees according to steve in los altos. we was a picture just sent into

us by suzanne and she had some cloud cover there when she snapped that photograph but now says things are beginning to clear out nicely across the north bay. the east bay now, a few high thin clouds as we take a view out towards mount diablo, current air temperatures in the 60s around the central bay to 74 degrees and livermore. we have a bit of a breeze out of the west up to 15 miles per hour. right here at lick observatory looking out towards the santa clara valley. the coast is trying to clear out after a pretty deep marine layer this morning that caused quite a bit of drizzle. this is a view from sausalito towards san francisco. and visibility is pretty good at this hour. and meanwhile one more stop. this one at the university of california lawrence hall of science, sunshine and refreshing temperatures and we have rain arriving tomorrow. valley fire needs that rain. today some dry conditions. a bit on the breezy side but higher relative humidity makes it beneficial for fire fighting efforts. all right here's the approaching area of low pressure. it has some rain showers associated with it as the showers wrap around the center

the way around. very important. free from any shriveling and a slight give to the touch. not too much. if they're too soft, it's an old crop and when you bite into it it's not going to taste good. when you bring them tome, store term -- home, store them on the counter and enjoy them soon. lake crop peaches don't hold very well at room temperatures. so buy them and enjoy them. there you go. the lake crop peaches in the market. they're great if you buy them ripe. if you don't buy them ripe, it might be a little bit disappointing. so select them properly and enjoy. and i'm tony tantillo your fresh grocer and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. you can still have a great peach right now. well, you'll soon be able to get a beer with your crunch wrap. taco bell is opening a location in san francisco that serves beer, wine, sangria and frozen mixed drinks. that's the first time the chain will offer alcohol with its menu. they're calling it the taco bell cantina. it will be near at&t park.

>> all right. a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed for a san diego woman who died after eating a tainted cucumber. officials suspect the cucumber imported from mexico were tainted with salmonella. according to the centers for disease control, more than 340 people and 30 states have become sick after eating the cucumbers. san diego has begun their -- cu,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,
