griego. frank is on assignment. firefighters made little progress overnight in fighting the massive "valley fire." it's now at 70,000 acres. crews have it 30% contained. so far, 585 homes have been destroyed. but that number is going to rise. one person has died. at least one man is missing. that's leonard neft. he last spoke to his family saturday as the fire burned close the home. authorities found his burned- out car last night that they think he tried to use to escape. the fire burned close to 100 square miles, that's the area in red. anne makovec joined an evacuee on their journey home to find what was left. >> reporter: so many evacuees are in limbo not knowing if their home is standing or not. one by one evacuees are being led back to places like this before they get to their property. many of them have really no

idea what they are going to find. [ crying ] >> reporter: so miss flynn signed up for a sheriff's office escort back home. >> we have to know if we can breeze easier or if we -- breathe easier or if we have to go and pick up the pieces all over again. >> reporter: ray west is hoping to go home, too, although he knows what he will find. >> everything is gone. the barn, the garage, we -- i worked all my life to retire here. >> reporter: he had only lived there for 10 days. >> 2:00 in the morning we wake up, all around us is fire. >> reporter: we followed dan on his escort home. his house still standing. but his cat is nowhere to be found. >> really upset. [ crying ] >> my cat's okay but all my stuff. >> reporter: each person has only 15 minutes at home so dan raced to leave out enough cat

food for his and the cat's next store. >> my whole neighborhood here looks good. all these are all my friends and neighbors. we're just so happy that they all got out alive and there's no houses burned down. oo i am just so happy. >> you can believe all the rumors but you have to see it firsthand. >> reporter: the rumor is that flynn's house is gone. she's just hoping her cat escaped the flames. >> if we find her, it's all good because we have our lives and our animals. with god, everything will be fine. >> reporter: she is not going to be able to check her property until tomorrow. all the escorts today are booked but we wish her the best. in middletown, anne makevoc, kpix 5. cal fire thinks they know where the "valley fire" started. they have pinpointed an area on cobb mountain off high valley and bottlerock roads on

saturday. this caution tape marks the spot where investigators are focusing their efforts. they don't know exactly how the fire started. but they are looking at a burned-out shed next to a two- story home. the house is unscathed but the hillside below is charred leading investigators to believe the fire started in or around that shed. investigators will be out there again today looking for clues. lake county authorities say some people are taking advantage in this fire's disastrous situation. they have arrested looters who are breaking into evacuated homes. in one case, they found suspects with burned-out [ indiscernible ] in their car. another suspect was arrested for possessing burglary tools and drug paraphernalia. deputies say he was prepared to burglarize abandoned homes. and if you would like to help those affected by the fire, the red cross says what they really need right now is cash donations. you can go to redcross.org and designate your gift to victims of the "valley fire." some good news on another

fire burning here in northern california. firefighters are making progress as they battle the "butte fire." the fire in amador and calaveras counties has burned nearly 72,000 acres. about 200 homes and 170 outbuildings have been destroyed. the crews are gaining ground on the fire and it's 45% contained. the valley and butte fires are now among the state's top 20 most damaging fires on record. the "valley fire" is the ninth and the "butte fire" is the 14th. a family of four escaped injury in a house fire. kiet do reports the family just moved into the home. >> reporter: it was a raging single home house fire that quickly went to two alarms here in the east foothills of san jose. take a look at some of the video shot by some neighbors on their cell phones. it shows a fire started somewhere in the front part of the house, possibly the garage area. the homeowners moved in a week ago and were doing renovations. at first they thought the

commotion was a burglar so they called 911 only to find out the fire had engulfed the front part of the house. all four family members got out safely. the fire got into the attic and started making a run to the rest of the house but firefighters were able to cut it off. however, it looks like a good portion of the home is heavily damaged. here's the san jose fire captain to explain why they called a second alarm. >> we were trying to protect the houses around it. when the first engine got on scene, the house was fully involved. that means there was fire coming out of every opening in the house, and some openings were made by the fire. >> reporter: san jose fire was able to prevent any damage to the neighboring homes. in east san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. new signs are going up in one san francisco neighborhood to remind drivers to slow down for pedestrians. today city leaders unveiled these multilingual safety banners in the south of market neighborhood. they read, slow down, we live here. the city has partnered with police, the department of public health and the sfmta to

launch the safety campaign. >> if we all follow the rules and we do education, we reengineer our streets, we would like to get to the ambitious goal that no one in san francisco dies because they are hit in a collision. >> according to supervisor kim, more people are killed by cars than guns in san francisco. the city of berkeley plans to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21. the city council drafted the new ordinance which will take effect in january of 2017. the council also settled on a plan to ban the sale of tobacco within a 600-foot radius of schools. supporters argue that 90% of adult smokers start before 18 years old. an effort is launched to clean up bay area roads. today caltrans and the chp are teaming up to kick off, litter enforcement day. caltrans crews will conduct cleanups along bay area toll plazas, tunnels and freeways including interstate 880 in

oakland and interstate 680 in san ramon. chp will also be cracking down on drivers who litter. the second republican primary debate starts in a few hours in southern california. craig boswell reports, donald trump is leading republican presidential hopefuls. tonight's event has the potential to shake up the race! >> trump, trump! >> reporter: donald trump insisted he is superior to his rivals aboard the u.s.s. iowa tuesday night on the eve of the second republican presidential debate. >> it's an instinct. it's something that special. they don't have it believe me, they don't have it. >> reporter: the real estate mogul will take center stage flanked by 10 other candidates including dr. ben carson, who is closing in on trump's lead. >> if trump ends up overplaying his hand and gets too aggressive and too combative, that could hurt him and provide an opening for carson to move up further. >> reporter: who needs to do the best against trump? >> probably jeb bush. >> reporter: the former florida governor is down to third and has just single-digit support.

the prime time debate at the ronald reagan presidential library expected to last at least two hours. most of the candidates say they will take on trump and push him for specifics. trump, who has insulted carly fiorina's appearance, will share the stage with the former hewlett-packard ceo for the first time. >> donald trump is an entertainer. and i think i am a leade. >> his criticism of fiorina is the harrest and most personal and possibly the most problematic. >> reporter: the major four candidates will debate earlier in the day. rick santorum, bobby jindal, george pataki and lindsey graham start their debate earlier. breaking news in washington the white house is on lockdown! the reason for the lockdown is unclear at this point. we do know that president obama is not in the white house at this time. this is live look and we are

as we deal with fires in northern california floodwaters are sweeping through the southern part of the state. take a look at this dramatic rescue in los angeles.

this flood caught people off guard. three men and a dog were saved from rushing water in the l.a. river. all were found clinging to tree bran. no one had any serious injuries, including the dog. in southern utah, the death toll rises as flash floods wash away entire roads. crews are working around the clock clear debris before more rain falls. the national guard is joining the search for people swept away by the floods. at least 16 have died, four others are missing. ben tracy is in utah. >> oh, no! the vehicle! >> reporter: amateur video captured the power flash floodwaters in hilldale sweeping away a van and suv monday. >> our yard! oh, no! it took the van! oh, my goodness it went over the fence, oh, no! >> reporter: three women and 13 children were inside. only three managed to survive. one is still missing. virginia black watched the

tragedy unfold. >> i'm still really shook up. it's very heart-wrenching. >> reporter: front-end loaders and bulldozers have been working day and night clearing away piles of mud and debris that washed on roadways. roughly 500 people have volunteered to help in the rescue efforts. >> right there is where the vehicles were parked. >> reporter: hilldale mayor phillip barlow says his town is prone to flooding but has never seen destruction this severe. >> we are just greatly humbled by this but we realize this is an act of god and it's something we can't control. >> reporter: in nearby zion national park, four people exploring this deep canyon were found dead. officials are searching for three others. when asked whether or not they expect to find them alive, a park ranger told us, she doesn't have much hope. ben tracy, cbs news, springdale, utah. >> the area is bracing for more storms later today. now let's check on our weather here in the bay area with roberta. it's like a flip-flop in weather. northern california used to get way more rain than southern california and so far this year

they are getting more than us here in the northern half of the state. under mostly cloudy skies, anywhere from san francisco to the east bay in orinda to the north in novato and around the santa clara valley in los altos, we have mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in the 60s and the low to mid-70s. out the door we have plenty of cloud cover and now the rain is entering the north bay. sure, we saw a couple of light sprinkles earlier this morning across sebastopol. now we are getting light rain right there around muir beach. it's moving towards the northern half of the golden gate bridge. the southern half is on the dry side. according to our satellite- radar imagery we have this trough that's tapping into a cold front and the end result is much-needed rain here in the bay area. there you have dry pavement on the southern half of the golden gate bridge. temperatures now 60s and 70s. it is 71 degrees in concord. but the other half of this

story besides the impending rain, the winds currently 13 in livermore and san ramon, napa and fairfield. today's west-southwest winds up to 20 miles per hour. heaviest rain north of the golden gate bridge and as this area of low pressure takes a nosedive south, it's going to fall apart. so we are saying about a half inch of rain in the wettest spots of the north bay and that's where we want it right there with the "valley fire." so rain if you want to watch around the evening commute, the early evening commute, you see it easily dissipate. and then high pressure builds in for your thursday. rainfall amounts up to .4" in ukraine and otherwise barely a couple of spring -- in ukiah and otherwise barely a couple of sprinkles in the area. up to 13 degrees below average east of the bay. here's you have it, today with the very light rain showers, we have sunshine returning tomorrow and then it's a warming trend from friday all

[ overlapping speakers ] [ laughter ] let's take a look at the big board right now. things are looking good today. the dow is up about 127 points. a computer bug is forcing apple to delay the release of new apple watch software. the tech giant planned to release the software but they discovered a bug that's taking longer to fix. they don't know when it will be released. watch os2 is expected to add new faces, let users reply to emails and allow for more powerful apps. it won't affect the release of software for phones and ipads.

the cupertino-based company says the update offers an extra hour of battery life and points out which apps are wasting battery power. to increase secure, users will have to enter a longer six- digit pass code. don't agree with your friends' posts on facebook? soon you'll be able to show it. ceo mark zuckerberg announced that the social media network is working on a "dislike" button after years of people demanding the feature. users will be able to use the button to express empathy for unpleasant news. hewlett-packard is on the verge of another massive round of layoffs. the palo alto company plans to cut up to 33,000 more jobs, more than 10% of the tech giant's global workforce. it's not clear how many of those jobs will be in silicon valley. some analysts say the move may be a step towards selling off part of the company. ceo meg whitman announced last year hp would split into two companies. meanwhile, two companies are stepping up hiring for the upcoming holiday weekend.

u.p.s. says it has plans to hire 95,000 seasonal workers to deliver packages and toys 'r us is bringing on about 40,000 workers for the holidays. that's down from last year. a new report is sounding the alarm on the use of antibiotics at fast-food restau,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
