breaking news out of san francisco. a major interchange is shut down for nearly two hours after shots were fired on the freeway. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette goodrich. the shooting happened just after 4:30 this afternoon at the northbound 280 split to southbound 101. just minutes ago we got word the interchange has reopened. police say a man in one car shot at another car on 280. two men in their 20s were hit. they are in the hospital. the suspects fled on the southbound 101 connector. police are still looking for him tonight. meanwhile it has been a week since the "valley fire" exploded across lake county killing at least three people and burning hundreds of homes to the ground. tonight, weary evacuees are returning to middletown to see what's left. our christin ayers is live along highway 29 and christin, it sounds like it could be a

long road home. >> reporter: definitely. we talked to some of the people lined up along this road earlier today. it was jammed with cars in both directions as far as the i can see. many of those people telling me they just wanted to go home. dozens of evacuees with everything they could get out before the fire roared through middletown. for the past week the wait something the hardest part. >> it's terrible. it's terrible. just nervous right on the edge of wanting to scream. >> reporter: today, it finally ended. >> this is going to allow to you drive within the community. >> reporter: a caravan of whack wes made their way back into middletown to see for the first time what's left. >> i expect about half the city to be gone. i know several friends that have lost everything in a matter of minutes. it just went up.

>> reporter: his apartment survived but others are coming home to scenes like this. everything they owned burned to the ground. their lives and livelihoods left in ruins. but the people of middletown say, this tight-knit town will survive together. >> it's a small community. we all know each other. we can always depend upon somebody to help you out. >> reporter: now, not everyone is going to be allowed back into middletown tonight. butts canyon road is still closed. so a lot of evacuees at the camp or staying with friends not allowed back into middletown. reporting live outside of middletown, christin ayers, kpix 5. several other communities remain closed tonight including cobb and anderson springs. the lake county sheriff says it might be a few more days before people are allowed back in. getting those communities back up and running is more complicated than just re- opening the roads. as you can see, there's still a lot of work to do to make the

area safe for residents. crews are going street by street restringing power lines and cutting down dead trees. hoover are the latest numbers. tonight the "valley fire" is just under 50% contained. it's burned nearly 75,000 acres in lake, napa and sonoma counties. since it broke out one week ago. at least 585 homes and hundreds of other structures are been destroyed but that figure is expected to rise as the burn areas re-open. tonight we have learned the "butte fire" burning in the sierra foothills destroyed hundreds more homes than initially thought. it's now about 500. two people were killed trying to escape the flames. the fire burned more than 70,000 acres in amador and calaveras counties. tonight 65% contained and evacuees there are heading home. >> it's still here. >> it's wonderful. we have been

trying for a few days. >> most evacuation orders for the "butte fire" have been lifted. but dangers remain. firefighters are warning returning homeowners to be on the lookout for unstable trees and power lines and loose rocks. weather is going to be a real problem for firefighters on sunday near the "valley fire." the temperature will be almost 100 degrees tomorrow. humidity is low winds gusting to 20. heat will be a problem in the bay with highs in the 90s in most locations away from the coast. and sunday already has been declared a "spare the air" day, as well. we'll have details in the forecast in a few minutes. new tonight, a $4 billion plan to keep the raiders in oakland goes bust. mark kelly on why coliseum city may not happen and why the mayor says she is not worried. >> we're working diligently to make sure that the raiders know that there's a viable option for them in oakland and they don't need to look south. >> reporter: but whatever

happened to that other plan coliseum city in the developer pitched building a massive new complex mixing retail homes and stadiums for the a's, warriors and raiders. late this week, that became old news. >> i'm disappointed but i'm not surprised. >> don't know the coliseum city or even sports is all that important. i think it's sort of the basic needs that the city has. >> reporter: to finance coliseum city, kephart had to convince oakland to let him buy the 120 acres for the project. and this week, that negotiating came to an end. >> we did our due diligence with this developer over the contract period. but we also had a parallel process where we were working directly with the team. now we are just going to focus our energy in that direction. >> reporter: mayor libby schaaf says plan b direct talks with the a's and the raiders have been very productive. but still fear is swirling around raider nation this could be the final season in the east bay. how disappointed would you be if they left? >> i'm going to stop watching

football. >> reporter: there's not some other team you can imagine -- >> couldn't do it. i couldn't do it. >> reporter: this oaklander says it's time oakland let the raiders moved and doubled down on the a's. >> sorry, oakland, but i think it's better to concentrate on the a's right now. >> reporter: as for the mayor, she is not letting the raiders go. not one bit. >> we expect to reach a really viable proposal with the raiders sometime soon. >> reporter: in oakland, mark kelly, kpix 5. we reached out to the developer floyd kept hard and he said he doesn't want to talk until monday when he has the details from the city. tonight we're hearing from one of the suspects in the brutal beating outside levi's stadium. >> wasn't there to fight anybody. i was trying to go home. that's when this incident took place. >> eric martinez is one of four people charged in the monday night melee. the group was caught on camera going after a rival fan in the parking lot. but martinez says the video doesn't tell the whole story. our sharon chin sat down with him in a jailhouse interview

a suspected drunk driver is under arrest after a deadly crash involving a caltrans worker on westbound 580 near lake merritt overnight. the chp says the car drove into a closed construction area hit a wall and spun into the work zone. the worker died at the scene. the driver was arrested on dui and manslaughter charges. another crash in vallejo sent thousands of gallons of water down the drain. this pickup truck rolled over a fire hydrant creating a guys their shot 50 feet into the air. this is at argon and columbus parkway. quite a sight. the driver told police he put his truck in park but for some reason it kept on going. took workers about 30 minutes to cap the leak. no word on exactly how much water was lost. beaches all over the bay area are a little cleaner this evening. hundreds of volunteers came out for the annual coastal clean-

up. this event was one of several held ins across the bay area. in addition to tidying up the shorelines new landscaping was planted, weeds removed and spruced up sidewalks. some of the trash would surprise you. >> we can't even talk about it because you guys aren't even televising the type of things we found out here. it's egregious in some cases. we are here to make it beautiful. >> among some of the stranger items picked up around the bay a wedding ring, an urn and plastic skeleton. thousands of people filled san francisco's fort mason this morning to help bring awareness to alzheimer's disease. there was a sea of purple as people joined together in the walk to end alzheimer's. people could take part in a three-mile walk or a one mile shortcut and organizers stressed that events like this are important. >> alzheimer's has been the hidden disease. there are no survivors. nobody survivors it. over half of the cases are

super bowl 50 is just over four months away and to celebrated the golden anniversary, the 9ers and raiders are taking their eight combined title trophies on the road. our frank mallicoat caught up with the 50 tour today in santa clara. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: it's a party in santa clara plenty of food. and lots of cheers the 35th annual art and wine festival. only this year, it's got an extra kick. >> super bowl 50! >> go 9ers! >> reporter: the south bay is going super bowling, 140 days away from its golden anniversary at levi's stadium. and the 9ers and raiders are celebrating by showing off their championship hardware on

monday. it won't be as warm next week and it looks like some rain from the subtropical source will not reach this far north. futurecast shows not much in the way of stratus as we roll it overnight a little bit well offshore this is tomorrow morning and it flirts with kind of coming in along ocean beach tomorrow. might by tomorrow night but it's not going to do much to cool you down in land. slight cooling on monday and then really cooling off beginning on tuesday. lots do this weekend. 102 degrees in pleasanton at the harvest festival. and it's warm as well in san francisco. in chinatown for the autumn moon festival on that theme the dragon boat festival 82 degrees tomorrow. lots to do and if you are heading to yosemite 79 degrees. 100 in fresno. tonight overnight warm in the bay area in the low 60s. a little cooler in the north bay. forecast highs well above average. 100 in concord tomorrow. san jose 95. oakland 93. san francisco 86.

south bay the numbers moly in the mid-90s. cooler by the shoreline of course. over in the east bay, it's warmer. the numbers will be near 100 degrees in most locations out there on the other side of the hayward fault, 101 at pleasant hill, yikes. up in the north bay 90s will do it, as well. cooler by the shoreline. and firefighters don't get a break. the numbers up there will be in the mid-90s. we don't get a break until monday. the numbers will be about 100 degrees on sunday and monday. tuesday we'll be in the mid- 80s. but then we cool it down on tuesday. we'll keep it in the mid-80s all the way through the weekend. around the bay we'll be in the 70s. we'll have to wait for relief. here's another form of relief. mr. glenn. >> thank you very large. hey, a 49er coach is home but as a visitor. ha?! what's that mean? and! how to look like a heisman candidate. got to got to show you. coming up.

tomsula grew up about 15 minutes from the stadium. actually he used to sneak in games at old three rivers stadium. the coach should have plenty of friends and family support. as for tickets to the game? >> i don't, um, i have never done tickets. man, i don't --i don't know how you can do that. i don't know how guys do that. they get people calling and tickets and this and that and we'll call --two hours before a game and you're worried about where you're going to put tickets? i don't go. i'm --i got nothing good with it. any home games my wife handles everything. i'm not paying much attention to it. >> we're laughing with you, coach. a crowd filing into the pga bmw championship play-offs outside chicago. jordan spieth body language, didn't like it. and we saw why at the second hole. found the cat box. tied for 11th after a one-over 72. jason day continues to storm through with 269, birdied the 18th to go into sunday's final round with a 6-shot lead 20- under par. he is looking for his fourth win in his last six tournaments.
