57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. pope francis arrives in the united states tomorrow, his first trip ever to the u.s. today, he continues his trip in cuba with a mass in the eastern part of the island nation. yesterday, he met with fidel castro and celebrated a mass urging cubans to care for one another out of a sense of service, not ideology. adrienne diaz has more from havana. >> reporter: the pope's historic trip to the u.s. u.s. is capturing the attention of hundreds of thousands, both old and young. despite rain, thousands of young people welcomed pope francis like a rock star. some climbed trees to get a better look. he spoke off the cuff at an event for cuba's youth. this 17-year-old rodriguez was there. what did you think of the pope's speech?

i loved it, she said. it blew me away. i felt like it was my mom or dad speaking to me. it was the pope's last public stop on his first full day in cuba. he shook hands and kissed babies before the mass attended by thousands. later, 89-year-old fidel castro hosted francis at his residence. in the 42-minute meeting, the two exchanged books and discussed issues. the vatican spokesman father federico lombardi. >> some of the member of the family of fidel were present. >> reporter: this morning, the pope will leave and give another mass where he heads off to santiago to visit the shrine of the cuban's patron state.

adriena diaz, cbs news, havana. a new poll finds 79% of catholic americans approve of the direction pope francis is taking the catholic church. more than half strongly approve. and we will have the latest on the pope's visit to cuba coming up on "cbs this morning." well, this morning, a shake-up in the race for the republican presidential nomination. following her performance in last week's debate, carly fiorina is in second place behind donald trump. in a cnn/o.r.c. poll released sunday, trump dropped to 24% and fiorina was next with 15%, up from just 3% earlier this month. ben carson was third with 14%. brook silva braga is here in new york with more on that. good morning, brook. >> good morning, anne-marie. it is a dramatic jump for carly fiorina, and a drop of eight points for donald trump. fiorina said the debate where she went head-to-head with trump was an important moment in her campaign. >> as people come to know me and

understand what i've done and most importantly, what i will do, they tend to support me. >> reporter: while fiorina jumped in the polls, critics are jumping on trump and ben carson for comments they made about muslims and the presidency. on the sunday talk shows, trump stood by his decision not to correct a supporter who said president obama is a muslim during a town hall meeting last week. >> we have a problem in this country. it's called muslims. we know our current president is one. >> reporter: trump said it's not his obligation to defend the president. >> we can be politically correct and we can say there is no problem whatsoever, but the fact is there is a problem with some and it's a very severe problem and it's a problem that's taking place all over the world. >> reporter: on "face the nation," hillary clinton making her first sunday talk show appearance in four years, called trump's comments irresponsible and potentially dangerous. >> he is fueling a level of paranoia and prejudice against all kinds of people. and when you light those fires,

you better recognize that they can get out of control. >> reporter: also sunday, carson, a devout evangelical christian, said islam is inconsistent with the values of the united states constitution and he doesn't believe a muslim should be elected president of the united states. >> i would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation. i absolutely would not agree with that. >> reporter: the first practicing muslim elected to congress, minnesota democrat keith ellison said it's unimaginable the leading gop presidential candidates are engaging in and tolerating blatant acts of religious bigotry. after carson made those comments, his campaign released a statement that said there are complex differences between the practice of the muslim faith and our constitution, differences that are very real and very much in conflict with one another. >> brook silva braga in new york, thank you, brook. two massive wildfires in northern california have now

destroyed nearly 1,600 homes and this morning, a third fire in monterey county has destroyed ten others. the fire has destroyed ove a thousand acres and is 30% contained and it's one of ten active wildfires that threatens thousands of homes. >> so dry. so hot. now we are getting some wind. the fire has given us a tough time and it's pretty hard to control. >> two massive fires burning north of monterey county are blamed for at least five deaths. the valley fire, which destroyed over a thousand homes, is now the fourth worst in california history. two americans held hostage by houthi rebels in yemen have been freed and in the gulf state of oman this morning. they were two of six released by the rebels. a third american is still being held. the houthi backed by iran are involved in a ferocious civil war and u.s. forces bombed them in march. european leaders hold an emergency meeting wednesday in

the galveston county daily news is reporter that good samaritans came to the rescue of that yacht in the nick of time. a fisherman spotted the fire and pulled his boat alongside the burning yacht. seeing the child on board, he knew he had to act quickly. >> i was yelling, you know, throw the kid, throw the kid! they finally got the kid in the water. so the mom jumped shortly after him and we got those two aboard my boat and my first instinct, man, get out of there! >> despite the size of that fire, no one was hurt. the coast guard believes the fire started in the yacht's engine room. "the arizona republic" says despite an arrest into the investigation of the string of phoenix highway shootings, that investigation is not over. 21-year-old leslie allen merritt is due in court today and he was arrested fire and accused of four of the 11 shootings. merritt insists that authorities have the wrong guy. "the seattle times" is reporting the city's teacher strike is over after two weeks. the educators union ratified a three-year contract with the

school district last night. the teachers were on strike for the first five days of the school year. and "the new york times" reports hackers have made their way into apple's app store and now, more than three dozen apps are affected by malicious software. that is one of the stories on the cbs "moneywatch." jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with most more on that. >> according to a report in "the times" hackers copied a developer's tool and infected at least 40 popular apps, including lee chat and cam card. the malware opens prompts asking users to open the app using their password. apple has removed the apps known to be affected in the store. investors are focusing on whether the federal reserve board will raise key interest rates next month. major stock indexes ended mostly lower last week when the fed held rates near zero. for the week, the dow was down

50 points for the week and s&p off three and the nasdaq up five points. the ceo of volkswagen is apologizing to customers. the environment protection agency said the company's diesel cars were equipped with software to skirt clean air rules. about 500,000 volkswagen and audi models are affected and that is about 25% of the company's sales. the epa ordered volkswagen to fix the cars at its own expense. the company could be fined as much as $18 billion. greece will try to fix its debt crisis with the left wing party that it ousted just a few months ago. party leader alexis tsipras won re-election as prime minister last night and resigned last month after he lost his majority in parliament. far left rebels oppose tougher austerity measures imposed by the european union. coca-cola says it will fight a claim that it owes more than

$3 billion in federal taxes and interest. at issue is how much coke should report as taxable income in the u.s. from its overseas sales. the company says it's been following the same tax rate methodology for 30 years. >> jill, do you know what goes with coke? really good? maybe burger and fries. what is this we are hearing about a couple of fast food giants are not playing nice with each other? >> burger king is expected to give out 1,500 free hamburgers in atlanta today. this is in honor of international day of peace. burger king teamed up with five other restaurant chains to promote the cause by producing a hybrid burger and it's considered one-day cease-fire in the burger wars. mcdonald's, though, declined the invitation to join and it launched its own campaign which includes tv ads in 38 countries and on digital platforms to promote the united nations world food program. >> a bit of a mixed snub, if you will. burger king is probably not loving it. maybe burger king is loving it

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. 19 members of a dragon boat team in the east river off new york city were thrown into chilly water. their boat was swept over by strong winds and large waves on sunday.

this morning, pope francis is preparing for his final full day in cuba. he delivered a mass in havana yesterday in front of hundreds of thousands. the leader of the catholic church will leave tomorrow for a three-city tour of the united states. but it remains a mystery this morning, what issues the pope will highlight when he visits. "cbs evening news" anchor scott pelley met with the pope at the vatican this month for a "60 minutes" report on. >> reporter: as francis made it around to us, we found that he takes care of himself pretty well. bullet-proof against questions in our prearranged meeting. what is your goal for america? [ speaking in foreign language ] >> reporter: to meet people, he told us.

just to meet with them. what can the faithful expect from the year of mercy?
