>> i'm michelle griego. kate tells us some residents who are being allowed to go home are bracing themselves for the worst. >> reporter: more evacuees will get to go home, or what is of it, this afternoon. crews near bonanza springs getting ready to reopen roads in the area. those who live in cobb still can't go back, the roads there still badly damaged by the fire. >> you try to be strong but you can't. your feelings are getting involved. what do you do about your kids? not you, i can do this. but my kids. >> reporter: at the napa county fairgrounds, a few tents and cars are left. at one point nearly 800 people were here. now just dozens. most have gone back home or are staying with family and friends. >> if the county doesn't get involved and the state doesn't get involved, they are in trouble. >> reporter: david free lost his ranch in hidden valley.

since the fire started, he has been staying here. >> this camp stuff you can just dough so much. but it wears on you. you are constantly thinking about what you lost. >> reporter: others say volunteers are getting ready to move whoever is left to other evacuation centers. insurance companies trying to find temporary places for victims but not everyone here has the luxury. >> the ones that don't have insurance, and don't have that stuff, what are they going to do? >> reporter: evacuation orders for north lock loamed, ziegler springs and bonanza springs will be lifted at 5:00 p.m. cal fire says the valley fire destroyed more than a thousand homes. that could rise as clean up crews get deeper into the burn area. the fire is now 70% contained. since it started a week ago saturday the valley fire has burned within 75,000 acres or about 118 square miles. >> and in monterey county, firefighters are making

progress on a pair of wildfires. a fire is burning north of jamesberg and the monterey fire is near the aurora salinas highway .10 homes are damaged or destroyed. today some evacuees will be allowed to check out their homes. meanwhile, investigators are looking into the death of a man whose body was found near the fire's origin. as for the 95-acre l'oreal fire, it is 85% contained. it also began saturday when a loose chain, dragging from a trailer created sparks. hot weather and wildfires combined mean unhealthy air. today is another save the air day for the bay area. people are encouraged to carpool, bike or take public transit. sunnyville charter school employee is behind bars accused of sexual assault.

spark charter school is accused of violating state law for not completing background checks before starting school. the violation was discovered after an 18-year-old staff member was arrested for sexually assaulting an 8-year- old girl. the employee also had more than 600 images of child pornography. the local teacher's union says parents now have a very tough decision to make. >> as a parent i would not send my child here. >> reporter: i would seriously doubt the ability of my school to keep my child safe. right now that is my concern, as a parent, would be how would i know my child is safe? >> it is unclear when sparks will reopen. until then the 160 students can either wait it out or enroll in another school within the district. traffic was backed up for hours on an east bay freeway after a fiery and deadly crash, involving a motorcycle and a big rig. they collided in the southbound lanes of highway 685 at bollinger canyon road in san ramone around 4:30 this

morning. the motorcyclist died at the scene. the crash sent the big rig careening into the center median before erupting in flames. lanes on southbound 680 were closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene. on this final day of this historic trip to cuba pope francis is inviting all in cuba to convert to catholicism. more on the pope's plans for today before he heads here to the u.s. >> reporter: pope francis has already held two open air masses during his time in cuba. one on the eastern part of the island and one on the west. thousands turned out for both. under a scorching late september sun, pope francis celebrated an open air mass before thousands of followers in cuba's third largest city. >> jesus goes before us. he precedes us. he opens the way, and invites us to follow him. >> reporter: the pope has chosen his words carefully

were injured. the fourth suspect in the felony assault case is a juvenile. the incident could lead to two big changes at the stadium. banning booze after halftime and boosting police patrols. officers typically make about 30 arrests at 4ers games, most of them involving alcohol. at a meeting tomorrow, city council members will discuss safety issues. today the 15-year-old santa cruz boy charged with killing his neighbor entered a plea of not guilty. supporters of maddie middleton held photos of 8-year-old adrienne gonzalez. in july her body was found in a dumpster one day after she was reported missing. thieves are stealing cars at an alarming rate in san francisco and new numbers show the problem is getting worse. auto thefts in the city are up 10% this month. this year alone, more than 7000

returning. the dow is looking mighty good on a monday, up 138 points at this hour. that is a good monday so far. >> yeah. so far pretty good. volkswagen stock plummeted 20% today after news spread it cheated on emissions tests. diesel cars are getting pulled out of the automaker's showrooms. chris van cleeve reports. >> reporter: volkswagen and audi dealers are being told to stop selling certain models of cars after a notice from the environmental protection agency. it is a black eye. the epa says it designed a defeat device. it is a switch built into 4 cylinder models that would detect when the car was undergoing emissions tests and switch it to a more efficient mode. the vehicles include the diesel versions of the audi a-3. golf and passant models. car owners don't need to do
