"the late show" with stephen colbert. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom in cbs headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, pope francis is beginning his first full day in the united states. he arrived in washington yesterday. president obama will officially welcome him at the white house this morning. and that is followed by several more events before pope francis heads to new york city and philadelphia. weijia jiang is in washington with the papal plans. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. and good morning to everybody. after a quiet night here in the u.s., pope francis will wake up at the vatican embassy where he is staying in washington. a former meeting is set for about 9:00. after an unforgettable welcome to the country, we will hear for the first time today his message to americans.

the crowds greeted pope francis at joint base andrews on tuesday. they are expected to pale in comparison to those officially welcoming francis to our nation's capital today. francis will begin his first full day on u.s. soil with a grand arrival ceremony on the white house lawn. followed by a private meeting with president obama. >> this is not a meeting between politicians. rather, it's an opportunity for -- to respected world leaders, with significant influence around the globe, to spend some time talking about the values that they hold in common. >> reporter: thousands will line the streets from the national mall just to catch a glimpse of the pope. emily rizly will get to see him up close. ♪ the 23-year-old soprano is one of 90 choir members tapped to sing for pope francis when he celebrates mass at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception this afternoon.

>> we have to be in control and remember everything that i've learned in all of my schooling to try to do my absolute best. >> reporter: conductors chose singers to reflect the diversity of the catholic church in the u.s. a mass held outside for 25,000 people who scored a ticket. and then tomorrow, pope francis will deliver the first-ever papal address to a joint meeting of congress. we expect him to talk about reconciliation with cuba, ways to care for the poor, religious freedom, and climate change. these are issues dear to the pope, but also extremely timely here in the u.s. >> indeed. weijia jiang in washington, thank you. security is tighter in new york city ahead of the pope's visit. police set up security cameras along central park where 80,000 people will gather friday for the pope's procession. barricades have been installed throughout the city. 6,000 nypd officers will work to make sure that pope francis is

safe during his visit. an hour coverage of the pope's visit continues on "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is at the white house, ahead of francis's visit. you can see a special report at 8:45 a.m. this eastern when the pope francis arrives at the white house. this morning, hillary clinton's e-mails are overshadowing her campaign once again. don champion is in washington with the details. >> reporter: the news comes just as clinton made a major announcement about a key environmental and economic issue. according to bloomberg news, federal investigators recovered personal and work-related e-mails thought to be deleted from clinton's server. it is still unclear whether any of those recovered e-mails contain classified information. now, there also appears to be a discrepancy over why and when the state department first asked clinton to turn over her e-mails. a spokesman says the state department first contacted clinton last summer when they were seeking her e-mails on

benghazi and it was then that the state department recognized it had access to relatively few e-mail records from clinton, but clinton has maintained the request for her e-mails was part of a larger effort to obtain the e-mails of other secretaries. all of this comes as clinton said she would not support the keystone xl pipeline. she is siding with environmentalists who say the project is a threat to the planet's climate. now, senator bernie sanders, who is leading clinton in some recent polls, has long opposed of the pipeline and, this morning, some republicans say that clinton is just now weighing in on the issue because her poll numbers are slipping. than >> don champion in washington, thank you, don. donald trump's campaign kept him near his new york city home. he appeared on "the late show" with stephen colbert last night be to defend his latest controversial comments. brook silva-braga is here in new york with more. >> reporter: it was a no-brainer as far as late night tv show goes.

kol colbert interviewing trump. the gop front-runner, who rarely pulls a trump. after welcoming trump to the ed sullivan theater, colbert generally pushed trump on his stand on immigration. and for the first time detailing the cost of a wall on the mexican border $5 to $7 billion, he said, and how he would get mexico to pay for it. >> almost 45 billion dollars, a trade deficit. the wall you're talking about, $5 billion to $7 billion. that's something that actually is very easy to build. we can have a great and beautiful wall. it will be up, it will stop, we will have our border and guess what. nobody comes in unless they have their papers. >> reporter: colbert also offered trump a chance to finally close the book on one of his most controversial positions. >> this is the last time you ever have to address this question if you hit the ball, okay?

be. >> go ahead. >> there is, like, soft all over my hand, meatball so big. >> i want to hear this. >> barack obama, born in the united states. >> let me -- >> it's a meatball! >> i know. >> it's hanging out there! right there! come on! >> reporter: trump said he doesn't talk about president obama's birth place any more, but in 2011, he famously called on the president to release proof he was born in the united states, and the topic bubbled again last week when a questioner at one of trump's campaign events said president obama is a muslim and not american. trump may not have answered the question on "the late show," but he did talk about it with scott pelley for this week's edition of "60 minutes." >> reporter: we were with you in new hampshire when that man stood up. >> yes. >> reporter: and said we have a problem in this country and it's muslims. you let that pass. and i wonder what that tells us about you. >> well, he said much more than that. that was part of his statement. he then went on to say other things. >> reporter: but the bigotry part. >> look.

he said mostly about obama, that whole question is about. i don't have to defend president obama. be he is not going to defend me. be so whether you agree with the man or don't agree, and there were people in that audience, as you probably noticed, that did agree with him. >> reporter: it was a testy moment for a man running for president. >> i don't think so. >> reporter: you never know when they are coming. >> i don't think so. >> reporter: but here you had a bigot. >> that wasn't an attack. you don't know that. >> reporter: you could have slapped him down. >> you don't know that he was a bigot. >> reporter: trump went on to say he loves muslim people, but that some are responsible for some of america's problems. >> brook silva-braga in new york, thank you. you can see all of scott's interview with donald trump on the season premiere of "60 minutes," this sunday at 7:00/6:00 central on cbs. some breaking news overnight. we have learned that legendary baseball player yogi berra has died. the hall of famer died of natural causes at his new jersey home. vinita nair has a closer look at the yankee great.

volkswagen cheating on u.s. emissions tests. the volkswagen board of directors will meet today to discuss the scandal. they could decide the fate of the company's ceo. vw says about 11 million diesel cars worldwide were fitted with that software at the center of the scandal. vw's u.s. ceo offered an apology. >> let's be clear about this. our company was dishonest and in my german words, we have totally screwed up. >> reporter: vw has to set aside 7 billion to deal with the problems to fix the problem. part of increase of a drug willing rolled back. the price hike for the drug daraprim sparked a price hike. it was hiked from a low price to 750 per pill! the pharmaceuticals has not said what the new price will be but the drug will be more accessible.

on wall street, investors are concerned about china's economy and when the fed will raise interest rates. the dow lost 179 points on tuesday, the s&p fell 24 and the nasdaq dropped 72 points. amazon is offering a one-day deal on its prime membership. on friday, amazon is cutting the price of its 99 dollar annual prime membership program to $67. the price cut is for new members and amazon says it's making the offer to celebrate its original series "transparent" winning five emmys on sunday. a judge ruled that the song happy birthday is in the public domain. a federal judge decided that the original copyright for happy birthday to you filed in 1935 granted only the rights to specific arrangements of the tune. the music publishing company that has been collecting royalties ever since does not have a valid copyright and it never had the right to the song's lyrics. >> everyone, sing it at the top of your lungs! i won't. >> for free. >> exactly. you don't want me to do that, though. hena daniels at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot.

pope francis' historic visit to the united states is under way. he received a warm welcome when he arrived yesterday at joint base andrews and was greeted by president obama. this afternoon, francis holds a mass at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. there will ab custom maed chair at the altar. weijia jiang spoke with the carpenter who constructed that chair. weijia jiang is here with more. >> reporter: good morning to everybody again. the carpenter tells us he studied the pope's basilica for guidance and inspiration for this chair. he used local sustainable wood and made it as simple as possible. that is not to say it was easy.

professional carpenter dave cahoon. >> another day at the shop, isn't it, kevin? >> reporter: building furniture is usually an easy job, but he admits this one is daunting because of who it's for. >> the holy father is going to be here and it has been ready for him in time. >> reporter: pope francis will sit in an hand-crafted chair when he says mass in front of thousands on wednesday at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception in washington. it's especially meaningful for cahoon. he is a deacon at his church in maryland. >> an honor and it's an opportunity for me to give back the talent that god has given me. the base is made out of wood. >> reporter: he also built a new altar for the service, meticulously hand painted to march the marble inside the basilica. after the papal mass, the new altar will replace this existing one as a permanent piece of history. >> reporter: using the one that
