d remri yogi.n. tributes throughout baseball for the late hall of famer and yankees legend yogi berra. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. pope francis will make history as he addresses both houses of congress and the first pope to do so. last night he returned in washington following an eventful day. it was a long day that included a canonization mass in front of 25,000 people and an oval office meeting with the president. weijia jiang is in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you to everybody. lawmakers have pledged to put their political and religious differences aside from the day and already what we have heard already from pope francis is any indication, he won't be afraid to weigh in on tough issues even before a tough crowd. pope francis will take his message to a divided capitol hill today. in the first-ever papal address

before a joint meeting of congress. >> i hope the often words of encouragement to guide the nations in the future. >> reporter: while the vatican has kept a tight lid on what he will say, the holy father is expected to talk about immigration, a hot button issue he urged bishops to fight for during his first full day in washington, d.c. 5-year-old sophie cruz handed a letter to pope francis wednesday hoping francis delivers her plea to lawmakers today. >> our immigration my dad in this country. [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: on wince, francis made an visit to the little sisters of the poor. a religious order that is suing the federal government over the birth control mandate in president obama's affordable care act. >> climate change is a problem. >> reporter: it's likely he'll also bring up climate change, another controversial issue.

democratic senator patrick leahy says francis is the perfect pope to address congress. >> whether you're catholic, noncatholic, believers, nonbelievers, he reaches out to everybody and he makes it very clear that if you believe in humanity, then have you to believe in all humanity. >> reporter: but one republican representative of arizona says he plans to boycott the pope's speech because the pope is expected to talk about climate change. gosher who is catholic says the pope is behaving and acting like a leftist politician. >> weijia jiang, thank you. while the vatican describes his visit as pastoral, francis has a political agenda as well. don champion continues our coverage in washington. good morning, don. >> reporter: good morning. speaking to lawmakers here today the pope is likely to expand his messages on climate change, immigration, and poverty. they are issues that are close

to his heart but subjects of intense debate here. in fact, yesterday, the pope was not afraid to make a not so subtle point on immigration. >> i am happy to be a guest in this country. >> reporter: after he left the white house, it was 5-year-old sophie cruz, the daughter of illegal immigration who brought the issue to the pope. >> i saw the pope. >> reporter: what did you give him? >> a letter. >> reporter: her trip was sponsored by an advocacy group. she traveled to washington with her father to deliver a handwritten letter asking francis to urge congress to help all immigrant children. >> i believe i have the right to live with my parents. i have the right to be happy. >> reporter: the pope is also

expected to continue his conversation on climate change. >> climate change is a problem. >> reporter: he'll be speaking to a congress where republicans have resisted climate change legislation. >> there is no one who wants the earth to turn into a trashy. >> reporter: but it will be hard for members on either side of the debate to use the pope's message for a political advantage. >> yes, the pope talks about climate change and immigration and caring for the poor in language that often sounds like it would fit with the democratic party, but, at the same time, this is a very strongly pro life group as well. >> reporter: now there is one subject the pope will not be bringing up here on capitol hill today. francis said he would not be talking about the cuban embargo today. juniper serra was canonized

yesterday. they say serra continued to the spread of disease that wiped out an entire indigenous populations. the pope arrives in new york city today. his first stop is the newly refurbished st. patrick's cathedral. >> reporter: a massive expert. 6,000 police officers will object duty on top of the secret service and the pope's own swiss guard. but this is a pope that doesn't like to be pinned in as we have seen. francis prefers to mingle and that makes guarding him even tougher. so as he moves across the city streets, they will be closed down and they have already shut down traffic near st. patrick's

carly fiorina and senator marco rubio both have 9%. donald trump's feud with fox news is deepening. trump spoke at a conference yesterday at the south carolina african-american chamber of commerce. the business mogul said he would no longer appear on fox news because they had not treated him fairly and trump accuses hillary clinton of starting the so-called birther controversy over where president obama was born. >> hillary is a birther! by the way, don't switch your

votes to hillary, please. but hillary is the one that started it! check it to make sure americans preserve the united states as a land of opportunity. the number of government fingerprints compromised in a data breach is believed to have gone up. government officials say as many as 5.6 million fingerprint images were stolen, that's up from the previous estimate of 1.1 million. the government blames china for the data breach. it could help that country identify u.s. spies abroad. fiber security will be among the topics that president obama discusses tonight with the president of china. president xi jinping leaves washington state today for the nation's capital. yesterday, he toured boeing and microsoft. the two presidents will have a private dinner and also discuss intellectual property and human rights. coming up on "the morning news." sharing the road. we will show you how drivers were surprised to see a plane

♪ ♪ are you kidding me? >> one driver was very surprised when a small plane casually cruised through an intersection near john wayne airport in irvine, california, during an emergency landing. this just released video came from the driver who had his dash cam recording as the piper cherokee briefly passed through. the plane safely landed on the road last week after its engine cut out. on the cbs "moneywatch," more fallout from volkswagen's pollution test scandal and microsoft offers another challenge for apple. jill wagner is at the new york

stock exchange with that and more. volkswagen is expected to meet tomorrow to expect in a new ceo. the ceo resigned from his position on wednesday. after volkswagen admitted it rigged diesel cars to pass emissions test. he said he didn't know about the scandal but accepted full responsibility. here on wall street today, investors will be watching for the latest unemployment numbers and durable goods orders. the dow lost 50 points on wednesday. the s&p fell 4. the nasdaq lost four points. microsoft is planning to sell new smartphones. the new windows powered devices will be premium priced phones and reportedly be sold for roughly the same price as the iphone 6s and 6s plus. the microsoft may introduce the new phones at an event next month. anheuser-busch has acquired another craft brewery. they acquired the largest craft brewer in los angeles county. it was formed in 2011 and expects to sell 45,000 barrels of beer this year. anheuser-busch has spent

this morning, that investigation has taken a strange twist. it is one of the headlines on the morning newsstand. according to the buffalo news, a bad containing rape kit evidence in the case turned up at the home of the mother of kane's accuser. the alleged victim's attorney says the discovery calls into question all of the physical evidence in the case. he says whoever left the bag may have been trying to alert lawyers that the case is not being handled properly by investigators. the "san antonio news express" says two high school football players seen tackling a referee will spend 75 days in an alternative school. the players blindsided the official during a game earlier this month. they will be allowed back to their school in january. the newspaper also says an assistant coach admitted telling the players to carry out the attack. coach mack breed is currently on administrative leave. "the washington post" reports the nfl is the first pro

sports league to have permission from the faa to use drones. the league will be able to use drones to shoot video of practices, but not of actual games. a huge payday is coming for comedienne amy schumer. "entertainment weekly" reports she signed a book deal worth $8 million to $10 million with simon and schuster, a producer of cbs. the title of the book is "the girl with the lower back tattoo." the transportation agency is on track to set a new record for the number of guns confiscated this year. it only took two days to fill this box full of prohibited items passengers tried to bring through tsa checkpoints at dulles airport outside of washington, d.c. through the month of july, tsa officers stopped more than 1,600 guns nationwide and 13 at dull less. dulles. a high school ref gets too involved in the game. we will show you hoe he gave one team some extra help.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. yogi berra, the hall of fame catcher and manager for the mets passedway yesterday. he was as much known for messing up metaphor as he was known for baseball. so i can't help but think this makes perfect sense the way the associated press reported his death today. new york ykees hall of famer catcher yogi bear has died. went to that great picnic basket in the sky! oops. a much more appropriate tribute to yogi berra here in manhattan. the empire state building featured blue and white pinstripes overnight to honor the yankees legend.

he led the team to ten world series championships during his 18-year career. tributes to the hall of famer have popped up across the country. at steinbrenner field in tampa where the yankees told spring training, flowers stand next to the number 8 on the backdrop of pinstripes to commemorate the 15-time all-star. berra's former team honored the late catcher while playing the blue jays in toronto. the yankees lineup card featured an illustration of berra's face and a jersey with his number on the sleeve hung in the dugout. the blue jays won the game 4-0. in texas, a high school football player scored an extra point with a little help from a ref. a kick by louis lorenda of midland lee high school was a little low but there was enough power behind it to ricochet off the referee's head and go through the goalpost. the point counted. the team went on to win the game 35-16. a reminder to stay with cbs to see the giants take on the redskins tonight on "thursday night football."

pope francis will meet congress today after a busy first full day in the u.s. he elevated a missionary to st. hood wednesday in the first canonization ever in america. he also met with 2,000 men and women studying to be priests and nuns. pope francis talked privately are president obama and called for immediate action on climate change.
