studios, this is kpix5 news. >> the pope makes history in the halls of congress in the first ever papal address. he urged lawmakers to address climate change, and the death penalty. but called same sex marriage a threat to families. i'm michelle griego. frank is off. we begin with cbs worter weijia jiang live at the state's capitol. >> reporter: this moving speech was the longest one pope francis has ever given in english. it lasted 55 minutes. he weaved in american values and histories drawing an emotional reaction from both sides of the aisle. [ cheers and applause ] pope francis received a standing ovation as lawmakers welcomed him to the heart of the u.s. government. he is the first pope to address

a joint meeting of congress. >> you are the face of this people. you are the representatives. >> reporter: his speech focused on topics familiar to the lawmakers including climate change and religious extremism. >> a delicate balance is required to combat violence, perpetrate in the name of our religion. >> reporter: he called on a greater understanding of those who come to the u.s. looking for a better life. >> we must not be taken aback by the numbers. but, rather, view them as persons. seeing their faces and listening to their stories. >> reporter: seated behind the pope was vice president joe biden and speaker john boehner. the highest ranking catholics in the u.s. government. thousands watched the pope from large monitors outside. after his speech, francis

people injured. some appear to be quite serious. it could be many people as you see there on stretchers being loaded into ambulances. seattle fire says everyone has been extricated from the wreckage. a collision between a charter bus and duck boat. we will continue to bring you details as we get them. a developing story now in salinas, a three-year-old has been found safe hours after an amber alert was issued. the mother of little jackie left her alone in the family's van with the engine running while she went to get a second child. she came back out to find the van gone. the van was found in a parking lot with jackie inside unharmed. police are searching for the suspect. students in a south bay high school are rallying behind a friend that was hit by a car.

devin fehely is live. >> reporter: the school community is rallying around this injured student on social media. they urge their classmates to wear white in his honor. a somber day on campus here at archbishop mini high school. 14-year-old lucas angelo was critically injured when he ran across the street here at the high school and was hit by an oncoming car. paramedics rushed him to the hospital. he may have suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash. now, police say the woman who was driving the car that struck him, she did stop here at the scene and investigators say neither speed, alcohol, or drugs appear to be a factor in this crash. right now, there have not been any charges filed against the driver and the school community is asking for people's prayers as he tries to recover from this very serious injury. in san jose, devin fehely,

kpix5. the disappearance of a benicia family is now a homicide case. adam buchanan, wife molly, and son gavin have not been seen since the fire two weeks ago. a neighbor believes they were there when the house wept up in flames. >> i saw a car going out. a white truck. >> it is difficult. we don't know who they are for sure. we have a lot of attention being drawn to this case. people want answers and so do we. >> police searched the buchanan's home in benicia and towed away a white pickup truck. their other son is 16 and has been staying with his grandparents. another dead whale has washed ashore, this time in fremont. cate caugurian says it has been spotted floating around the bay

for days. >> reporter: biologists are hiking out to get a better look we have some photos. the whale's body has been on the move. it is a juvenile, 25 feet long. they done know the species. it washed ashore 200 yards south of the alameda creek channel. u.s. fish and wildlife first got reports of it on the san mateo bridge saturday and the tide brought it here. we are told from experts it is very rare for these animals to get washed up in this area. >> we don't get whales this far down in the bay. far too shallow for them down here. it is very unusual. >> unfortunately for hikers an runners, they are going to let this whale's body stay here and decompose. let nature take its course. so it will be quite smelly the next few days. reporting in fremont, cate
