now inside the cathedral as that mass progresses. thousands have lined up outside to see the pope. governor cuomo and senator schumer greeted him on the steps just moments ago. that cathedral is 136 years old. it had $175 million of restoration in order for the pope's visit. cbs reporter kenneth craig is there for the second leg of the pope's whirlwind trip. >> reporter: pope francis is getting a thunderous ovation everywhere he goes. from thousands of followers outside the u.s. capitol -- >> thank you very much. and god bless america. >> reporter: -- and from lawmakers inside the chamber. his speech to congress the first-ever by a pope hit on issues important to him. compassion with which we want [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: francis told congress not to be afraid of immigrants. he called for the end of the death penalty. and he made an indirect reference to same-sex marriage which the catholic church opposes. >> yet i cannot hide my concern for the family,. >> reporter: people were impressed. >> i thought he did a great job in addressing the needs of congress and the people of america. >> reporter: the pope's final event in washington was a meeting with homeless people and charity workers. after a dc sendoff from secretary of state john kerry, francis landed in new york. >> that was kenneth craig reporting. the pope's plea to end the death penalty comes at a critical moment in the debate over its future.

>> society transformed benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes. >> pope francis has long been an opponent of capital punishment and is also against life without parole sentences. the majority of americans are still in favor of the death penalty. but support has been on the decline. in california, a federal appeals court heard arguments last month on whether the death penalty is constitutional. the pope's live address was enough to get some bay area high schoolers up early today. nearly 500 students gathered before sunrise in the gym at presentation high school in san jose. it's the largest all girls catholic school in the south bay. students we talked to say they admire pope francis because of his authenticity. >> just shows his true character and how his true personality really is and is a sign for all of us especially for us teenagers that we don't have to be fake and that we can be who we are and we don't have to be afraid of ourselves. >> and what better way to

engage teenagers than a cardboard cutout of pope francis for some selfies? there were also pope masks and pope bingo. here's what's next for pope john paul ii. tomorrow, he will address the united nations general assembly. he will say mass at madison square garden. on saturday he heads to philadelphia for mass at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. he will go to independence milwaukee and other events. in seattle, four people are death after a charter bus crashed into a duck boat tour vehicle. dozens more were hurt when the duck boat slammed into the side of the bus on a bridge. at least two other vehicles were involved in the crash. firefighters and paramedics set up atrial area at the scene. they treated at least 50 people right there on the bridge. >> we were coming around the curve and he was pointing out the harbor and next thing i know, we hit this bus and just spinning around. and people were being thrown

out of the duck and things like that. >> the chinese consulate says the victims who died were all chinese students at a local college. the cause of the crash is under investigation. we have new information this afternoon about a missing family from benicia. the couple adam buchanan and molly and their 7-year-old son gavin haven't been seen since september 11. its when they went to the cabin in the foothills. it's? the georgetown area east of auburn. the cabin burned down. there are human remains inside of it. the sheriff there says that this is a homicide investigation. joe vazquez talked to some people up there a few hours ago who gave him some new insight. joe. >> you can see the pink splotches here. this is remnants of the fire retardant dropped from up above down on to the flames. the cabin is behind this gate. i took a walk around the property line and through the woods to get a closer look. the cabin was burned to the

ground. it's almost unrecognizable now. charred rubble on a foundation in the backwoods in el dorado county. while investigators work to formally identify the remains of the three people found inside the cabin, kpix 5 has learned investigators has learned they are focusing on adam buchanan's 16-year-old son at home in the bay area at the family home in benicia when investigators arrived with a search warrant. detectives impounded a white pickup that was parked out front. the sheriff's department says the teenager was detained for a short while, while detectives searched the home for evidence. >> i candies close that our detectives have contacted him, yes. >> reporter: what's the situation with him? is he not a suspect? is everyone a suspect until we know what happens? >> at this point there's nothing we're ruling out. >> reporter: we asked the buchanan family attorney about the young man. >> was he up there at one time? >> i'm not authorized to speak to that. >> okay. >> um, there's, um, there's movement, there's legal movement to protect, and that

is what we're going to do. >> reporter: kpix 5 has learned investigators here in el dorado county have been asking neighbors to check their surveillance video for a white pickup truck leaving the area. and, in fact, one business owner says he found two video clips of the white pickup and handed them over to investigators. i will tell you this, detectives are a bit frustrated. even though the family attorney has identified the buchanan family, the detectives are still waiting for experts to go through the rubble here to go through the remains and identify them formally and until then, their investigation is stalled. reporting live, i'm joe vazquez, kpix 5. students at archbishop mitty high school in san jose wore white shirts today a show of support for a classmate who is in the hospital fighting for his life. the boy ran on to mitty road just after school let out yesterday afternoon and a car hit him. kpix 5's devin fehely is at the school right now. devin. >> reporter: this terrible news spread as things do today on

social media where sadness and grief and disbelief finally galvanized into a unique show of support for the young man and his family. with one of the classmates in the hospital fighting for his life, students at san jose's archbishop mitty high school wore white in support for the freshman lucas angelo and his family. >> it was a tragic accident. no one is at fault. and we are hoping and praying that things will turn around. >> reporter: the 14-year-old darted across the street and was struck by a car. the accident has sent shock waves through the school's close-knit community. >> so upset. crying for hours, so was her sister. i can't imagine how the friends are feeling. it's just -- it breaks my heart. >> reporter: paramedics rushed lucas to the hospital. police described his injuries as critical while friends have posted on social media that he suffered a traumatic brain

injury. >> you send your child to school and expect them to come home safe. lucas is not in this incidents. >> reporter: parents here at the school say this is a communities of faith that believes in the power of prayer. and they say that is exactly what they are doing for this young man and this family. in san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. we have new details now on the driver who crashed through a livermore gym. the bay area news group reports the 80-year-old woman nearly crashed into the same gym earlier this year stopping just feet from the door. on tuesday she plowed through the storefront into a workout class killing a woman and injuring five others. the elderly drive mistook the gas for the brake. creepy crawlies in the library. and we are not talking bookworms . >> bedbugs in a palo alto library? come on! >> it may not be just one library, either. why it's so easy for the pests to spread. >> a whale washes up in

you can save over 500 bucks when you switch to progressive. that's a fact. but this whole "blondes have more fun" thing... ♪ standing by for fun. ♪ another death whale washed ashore in fremont. whale carcasses are more common but cate caugiran says this one has scientists scratching their heads. >> reporter: now this whale's body has been on the move east bay regional park saying it's a juvenile about 25 feet long. but they don't know its species. it washed ashore on rocky beach nearly 200 yards south of the alameda creek channel. u.s. fish and wildlife tell us they first got reports of the whale near the san mateo bridge on saturday. and the tide brought it over to this area by the no name trail in fremont's coyote park. we are told from experts it is very rare for these animals to get washed up in this area. >> we don't get whales this far

down in the bay. it's far too shallow. yeah. so it's very unusual. >> reporter: unfortunately for hikers and runners east bay regional park says that they are actually going to let this whale's body stay here and decompose let nature take its course. so it's going to be quite smelly here for the next few days. reporting in fremont, cate caugiran, kpix 5. the city of palo alto has closed one of its public libraries for the next two days because of a bedbug infestation. the pests were found in a couple of chairs at the mitchell park branch yesterday. the city says it is not uncommon for bedbugs to turn up in shared public spaces. a pest control company is now treating the problem. >> it doesn't horrify me. i'm a little surprised that in this brand-new beautiful library, we have bedbugs. [ laughter ] >> but, if i were a bug i'd probably want to choose this library to live in. >> it's pretty nice. >> it is. it's a really nice library. >> the city hopes to re-open

another tragedy in mecca 700 people killed in a stampede when pilgrims met an an intersection. people were tripping over the fallen and the growing piles of bodies made it impossible to get up. go million muslims go there every year. in 1990 more than 1400 people died in a similar stampede.

the largest temporary shelter for "valley fire" evacuees shut down today. the napa fairground in calistoga closed at 10a three other shelters are still open. federal and lake county leaders will host a community meeting tonight at middletown high school. they are going to talk about help that's still available. "valley fire" evacuees from anderson springs will get to return home tonight. cal fire says a mandatory evacuation will be lifted in about an hour. take a look at this. nasa released these images that show the "valley fire" destruction. the burn scars highlighted in orange detail the 76,000 acres scorched. the fire has left many families on a roller coaster not knowing where they will call home next. as kpix 5's john ramos shows us, some kids got a well needed break from all the fire anxiety anxiety. >> reporter: for two weeks the kids from middletown dealt with nature's wrath. today they experienced some of

its wonders. >> sometimes the animals do funny things. >> like what? >> the chimpanzee was going like this. >> reporter: 50 kids from the lake county international charter school in middletown were the guests of honor at the san francisco zoo. the school survived the fire. but many of the kids' homes did not. and it's been tough on everybody. >> just to be able to get out and get away from that and have a break from that, you know, is really healing for them. >> reporter: while the zoo itself was fun, what was really great was being with friends again. the school's director says getting together and sharing their stories has made them feel less alone in coping with the traumatic situation. >> because we're all a big family and it's affecting many people. it's not just a few people. it's a lot of people. >> i'm so excited to be here with all my friends and here and see that they are okay from the fire. >> reporter: it's not the kind of thing any kid should have to worry about. but if letting off a little steam at the zoo was meant to take their minds off it, it looks like it worked. in san francisco, john ramos,

kpix 5. >> the "valley fire" displaced more than 1200 people. well, students at an east bay charter school got quite the surprise today. oakland police officers showed up and they had 10 bikes replacing ones that were stolen. on monday it seems students from a bike mechanics class found about a dozen of their nearly rebuilt road bikes gone. several toolkits also missing. but today oakland police officers stepped in and some of them donated their very own bikes. >> it's our way of giving back to the community. these young children are doing the right thing. they have a robust bicycle program where they fix up bikes and donate them to local charities. we want to be part of that. >> some were their personal bikes but most came from the police department's bicycle recovery units. >> apple fans are camping out to get the iphone 6s coming tout tomorrow. some have been waiting in light

outside the san francisco apple store since tuesday evening. some slept on the ground, others brought chairs. these fans have a couple of hours left before they own the newest devices. meteorologist paul deanno wanted to camp out in sausalito. >> why are you going to sausalito for weather? why not? sunny and 90? i say today it's sunny and 90 degrees. 88 degrees at the kpix 5 mobile weather lab. no breeze today. how about this as we look like at the golden gate bridge with your current temperatures [ there was a 25-degree temperature spread within the city of san francisco today.

a texas high school coach has resigned. john jay high school assistant mac breed is taking responsibility for telling two players to hit official robert watts. one of the players said that coach breed told them, quote, you need to hit him. you need to make him pay the price. the players claim the official used racial slurs against members of the john jay high school team. watts denies he said anything racial. the students are attending a different school they are not allowed to play football the rest of the season. baseball. despite the crushing loss in san diego last night, the giants are still barely alive in the division race against the dodgers. they had a chance to gain a half game on l.a. this afternoon. don mattingly telling clayton kershaw he is coming out of the game in the 5th inning against the d-backs. kershaw was on the hook for the loss. the agony of defeat to the
