live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. just minutes ago, the pope took the stage of the festival in philadelphia. tonight, he will talk to people from all over the globe for the world meeting of families. i'm juliette goodrich. we're going to take you to a live look at the festival. the pope is watching entertainment, including this performance by aretha franklin. and cbs reporter, marley hall is joining us live. what's the energy like out there? >> reporter: juliette, lots of excited and emotional people here in this crowd tonight. a short while ago, pope francis took this stage as he continues to reach out to the faithful here in philadelphia. pope francis arrived at philadelphia's independence hall to loud cheers. outside the building where america's founding father signed the decloration of independence, francis gave his message of religious freedom. >> it is a fundamental right. >> reporter: he spoke from the same lecturn abraham lincoln used to give the address. >> it is imperative that the followers of the various religions join their voices in

calling for peace. >> reporter: pope francis traveled from new york to the city of brotherly love this morning. in the background, a marching band played the theme from the movie, "rocky." as he rode away from the plane, the pope had another of his impromptu moments. when he ordered his car to stop, francis got out and walked to ten-year-old michael keithing. the pope kissed him as his sobbing mother looked on. francis later held a mass and said the catholic church in the u.s. requires a more active role for women. >> it means valuing the immense contribution which women have made and continue to make. >> reporter: the main event will be tomorrow when pope francis will say mass on the parkway. and that's expectedded to draw up to 1 million people. juliette. >> all right, aretha still singing in the background.

how does the pope's visit to philadelphia differ from his visit to new york and d.c.? >> reporter: juliette, when he was in d.c., he addressed congress. when he was in new york, he addressed the u.n. but here in philadelphia, the pope is reaching out to ordinary americans and their families. juliette. >> all right, marley hall, thank you so much for your live report. now an inside look where the pope will be getting some r and r. the st. charles for mayo seminary. leaders spent over a year preparing for the visit. a group of sisters who care for philadelphia's archbishop will prepare the pope's meals. bishop timothy sr. says they are doing everything to make the pope's stay comfortable. >> our focus is making sure his needs are met. he has the opportunity to get some down time, to have his meals. >> and this isn't the first time a pope has stayed at this

seminary. pope john paul visited in 1979. a historic visit is taking place in the bay area. india's prime minister landed at the airport for a swing through silicon valley. it's the first visit by the country's leader to california in three decades. at the top of his list. he'll meet with the heads of facebook, ceo, and google before departing on monday. bay area's indian community is thrilled he is coming to town. >> this is a historic moment when someone is understanding the importance of silicon valley and how much silicon valley can play a role in that. this is a moment we are right now watching history be created. >> the event at the center has sold out and ticket demand was so high, they will put up a video screen outside the arena. >> well, very colorful protest of sorts rolled into wine

country. a wine soul train, carrying dozens of people took off from oakland. the train was a bus. the group planned to stop at wineries owned by latinos and african americans. those taking part say the soul train is in direct response to an incident that happened last month. >> we heard about the disaster with the other black women that were asked to get off the train. and we thought that was just horrible. we're trying to send a message that, you know, if you do things like that, maybe you won't get the support that's needed to continue your business. >> there are about 450 wineries in the region. latinos and blacks own 3% of them. well, this is the incident being referred to members of an african american book club got tossed off the train. officials said they were laughing too loudly and disturbing the other passengers. the wine train ceo later apologized and offered them another trip for free. well, a tour unlike any other is making its way around

the bay area as we count down to super bowl 50, champions of the bay is in pacifica this weekend and that is where chief meteorologist, paul diano is. this is quite a different treat if you're a football fan and support the niners or raiders. hi paul. >> reporter: i tell you what, you have an opportunity to see both. we have all eight bay area super bowl trophies, five owned by the 49ers. three by the oakland raiders. they are right behind me. you can take a picture with them. we have the pacifica fog fest going on this weekend. thousands of folks strolling pal meadow avenue today and tomorrow. the weather ironically did not include any fog. it's gorgeous outside. mainly sunny skies. afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s. we have vendors, food, live music. the only thing we are missing is fog. they have this festival every year in september. the least foggy month in pacifica. let's take a look at the current temperatures. wide temperatures spread, we're sitting at 62 right now. san francisco 64.

look at livermore. still in the 90s. san jose 79. santa rosa 81. san bruno currently 70 degrees. i expect that wide temperature spread to continue warm to hot, inland and continued cooler temperatures near the water, including pacifica for the fog fest. back out here live, we're hanging out by the kid zone. they are doing this up well, juliette. the whole idea is the super bowl in the bay area this year is not just for the folks who come into town and pay $5,000 for a ticket. it's for the whole bay area and allowing it to be a bay area thing for several months at every great outdoor event that we'll have, you'll see the 50 tour. you'll get a chance to experience the super bowl weeks before it even happens. it's a nice showcase. paul, we'll see you in a few, thanks so much. and coming up, washington still feeling the effects from the bomb shell drop by john boehner. the scramble that is intensifying to try and fill his shoes. also, a major change for a county clerk in kentucky who refused to issue same-sex

evan murray. he died last night after collapsing during a game. murray was the team's quarterback and went down after taking a hit. those at the game say he was able to walk off the field on his own. he died a short time later. an autopsy is being done tonight. the ripple effect is still being felt in washington. a day after house speaker, john boehner, dropped the bomb shell that he is quitting. cbs reporter, craig boswell tells us the search for the next house speaker is intensifying. >> it's been an honor to serve. >> john boehner surprising public announcement that he is resigning set off immediate private conversations about replacing him. the early front runner is kevin mccarthy, the current house majority leader. >> i think that kevin mccarthy would make an excellent speaker. >> the california congressman risen quickly through the ranks since his 2006 election. >> i think kevin mccarthy is listening to conservatives and he has a chance to move the house in the right direction. >> there are a number of other

possible candidates and the house begins voting, anyone can be nominated. the winner will need 218 votes. >> it will be very difficult for them. >> california democratic congresswoman says it will be high drama for the entire republican party. >> they have been going through a lot. they have been divided for a long time. >> tea party conservatives who want their positions pushed forward say they will keep pressure on republicans. that leads to questions for some. even in mccarthy's home district. >> i think kevin is good, but can't he get all the cats together and work? we'll see. >> the party will have to decide by october 30, boehner's resignation date. >> some of the other possible contenders include steve of louisiana, kathy mcmorris rogers of washington state, and tom price of georgia. john boehner is scheduled to appear on face the nation tomorrow morning at 8:30 right here on kpix5. well the owners of a half million cars are being told to

lifelong democrat. her lawyer said davis switched to republican because she did not get any support from the democratic party or leaders. the clerk says the rest of her family switched as well. the ntsb investigation into the deadly duck boat crash in seattle could take months. it's the first time the federal agency is looking into a land crash of the vehicles. four international students died. 15 others remain hospitalized. a family from fremont was on board the duck boat. they were injured, but will survive. right now, it's still unclear what caused the duck boat to slam into the charter bus on thursday. hyundai is recalling half a million sonata's. 2011 and 2012sonata made. engines have the potential to stall and cause a crash. there could be metal debris in the crankshaft that could cause the engine to suddenly quit. drivers should contact their

local dealer. well, a taxi company is suing state regulators over uber and lyft. taxis are held to different standards, video surveillance, training, and restrictions on carbon emissions. the lawsuit says uber and lyft do not have to abide by those rules. the state puc, uber and lyft have not responded. and it's that time of year when millions of naturalists head out to check out the colors of the fall foliage. trip adviser ranked the top destination in the number one spot, stowe, vermont. the rankings are based on the quantity and quality of reviews and coming in second place, new hampshire. the third best destination for viewing fall foliage, aspen, colorado. well, a super moon will be visible in the eastern sky

that ridge we've been talking about, that was supposed to move away. did not do so. it actually hung out a little closer than we first thought. high temperatures will remain above average. whereas the on shore flow will keep you cooler in and around the city of san francisco and along the coastline. we're clear this evening. coastal fog moving in late. sunshine for everybody tomorrow afternoon. it will be mild to warm. a cooler start to the workweek as temperatures will drop beginning next week. 83 degrees in palo alto. 87 for a high tomorrow. union city 81. walnut creek 86 degrees for a high. san ramone 87. and 89 degrees. mill valley, your high 81. alameda 75. and highs right around 90 degrees for st. helena. extended forecast, cooler monday by 5 to 7 degrees. we're cooler by tuesday and wednesday. highs only in the mid to upper 70s inland. but temperatures will rebound thursday, friday, and saturday of next week. no rain, could use some rain

through the drought. when they do an energy efficiency project and save that money they feel it right in their pocket book. it's exciting to help a customer with an energy efficiency project because not only are they saving energy but they are saving water. we have a lot of projects at pg&e that can help them with that and that's extremely important while we're in a drought. it's a win for the customer and it's a win for california. together, we're building a better california.

fans at the coliseum came for the barry zito versus tim hudson matchup on the mound. zito making his first start with the a's since 2006 wasn't married, didn't have a baby way back then, but this was probably not what he was hoping for. solo shot off the bat of jarrett parker. in the 2nd to give the giants a 3-0 lead. he was left with a standing ovation. tim hudson didn't fair much better. he walked home to sweet home

alabama. pitch add scoreless first, then he walked three and hit two batters in the 2nd. he also received a standing o. back to the game, specifically jared parker, a two-run job off drew to make it 10-9 oakland. it was 10-10 oakland in the 9th inning, and parker again. a shot into the bleachers for a grand slam. parker belted five home runs in nine at bats for the giants rookie. giants win 14-10. the dodgers magic number to clinch the division stays at two and parker enjoying his 9th day as a baseball player. >> yeah, we can say that. pretty solidly. >> it was surreal, because i have flash backs of the last time i pitched in san francisco and i kind of came in the dugout. i was like wow, man, i couldn't believe i got to be on the field in an a's uniform and receive an ovation because, you

know, when i had last pitched in the major leagues, i thought there may be never another time on the field, let alone for the oakland a's. >> to college football, went 1- 11 in his first year at cal. patience is starting to pay off. a win in seattle would make the bears 4-0 for the first time since 2007. third quarter, jared steps up and he finds kenny lawler who gives the cal the 27-7 lead. 64th touchdown pass. that ties a school record. 27-14 bears at the end of the 3rd quarter, and vick is staffed up in the back field. he fumbles the ball and scooped up by washington. huskies within 6 points at that point. and then bears with under two minutes to go in the game. washington quarterback, jake browning is intercepted by drew. the bears escape seattle with a win and they are now 4-0 on the season. well there's no place like home for the oakland raiders who
