live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> the pope's historic u.s. visit comes to a close. he left rome about a half an hour ago, but not before confronting one of the most controversial issues facing the church in america. good evening. i'm bryan. >> and i'm jewel yet goodrich. cbs reporter marly hal is live for us in philadelphia tonight where hundreds of thousands of people turned out for one last look. marly. >> juliette, for a few hours, the ben franklin parkway here in philadelphia was transformed into a place of worship, and it also marked the end of the pope's historic u.s. visit. >> pope francis held a private, unannounced meeting this morning fwooif people who were sexually

abused as children. later while speak to bishops, the pope promised to hold all sex abusers accountable, and he said, "i remain overwhelmed with shame that men entrusted with the tender care of children violated these little ones and caused grievous harm." barbara doris is a child sex abuse survivor. she wants pope francis to take stronger action against bishops who protected predator priests. >> how can he kiss babies and talk to children and, you know, express all these concern for children and, yet, do nothing. this guy is a monarch, an absolute monarch. if he says they're gone, they're gone. >> francis also spent time sunday with prison inmates, embracing one man, and encouraging all to get their lives back on track. in central philadelphia, large crowds spent the day waiting for the pope's late-afternoon mass.

his largest and last public event. a few seconds of a glimpse is enough to inspeier you for a lifetime. >> on his way to the mass, the pope greeted followers from the pope mobile pausing fre kwlint to -- frequently to kiss children. hundred of thousands of people pass the ben franklin parkway and surrounding streets to be part of the pope's final big event. at the pair -- airport, vice president joe biden led the delegation to bid the pope farewell. >> pope francis is now on his way back to rome. that overnight flight will last more than 8 hours. juliette. >> marly, did anything stand out during the pope's final mass here in the u.s.? >> well, when the pope concluded his mass here in philadelphia, he made a small request, a personal request. he said, "i ask that you pray for me. don't forget."

underscoring the pope's humility and why he's known as the people's pope. >> absolutely. marly hal in philadelphia. thank you. during his u.s. visit, pope francis elevated 18th century spanish missionary to st. hood, but not everybody was happy about it. vandals struck at the heart of sarah's mission headquarters in carmel last night, knocking over his statue and splashing green and white paint over stones, signs, and grave sites. volunteers spent most of the day cleaning up the mess. a pastor at the mission says there shouldn't be any permanent damage. some native american tribes opposed st. hood for sarah shag this many native people were mistreated under the mission system. so far, police don't have any suspects in the vandalism. well, two days after stunning washington with the news he's calling it kwits, house speaker john boehner sat down for an exclusive interview on cbs face the nation. craig boswell on the ohio decision to leave congress and what he's vowing to accomplish

before he goes. >> in an exclusive interview on cbs face the nation, house speaker john boehner said his final 30-day in congress will not include a government shutdown. >> there are going to be shutdowns? >> no. >> boehner has been under intense pressure from conservatives demanding a budget that takes funding away from planned parenthood and demanding his oust if he didn't agree. boehner spoke about that in his resignation announcement friday. >> i don't want to put my colleagues through all this. >> boehner said some private words from pope francis during this week's capitol hill visit confirmed his decision. >> i would repeat them except it would really cause me to cry. >> wiping away taers, the house speaker offered this advice to his successor. >> do the right things for the right reasons. >> boehner's decision to step down won't calm the chaos surrounding his replacement. a group of conservative lawmaker who is pressured the speaker released this statement saying they've not decided who they'll support. >> the new speaker will need 218 votes to get the job, and last day is october 30th. as for how hipts to be

remembered. >> he's a good man. that's all. >> congress has until wednesday to pass a budget to keep the government running. craig boswell, cbs news washington. >> well, the bay area is having its own historic visit this weekend from india's prime minister. very large crowd gathered at the facebook headquarters in menlo park today hoping to catch a glimpse. part in a question and answer session with company, boss, mark zuckerberg, and his message, rather, was clear. silicon valley needed to pay close attention to india as the next big frontier attack. facebook visit was just the beginning of a busy day. kpix 5's maria medina was in san jose with a crowd fit for a rock star. packed waiting to hear from the prime minister. >> and, bryan, you can feel, you can see, you can hear the energy and the excitement out here of the sat center. thousands of people outside here as well as a pretty heavy police presence to make sure everything

goes smoothly. this is a big celebration for the community here in the bay area because it's been decades since india head of state has visited california. we're told this is al sold-out crowd about 80,500 people with hundreds still waiting to try to get outside of the center. we spoke to one man who was weight. here's what he had to say. >> he -- he cleaning up, and the technology and making india better actually sho we are really passionate. india is passionate we have somebody like hinl. -- him. >> and as you mentioned, visited facebook mark sucker berg, as well. earlier today he went to google. tonight's event started at 5:00. he is expected to speak at 7 p.m. back out here live. now, there are thousands of people who are not happy with his visit here today. you can see some of them back here. coming up at 6:30, we'll tell you exactly why they are

unhappy. live, maria medina, kpix 5. earlier today t prime minister met with govrper jerry brown. according to the governor's office t two discuss climate change, renewable energy, and the digital economy. the governor has been very active in dealing with climate change. he made a trip to the vatican to adrez it. speaking of climate change, looked a little different today. the french capitol banned cars on a quarter of its streets to raise awareness of the issue. the city will host a global summit on climate change in november. sacramento state student who helped take down a gunman on a paris-bound train was the real star in this weekend's hornets football game. >> we would like to present anthony sadler with a resolution commending his bravery and heroic acts. >> as you know, anthony sadler and his two childhood friends confronted that heavily-armed man on the train, this warting what french authorities believe

was a terror attack. >> teachers are probably like you have the best what did you do over summer story. that's for sure. the fact that sac state wants to honor me like that i find it pretty amazing. >> sadler is a senior at the university. he says all the attention has cut into his study time a bit, but his teachers are working with him to make sure that he graduates on time. and still to come, a new approach to housing valley fire victims. the answer one bay area man found right outside his own front door. weir about 90 minutes away from a total eclipse of the supermoon. we'll have the details and,,

♪ ♪ the final countdown! if you're the band europe, you love a final countdown. it's what you do. if you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. it's what you do. middle town schools will reopen tomorrow two weeks after the valley fire left much of the community in ruanes. tonight, the 76,000-acre fire is 95% contained, but nearly 2,000 buildings have been destroyed. a lot of people who lost their homes aren't sure where they'll go next, but mark kelly found one man in san jose who may have found the answer right in front of his own. >> back and feeling good, arthur was quickly devastate today see these images from the valley fire. people's homes burned to the ground. >> they've lost everything.

so they're really in shock and grief. >> but taking thoseless sons, he cultivated in the nevada desert about civic responsibility and community. arthur had an idea to help. >> welcome to my little coach. >> and it was parked outside his front door. >> i said maybe somebody should stay in my rv for the winter instead of me putting it in storage, and about five seconds later, i said, yeah, absolutely that feels right. >> instead of collecting dust, arthur's rv, just back from burning man, will soon house a valley fire evacuee, a place to call home for a few months while they rebuild their own home. >> if i can get them something to call home right now that feels safe and private and theirs, i -- i figured that would be a powerful thing. >> but arthur didn't stop there. to connect other rv owners with evacuees, he launched rvs without borders, and the response was quick. >> i said, wow, maybe it's -- maybe it'll work. >> arthur admits this is all an experiment, but if it works, it

can give fire victims a little bit of comfort. >> even more than shelter. it's about reaching out a hand. >> in san jose, mark kelly, kpix 5! sure nice of him. since the fire, lake county has loosened its rules when it comes to rvs. people with at least one acre of property will now be allow today live in an rv for up to a year. meanwhile, the feds are urging victims of both the valley fire and the butte fire in the sierra foothills to register for help. the fires destroyed hundreds of homes between them. workers from fema and small business administration say temporary housing is available at the state level. the department of finances transferring $10 million from california's rainy day fund to help pay for fire cleanup. and still to come, there are plenty of ways to kill a spider. but setting a spider on fire at a gas pump is not one of the smarter ways. smarter ways. how one man's,,,,,,,,,,

a man pumping gas near detroit tried to kill a spider on his tank by setting it on fire. as you can imagine, didn't go so well. this is what happened when he decided to try and torch the kriter with a cigarette lighter. the entire pump went up in flames. the gas station attendant saw the whole thing and quickly pushed the button, shutting down the pump. the driver was alert enough to grab a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. the attendant sumd up the not-so-brilliant move. >> on the camera, you -- do you know gas go boom? >> and he didn't have anything to say for himself? >> he was sorry. he was -- he apologized.

he was sorry. he didn't know. you know, it's just one of them things that happens. stupidity. that's all i would call it. [ laughter ] ft pure stupidity. >> the gas pump was charred but the fire was out before firefighters got out there. believe it or not, the man's car was barely damaged, and by golly, bryan, i think that spider got away. >> that would be the hardest thing to believe. natural selection at work. that's insane. boy, we're on the verge a little over an hour and 15 minutes away from what will be the first supermoon total eclipse in decades and the last one that we can possibly see for decades, if we can see it at all. the conditions are improving for the north and central bay, but there's high clouds over the bay area that might interfere with this. it's all happening at the beginning of sunset tonight. so let's have a look at some of the facts associated with this total eclipse of the moon tonight, a supermoon eclipse, because at totality, the moon

will be 60 minutes away from its closest approach to earth all year. so the moon is very close to earth at the very moment of totality. so if you do get away with seeing moon rise tonight, you'll see it's already in partial eclipse. the moon will look like as the bite taken out of it. then totality happens from 7:11 p.m. until 8:23 p.m. tonight. there are high clouds especially in the south and east bay. north bay is better. the central bay is improving so good luck. i hope you get a good view. it's the supermoon eclipse, as we just mentioned. it appears 13% larger, the moon does, then last april's total eclipse of the moorngs and it's the last total eclipse of the moon until 2018, and the last supermoon total eclipse for decades. but here is where the high clouds are coming from. you can see this low pressure trough that's over northern california but rapidly moving to the south so we just might squeak in this one. hope we do anyway. future cast shows by 7:00

tonight most of the high clouds will be on the south bay where it can really ruane the total eclipse, but north central parts of the east bay look pretty good. high clouds come back in late tonight, tomorrow, and we get a partly cloudy day out of it for monday as we look live over the haze of the city. it's 87 still in concord. 64 in the city and 89 in santa rosa. and here is what weir expecting, stronger on shore flow means cooler weather the next couple of days right through midweek warming up the latter half of the week. so the lunar eclipse 7:11 p.m. totality until 8:23 p.m. when totality ends and then the shadow of the earth begins to recede from the moon. high clouds will interfere with the view, especially in the south bay, but hopefully get away with, keep your fingers crossed, then cooling off through wednesday. overnight lows tonight will be in the mid to upper 50s for the most part, and forecast highs for tomorrow a little bit cooler than average for the first time in a while. 67 in the city. 79 for concord. 79 in san jose, and 72 at oakland. down in the south bay tomorrow, numbers mostly in the mid 70s to

low 80s. over in the east bay, fair skies. and the numbers there will be in the low 80s. up in the north bay tomorrow we'll have low clouds near the shore line and a very pleasant day. temperatures mostly in the mid to low 70s. still warm, though, around ukia 89 degrees. wakeport 88. extended forecast cooling between now and wednesday, then thursday, friday, and saturday we begin to warm it up again to the near 90-degree range. so cool it down, and then warm it up. so stay tuned. we're going to have pictures of that total eclipse coming up on the 6:30 show. >> all right. >> dennis now. >> that's okay. we got all night here. the raiders try to end two different road losing streaks today in cleveland, and colin kaepernick has one of the worst games of his career against one games of his career against one of the,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

today was 100% my fault. there's no -- there's nothing anyone in that locker room could have done to change that game today the way i played. mean whieshlgs the raiders were looking to follow up last week's last-second win over baltimore with their first victory in eastern time zone since president obama's first year in the oval office. oakland was in cleveland where the browns started josh over johnny manziel. second quarter, 3-0 raiders. carr fakes to murray and hits andre holmes 10-0 oakland. under 30 seconds left in the half. roberts again. another touchdown for roberts who caught the game winner last week 17-3 raiders at the half. early 4th quarter. it was 20-10 oakland. murray 6-yard touchdown, gets the raiders the 17-point lead. murray rushes for 139 yards. it's now 27-13 raiders. they're moving. cooper tops it up. browns recover, and they

respond. reaches across the goal line, and that is the touchdown. cleveland, all of a sudden, gain to a 7-point lead. then they get them all back. they are driving for a potential game-tieing touchdown. back to pass. he looks. he throws. picked off by charles woodson, and that's how the game ends. the raiders go into it eastern time zone and win 27-20. >> so the first time for this team to get the first road win, it feels awesome. to go onto someone else's place and get a win is probably the hardest thing in the nfl to do so i'm happy for our team. >> you guys know as well as i know, the last couple of years, these games, we don't pull them out. the last couple of weeks to be able to pull out a tough game is really hijack for this team. >> raiders are in chicago next week. the series started off as the celebration of the a's big 3 but ended with the giants still in the national league west
