hundreds are not happy he's here. good evening, i'm juliette tonight, thousands turn out for a visit and why hundreds are not happy about the visit. >> we go to the sap center where an overflow crowd is listening to the prime minister right now. >> reporter: a lot of excitement and energy outside of the center right now. a sold out crowd, 18,500 people inside of the center now. thousands more outside. many of them hoping to get a free ticket but if you can not get inside there is a monitor to watch what is going on. it is a big celebration for the community here in the bay area because it has been decades seupbd a endia decades -- since head of india has visited california. not everyone is happy. protesters are expected here

homeowner fights back. he was caught on surveillance video ripping off a package from the front porch of a house. it was not the first time. what the alert neighbors did to get the thief caught. >> on friday, ken's daughter was standing at the window of her home. >> someone is running up to the house. >> reporter: ken, a bit of a tech junkie installed cameras across the front of house. they caught the car pulling up, a man hustling up to the front of the house, snagging the package. >> i got to the car and my first reaction was, you know, i can reach in and grab the keys, i can stop them somehow until the cops get them. >> ken grabbed the article of the woman passenger and saw she had a purse in her lap. in a split second i said she has id in here. and i reached in and grabbed it as he sped off. of course, you know, the victory dance. i have your purse. [ laughter ] >> reporter: it turns out the

purse was not much help to the police but then ken posted the videos on claycord and the folks at the local online news blog said it looked similar to a story from 2012. >> i pulled up the old news clip, this is the exact same guy. he really has not changed his clothes much, right? >> reporter: long story short he tells the cops and they arrest daniel price from concord, again, for package theft. it should serve as a warning to thieves, the cam ras are getting better and there area a lot more out there. -- cameras are getting better and there are a lot more out there. daniel price had he might want to look into another career. his film career is not working out so great. >> the homeowner said the thieves were so bold they can see his daughter watching from the window and tried to steal the package any way. >> reporter: police are putting together a list by

homeowners that are william will -- that are willing to access their video. they will be able to e-mail them if their video is needed. 200 systems have been registered. now, taking a live look from the east coast as the super moon plunges into the shadow of the earth. this is something that has not happened in three decades and will not be seen again for decades more. we are within 40 minutes of a total eclipse of the super moon. it will turn the moon a bloody red right after sunset if the weather cooperates. joe vazquez is out where hundreds will watch to tallity unfold. i can not -- totality unfold. i can not wait. >> reporter: hay are gathering. five -- they are gathering here. 500 people preordered tickets and they are expecting an overflow crowd. it is two events at once.

a super moon and a lunar eclipse. let's take those one at a time. first, the super moon, the moon is going to be huge. that is because in the oval- shaped orbit of the moon around the earth tonight is when it is closest to earth. 14% larger than normal. then, there is an eclipse, the moon will pass behind earth, hiding in earth's shadow. >> it is a naked eye event. >> watch are for the moon to change colors as full eclipse is reached. >> because of the refraction of the light through the atmosphere it causes red light to fill that shadow so it looks like it looks like a rusty red color. >> reporter: as i talk to you there is sun on the face there is an opening in the sky what are the odds people in the bay area will be able to see this? >> if they can get away from the fog, odds should be good. >> you can see the skies are

clear over berkeley this is where they are gathering, observation deck. they will be looking up to the sky just trying to see this blood moon as they call it. now, we are talking about how rare it is. last time they had one of these 1982. 33 years ago. next one will be in the year 2033. that is 18 years from now. and this is about as close as the moon gets to the earth. it will be huge and spectacular. >> the deepest point of the eclipse the moon will only be 59 minutes away for the closest approach. it will be a great sight. not that you would know the difference by looking at the moon. it is not that, every lunar eclipse is. joe they are going to have the telescopes available for the public as well, right? >> reporter: they do. you will be able to see it with the naked eye. starting around 7:15 they are saying. but the peak time, 7:45. telescope will be available for folks to get a closer look. >> i am so glad the sky is

super moon. it will be rising shortly, near totality. it might be difficult to spot it at 7:00 tonight. now, total rise in partial near total eclipse. from 7:11 until 8:23. the. s are accommodating, south bay -- temperatures are accommodating, south bay, good luck. a beautiful sight, a rare one. it is happening when the moon is closest to the earth for the entire year. it appears 13% larger than last april's total eclipse of the moon. and in fact it will be the last total eclipse of the moon until 2018 and the last time the super moon is eclipsed until sometime in the 2030s. so, you know, a great opportunity to take your kids out and explain to them how it all works. if you can get away with it. there are high clouds that are over the bay area, luckily they moved from north to south and that is revealing the sky just in time for this rare eclipse

of the moon. future cast shows we have high clouds coming back in later in the night. almost as if the curtain of clouds is parting for the event tonight. a long total eclipse. until 8:23 p.m. an hour and 12 minutes. that is long. now others as i say, the sun shortly, glaring in the upper left corner of the screen. as it disappears and dead on queue. it will look like a crescent moon. must of it is a bite taken out of it by a shadow by the earth. we will give the flow, cooler weather through midweek and to some it up all, looner eclipse at 8:23 p.m. tonight. just a few minutes, high clouds interfere with it a bit. hope it clears up for you. clearing through wednesday and warming up for the later half of the week. overnight lows, numbers in the middle 50s tomorrow, a little cooler than average, 67 in the city. 79 for concord, 79 for san jose
