conference in the past hour revealing much more about the shooter chris harper and joins us with more. danielle. >> reporter: the college is closed until monday. police have not released a motive in thursday's deadly shooting but we are getting a closer look at how it was all carried out. cbs news has learned that investigators found a note left by chris harper mercer the gunman who killed nine and injured seven thursday on the campus of umpqua community college in roseburg, oregon. law enforcement sources say it is several pages long and in it, the 26-year-old made statements suggesting that he may have been depressed and angry. police say mercer was wearing body armor when he walked into a classroom and opened fire. >> so far we have recovered 13 weapons. out of those 13 weapons, we currently have in custody six

recovered at the school, seven recovered at the shooter's residence. >> reporter: the rampage continued until officers arrived a few minutes later. the police chief calls them heroes. >> he fired upon them and there was an exchange of gunfire. ultimately, he was neutralized. >> reporter: hospitals are making mental health professionals available to everyone here in roseburg. community leaders don't have to look long or far to learn how other cities have dealt are mass shootings. a frustrated president obama addressed the nation last night. according to the "washington post," every week of his second term has seen a mass shooting somewhere in america. this week, it's roseburg, oregon. so far, there are no details on the victims. but we expect to get more information today. live in roseburg, oregon, danielle nottingham. a car careens into an eye

doctor's office this morning. kpix 5's anne makovec with the path of destruction in castro valley. >> reporter: looking at the metal and glass it won't be business as usual at this optometrist's office for some time. a woman's car careened into the front waiting room. no one was waiting there yet. it was just after 7 a.m. >> witnesses say she was driving at a high rate of speed. >> reporter: she tried to turn right on castro valley boulevard but instead hit a pole, a utility box and ran over the center median. >> at which time we believe she overturned and, um, went into the building. >> reporter: landing on her roof, hanging by her seatbelt. she was conscious. she had a pulse. she was responsive. >> reporter: power and traffic signals were cut for the morning as nearby business owners began to arrive at work. why the woman may have been

speeding and lost control is still under investigation. >> it could be caused by impaired drivers, reckless driving or a medical condition at the wheel. >> reporter: the damage is extensive. the owner just said it's a lot. he called patients and canceled appointments for the near future. in castro valley, anne makevoc, kpix 5. oakland police have made arrests in a gang sweep. five people are in custody. guns, drugs and cash have been confiscated at oakland, antioch and vallejo. it's part of a multi-agency program called "operation cease- fire." a building old by apple was evacuated today because of a nitrogen leak detected at 6:45 a.m. in a building near the main apple campus. no one was hurt. and people were allowed to go back in about an hour. a benicia teenager is in jail this noon charged with three murders. 16-year-old nolan buchanan is accused of killing his father

and two others then burning the family's el dorado county cabin down could cover up the crime. the sheriff says investigators saw through the boy's lies. >> he told the officer his father, his fiancee and his 8- year-old half-brother drove to the cabin and he stayed behind. >> they found evidence in his vehicle including purse and wallet belonging to the vic sometimes. the eastern seaboard is bracing for a deluge from hurricane joaquin. roads are flooded from drenching rain in norfolk, virginia. but this may be the worst of it for some coastal communities. weijia jang is live in nags head, north carolina. how's the weather now? >> reporter: we have really strong winds and rain. there is good news though. here on the outer banks, officials decided an evacuation order is not necessary but they

are expecting difficult conditions for the next several days. the waves are crashing in virginia beach as a powerful rainstorm makes its way up the east coast. but forecasters say the conditions won't be as bad as they could have been now that hurricane joaquin is not threatening a direct hit in the u.s. >> almost all the models in good agreement now. it's a northward movement well away from the east u.s. coast. only chances of landing are possibly nova scotia. >> reporter: the category 4 hurricane is whipping the central and eastern bahamas for the second straight day. moisture from the storm is causing the heavy rainfall along the east coast. streets are flooding in ocean city, maryland. on the jersey shore, bulldozers created sand piles to act as barriers just in case. >> we're not getting the amount of rain that we thought initially we were going to get which is good news from a flooding perspective. >> reporter: here in kitty hawk, north carolina, the main concern is coastal erosion.

you can see how powerful storm surges could wash away what's left of the beach barriers even though it's lined with massive sandbags. >> no one wants the beach to -- to wash away. no one wants [ indiscernible ] to flood out. >> reporter: the flooding could continue through the weekend. it really is a one-two punch because officials say they haven't even started dealing with the brunt of joaquin's impact, of course, in the bahamas. they have been devastated already. right now, coast guard crews are actually looking for a container ship that has 33 crew members on board. it ran into trouble and they are having a hard time finding it. >> all right, weijia jang in nags head, north carolina, thank you. stockton's mayor is saying little about being detained by homeland security this week at sfo. anthony silva says authorities confiscated his cell phone and laptops and demanded the passwords as he got off a flight from china. he said the same thing happened in sacramento. he thinks he is being targeted

for some reason. some victims of the "valley fire" have come home to more than just fire and smoke damage. the lake county sheriff's office says at least 14 homes have been looted. six people have been arrested but deputies say the numbers could climb. and the "butte fire" in calaveras and amador counties is contained. it burned more than 70,000 acres and destroyed 475 homes and also is blamed for two deaths. a piece of the old bay bridge to be imploded. why caltrans says explosives are the best way. >> and while california conserves, one homeowner guzzles water by the truckload. how much they used in a year coming up. >> temperatures up 5 to 10 degrees for highs today. sunny and warm this afternoon. sunny and warm this afternoon. but changes are on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

in afghanistan, the crash of a military transport plane is not the result of enemy fire. military authorities say the plane went down at an airbase in afghanistan killing 6 american airmen and 5 civilians. the taliban is claiming responsibility. the pentagon denies it. in the bay area, bedbugs will keep palo alto's downtown library closed today, specifically trained dogs will be sniffing for the insects in all parts of the city's libraries. two branches were closed last week because of the bedbugs. librarians suspect visitors are bringing them in. >> and a bay bridge tower implosion is a go. the army corps of engineers, noaa and fish and wildlife have all signed on to use explosives to bring down the tower of the old eastern span. it will be the least harmful on the environment. the implosion is set for november 7. the owners of a napa valley

wine train are being sued for $11 million. the suit was filed by the 11 members of the book club who were removed from the train in august. they say they were victims of racial discrimination. two say they lost their jobs because of it. not all californians are doing their part when it comes to water concentration. rebecca has the worst offender in the wealthy l.a. neighbor of bel air. . >> bel air is known for upscale celebrity own properties. it's now home to california's single biggest water user. pumping 11.8 million gallons. their water bill an estimated $90,000 in one year according to records. >> shocking! >> reporter: tracy quinn is a water policy analyst for the natural resource defense council. the names of mega-users is

sunny and warmer the main headline today. mild and mostly sunny saturday, our transition day. and then by sunday, a chance of rain returns. cool and blustery. really a big transition in the forecast. here's what to expect from the satellite perspective. high pressure building and temperatures, as well. we'll see plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures today and sticking around through saturday. but the second half of the day on saturday into sunday, this area of low pressure drops down from canada and as it does, it is going to drop our temperatures and increase our rain chances, as well. so let's take a look at what to expect. futurecast painting most of our rain right now off to the east and to the south but we do still have a chance of showers in the bay area 20 to 30% chance. for those who don't see showers, however, it's going to be a gray blustery cool day for you so certainly noticeable transition. today, not so much. let's check the high temperatures around the bay today. we're talking low 80s for the south bay. temperatures inland anywhere

one of my favorites, here's tony tantillo on the art of selecting the perfect avocado. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be is with haas variety avocados. i haven't done a tip on them in a long time. this time of year with all the football games going on, sales increase. let me tell you why they use the haas for the dip. first selection and storage. when you buy them, nice color all the way around nice and dark. very important. free from any greening. if there's just a little bit of greening that's okay but if they are all green and you bring them home expect them to ripen properly, probably won't happen. check the stem, slight give to the touch. make sure the stem is attached. store them on the counter. they will turn back in the refrigerator. the reason they are so great in dips and salsas is because the high oil content it had holds up well. the green variety avocados, the other avocados like the bacon variety and the ones out of florida, they have more of a
