a massive wall of flames and thick, black smoke pour from the mall in san jose. the investigation into how it started and the danger it left behind that has some homeowners taking shelter elsewhere. good evening. >> the fire started early this morning at cho senter foods. it quickly went to four alarms. firefighters have been there all day putting outlook hot spots. that store is swell known in the vietnamese community. there's still a danger. >> fire truck after fire truck after fire truck. >> reporter: early this morning, the market turned into

an inferno. >> saw this massive ball in the sky. >> reporter: he raced over and saw the store a total loss. >> one of their favorite stores and one of their main means of food and other things down to the ground. pretty shocking. >> reporter: firefighters spent all morning stamping out the hot spots. >> there's a lot of fuel in any store fire but a grocery store has unique fuels to it. >> reporter: at this point, fire crews are keeping a close eye on the back wall of the grocery store. there's concern that the wall could collapse. >> there's nothing holding those walls up except the corners of the walls. >> reporter: if the back wall were to give way, it would likely crush four mobile homes. the american red cross is finding those families it a new place to stay. back that front, a crowd forms. many crushed to see their

grocery store down. >> maybe i can find another job. but not now. i'm very, very sad. >> reporter: in san jose, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> nobody was hurt. fire crews are trying to figure out what caused the fire. nearby stores are expected to open back up tomorrow. tonight, we have new details on the terror four firefighters went through during the beginning of the valley fire. a report said they were on cobb mountain when the fire started last month. the flames intensified. the firefighters sought safety in a steel garage. the four men were forced to take cover under from portable shelter blankets and call for help. one firefighters had to tear off his gloves to tear the melting plastic away. another couldn't get the shelter out because the plastic cover melted and fused into a protective sheet. he shared a felter with another firefighter. all four men suffered second- degree burns but will recover.

fire insurance is becoming more necessary after four years of drought. but as our reporter tells us, it's getting more difficult to get. >> reporter: homeowners in drought-stricken, fire-prone california have something else to do worry getting a letter like. >> the fire is a risk. >> reporter: even though phil stokes has taken preventive measures and lives on a paved road just a mile from a fire station, the company no long her wants to ensure his home in shingle springs. among the concerns listed, flammable vegetation, wind patternance and -- patterns and accessibility. >> they want to protect me when there's a risk for fire but like now they don't do that. >> reporter: the state

insurance commissioner spoke about this as he was meeting with victims of the butte fire last week. >> i anticipate an increase in nonrenewal letters. we went through the 7th worst fire in california history. it stands to reason the insurance companies are looking at the risks. >> reporter: and state law does allow insurance companies to refuse policy renewals. >> it's scary to think about. >> reporter: this woman lives in the fire-prone marin headlunds. >> it's a catch 22 at this point, and so if you don't have it, what are -- what's your recourse now? >> reporter: in the marin hedlunds, back to you. >> there is a secondary insurance market that specializes in higher risk policies. the state has its plan that's a safety net. tonight, hon president

obama honored firefighters who gave their lives while trying to save the lives of the others. in maryland, 87 firefighters were remembered. mr. obama called them courageous web and mim who selflessly walked through fire. he spoke before houses. >> you remember them as moms and dads, siblings and spouses, friends and neighbors. today we remember them and salute them as the heroes that they were. >> of the firefighters honored, 84 died last year. three others died in previous years. once again, governor brown is refusing to support drone regulations. the governor vetoed three bills that would have been prevented civilians from flying. brown's argument, the proef liveration of california's

deadly shooting at the community college without injury. the aspiring doctor while the shooter went on a deadly shooting rampage in the classroom. he killed her teacher and eight students before turning the gun on himself. >> this is the not the first time evil has shown itself. >> treven is our hero. >> reporter: all across this community, religious organizations are opening their doors for people to join together in prayer for the victims. >> christian, nonchristian, we don't care who you are, you are welcome to come. >> reporter: another local church set up this tent for members to pay for the next 24 hours. this tight-knit community is standing together to get one message across. >> violence will not have the last word in roseburg! god will have the last word!

a search for a cargo ship that disappeared in the atlantic during hurricane wa kind. crews have spotted a field of debris and oil 2 -- hurricane joaquin. crews have spotted a field of debris and say a container has been found. the coast guard found life jackets and life rings. the ship was last seen on thursday, or last heard from on thursday. 33 people were on board, including 28 americans. winds were whipping up 140 miles per hour and waves were up to 40 feet tall at the time

the ship last made contact. a pickup truck washed away in floodwater with a driver inside. he was pulled to safety. one of many emergency situations during historic rainfall in south carolina. the weather is exdreamly dangerous for millions of people. the national weather service posting warnings for catastrophic flash flooding. the rainfall in south carolina is unprecedented. it isn't over yet. >> we've lost everything. >> reporter: record rainfall is hitting south carolina hard. some areas have been slammed up with to 24 inches of rain so far this weekend leading to historic flooding and dangerous conditions. >> what i got on my body is what we have, pretty much everything down there has lost everything. our vehicles, our clothes. everything. we still have our lives. we still have our lives. >> reporter: news cameras captured rescues in columbia on sunday with emergency personnel using boats to retrieve people stranded by the storm.

>> basically, the entire state has been hard hit. it's an historic flood, the likes of which we haven't seen. >> we have swift water rescue teams in place now just trying to get people out of the water. >> reporter: local authorities say they carried out about 140 water rescues in one county alone. the officials are telling everyone to stay home and call for help if conditions get dangerous. president obama has already declared an emergency in south carolina freeing up federal dollars to help with the crisis. south carolina governor nikki haley told reporters the rainfall was monumental. >> we haven't seen this level of rain in the low country in 1,000 years. that's how big this is. >> reporter: the national guard has been activated as another 8 to 10 inches of rain were predicted to fall late sunday through monday. i'm andy rose reporting. >> wow. south carolina is not the only state affected. hurricane wa queens is moving southeast into the atlantic

a wild moose was on the loose in new hampshire today. the animal was captured running through backyards in a manchester neighborhood. at one point, i the moose hurdled over -- at one point, the moose hurldleled over a honda civic. no reports of injuries.

doctors without borders says it's pulling out of the city in afghanistan where the hospital was bombed. the air strike killed the least 22 people, including medical personnel. 37 others were wounded. doctors without borders says the hospital was hit multiple times. the pentagon says it is investigating. says the strike was targeting insurgents firing on american troops. tonight, a monster typhoon is pounding china's south coast leaving a trail of destruction. it is so fierce, it spawned a powerful tornado. it ripped across the town, tearing down buildings, sending cars flying through the area. several fishing vessels were caught up in the typhoon. more than a dozen fishermen are now missing. the typhoon is packing winds as high as 112 miles an hour. check out what's going on in france. 16 people have drowned in flash flooding around the french

riviera. muddy water is flowing down muddy veets and over railroad -- streets and over railroad tracks. you look at stuff like that and you realize there are people who have liveled in the bay area for a long time and have never seen the flooding like that. it can happen when it all comes at with us. while we're all excited looking for the potential of rain that the el nino can bring, let's hope it doesn't come at once. we shall see. last night, we picked up 2/10 as low pressure rolled through california. it's over the southland. a few showers and thundershowers for los angeles. for us, nothing but blue as we look over san jose. concord, 79. san francisco has 66. in san jose, 73. in santa rosa, 73 degrees as well. here's what's happening -- high pressure is going to displace the low that now is sailing

over southern california. low heads out, high build in. by midweek things will warm up. by thursday and fry, we'll be back -- friday, we'll be back in the low 90s inland. we'll wait a while for that. in the meantime, not much in the way of low cloudiness. mostly cloudy skies offshore at the moment and as we roll this on through more and more low clouds build in around the point reyes lighthouse. a few come through the golden gate. besides that, we have a sunny day for monday. that's mt. diablo in the dis. warms up -- in the distance. warms up midweek and no rain. to the bay area, 88 for redding. 88 in sacramento. maybe a thunder or two in yosemite. other than that, it looks like a nice day over northern california. 58 for oakland. livermore getting down to 58 and 54 degrees in santa rosa. for tomorrow, close to average readings. 71 for the city. 77 in concord. 78 for san jose and 75 in

oakland. south bay tomorrow, mostly in the mid-70s. 76 for santa clara. over by the shoreline, nid 6 -- mid-60s and the east bay, won't quite notch 80 degrees except maybe in fairfield. everybody else in the upper 70s. in the north bay, mid-70s for the most part except at the shoreline. by ukiah, still warmer with 86 degrees. 78 for lakeport. 78 for clearlake. extended forecast, looking for things to cool off a little bit between now and tuesday and then wednesday, thursday, and friday, a mild warming trend but low 90s by the time we get to next weekend. october in the bay area. we can get a nice warm spell and we will by next friday and saturday. as for what happens with the bay area sports team today, here's the man, dennis. raiders are trying to make it two straight wins on the road and could colin kaepernick road and could colin kaepernick and the 49ers climb out from ,,,
