from the broadcast center in new york city, i'm elaine quijano. it's tuesday, october 6, 2015. this is the "cbs morning news." the scope of the flood disaster in the southeast becomes clearer. at least 13 people are dead and thousands more are cut off after a week of heavy rain. in flight emergency. an american airlines jet diverts when the pilot falls ill and later dies in the cockpit. and they're growing in popularity. but are they fantasy or fiction? a scandal called into question.

the daily fantasy sports leaks called into question. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at "cbs news" headquarters in new york. thanks, for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning the unrelenting rainfall that devastated the southeast, particularly the carolinas, has mostly tapered off. the system of tropical moisture has moved off the coast. another one or two inches could fall today. the flood remains. there are 13 weather-related deaths in north and south carolina. people who went through hurricane hugo 25 years ago said they had never seen anything

at the very least, stay off the roads, david begnaud, "cbs news," columbia, south carolina. the owners of the cargo ship that sank off the bahamas said the captain had a plan to sail ahead of hurricane joaquin, but the ship suffered some sort of engine trouble and it was left as a sitting duck in the middle of a hurricane. the search for 32 crew members continues. one body has been recovered amid a mass of debris field. relatives of the crew are demanding answers. family members of the 28 missing crew members want to know why the cargo ship sailed straight into the eye of hurp joaquin as it intensified in the bahamas. >> i want them to tell my they let the boat go out. >> i don't know why they didn't steer the ship in a totally different direction. >> reporter: it carried a heavy

load of 391 containers and 294 trailers and automobiles within it encountered ferocious wind and 50 foot seas. it sent out a distress call that it lost power. that was its last commune kangs. the coast guard believes the captain michael davidson thought he could outrun the storm. so far the coast guard count found one body, life rings and an oil slick. families met with the owners of the shipping company monday night to demand answers. >> i'm the president and ceo, so the responsibility wednesday e ends with me. we put tremendous trusts in our captains and crews and all our employees, whether they're at land or at sea. >> the main thing i think is to leave knowing there is hope and there is faith and that's where i stand. i'm standing on faith and hope. >> reporter: coast guard cutters, commercial tugboats, planes and choppers are searching for the missing.

jamie yuccas, "cbs news," florida. on the heels of the a system that pounded the area, heavy rain produced widespread street flooding. at least two drivers had to be rescued from the rapidly rising water a. homeless man was rescued from under a bridge. the co-pilot of an american airlines plane landed the plane safely after a co-pilot had a heart attack and died. don champion reports, the first officer calmly requested an emergency landing in syracuse early monday morning. from syracuse american 550 out of 15,000 to 5,000 a. medical emergency. captain is incapacitated. request handling for landing. >> reporter: emergency personnel

were waiting for the jet when it touched down. passengers said the plane landed calmly. >> when we land, we didn't know the magnitude. we saw the fire trucks, ems. then we find out later on hesion passed. >> reporter: the pilot, 57-year-old michael johnston had been flying professionally for 25 years. cbs news confirmed he died in the cockpit the coneer says of natural causes. johnston suffered heart issues and had double bypass surgery in 2006. his wife said he felt fine when he left. >> as far as we knew in perfect health. when he left yesterday, he seemed per factually fine. he said he spent the last couple weeks losing weight. had lost about ten pounds, set i feel better than i have felt in a long time. >> reporter: hins ssince his su a crew member is expected to get

. >> employees of air france in paris protested against job cuts for 29,000 workers. they stormed into headquarters monday calling for the resignation of the ceo. the angry demonstrators focused on two managers who had their shirts torn off before they were able to get away with the help from police. california passes landmark legislation and daily fantasy sports players are crying. those are just some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the los angeles times reports the california governor jerry brown signed a controversial assisted suicide bill. state lawmakers passed the so-called right-to-die legislation after emotional lobbying by the family of brittany maynard. she moved to on the ground so she could legally end her life last year t. california law provides doctors to provide lethal drugs to mentally complicated adults with a

terminal illness who expect to die within six months. the seattle "time's" reports on the death of another high school football player. kenny bayouy, the 17-year-old. the family held a vigil to mourn his loss. >> it could have been us. we all delivered his. we seen people go to the hospital. >> our hearts are beating. we came here to support and give people love. >> his death follows the death of a high school football player in new jersey last month after he took a hard hit, the walk post says several of donald trump's homes were hacked. customer credit and debit cards may have been stolen after their payment systems were targeted for more than a year. the company is offering affected customers a year of free identity di theft protection. the new york sometimes says there is a scandal in the unregulated world of daily fantasy sports. >> football is already exciting. this is taking it to another
