stabbed multiple times walking down a sacramento street. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. spencer stone was attacked last night. it was caught on camera. kpix 5's anne makovec is live now in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: he was stabbed several times. the good news is he is expected to live. but police say he has significant injuries. we are hearing that spencer stone was stabbed 4 times in the chest suffering wounds to the heart and left lung. this is video from a nearby liquor store and you can see a fight breaking out there in the upper right-hand side of your screen. it happened at 1 a.m. at downtown sacramento "k" street and 21st. stone was out with four others when a fight with another group broke out and led to that stabbing. stone was the only person known to be injured in the attack. the suspects described as two a general men wearing white shirts and bluejeans. they don't know if stone was

drinking alcohol but others in the group were. >> this incident is not related to terrorism in any way. and we know it's not related to what happened in france. >> sacramento deputy police chief referring to, this cell phone video showing some of the moments on a train from amsterdam to paris when stone and two friends took down a gunman thwarting a terrorist attack. >> alex hit me on the shoulder and we tackled him. >> that was stone speaking the day after the attack in august. stone's thumb was almost cut off during the incident. he spent time in a hospital in a military base in germany and he and his friends were celebrated as international heroes and awarded france's highest honor. the two suspects in the sacramento incident fled in a dark toyota camera. they are on the loose. live in the newsroom, anne

makevoc, kpix 5. a surprising development on capitol hill in the race to find the next speaker of the house. house majority leader kevin mccarthy dropped out of the race to succeed john boehner. the california republican was believed to be the favorite and appeared to have the pets to to win the gop nomination for the post but his momentum had stalled amid resistance from some conservatives. in a statement he said, he withdrew when it became clear to him that the house republicans were deeply divided. >> i think there's something to be said for us to united. we probably need a fresh face. i'll stay on as majority leader. what i found talking to everybody, if we are going to unite and be strong we need a new face to help do that. >> mccarthy's decision came as republicans were set to vote on a nominee. boehner postponed the vote to a later date. right now, the hunt continues for an escaped prisoner. we just talked to police who say there's still no sign of the man who took off yesterday. kpix 5's kiet do has more from san jose.

and this guy pulled off quite the houdini escape. he ran through an area that's typically crammed with law enforcement evading k-9 and s.w.a.t. teams all white wearing a pair of handcuffs. now, this happened yesterday afternoon around 2:30 when david nghounoi was walked into the lobby area of the hall of justice with not one but two bail bondsmen. now, there is not much security in the area except for the deputies working the x-ray machine. but there are a lot of officers coming and going. once nghounoi got there he bolted back towards hedding street. the 30-year-old man was seen as far away as 2nd street half a mile away. san jose police mounted an hours long house to house search. they found nothing. >> it was scary. >> the jail is next door but really it's a wonderful place. i'm surprised it's happening here. >> reporter: he is from san

jose. he has two warrants for $400,000 for burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. thin with a tattoo on the right side of his neck, 5'11." call police if you see him. kiet do, kpix 5. just moments ago san jose police release a photo of the suspect. the suspect is identified as david nghounoi. he is 29. new details about three suspects connected to the killing of a therapist on a marin county trail. they likely won't face charges until sometime next week after a court hearing. here are the suspects right here. this is sean angold his hometown unknown. morrissey lampley a mugshot from a previous arrest, busted for drugs in the past. the last suspect is 18-year-old lila allgood. surveillance video and gps led police to the suspect. police say they got a lot of help from the public. >> it is because of the

hundreds of phone tips and information we received just over the past 24 hours we have been able to piece together a huge puzzle. >> investigators say the three were driving the victim's stolen car when they were arrested yesterday in portland, oregon. oakland police hope you can help them find the suspect in the deadly shooting of an ice cream vendor. police are looking for 23-year- old joevan lopez accused of killing jarvis singh. the "valley fire" burned about 76,000 acres. mop-up continues despite the fact that it's now 100% contain. four civilians died. four firefighters were injured battling the blaze. that started on september 12. nearly 2,000 structures were destroyed, 93 more were damage. dogs were called out to the

menlo park library today to sniff out bedbugs of the library closed yesterday after the pests were found in the building crawling all over a chair. after the dogs went through it and found no more bugs, the library was officially reopened to the public. this is the third week in a row bedbugs have been found in a public library on the peninsula. >> we read about this all the time in libraries across country so we are aware that this is a problem that libraries are facing just like hospitals, hotels, other places where the public congregates. >> the other incidents happened at libraries in palo alto. big crowds are expected along san francisco's waterfront as fleet week events officially kick off today. navy ships lining the embarcadero all open to the public and later today the blue angels will be flying overhead practicing for the big show this weekend. now, while civilians are anticipating the upcoming events, it's equally exciting for the service members. >> coming here to the city of san francisco is just an awesome experience.

i had never been to san francisco before. so i got to go to alcatraz, to the golden gate bridge. i got to just eat some incredible food and meet some amazing people. >> you can catch the first aerobatic airshow on saturday and sunday. it starts at 12:30 p.m. the annual fleet week softball tournament is under way at moscone field in the marina. the u.s. marines practiced with the san francisco academy of arts women's softball team today and later today they will play the san francisco sheriff's department. you can get all the information on all the events for fleet week at cbssf.com/fleetweek. work has officially begun to bring the bay lights back. work got under way overnight on reinstalling the 1.8-mile-long light sculpture on the bay bridge. the display with 25,000 temporary lights was removed back in march. it was taken down so maintenance could be done on the cables and the display could be made into a permanent part of the bridge. expect them to be shining again

lawmakers it has suspended e german workers. today the head of volkswagen america has apologized for the emissions scandal and told lawmakers it has suspended three german

workers. over 11 million volkswagen vehicles have sophisticated software that beat american emissions tests. lawmakers don't believe they were totally in the dark about the scandal. >> the american people the epa and their counterparts around the world have been defrauded by volkswagen. the company's word isn't worth a dime. >> also today, german prosecutors raided the company's german headquarters to secure documents and data storage devices. services offered by u.s. airlines are lagging far behind their international competition. airline ratings.com ranged carriers on in flight service, seat size an overall quality. u.s. carriers didn't make the top 10. instead, asia-pacific and middle eastern airlines dominated the list. qantas and singapore airlines were highest among all the carriers. less than a week after reachingist milestone 100th launch, united rocket launch sent another rocket up to space

this morning. it's carrying a spacecraft to test technology for military missions. the rocket will deliver 13 experimental and student developed satellites into outer space. let's get a check on our weather with roberta. >> we have been talking about blue skies for the blue angels all week long. this is just the most pristine week for flying above the skies in the bay area. but now we are looking at a few clouds that are drifting across the sky. that's the scene in san jose. partly sunny skies there. the winds variable under 3 miles per hour and the barometer is rising. pretty high at 30.08 which means high pressure continues to build in. this is the scene from our mount ham cam lick observatory looking towards the santa clara valley. we'll call it mostly sunny. we have thin high passing clouds as we veer out from berkeley at the university of california at the lawrence hall of science. blue skies for the blue angels for the most part but we are seeing a shield of cloud cover

all associated with that plume of moisture that just is way out over the open waters. just trying to undercut the ridge of high pressure. overall we'll still call it partly to mostly sunny. temperatures shouldn't be affected whatsoever because we have this building bulging ridge of high pressure that continues to strengthen and move ever so closely to the state of california. as it does so, boy, we have some fair skies and some warm temperatures not only during the day but extremely mild overnight, as well. and, in fact, lows in the 50s and 60s. 88 degrees today at the state capital. we are talking about mid-70s in the high sierra. 89 degrees fresno merced and modesto. temperate, as well. 75 degrees carmel valley into monterey bay. our temperatures a degree or two warmer than yesterday. from 71 degrees in pacifica, cool spot will be 66 degrees around half moon bay. 70 near the city. 80 in oakland. 70s and 80s on the peninsula. these temperatures are close to

average. once you go inland we are talking about 90 throughout the tri-valley. that is slightly above average for this time of the year. what do you say when you take a good look at this? absolutely virtually no change. the stagnant weather pattern is keeping the jet stream north of the bay area. the coast will be in the 60s to 70s, bayside 70s to 80s and 90s each and every day in our inland areas. in fact, we still have one more thing we want to talk about. it's your fleet weekend. and we have temperatures in the 70s on saturday and sunday and we start off with fog. >> i was up at starbucks and a couple of sailors came up and asked about you. >> yeah? >> they appreciate you pumping fleet week. passion for educating child sh hoping to pr this week's jefferson award winners are combining the passion for science with the passion for educating children. sharon chin tells us they are hoping to produce the tech leaders of the future. >> with the robots lined up like this, is it the same code? >> reporter: sixth through eighth graders program robots to dance in sync. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: the oakland students learn to code at roosevelt middle's first-ever programming and robotics course. retired scientists mark and joanne perra started the pilot

project last year. >> many of these kids have the stuff that it takes, the right stuff, to succeed. >> now we have to do the chicken dance. >> reporter: the danville husband and wife wanted to strengthen "stem" education for low income children. >> they learn how to do something or get through it, say, math or programming or whatever, it's not something that can be taken away from them. >> whoa! >> reporter: mark and joanne helped launch the program in class at roosevelt with school and private funding. it's using a curriculum developed at uc-davis that teaches logical thinking through coding and robotics. the pair themselves helped the instructor mentor students. >> we are in this to see kids succeed and to breathe new success based on that. >> reporter: some students like jennifer shen felt confident enough to enter the annual robotics competition at uc- davis in may. >> i was behind up, i want to do that. >> reporter: not only were they the first time in oakland to

pete in the contest, but they took third place among 36 teams in their division. >> to take third place, we were in shock. it was so delightful. >> reporter: jennifer says learning to code opened her eyes to new possibilities. >> i wanted to be capable of being able to do my own things by programming. >> zelda taught the coding class and coached the team. she says mark and joanne are the students' role models. >> the chance for them to meet them and hear their stories about what they have done and what they have created, it's great for our kids. >> that's it, all right. >> reporter: so for bringing an innovative program to oakland's roosevelt middle school this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to joanne and mark perra. sharon chin, kpix 5. >> the couple also organized family science nights at press school elementary school in

west oakland a program the school has taken over itself. and they are raising money to build a school for children in india. more than a year after one million dollars was stolen in an armored car heist, some of it was found in a southern california backyard. investigators say two armored truck drivers were supposed to transport the cash for bank but stole it instead. they were tracked down and arrested in november. two women were charged as accomplices. even after yesterday's tips, the fbi is still looking for 300,000 in missing cash. record rainfall in the midwest could lead to a canned pumpkin shortage. june rain washed out much of the crop in illinois where 90% of the pumpkins are grown. manufacturer at lib business says pumpkin yields could be off by as much as a third this year and think they have enough supply for your thanksgiving pumpkin pie. but they warn everyone out there, there can be a shortage come december. so buy it up.

over 100 billion bananas are eaten every year around the world, that's a lot! tony has your tips this afternoon for america's most popular fruit. >> well, today's tip of the day is going to be with bananas. i haven't done a tip with them in a long time and they are the number one consumed produce item in the u.s. not in the world. mangos are in the world but bananas in the u.s. number one. potassium, great. superfood. selection and storage always important because they can get over ripe or turn gray from cold weather. but the bottom line is, selection. when you buy them, you want to make sure they are yellow like this. ail lit of green is okay. when you bring them home store them on the counter never in the refrigerator. i like to see bananas getting ripe with brown specks when the sugar comes out. that's when they are ripe and best. bananas. there's your tip.
