right into the house. >> a close call for a bay area couple when a plane came crashing down right outside their door. good evening i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette good ward. we've learned the owner of the plane is also from the bay area. maria m spoke with the couple. >>reporter: they drove from their mart heart home to tahoe. they said nothing could be done to save the victim. >> awful a sudden the house shook and big bang and it felt like an earthquake. >>reporter: image rod mcfadden add his wife will never forget. >> it was scare he. >>reporter: around 6:00 saturday night he and his wife heard a loud crash saw branches falling and then the flames. >> that's when we decided to get out of the house. i thought maybe it was a power

line fell down. >>reporter: but when they walked outside they quickly realized it was a plane. neighbors tried everything they could to save the two people inside. >> but there was no way. it was just the flames were too high. >>reporter: investigators have not released the identities of the pilot or passenger. but can about i, 5 found the beechcraft single plane was registered to konrad yu of oakland. >> it's a shea shame. >>reporter: they describe him as a retired chemical engineer and experienced pilot who flew planes in the vietnam war. >> oh, man very, very nice neighbor. >>reporter: jesse cruz said last week konrad told him he was working on his plane. >> checking out the cash rare. >>reporter: it's a shock to jesse who knows konrad as a meticulous pilot. it's up to investigators on scene sunday to figure out what went wrong. >> we feel badly about the tragic thing that happened,

but on the other hand we feel wow, we're lucky that we got to walk away from it. >> the plane missed the rental home by 10 feet. the home caught fire before firefighters put out the flames. konrad lived alone according to neighbors. maria medina kpix5. thank you. the plane crashed less than a highly from the south lake tahoe airport where it took off. bad day for bicyclists there were two serious crashes in san francisco one deadly. that crash happened this afternoon at market and battery downtown where a bicyclist was run over a by muni bus. joe vazquez was there. >>reporter: i'm standing here along market street and behind me you can see the rails grooved into market street. of course rains roll along here as well as buses. so what happened here according to muni is that the bike rider got his wheel caught in one of the rails, and that caused him to fall over and under the bus

tire. authorities have not yet released the victim's name. he is 48 years old. this happened about 3:30 this afternoon. he died right here at market and battery. police are looking over surveillance camera video as well as audio from two buses to try and find out exactly what happened. >> two buses were driving alongside each other and person on a bike was riding in between them. at some point the bicyclist lost control and fell into the side of the vehicle. >> it's not clear right now why the bike rider was between two buses. did he get caught in some strange wave of traffic traffic did he purposefully divert from his bike line or lose his place all of that is part of the investigation. meanwhile muni has expressed its condolences to the victim's family as they look into this matter. in san francisco joe vazquez. a woman collided with a

bike with horse trailer. she's expected to be okay. east bay dad is in custody after allegedly crashing his car running from the cops and leaving his injured child behind. he surrendered to police this afternoon. on thursday officers of san leandro tried to pull him over in connection with a robbery. they ended up chasing him to oakland where he crashed and ran off. his 6-year-old daughter was still in the back seat. she was injured in the crash but is expected to be okay. tonight cal admits take one of its own professors violated the school's sexual harassment policy with students. the professor is one of the top astronomers in the world. and mark kelly has his story. >>reporter: for cal professor jeffrey marcy after launching to the top of the astronomy profession sexual harassment allegations could blow all of that hard work out of this world. this weekend the new york times reports that four of the

professor's former students accuse him of sexual harassment including groping them kissing them and touching oramas or oramas sanking him. a number of incidents former students say happened between 2001 and 2010. he has been a rising star in the astronomy department. following their investigation administrators are allowing the professor to keep his job. today a cal spokesperson told kpix5 that professor marcy agreed to abide by clear expectations concerning his future interactions with students. if he failed to meet those expectations he would be immediately subject to sanctions that could include suspension or dismissal. >> first snapshots of these other plan et cetera. >>reporter: just this week professor marcy wrote to his colleagues that he did not agree with each complaint that was made, but he also wrote, i

take full responsibility. in berkeley mark kelly kpix5. >> professor marcy said he was not available to talk to us. his wife told us that she supports her husband. governor brown has vetoed a bill that would have forced california colleges to set tougher penalties for students sex offenders including mandatory two-year suspensions for rape convictions. the bill also called for annual reporting on campus sex crime and stalking complaints. the governor said he's already signed other new laws to address campus assaults. he did sign off on a bill strengthening california's mandatory vaccine laws. it requires daycare workers to be immunized against the flu, whooping cough and measles. it also requires daycares to keep immunization records for its employees and volunteers. california is now the first state in the nation to ban schools from using the team name redskins. the bill governor brown signed this morning goes into effect 2017. a handful of public schools still use the name women have

to change it. campaign 2016, the republicans have already gone two rounds and now it's the democrats term to debate. they will face-off later this week in las vegas and cbs reporter brian webb tells us a new poll seems to show the same old issue dogging both parties front runners. >>reporter: the latest cbs poll shows voters have trust issues with hillary clinton and donald trump. clinton scored 35% among democratic primary voters for being honest and trust worth err on the republican side trump comes in even lower at 33%. >> i happen ton an honorable guy. one thing that's very important when i go to new hampshire and iowa and south carolina where i have very good numbers in terms of favor ability. you know why because i'm there a lot. >>reporter: trump is still top dog in the republican race at 27% considered the strongest leader. but he and jeb bush have the highest unfavorable ratings among the republicans with bush dropping 11 points since august. ben carson who is running second to trump gets the best republican numbers for being

honest and caring. carson told john dickerson why he believes congress is so dysfunctional. >> over the last few elections a lot of people have been sent to washington with the thought take maybe some changes could be made. and i don't think anyone is seeing any changes. >>reporter: despite her struggles clinton is still far ahead in the democratic race. the same cbs poll shows her holding on to 46% of primary voters compared to 27% for sanders and 16% for vice- president joe biden. if biden does run he'll have a head start on the honesty issue finishing ahead of all candidates at 61%. brian webb for cbs news new york. as for the biggest debate in washington tonight it's still anyone's guess who will be the next speaker of the house. wisconsin's paul ryan is the gop's top choice but he's repeatedly said he does not want the job. now much of that job involves convincing members to compromise. bay area democrat tells us

see the flames and firefighters trying to put them out but the pilot told them nothing was wrong. the passenger were rebooked on another flight. kids saw a whole lot more than they bargained for on the bay. they saw a shark devour a sea lion near alcatraz. we want to warn you the video is a bit graphic. >> holy. it probably came from the bay. >>reporter: some of the video is too graphic to show on tv. a family of tourists on the san francisco bay shot this cell phone video yesterday and overed it to youtube. you can see the blood in the water. then the fin of the great white begins to emerge circling. a younger member of the party gets excited about seeing a shark eat a sea lion. >> a frenzy. that's a great white. >> it's extremely rare to have a per days on a white shark.

low clouds bloom off the shore line so by 10:00 tomorrow morning little bit sticking to the peninsula down in the san mateo county coastline not much. we'll have more sunshine tomorrow than we had today. even more on tuesday as high pressure builds in and the numbers come up. what's happening there's high pressure over the desert southwest coupled with a high in the eastern pacific and between the two of them pressure is on. so the temperatures are up as well. we'll have a warming trend tomorrow and tuesday before it finally begins to cool down on thursday with fog and low clouds returning to the shoreline it's not unlike what we saw over the good deal of the summer. we're beginning to approach mid october and it's hard to sustain these numbers in the 90s. this could be the last time we reach that pinnacle but it might not be. back to 95 degrees inland on tuesday and then it will cool off by the latter half of the week. here's how we look as we're heading out of the bay area. 90s in the great valley. 93 sacramento 94 at redding down 99 to fresno.
