widespread than we thought. our reporter is live in san jose where the health department just wrapped up a news conference. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the number of people sickened during this outbreak continues to grow. the count now stands at 93 reported cases. and it's begun to spread beyond people that ate at the restaurant. the first case, reported cases for those who ate at mariscos san juan on friday or saturday saturday night. shortly after eating here, they got violently ill. they were feverish, vomiting and had die diarrhea -- and had diarrhea. doctors say the shigella is the culprit and quickly spread from an employee. >> you don't wash your hands after going to the bathroom or you don't wash them properly or completely. and then when you prepare food that's ready to eat, the bacteria gets transferred from the food handler's hands to the food. >> reporter: now, the health

department says workers here are being tested. they have yet to identify the patient zero. but in the meantime, the restaurant remains closed. back to you. three marin county teens ended up in the hospital after overdosing on cold medicine. here's more from tamalpais high school. >> reporter: the school sent out this letter explaining that three students here had been sent to the hospital within the past week because of an overdose of this this cold medicine. kids call it skittles. it's an overthe counter medication that kids are taking in large doorses to get intoxicated or hallucinate. >> it's amazing things kids can find and get themselves in trouble with. >> reporter: the dangerous ingreediant, the cough suppressant found in more than

120 over the over the counter -- over-the-counter medications. a sophomore said she heard nothing of it until the letter came out. >> i was overhearing last period a few kids talking about it and they said they hadn't even heard like of the drug, that three kids were sent to the hospital. >> reporter: the letter asked parents to talk to their kids about the danger and risk of death. >> to not know about it and find out the hard way is far worse than potentially a situation where it gets out and kids say i didn't know about that. maybe i will try that one. >> reporter: school officials department want to speak about this on camera. >> drug overdoses are the leading causes of death. knows are due to prescription drugs. firefighters in sunnyvale are cleaning up after flames ripped through a portion of a strip mall.

investigators don't know what sparked the blaze that destroyed one business and damaged several others. >> reporter: firefighters have been dealing with sporadic smoke and flames all morning long and finally got inside that building at sunrise to get to the hot spots put the fire out. the call came in around 5:00 this morning at the fair oaks commercial center at the center of fair oaks and evlen. it started inside the excluesive cuts barbershop. it had been burning for quite some time before firefighters got the call. it spread through the common attic space and heavily damaged at least two neighboring businesses, including a mexican supermarket. the cause is unknown. there was no one in the building at the time the fire broke out. here in sunnyvale, the battalion chief talked about the danger of the building's facade. >> like collapsing. that thing's really heavy and with any fire, it will fall off. >> reporter: this fire made a big morning headache of the morning commute. the businesses are closed

indefinitely. back to you. and investigators say another fire broke out at the strip mall last week and arson has not been ruled out. a missing 5-year-old in mendocino county has been found safe and sound. brett bowman wandered off with his dogs last night. he was found about 8:00 this morning in a wooded area about two miles from his home. and we found this picture on the mendocino sherr -- sheriff's page a few minutes ago. san jose police say a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian today is likely not at fault. it happened before 6:00 a.m. on a dark stretch of eastbound capitol spri. the victim was struck on the entrance ramp. the man later died at a hospital. police say there are no street lights on the stretch of road which has seen a number of fatal pedestrian accidents. traffic moving again in union city where a massive sinkhole opened up last week. crews are still finishing up

work patching up that big hole on alvarado boulevard. at least a few lanes are getting through. broken water main was the problem. but they had to make the hole bigger to fix that problem before they could start filling in that big sinkhole. nearly a week after the massive mudslides north of los angeles, a body has been discovered. crews removed mud in palmdale, found a man's body in a minivan. that's the wrong video there. the mudslide swallowed hundred of cars during flash flood along the 5. this is the first known fatality found. the pilot of a california- based marine corps jet fighter has been killed in a crash. plane went count in england. military officials say the many plane was and a sea hornet. first it was a no. now it's a yes. what paul ryan says he wants in exchange for running for house speaker. and it seems far-fetched 26 years ago. a look at what they got right

the city of new york is mourning a fallen police officer. 3-year-old officer randolph holder was fatally shot last night while chasing a suspected bike chief. police say he and his partner both ecchanged gunfire with the suspect before holder was shot in the ed head. >> i saw people running. >> and how many shots?

10 to 12. >> holder a five-year vert on the force. the fourth officer killed in new york city in the last 11 months. republicans may finally have a candidate for speaker of the house. paul ryan of wisconsin says he will run but reporter craig boswell says the agreement comes with conditions. >> house republican members arrived this morning for a closed-door meeting to try to hammer out who is going to be the next speaker of the house. >> if it's not paul ryan, i think it's a disaster. >> reporter: paul ryan says he's changed his mind and will run for the position but only if everyone agrees. >> we as a conference should unify now and not after a divisive speaker election. >> reporter: the house freedom caucus, the group that helped push john boehner into retirement, still has to decide if it will support ryan. >> it may be impossible for the congress to reach. he clearly doesn't want to do the job. he wants to be drafted here is the list of demands. i want a speaker that serves the membership, not the other

surfing. thieves look over your shoulder spying on people's pin numbers. once the person leaves, the crooks begin a new transaction and pocket the money. >> this is a nationwide trend. it's an easy way to do it. you can walk right up to the atm machine, look over somebody's shoulder. you can take a few hundred dollars. >> police say the thieves targeted the bank of america on east 14th street in san leandro. and in today's jobs report, joe looks at the boom in construction jobs. >> when the housing bubble burst it took 2.2 million construction jobs with it. now that the market is normalizing, many of those jobs are returning. the government predicts thanler 1.6 thanler 1 -- there will be 1.6 million jobs by 2022. you don't need to be a plumber or carpenter to take advantage of the building boom. someone needs to oversee the projects from beginning to end.
