now. the west coast of mexico bracing for a storm the likes of which have never been seen in the pacific. hurricane patricia still offshore packing 200-mile-an- hour winds. it's bearing down on puerto vallarta. it's expected to make landfall in a few hours. people in puerto vallarta are preparing at this time. windows being boarded up, evacuations continue, tourists are trying to get out while they can. >> yesterday they were talking about a hurricane coming in and we have to fetch our connecting flights from mexico to the netherlands tonight. so we have to fly out. >> remember, this hurricane mushroomed out of nowhere. there wasn't a lot of advance notice. some hotels have evacuated their guests by busing them inland. and flights to mexico are being canceled at airports across the country. >> our lisa chan has been checking the boards at sfo. lisa. >> reporter: good afternoon. alaska airlines flight was

supposed to leave here to puerto vallarta at 10:44 a.m. but it was canceled. in fact, the lines at the alaska airlines desk were very short because no one on that flight even showed up. the airline contacted passengers with the cancellation. this was one of a dozen canceled flights between california and mexico because of hurricane patricia. >> my son was getting married down there. we were going to fly in today and spend a couple of days and the whole family together. patricia decided no. >> we decided to spend the night here rather than fly in. >> reporter: that couple is from australia. they are trying to get to mexico for their son's wedding. but they got stranded in los angeles because their flight was canceled. now, still no word yet on when flights might resume. live at sfo, lisa chan, kpix 5.

>> the last monster storm in the pacific was typhoon haiyan. it hit the philippines in 2013 one of the strongest storms ever recorded at that time killing over 6,000 people. roberta gonzales looks at patricia's potential. >> reporter: hurricane patricia the strongest hurricane on record in the western hemisphere anticipating landfall later this afternoon into the evening hours. more powerful than hurricane camille back in the late 60s. more powerful than andrew in 1992 and even stronger and potentially more deadly than hurricane katrina in 2005. there you see it right there off the gulf of mexico. approximately about 200 miles just off the manifesto coast. >> patricia is causing problems in the united states. drenching rain is falling in parts of texas today.

heavy rain triggered flash floods yesterday. dozens of people had to be rescued from their homes and their cars. developing news in the east bay. san leandro police officers were in a shooting this morning on 137th avenue near bancroft around 9 a.m. officers were called to a home on a report of a suicidal man armed with a gun. they attempted to speak with him as he sat in a parked car. police say there was a confrontation and at least one officer opened fire. the man was injured and taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. no officers were hurt. san leandro high school was briefly locked down after the shooting but has since reopened. an early-morning fire forces five people from their san jose home. as kiet do reports the fire shows a problem unique to the bay area. >> reporter: this is not your typical east san jose house fire. this is connected to a much deeper problem. the bay area housing crisis. overcrowded homes catching on

fire is becoming more common place. check this video of residents trying to battle the flames with a garden hose. this started at 2 a.m. when the tenants saw smoke and flames and called the fire department. it was engulfed when the crew got here. a mad scramble to get five people an seven dogs out. they did it. everybody is okay and they are all together now. pg&e says the power was cut off back in march and the residents have been using gas-powered generators ever since. tenants say they have been using candles to see at night and that's what started the fire. this is not unusual in the bay area where rent is sky high. >> people don't pay their bills. they continue to live in the house without electricity. rents are high. as rents go up they put more and more people into the house to share the spokespersons. there's more property and more people to get out of the house in the event of a fire. >> when people see this and they hear you haven't had power for a couple of months, there might be a temptation to judge

you goo you just yeah, well, they can judge us all them. they don't know us. and they don't know what's really going on. >> reporter: the red cross has been helping residents to get back on their feet. kiet do, kpix 5. another fire in suisun city displaced nearly a dozen familiar police at 2:30 a.m. 11 of the 12 units inside the apartment building are damaged or destroyed. no word on the cause. the search continues in the east bay for a man who stabbed three employees at a market. it happened just before 8:30 last night at a winco store on north park boulevard in pittsburg. the suspect allegedly took some shaving razors and tried to leave without paying for them. some store employees confront him. >> they tried to stop him. he started swinging a knife stabbing everybody. he was saying, let me go. let me go. that's it. >> one worker was stabbed in

the back, all are expected to survive. officers searched for the knife but didn't find the suspect. also in pittsburg a deadly crash closed a stretch of the pittsburg-antioch highway. police say a car overturned near loveridge road about 11 p.m. the two people in the car were ejected. one was killed. the crash brought down some power lines forcing the road closure. at last check it's still shut down. a warning today about a potentially fatal counterfeit drug used to treat anxiety. public health officials are warning people not buy xanax on the streets of san francisco. they say the counterfeit pills contain an opiod that can cause overdose and death. four people have overdosed this month after taking the fake pills. one person has died. now checking some bay area headlines another earthquake rattled san ramon this morning. the 3.2 hit just before 7 a.m. it's one of five overnight and one of hundreds since last week. the number of people sickened by a shigella outbreak

has now reached 141. infections have spread from santa clara all the way down to santa cruz. the source of the outbreak has been traced to marisco's restaurant in san jose. they are closed. and kids in alameda county can start riding the bus to school for free. the county is trying a pilot program for most middle and high school students. a $2 million contract with the san francisco company was approved by transit authorities yesterday. ac transit will pay more than $2 million to an oakland bicyclist. andria borba shows us the surveillance video that led to that payment. reporter: it was july 17, 2012. cara mcclendon was riding her bike on san pablo avenue in emeryville when an ac transit driver taking a turn three times faster than that agency's internal regulations allowed plowed into her. >> at the moment of impact, the speed's around 15 miles an hour. >> reporter: we are showing you ac transit's own surveillance video of the crash from driver lynn jackson's bus right up until the moment of impact.

[ impact ] >> impact was cara's face on the windshield of the bus. >> i just killed somebody. >> reporter: cara suffered multiple face fractures and mild traumatic brain injury. doctors placed her in a medically-induced coma for 12 days. >> cara knows that she will never quite be the same. >> get the ambulance here! >> reporter: the ac transit board recently approved a $2.5 million settlement for cara because of both the crash and the bus driver's past problems. >> this bus driver almost from the day she started work there was a history of insubordination, of yelling at supervisors, on the few occasions yelling at vehicles on the roadway. >> reporter: and six weeks before cara's crash, her attorney says the driver had almost the same problem, taking a turn well above ac transit mandated speeds. the speed of the turn dumped a bus passenger out of her seat. >> a one-page letter in her file that had some medium role in the discipline process but

police say the bus collidedh a a developing story out of france where a tour bus crash has killed 43 people. police say the bus collided with a truck in the country's wine region then burst into flames. no word on the nationality of the tourists, only 8 people survived most with serious injuries. it's france's deadliest road crash in 30 years. after 11 hours of grilling on capitol hill, hillary clinton is back to the campaign. reporter craig boswell with the latest on that and the latest democrat to drop out. reporter: hillary clinton didn't show any signs of fatigue as she addressed the democratic party women's leadership forum. >> as some of you may know, i had a pretty long day yesterday. >> reporter: clinton spent 11 hours thursday being grilled die members of the house select committee investigating the

scratching all over but he doesn't have fleas our ticks. so what do you do about a dog that's scratching but there's no fleas or ticks? >> where they are scratching is important. so he mentioned the dog is scratching all over so fleas have to be high on my list. ticks don't cause scratching but fleaings absolutely do and, of course, if you live in the bay area that's the number one thing. so even though he is not see a flea it doesn't mean it's not fleas. they live in the environment. we have talked about this before but it bears repeating. they spend very little time on the pets. so not seeing fleas doesn't mean it's not fleas. >> okay. but let's say it's not fleas and the it's not ticks. >> right. so then other reasons for itching all over would be things like inhalent dermatitis where they are allergic to something they have inhaled only we sneeze and cough. they tend to itch. they often times though will itch more around the face and paws but it's on the list. and food allergies would be another one that i would be thinking about with itching all over. and then contact allergies. sometimes wool carpets are a problem. they lay on the wool carpet and it's new to the household and

all of a sudden they are itchy all over. >> do you treated them with an antihistamine? >> so they do have a small histamine reaction. we actually have more of a histamine reaction. so antihistamines work great for allergies. dogs have something called slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis that responds to steroids. when you bring your pet in we use steroids like prednisone to help with itchiness. >> but one way or another this is not a self diagnostic problem, you should see your vet? >> yes. just because when they do itch, they sometimes create microlesions on the skin that can be infected so sometimes they have to be on antibiotics, as well. >> this is quincy. >> he is five years old. he is a rescue dog. and very cute. right? a little nervous today but maybe next time he comes on he will be a little less nervous, a little dachsund, chihuahua -- > i don't know for sure. i would love to do dna testing to find out.
