good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in the third republican presidential debate, the candidates went after each other and the media. there were testy contentious exchanges as the candidates focused on the economy and those trailing in the polls, like jeb bush, marco rubio, and ted cruz tried to make their mark. craig boswell has more from boulder, colorado. >> reporter: standing next to one another, jeb bush and marco rubio had one of the most heated exchanges, both under pressure for strong debate performances. overall, the candidate in the center of the stage was quiet for a long stretch of time. the two top polling candidates, washington outsiders ben carson and donald trump, left much of the early contentious debating to the eight other competitors on stage. john kasich questioned their ability. >> folks, we have to wake up. we cannot elect somebody that doesn't know how to do the job.

>> reporter: jeb bush, who has had to cut spending and reorganize his campaign structure went after marco rubio for missing votes in senate. >> when you signed up for this, this was a six-year term and you should be showing up to work. >> someone convinced me that attacking me is going to help you. >> reporter: senator ted cruz criticized the debate moderators. >> the questions that are being asked shouldn't be trying to get people to tear into each other. >> i want the record to conflict i asked you about the debt limit and i got no answer. >> reporter: he spoke out against superpacs and against his record. >> i never filed for bankruptcy. i used the laws of the country to my benefit. i'm sorry. >> reporter: donald trump came to cameras insisting his campaign is not losing steam and now in second place in the latest cbs news/"the new york times" poll. >> as you probably noticed, there is not even a contest in terms of who is number one if you add up the numbers. >> reporter: front-runner carson maintained his signature low profile, but was asked to clarify his vague tax policy. >> the rate is going to be much closer to 15%.

>> 15% still leaves you with a 1.1 million dollar hole. >> you also have to get rid of all the deductions and the loopholes. >> reporter: afterwards, carson was coy about maintaining his campaign's momentum. >> you know what i always say? when i was a surgeon, i would say to people, why guess when soon you'll know? >> reporter: the future of social security prompted agreement from candidates on the opposite ends of the stage. >> yes, we have lied to the american people with social security. >> tell people the truth. for once let's do that and stop trying to give them -- >> reporter: voters can weigh in on what they have heard in less than 100 days. carly fiorina who needed a strong debate performance to boost her poll numbers once again said she could pare down her tax plan to just three pages. craig boswell, cbs news, boulder, colorado. meanwhile, cnbc is coming under fire for its handling of the debate. don champion is in new york with that and more.

>> reporter: the candidates were criticizing the moderators. the criticism started during the two-hour debate and continued when it ended. in this rooms, some were plaining the questions were hostile and based on false pretenses. ted cruz should the squarest shot at the moderators early on and some of the others followed. >> this is not a cage match. and you look at the question. donald trump, are you a comic book villain? ben carson, can you do math? john kasich, will you insult two people over here? marco rubio, why don't you resign? jeb bush, why have your numbers fallen? how about talking about the substantive issues people care about? >> what should we do? >> what we should do is be investing in all types of energy, john. all types of energy. >> in government? >> no, john. you want me to answer or do you want to answer? because -- because i got to tell you the truth. even in new jersey, what you're doing is called rude. >> in control of the debate, plain and simple. it was not a fair debate in that

regard. >> reporter: tough words there. when it was all over, republican party chairman reince priebus sent out a series of tweets blasting cnbc's handling of the debate and praising the candidates. a spokesperson for nbc did release a one sentence statement reading -- people who want to be president of t united states should be able to answer tough questions. ted cruz's admonishment of the cnbc panel turned out to be the most talked about moment on social media of the debate. >> i guess that is good for him. don champion here in you know, thank you, don. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk about last night's debate with one of the participants, florida senator marco rubio. today, the house of representatives is expected to elect paul ryan as the new speaker. the republican caucus voted to nominate ryan yesterday. after the vote, ryan said we are not going to have a house that looks like it looks the last two years. ryan will replace john boehner

who was forced out by hard-core conservatives. the south carolina deputy who threw a disruptive student from her desk has been fired. deputy ben fields was working as a school resource officer when he was called to deal with a girl who refused to put away her cell phone. he tossed her out of her desk. the sheriff said the student needs to be held accountable, but that fields' actions were unacceptable. >> what she did doesn't justify what our deputy did. i don't want anybody to think that. it doesn't justify his actions. >> civil rights groups are applauding fields' swift dismissal. his lawyer says fields' actions were justified and lawful. investigators are trying to figure out how a blimp traveled 150 miles before coming down. the blimp escaped from maryland's aberdeen proofing ground and floated 3 1/2 miles

later and landed near muncy, pennsylvania. hena daniels is in muncy. >> reporter: police have set up a perimeter as they try to keep people away from this billion dollar military blimp. this, as the pentagon begins their own investigation on how this unmanned air ship managed to break free and float away. federal and state officials are in northeast pennsylvania, guarding the remnants of a massive army surveillance blimp that broke free and crash-landed wednesday afternoon. matt lepke was at a gas station in the area as the drama unfolded. >> it was like the white blimp of death. it was right over top of me and it looked like you could reach out and touch the blimp. it's going down! >> reporter: the unmanned aircraft attached from its mooring in aberdeen, maryland. f-16s, along with curious residents, chased the run away blimp down to its final resting place over a hundred miles away. >> nothing like this happens around here.

it's a rural area, so it's pretty awesome. >> reporter: thousands were left in the dark here in muncy as the blimp knocked down power lines along the way. officials say they are not out of the woods yet. >> it's a dangerous vehicle. it's still powered. >> reporter: authorities have set up a perimeter to keep people away and secure the blimp's state-of-the-art radar system. still in a test phase, the aircraft was designed to detect a missile attack. its tether was supposed to withstand hurricane force winds. officials will now try to figure out how it failed on what was an ordinary rainy day. pentagon officials have grounded a second test blimp until they figure out just what went wrong. >> hena daniels in muncy, thank you. millions in the east face another day of drenching rain. the system that brought heavy downpours will deliver more wet weather before pulling away. coastal south carolina faced more flooding wednesday. drivers navigated inundated streets in charleston as heavy rains combined with high tides.

volkswagen vehicles rigged to cheat the diesel emissions tests will pump out enough taxes to contribute to the premature death to 60 people in the united states alone. that is according to researchers at m.i.t. and harvard. volkswagen lost 2 million. stocks finished higher on wall street after the federal reserve board indicated it's considering raising interest rates in december. the fed wrapped up a two-day meeting yesterday. the dow gained nearly 200 points, s&p finished 24 points higher, and nasdaq jumped 65 points. two drugmakers are thinking about joining forces. it would be the biggest merger in the health care industry this year. pfizer and allergen are in the early stage of merger talks. pfizer is known for lipitor and viagra and allergen makes botox and it merged with activists earlier this year.

talks are in process to acquire starwood hotels and a deal would create one of the largest lodging chains in the world. it includes sheraton and westin and w hotels. starwood stocks soared for the second straight day on the news. the united nations aviation panel reportedly rejected a ban on the shipment of rechargeable batteries on passenger jets. billions of lithium ion batteries are used to power electronics like cell phones. tests show a small number of overheated batteries can explode in flight. the u.n. panel says international aviation standards. each country, though, can decide if they want to go along. now with halloween around the corner, which cities are best suited to survive a zombie apocalypse? the employment site career builder did a study on this. the top three cities able to deal with the hypothetical zombie outbreak are boston, salt lake city, and columbus, ohio.

"the tennesseean" reports on a dramatic confrontation in a fugitive manhunt. two people in custody after opening fire on wednesday at u.s. marshals north of nashville. police are looking for floyd ray cook who has been on the run since saturday. he allegedly shot and injured a tennessee officer, then fired at a kentucky trooper who tried to stop him. neither suspect is identified as cook.

"the honolulu star advertiser" reports a lesbian couple is accusing a police officer of arresting them because they kissed in a grocery store. the lawsuit by the vacationers claim back in march, the off-duty uniformed officer ordered them to, quote, take it somewhere else. but they ignored him. that allegedly led to a scuffle and the women were restrained. >> i just think that what he did was absolutely wrong, without a doubt. i really just want an example to be made. >> the kissing was recorded by a security camera, but the tapes are missing. the "los angeles times" reports scientists discovered significant amounts of oxygen on a comet. the european spacecraft rosetta found oxygen in a gas cloud on the comet 67p. scientists say the discovery could reshape our understanding of how the solar system formed. "usa today" says chris christie was not amused by a qestion at last night's debate about whether fantasy football sites should be regulated.
