florida. a plane is on fire! smoke poured out of a dynamic international airways jet at the fort lauderdale airport today. the engine caught fire as the plane prepared for take-off. it was headed to venezuela. passengers evacuated on the runway using emergency slides as crews doused the flames. 7 people are hurt. not clear how many people were on board. armed robbers are targeting parents in san leandro after taking their children to a rural high school. let's join kiet do at the site of the second robbery in the washington manor neighborhood with the very latest. kiet. >> reporter: good afternoon, san leandro police say they were wearing masks and hoodies and these robberies were planned and executed and not amateur. tomas castillo had just dropped off his son at arroyo high school and hadn't been home for more than a few seconds when a man came up from behind and

pointed a gun at the back of his head. tomas instinctively grabbed the barrel. >> i grabbed the gun and then these two guys, don't do any foolish things. turn around. [ indiscernible ] put the gun on my head the back of my head. >> reporter: facing three armed men, tomas had no choice but to give up. the men walked into the sliding glass door in the back. the crooks saw and heard his wife calling 911, they took his wallet and ran. whatever happened tomas was not going to open that door. you were ready to die before you would let them inside the house? >> in my mind is just go ahead shoot me. i don't want to get them inside because as soon as they get inside, that's big problems. i got my two daughters and my wife inside. what can we do? >> reporter: this is the second time this month it's happened where parents are attacked after dropping their children off at arroyo high school. in both cases the victims were asian men and the crooks entered the houses through the side gate.

detectives are looking for a getaway car similar to this blue nissan rogue. >> one possibility is they are surveilling prior to the crimes or have some sort of information knowing that's fathers will return home after dropping the children at school. >> reporter: i see you patting your pocket. is that what i think it is? he used to keep his gun in his bedroom. now it's on him all the time. >> i want to survive. you want to shoot it out, let's go. your bullet. >> reporter: san leandro police have increased patrols with both marked and undercover units and they are pleading with the public if you know anything or you see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to give them a calm. we're live in san leandro, kiet do, kpix 5. today, three drifters accused in two bay area murders were back in court. sean angold, morrison lampley and lila alligood could get life without parole if convicted. authorities say they killed a backpacker in golden gate park and a yoga teacher in fairfax this month.

today's hearing was to appoint lawyers for two suspects. today the teenager suspected of killing 8-year-old maddie middleton was in court in santa cruz. 15-year-old adrian gonzalez had a preliminary hearing. he is being tried as an adult on murder charges. he pleaded not guilty. he is accused of tying up middleton, raping and strangling her and then dumping her body in a recycling bin back in you will. >> after a nearly three-month investigation, the city of rohnert park says the police officer acted reasonably in pulling a gun in an incident that went viral. >> this one really got a gun. you don't touch me. you don't touch me. >> officer dave rodriguez walked towards don mccomas and asked him to take his hands out of his pockets. when he refuse he draws his gunpointsing it down. yesterday the city said rodriguez saw suspicious behavior including mccomas

ducking behind a truck. a man tried to turn himself in for killing a woman but he was turned away. on monday hugo castro came to the county jail and a staffer called a correctional deputy. castro said he knew the location of a body. the deputy told castro to go around the corner to police headquarters. and castro followed those instructions on his own. police say they would have handled it differently. >> we would find out what this person is talking about, detain that person, notify the investigative unit if it's within our jurisdiction. then we would handle the follow- up investigation. >> police later arrested castro for the murder of his ex- girlfriend alessandra barlas. he led officers to the globe condo building on 3rd street downtown where her body was found strangled with stab wounds. some dramatic new video just released from a deadly biker shootout in texas back in may. a warning, it is graphic. surveillance video from inside the twin peaks restaurant shows all the chaos that unfolded

to relocate to l.a. tonight's meeting begins at 7 p.m. it will be held at the paramount theater. new at noon, san francisco mayor ed lee is launching an initiative to not just reduce but to eliminate hiv/aids in the city. today he announced funding and a plan to get to zero. the goal is to reach zero new hiv infections and eliminate deaths from aids eventually. the health department is teaming up with multiple organization and foundations. >> we want to have zero infections and deaths. we certainly want to have zero stigma, perhaps earlier than 2030. and the declaration just demonstrates our commitment to doing so and we're glad to do it. but we're also going to back it up with serious money. >> the city will contribute $1.2 million this year to the effort. well, it's official. the next speaker of the house is wisconsin congressman paul ryan. today's vote marking the end of john boehner's 25 years in the

security into the trees in the ravine. >> the cable tether that anchored the blimp is an inch thick and designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. it could take up a week to recover it. it is considered the biggest trial yet for a balloon powered internet system. mountain view-based alphabet that's the parent company of google says it will launch project loon next year over indonesia. they are considered an alternate way to offer internet service to the country. instead of stringing miles over 750,000 square miles, indonesia's three biggest mobile network operators will partner with alphabet on the new project. a lot of people are now blaming their iphones for making them late and with good reason. apple's newest software update is causing people to oversleep. it has to do with the new overnight update feature which asks if you want to install the latest operating system while you sleep. if you say yes, after the install is complete, the phone restarts and switches off any set alarms.

costa families well, today's tip of the day is going to be is with portobello mushrooms. texture is out of this world. the flavor delicious. but selection and storage is very important when you buy them, remember they should have a nice light brown color all the way around. very important. and nice and thick. when you bring them home, simply store them in the refrigerator right away. now, if you have a chance, ask the produce manager for a brown paper bag because a brown paper bag all the mushrooms in the refrigerator will last longer. in plastic they will decay faster. now, i put these in the broiler with olive oil and salt and pepper, for about 3 to 4 minutes. and at the end, i make a nice sandwich with some bread, roasted red peppers an mozzarella and that's it. it's beautiful. i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy.
