fuel. your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. right now part of a major east bay freeway has been shut down after a big rig crashes and starts leaking fuel. hi, everyone. good afternoon. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. all lanes of southbound 680 on the sunol grade have been shut

down after a big rig crashed and started leaking fuel around 9 a.m. south of andrade road. here's the view from chopper 5. the semi truck hit a tow truck and that was stopped in the slow lane of the freeway. it leaked ethanol fuel. fire crews surrounded the tank trailer with water hoses as a precaution. hazmat is on the way. southbound 680 crept past in the far left lanes. at one point the backup was almost to pleasanton. about an hour after the crash, the california highway patrol closed all southbound lanes of the freeway and diverted traffic off at highway 84 from chopper 5. you can see the closure caused a major backup there, as well. just got an update from the chp and they say they don't expect to have southbound lanes open until at least 3 p.m. new at noon a pedestrian

has been killed crossing a busy intersection in milpitas. the man in his 20s hit on north milpitas road about 5:45 a.m. the driver of the suv that hit him stayed at the scene. a ac transit bus also stayed to provide investigators footage from its on board camera. the road reopened an hour ago. and one person was taken to the hospital after an early- morning shooting in san pablo. police say a man was wounded driving on karen road just before 5 a.m. his condition is unknown. the shooter is still on the loose. a warning to uc-berkeley students this halloween weekend. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live on the campus where at least one person was drugged at a fraternity. >> reporter: it's going to be a big weekend here at the cal campus. a football game, halloween celebrations are planned. the police want to send out a warning to anybody who is ready to party. >> there are people out there that will put drugs in your drinks and try and drug you.

>> reporter: the uc police department got an anonymous report this week that one or possibly more students may have been drugged at a fraternity. >> you have to watch out. >> reporter: most students hadn't gotten the warning yet. >> i didn't get the memo. >> reporter: there was a similar report last year and an anonymous letter sent to the campus police saying a woman was drugged and sexual assaulted by a fraternity member at a halloween party. common symptoms of the so- called date rape drug, dizziness, memory loss, having trouble moving and acting disproportionately intoxicated relative to the amount of alcohol consumed. >> a lot of times the drugs don't stay in the system long enough to do a actual analysis. >> reporter: the best advice? watch your drink. >> guys will get you a drink at a party and you have to not -- if you didn't see them pour it you don't do it. >> reporter: some reminders from cal. police say they have a system on campus where anybody who has had too much to drink can get a

free ride home. the other part of their advice, watch out for your friends. live at cal berkeley, anne makevoc, kpix 5. palo alto fire investigators still searching for the source of fumes that forced the evacuation of a hotel. a dozen guests sickened about 9 p.m. last night on the westin on el camino real. they went to the hospital complaining of respiratory trouble. part of the hotel was evacuated. >> we did evacuate the garage and the first floor. we told everyone on the second floor and above to "shelter in place." we turned off the air system so any chemical wouldn't circulate in the hotel. >> investigators believe the odor originated in the underground garage but has dissipated since. the family of a bay area man missing in london is fearing the worst. police looking into the disappearance of 24-year-old josh sanchez-maldonado say they found a body near train tracks yesterday. he had worked as a financial trader in san francisco and was in london for an interview.

investigators have not publicly identified the victim, but the family of sanchez-maldonado has been informed it may be him. in bay area headlines, san francisco's last remaining gun store is closing for good today. high bridge arms has been open for more than 60 years. he is closing because of the city's tough new gun regulations that now require videotaping all gun and ammunition purchases. the search for the source of that shigella outbreak in the south bay has led to a dead end. the santa clara health department says only one employee at marisco's san juan number 3 restaurant tested positive for the bacteria but it appears he got it from the food, as well. nearly 200 people got sick after eating at the restaurant or coming in contact with people who did. the restaurant is closed. how far would you go to get a guaranteed parking spot in san francisco? the city is now taking action against a homeowner who went too far. the man tried to make his own spot by illegally digging out

part of a hillside next to his home on juiced avenue. they are worry it will trigger a mud slide when el nino hits. at the white house, president obama has ordered the deployment of u.s. troops on the ground with local forces. reporter craig boswell on the role the special commandos will play in syria. >> reporter: u.s. troops will soon be on the ground in syria. less than 50 members of u.s. special forces will deploy to northern syria to help coordinate the fight against isis. >> they don't have a combat mission. they have a training, advising and assist mission. >> reporter: the soldiers are expected to assess the situation on the ground and determine which group the u.s. can best partner with to fight isis. white house officials are trying to down play the new orders insisting this is not a shift in policy. >> this is an intensification of a strategy that the president announced more than a year ago. the core of our military strategy in syria is to build up the capacity of local forces to take the fight to isil on the ground in their own country. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of

y. the pilot of the developing news in florida where the ntsb has arrived to find out why jetliner -- why a jetliner caught fire yesterday. the pilot of the dynamic airways 767 radioed something was leaking from the left engine. seconds later, it burst into flames and passengers began evacuating down emergency chutes. 21 people were injured. two are still hospitalized. the faa says there have been no past problems with the 29-year- old plane. damage to the ft. lauderdale-hollywood airport runway is still being repaired. a state report released today find the california population has cut back on water use by more than 26%. nearly all water suppliers have met the 25% mandate for four

sunday. first up high pressure huge dome. this area of low pressure has to erode the ridge of high pressure. it's going to spill cooler air into the bay area, as well. we see the return of fog tomorrow morning along the san mateo coast. a little hint of some fog for trick or treaters along the coast and the bay. clear skies inland. the clouds increase. we have a splash of some rain in the far reaches of the north bay. me to front wants to move in at 9 p.m. and so -- the front wants to move in at 9 p.m. and so no rain at the raiders game. 84 in sacramento, currently 46 going up to 62 in the truckee area. it's got a long way to go. clear skies tomorrow morning. right now clear and 72 degrees.
