good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. ney. . cooler temperatures arriving in the bay area and badly needed rain. good evening to you. what began as a gentle shower turned into a downpour in vacaville this afternoon. and if the climate models are right, we'll see a lot more of this before the season is over. it's all beginning tonight. a robust cold front will finally plunge south into the bay area, mostly after midnight tonight. rain will begin in the north bay, spreading from north to south overnight. within 24 hours, totals will range from a tenth to half an inch of rain and gusty northwesterlies behind the front will blow up to 30 miles an hour. and the rain will turn to snow in the sierra. that's why winter storm warnings are up for a foot of snow above 7000 feet. that means it could be slow going if you're headed that way tonight and tomorrow morning. the rain's already falling in the sierra, turning into snow in the morning. lamar abrams is in placer county

it is. get ready for more tonight and overnight. in auburn, kpix 5. >> and brian will have more on our forecast in a minute. in the east bay tonight, the only teen to survive a crash that killed two of her friends tells investigators she fell asleep at the wheel. the car slammed into a tree this morning near highway 4 and franklin cannon road in martinez. maria medina has more. >> reporter: investigators are not confirming the identities of the victims, but friends and family are. they are gathered at this church tonight to remember them. >> they didn't stand a chance. >> reporter: these are the first pictures we're seeing of one of the victims. a family member identified her as marlena heinz, one of two martinez teens killed in this morning's crash. >> the way the car struck the tree, it really was a severe impact to the passenger's side of the vehicle. >> reporter: investigators say the teen driver told them she fell asleep at the wheel as she

rounded this bend on franklin canyon road around 3:00 this morning. >> the last thing she remembers was being at 60 miles per hour. >> reporter: friends of the girls visited the crash site hours later, paying their respects and identifying the other teen as lauren smith. >> i texted her last night, telling her to come to this hangout around 12:00. that was a few hours before it happened. >> reporter: vincent la grosso says the deaths are a shock to everyone who knew the girls. >> lauren was just nice, you know, really considerate. >> reporter: and the driver, the sole survivor, is still in the hospital tonight. investigators say she survived because of her air bag and her seat belt. live in pleasant hill, kpix 5. rioting erupted near cal campus overnight after a big halloween street party got out of control. mark kelly has the aftermath. halloween night along berkeley's frat row, and the

partying spilled into the streets. >> some of them are climbing on cars, some dressed in costumes, kind of riling people up. >> reporter: in fact, this morning we found one of those cars, a lexus took quite a beating. >> some aspects of a riot, definitely. >> reporter: around 12:30 this morning, police arrived after a fight, a gun and people carrying knives. of course, berkeley's no stranger to riots, but police say this was different. >> this is a unique one in the fact that it was not in a commercial district. it was in a residential area. and it was largely -- it was students, party goers. >> reporter: ask students and they say the party in the streets started off innocent enough. they blamed the out-of-towners for taking their halloween celebration hostage. >> honestly, lot of the people weren't even cal students. they were kids from oakland and stuff who had no affiliation with the school. >> there's a lot of people. i don't think all were students either. >> reporter: police made three arrests and would not say if

they were cal students. one person was taken to the hospital. mark kelly, kpix 5. police shut down several halloween frat parties late last night pretty much at the same time. that might be why so many revelers ended up on the streets at once. tonight, we're learning a fire that left a danville home in ruins may have been deliberately set. witnesses told police they saw someone throw an object at the house on west linda mesa avenue just before it erupted in flames. that person then took off in a car. the house was vacant and no one was hurt, but the fire caused an estimated $210,000 in damage. so far, no arrests. a wind power company blamed for thousands of bird deaths in the altamonte pass is shutting down. altamonte wind stopped running its older generation turbines today. the company is one of four operating some 3000 of them in the pass. environmentalists blame the older models for killing up to

4600 birds over the years. >> the older turbines are much more dangerous than the newer turbines because of the way they are situated on the landscape. first of all, you have 828 turbines all spinning blades simultaneously across the landscape. it's really a shame for wildlife. >> the shutdown came as a surprise to environmentalists. altamonte wind recently got an extension from the county to operate until 2018. the company says reducing bird deaths was the primary reason for its decision to shut down those turbines. what began with two men will evolve into two $50 billion companies tomorrow. hewlett-packard decided last year to split into two smaller companies to become more competitive. hp, inc. will sell personal computers and printers, while hewlett- packard enterprise will focus on commercial business. starting tomorrow, each will trade separately on the new york stock exchange. by dividing hp into roughly

equal halves, each spinoff should produce more than $50 billion in sales next year, according to analysts. open enrollment begins today for cover california. it's a chance for americans to sign up again for federal health insurance under the affordable care act. people did just that today at a health fair in san francisco. more than 20 agents were on hand to help people get the coverage they need. >> what makes cover california successful is if we have everybody sign up for insurance, it actually changes the risk pool and will reduce the cost for californians too. >> if you need insurance, you have until january 31 to sign up. if you want it to take effect by the first of the year, you'll need to enroll by december 15. people who choose to go without could face fines. well, will they stay or will they go? the raiders had another great day at home and if the city gets its way, there may be many more to come. why the team may be forced to stay in oakland. >> plus, the big votes coming up this week that could make or

commission in san francisco will review improvement to the transportation fund. the plan calls for a light rail boarding platform and calls for the creation of two parking lots on port of san francisco property. the warriors hope to break ground as early as next year. >> we're going to do it as quickly as the process allows. we haven't skipped any steps. we haven't announced any plans to be in the ground next year, but we're still on track and we'll get this done as soon as we can. >> san francisco voters will also decide this week whether to approve the giants' big expansion plans. the team wants to build a whole new neighborhood near the baseball stadium, filled with parks, affordable housing, and high-rises. but to do that, voters will have to approve prop d, which would raise building height limits in the area. still to come, a bit of a

. a little bit of a halloween scare in san ramon, courtesy of the calaveras fault. a pair of earthquakes struck late last night. first, a 3.0, then 6 minutes later, a 3.1. they are among hundreds of small quakes to hit the san ramon area in the past three weeks. well, we are less than 100 days away from super bowl 50. in the meantime, the bay area's eight lombardi trophies are busy making the rounds.

the 50 tour was in vacaville today. the 49ers' five trophies were on display, alongside the three belonging to the raiders. there were also fun activities for the team's youngest fans. the 50 tour will be making stops all around the bay area, leading up to super bowl 50. yes, the big game kicks off at levi's stadium in just 97 days. you can catch the game right here on kpix 5. and we've got the latest on the kpix high-def doppler, which is picking up light showers moving into the north bay. this would be something that would be the most garden variety, ordinary rain event if it happened in the middle of winter, wouldn't be remarking on it. because it's at the cusp of what could be a big season in the bay area, we're going to tell you all about it. a system that now is sinking south into northern california, you can see much of the action just north of much of the bay area. santa rosa is reporting light rain. some of this is low-level rainfall. there's drizzle outside right now in much of marin county and the golden gate and also in san

francisco. radar doesn't pick that up. the heavier stuff falls overnight tonight, mostly after midnight. looking live toward the hazy bay bridge in the distance, still mild out there. concord, 68 degrees. oakland, 65. livermore, 67. san jose, 66. all of the cities that you see on the screen right now will struggle to reach temperatures this warm tomorrow afternoon. forecast highs, mostly in the low to mid-60s. here's what's happening. fairly cold core of low pressure is moving south over northern california. winds behind the front will kick up to 30 miles an hour out of the northwest by tomorrow night. it will be showery, cooler tomorrow, and it will begin to clear as the day wears on. it will be clear, but distinctly cooler tomorrow. yet we'll turn it all around and warm things up a little bit on tuesday. then more robustly as we get into wednesday, thursday and friday. shoreline remains mild. warm inland. again, this is after tomorrow when we get the chance of rain moving in. and the future cast draws a better bead on when the rain is going to be pushing through the

bay area. by 6:00 tomorrow morning, the brunt of the front will be south to monterey peninsula through morgan hill and out toward the anderson reservoir. for us, we'll begin to clear it out just in time for the morning commute, but there will be slick streets. then we go showery the rest of the day and we get a peek of sun toward sunset tomorrow night. so in a way, it's a convenient system because the heaviest rain falls overnight. but that's not true for the mountains. snow in the sierra will get there tomorrow morning. snow level above 5000 feet. 4 to 12 inches of powder above 5000 feet. cameras lost in fog. that's what that is. cold, windy and wet early monday, clearing on tuesday, then dry for the rest of the week. you will not escape this by heading out. they are still expecting showers from redding down to fresno tomorrow. in the extended forecast, after rain tomorrow, we'll begin to clear it all out and warm it up so that we'll be back into the
