your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. we begin with breaking news this afternoon. two boys are fighting for their lives after they were hit walking to school. the scene still active as investigators comb the area. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. the two boys hit were both rushed to the hospital. kpix 5's emily turner is live in the marina district with the

very latest. emily, what can you tell us? >> reporter: it's a parent's nightmare. those two 12-year-old boys with life-threatening injuries. they were hit in the shady crosswalk here this first one and thrown into the second crosswalk right there in the sun. it happened about 8:30 this morning. these boys were on their way to marina middle school when a young woman hit them. again, these boys were in the crosswalk so they were doing the right thing. the woman, though, who hit them is cooperating with police. as far as charges are concerned, well, it's the speed and whether or not she was using a phone, that's part of the investigation and she is being interviewed. this is a 25-mile-an-hour speed zone though because there's several schools in the area. and neighbors say speeding has been a problem here as well as drivers who are distracted not paying attention. >> i'm not surprised. there's a lot of high speeding on this street. it's a street when we get on it ourself that we always use our flashers and use caution.

and as we can see now, that's the reason why we use caution. >> reporter: police are aware of a problem with speeding in the area and they are determining whether it's part of this accident. of course we'll have more on this story and bring you the latest as far as these boys and their health is concerned a little later tonight. we'll be sure to get that to you as soon as possible. emily turner, kpix 5. developing news. a stabbing at uc-merced injuries several students. the campus is 150 miles from the bay area. authorities say the suspect stabbed five people on campus before police shot and killed him. two of the victims were rushed to the hospital. the other three were treated on scene. school officials have canceled classes for the day and students are asked to stay away. investigators are still looking into the reason for the stabbing. voters in san francisco sent a message on several issues facing the city yesterday. prop f a measure to limit short-

term rental lost by 55%. "airbnb" funneled millions of dollars to defeat this measure. former deputy sheriff vicki hennesy ousting ross mirkarimi with 61% of the vote. mirkarimi's term was plagued with scandal paving the way for hennessy's victory. and aaron peskin is back on the board of supervisors defeating incumbent julie christiansen. his victory could tip the balance of power at city hall giving progressives the majority. now what message did the votessers send? phil matier is here to break it down and what was a big day in san francisco. >> reporter: it was. and let's get personal real quick. the big message was to ross mirkarimi, the sheriff in one term a former supervisor just didn't measure up with voters. two out of one said no dice. you're going to be replaced. now, ross mirkarimi has had personal and professional scandal but for a while he had been seen as a threat to mayor ed lee. that's not in the cards. on the housing front hot button

issue in the entire bay area. how to keep the place affordable. well, a couple of measures. may lee's $310 million bond to build more affordable housing, 7 out of 10 voters said yes reaching into their own pockets to say we are willing to pay tax to build more affordable housing. "airbnb" for short-term rentals to make your mortgage that looks like voters said yes to that saying let's keep the controls loose but that fight may not be over. and speaking of fights, the big return of former board of supervisors president aaron peskin. i can't remember last time somebody actually tried to get back on the board of supervisors. but aaron is one of a kind. he has been a thorn in the side of past mayors newson and brown. he is smart. he is one of the reasons why the warriors had to move their arena from the waterfront down to mission bay. and now he is going in with mayor ed lee. i caught up with the mayor and asked him what he thought of aaron's return to city hall. >> i will probably call him

this afternoon and congratulate him and, um, as you know, i -- i will work with of member of the board of supervisors -- with every member of the board of supervisors because that's how we get things done. >> reporter: it's going to be an interesting meeting to say the least because these two have not gotten along. the mayor and his friends spent a lot of money and the attacks were personal against mr. peskin. and now he reclaims his seat and probably his office. >> did mr. lee run against anybody? >> against himself and it was an interesting twist. mayor lee was basically run unopposed except for a series of one shot candidates that were just out there to say hi, how about me? and 45% of the voters in the first round said yeah, anybody but mayor lee. so he has his work cut out, as well. >> airbnb may be the biggest winner because if they had to duplicate this in a bunch of cities -- >> i don't know if they are a winner yet. they spent over $8 million to try to defeat this measure. if you had to duplicate that like you said in other cities it would kill their bottom line. but they only won by 10 points so in san francisco that's

usually grounds for a rematch. >> it might happen again. >> bet on it. >> of course. all right. phil matier, thank you for that. and, of course, for all the election results, go to cbssf.com. click on the campaign 2015 link at the top of the homepage. it's a staple on many thanksgiving dinner tables but now state official could put the dungeness crab season on hold. kpix 5's kiet do on what this means for bay area consumers. >> reporter: seafood loves, fishermen and restaurants in the bay area could soon be hurting because of the tookic bloom. some of the samples were taken in half moon bay and with the season starting in a couple of days, it does not look good. take a look at this map that shows you just how far this territory extends. according to the california department of health, they say the crabs have tested positive for domoic acid from oregon to the southern border of santa barbara county. if you eat them, you might regret it. domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin related to the

bloom of a plant called pseudo- nitzschia. it cause vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and headaches for days. on the severe side it could kill you! marine experts have no idea what caused it and when it might go away. as a result, the state is recommending the delay of the crabbing season and that the rock crab fishery be closed. this is devastating news for crabbers who come in from all over to make half their income for the year. >> the public should know at this point not to panic. but commercial season opens november 15. california fish and wildlife and the fda and the state health are all on this. so they are going to be monitoring to make sure that everything comes back into safety levels. >> reporter: the fish & game department is holding an emergency meeting this thursday evening at 8 a.m. in sacramento to decide what to do next. in half moon bay, kiet do, kpix 5. police in santa cruz are looking into whether fake xanax is responsible for the overdose death of two men. in the first case, two men were rushed to the hospital after

they took what was believed to be xanax at a party on october 24. one of the men later died. last week, a 29-year-old man was found dead in his home. he is also believed to have taken the fake pill. starting friday only mass transit taxi and commercial vehicles will be allowed on san francisco's busy powell street all part of an 18 month pilot program approved by the city's transportation agency. the goal here is to make the area safer for pedestrians. the sfmta plans to make the changes permanent by 2018 if the changes prove effective. today the votes are in for faculty at california state university. the results say they are ready to strike if salary negotiations fail. instructors cast ballots on the issue in late october. their union is seeking salary increases of 5%. the school is offering 2%. negotiations have been going on for about 6 months. a key meeting tonight on the future of police body

cameras in san francisco. commissioners are tackling the question of whether officers should be allowed to look at videos of incidents in which they are accused of misconduct. skeptics say that may compromise investigations. but police say if they can't review the footage, they can be trapped into making statements that don't perfectly match the images. in about an hour from now aldon smith is expected to be in court accused of hit-and- run, drunk driving and vandalism. the allegations caused him to be cut from the 49ers in august. it is the fifth time he has been arrested since entering th nfl. he pled not guilty to all the charges. an implosion of the large section of the old bay bridge is postponed because of safety concerns. it has been planned for this saturday. but caltrans now says certain aspects of the project did not meet its specifications. the goal is to bring down pier e3 using a series of under water charges to break away the concrete that supports the old

structure. >> it would have taken over four years to build a covered dam and removed this pier just with mechanical means. instead, we are doing this in about six months. >> caltrans says its plan is the best way to protect the environment. the new date for the implosion is either november 14 or 15. following campaign 2016, republican presidential candidate donald trump officially filed paperwork to be on the ballot for new hampshire's presidential primary. presidential candidates have until november 20 to submit paperwork to be on the ballot in the granite state. in other campaign news, a new national poll shows trump and ben carson are neck and neck in the republican primary. the quinnipiac university survey finds that trump has 24% support and carson is inching up at 23%. polls show him tied with hillary clinton. the "wall street journal" survey shows ben carson and

investigators said today... of his startling revelations in the shooting death of an illinois police officer. investigators said today the officer took his own life. his death sparked a massive manhunt and national outrage. at first authorities believed that fox lake police lieutenant joseph gliniewicz was gunned down while chasing three suspects on foot but he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> we have determined this suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that gliniewicz had been committing. >> investigators say he stole thousands of dollars from a youth explorer program over the course of several years. gliniewicz, who was just months from retirement, left behind a

wife and four sons. the investigation is ongoing. honda will no longer use airbag inflaters from the japanese-based supplier takata. they say takata misrepresented and manipulated test data for certain inflaters that have been blamed for at least 8 deaths and almost 100 injuries. takata faces a $70 million penalty for failing to disclose the defects. scientists have long thought that melting ice in antarctica was causing sea levels around the world to rise. but a new study by nasa says that may not be the case. researchers found that more ice is being gained along eastern antarctica than is being lost on the western side. experts say this could mean something else is contributing to the rise of sea levels. only november 4 but ski and snowboard season under way today in the tahoe/truckee area. today's early start all thanks to monday's big storm, which brought a foot or more to parts of the sierra. snowmaking at boreal mountain resort near donner summit. it plans to open up on friday for skiers. but mount rose ski area between incline village and rio opened this morning just enough for one trail with lift tickets for $10. people got to wax up boards and head off to enjoy. >> you're a skier, roberta. >> yes, i am, a skier. i like to go on the little bunny hills. some people are driving up just to look at the snow. it's so peaceful. here locally what everybody is feeling the effects of and reporting in our weather watchers everybody suggests that it is a bit breezy to windy side. temperatures in the 60s. anywhere from 8 to 14 miles per hour from antioch through the los altos area. around our microclimates i have been taking a look at some of these conditions. and at this time, we are reporting winds blowing out of the north and northwest up to a good 14 miles per hour in some locations. take a look at sfo at 18 miles

per hour. san ramon at 14. some gusty winds in the napa area. in fact, because of those winds, it did not get as cold this morning as yesterday morning when we dipped down into the 30s. all numbers bottomed out in the 40s and 50s. bird's-eye view this is our live weather camera looking towards the golden gate bridge. wind-swept blue skies, visibility is unlimit at this hour. our temperatures are in the 60s. visibility is unlimited at this hour. this is university of california at berkeley, another view from sausalito looking at the skyline of san francisco, pristine conditions. a bit misleading because we do have the breezy to windy conditions. winds continue to blow out of the north 10 to 20 miles per hour and occasional gusts to 35 miles per hour. that will add a chill into the air. our temperatures today are slightly below average and we do have a chance of rain returning by monday. cool air mass stuck in place with the departure of the area of low pressure. this is the ridge of high pressure trying to build in. it's producing that northerly flow. and ushering in the cooler temperatures as well as the

gusty winds. i find this interesting. it's our futurecast. it illustrates by tomorrow morning's commute we'll see increasing clouds from the north all from a very weak disturbance to the north of the bay area. so we'll allude to it or call it partly sunny tomorrow. temperatures in the 60s. it's currently in the 50s with a northwest wind at 18 in sacramento going up to 65. temperatures are now 30 to 33 degrees in the greater lake tahoe area and that's as good as it gets with a snow shower or two. 5:09 the sun goes down and tonight's numbers bottoming out in the upper 30s to low 50s after realizing highs in the 60s everywhere. the extended forecast partly sunny skies on thursday. slightly warmer over the weekend and then we have that chance, chance of rain on monday in which we're keeping our fingers crossed. >> you're going to feel the difference when you walk outside. a little breezy. >> okay. thank you. we are following some breaking news right now in southern california. flights are not being allowed to land at san diego international airport because of an active shooter at a

chipotle. 43 restaurants in health experts say they are close to finding the source of the source of e. coli outbreak at chipotle. many restaurants are shut down and 12 people went to the hospital. they don't believe it came from a meat product. they now think lettuce or cilantro may be responsible. i love these. brussels sprouts. but they often get a bad rap. >> they do. i need to work on these. but, um, they are perfect this time of year, i'm told. here's tony with today's fresh grocer tip. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be with brussels sprouts. this time of year for thanksgiving they are very popular. they are great and delicious. you love them or hate them. i'll give you a tip. you will love them. now, hope so. first of all, talk about selection. when you buy them, make sure they are nice and green all the way around.

these bigger brussels sprouts you really want to make sure the outer leaves are nice and tight not like flowers. that means they have been around for too long and heavy for their size and they have to feel nice and fresh with no yellowing. in the refrigerator right away at home. now, what i like to do is simply par boil them for a little while and a cold bath. when you boil them, have some celery to absorb the odor. then i just either put them in the oven under the broiler with olive oil and salt and pepper and serve or saute with olive oil and salt and pepper just give it a little bit more flavor to it. you will love it [ brussels sprouts for thanksgiving, try that recipe. and i'm tony tantillo, and always automakers. in today's jobs report, jill schlesinger has a look at positions with a big jump in pay. reporter: while annual wage gains have been hovering at two to 2.2% overall during the recovery that's not the case for every american. there are a number of workers who are enjoying significant pay increases according to a new study from employment site

glassdoor.com. it crunched the numbers and identified 20 jobs that have seen salary growth of 3 to 10% over the past year and in addition to jobs that start from a low base like barista or security officer, one position that's seeing a big rise in pay is sales consultant. corporations hire these skilled professionals to both sell products and services or train others. many sales consultants focus on business to business, where the end user is buying a more expensive item or service. that's why their compensation is about twice as big as those in retail sales. total pay for sales consultants rose to over $49,000 this year, a 7% jump from 2014. requirements for sales consultants vary depending on the field, although most are college educated. i'm jill schlesinger for kpix 5. ,,,,,,,,,,
