francisco: a column of thick, black toxic smoke -- flames . a rude awakening for some people sleeping in san francisco. a column of thick, black toxic smoke, as flames tear through a tire shop. tonight, nearly two dozen people are not allowed in their homes. good evening. i'm juliet goodrich. >> and i'm brian hackney. the picture from a viewer gives us a better idea how big the fire was. the thick black smoke could be seen from miles away. people from as far north asthma written county could see it. it started the the rolling stock tire shop at 16th and shotwell in the heart of the mission district. this is a live look at what's left of the tire shop. firefighters are still out there and plan on spending the night to keep a close eye on

everything to make sure nothing flares up. mark kelly says the fire department threw everything it had at this fire. >> reporter: 110 firefighters battled this fire about two hours this morning. >> upon arrival, we had a heavy amount of fire and smoke. >> reporter: inside, tires and auto parts melted. chopper 5 shows where the roof at the rolling stock auto shop collapsed. too dangerous to go inside, firefighters had to battle the flames from outside the building. >> structural integrity of the building, we won't make entry into the building. we're trying to hit it from the best spots we can. >> reporter: the owner and workers from the shop, too shaken to talk on camera, but this man did, telling us his office next door to the tire shop got hit with smoke damage. >> yeah, well, they told me part of it is -- there's been some damage. >> any idea how bad? >> i'm waiting to get in there. >> reporter: an apartment building next door also hit hard from the fast-moving

flames. foxy lynnsmeyer was awoken during the fire. >> they said ma'am, you got to get up, there's a fire in the building. >> reporter: she threw her valuables in this trunk and headed for the exit, no idea when she would be allowed back inside. >> you're never ready for it to happen. >> reporter: this afternoon, the building inspector red tagged the building, which means the folks living there won't be going home any time soon. mark kelly, kpix 5. >> firefighters will be in the area keeping an eye on things all night. the shop was closed when the fire broke out, so no one was injured. streets in the area are expected to be closed until 10:00 tonight. hear how one man learned the flames were dangerously close to his own house, tonight at 6:30. dozens of people in the south bay are staying someplace else tonight after a huge fire destroyed their apartments. it started at 3:30 this morning at the complex on walnut blossom drive in san jose. firefighters say residents told

them they heard an explosion just before the fire started. the flames spread quickly, ripping through eight apartments on the second floor. the san jose fire department says it was roaring when they showed up just minutes after getting the call. >> the fire department arrived on scene. the fire was through the roof and extended into the attic space, common attic space of the affected units. initially we got everybody out quickly to make sure everybody was safe. >> no one was hurt in the fire. eight apartments were gutted. water and smoke damaged several others. 37 people burned out by this fire are in shelters tonight. no word yet on what caused the fire. a band of showers blew through much of the south bay this afternoon. this is what it looked like in santa cruz, just a couple of hours ago. got a pretty good soaking. it is all headed south now, but the stage is being set for more rain on monday, as low pressure in northern california will sweep toward the north bay overnight. by tomorrow night, the resulting rain will dump as much as an inch in the higher terrain. in fact, flash flood watches

are posted for the burn areas in the north counties. mud flows are possible, as strong downpours do materialize tomorrow. after all of that, more changes on the way for tuesday. we'll have all the details when we cover the forecast, in a few minutes. well, the pentagon says it was a naval trident missile test that lit up the sky and social media last night. however, some people still don't know what to think. the blue glow was seen all over the western united states and even here in the bay area. it immediately sparked all sorts of speculation. a comet, meteor, maybe a ufo. those who saw it had all kinds of theories about what they were looking at. some were even scared. >> then it floated around and then it went higher and higher and higher and then it shot away. >> what did you think it was? >> i think it was aliens. >> maybe a light from an airplane or ship of some sort. >> i was getting ready to duck and dodge, you know, from an explosion because that's what i thought was going to happen. >> there were a few clues that something was up. the southern california airports had changed their

flight paths. they say the navy says next time it will give a little more warning when it plans to do a test. it was a somber scene in st. petersburg, russia today. thousands gathered to mourn the victims of flight 926. church goers lit candles and sang hymns. the russian passenger plane broke apart in flight and crashed in asia last week. all 222 people on board were killed. russian president vladimir putin has suspended all lights from russia to egypt. investigators say they are 99% certain that a bomb brought down that plane. data from the flight recorder show there was no mechanical failure. the voice recorder picked up a sound of an explosion 24 minutes into the flight. investigators think the bomb may have been smuggled aboard by isis. if that's true, the u.s. house intelligence committee says the extremist group has, quote, eclipsed al-qaeda as the gravest terrorist threat in the

saturday night live --- andy aren't very good. the new york times blamed t material ---- and sa . reviews are in on donald trump's appearance on "saturday night live" and they aren't very good. the "new york times" blamed the material and said it was no fault of the presidential candidate. trump coming in had said he could take a joke, but hardly any were thrown his way. he did veto some of the material he felt could be too risque. perhaps the best moment was his monologue. >> now that i'm here, this is actually the best monologue in snl history! can you believe that? >> pretty good. >> yeah, that's pretty good. >> aye, aye, aye, look at this. >> you think you're this terrific person -- [ laughter ] >> you think you're this, you're that, ba, ba, ba, you're

being very naive and quite frankly, you're fired! [ laughter ] >> well, larry david did call out you're racist, which was clearly a scripted move to derail protesters. david referred to the $5000 bounty offered for someone in the audience to disrupt trump. >> [ protesters ] protesters did march to rockefeller center last night to express their displeasure with trump's appearance on the show. that's where "saturday night live" is recorded. the activists were upset with trump's disparaging words used over the summer to describe mexican immigrants. and continuing with campaign 2016, we're just two days away from the next republican presidential debate. in top candidates are feeling the heat. ben carson is facing scrutiny over a questionable autobiography. donald trump continues to fan the flames in his own way. >> reporter: dr. ben carson's life story helped him surge to the top of the polls.

but now critics are questioning whether some of carson's statements in his 1996 autobiography, "gifted hands" are true. >> the whole point is to distract the populous, distract me. >> reporter: the retired neurosurgeon is accused of lying about his hard knocks upbringing and claims of receiving a scholarship offer to attend west point military academy. carson claims the media is on a, quote, witch hunt. >> every single day or every other day or every week, you know, they are going to come out with you said this when you were 13. >> reporter: carson is running neck and neck with donald trump in recent polls. he was flying high off his snl hosting gig on saturday night. the show received its best ratings in three years. >> you think that's how it's going to be when i'm president. you're wrong. it's going to be even better! up quite the controversy. here are are the cups, plain red with a green logo. some customers say this year's design, or lack thereof, is a disappointment. some go as far as calling the cups part of a war on christmas. others say who cares? >> as long as the coffee tastes good, i don't care what cup it's in. >> doesn't have a comment yet on the backlash, but shows this on its website. they say this year we wanted to usher in the holidays with the purity of design that welcomes all of our stories. thanksgiving is fast approaching and if you plan on buying a fresh turkey, it will probably cost you more this year. that's because some 9 million turkeys were wiped out by the bird flu this past spring. with the shortage comes higher costs. industry insiders say prices could increase 20 to 30%. fresh birds may be hard to come by because grocery chains may run out early. overall, more than 45 million turkeys and chickens died because of the bird flu this year. and it appears people are

still fascinated with the jfk assassination. the license plates from the limousine he was in when he was shot have been sold at auction. someone paid $100,000 for them. the opening bid was $40,000. after the assassination, the limo was sent to a cincinnati company for upgrades. the plates were tossed in the trash, but the co-owner scooped them up and put them in storage. here's what the plates look like today, 52 years later. that '64 on the upper right is the expiration date. here's the front license plate from the day in dallas, november 22, 1963, in case there are any doubts. another piece of history from the '60s sold at auction this weekend. john lennon's acoustic guitar went for $2.4 million. it's the guitar he used to write "i want to hold your hand" and "please please me." it disappeared in 1963 after a show in london, only to show in

san diego 50 years later. the sale price is a record for a single guitar. well, the earth opened up outside an ihop restaurant and swallowed up a number of cars. take a look at this. the massive fissure formed last night. 12 cars and trucks and suvs is 30 feet wide, 400 feet long. no one was in any of the cars when it happened. investigators are working to determine what caused the erosion. they say it appears to be along a pipeline. and check out this picture of the sinkhole we found on twitter. someone took this aerial view from a drone. it gives you a good perspective on just how big that sinkhole is. >> boy, i'll be sure to avoid that ihop in mississippi now. >> don't go there. we've got rain to contend with in the bay area today and not much actually. most amounts less than a tenth of an inch. when it did rain, it poured, as the front enhanced as it moved south. most of the shower activity has

headed well south and east of the bay area. yet don't be lulled into a false sense of security. there's more on the way. we look at the gleaming golden gate bridge and the numbers right now down to about the 60- degree range for much of the bay. 58 here in the city. 58 for san jose. in santa rosa, 59 degrees. low pressure over the pacific northwest is now going to sink south into the bay area so that tomorrow after we dispense with a lingering shower or two tonight we might get a thunderstorm or two tomorrow, as the low presses south. the forecast is for up to a half inch of rain when all of this moves through on monday. after that, low pressure scoots out of the area and as it heads out, we'll replace it with fairly anemic high pressure. then increasing sunshine for tuesday. on the future cast, though, here's how things look by 11:00 tonight. you can see some of those showers popping up offshore and then as the day progresses tomorrow, freezing it here at 6:00 a.m. as the day gets under way. in this case with that low pressure approaching, low

pressure, unstable low is like unstable people. don't know what they will do next. you can just see widely scattered but fairly robust cells all over the area tomorrow. as the time lapse runs on, you can see widely scattered activity coming in over the bay area. by activity, i mean rain. that's why there are flash flood watches up around lake and solano counties, parts of west sacramento county. so if it really rains hard, it could get debris flows. winter weather advisories are posted through tomorrow night. from take show to south, 4 to 8 inches. live over the city, more rain for tomorrow. more than we had today. heaviest amounts, half an inch to an inch. then it will clear on tuesday. we'll be dry rest of the week. next chance of rain coming in a week from today, on sunday. heading out, you will not escape the rain. 52 at mendocino, same for
