it was impossible to miss. e huge plume of black smoke c be seen all over the city. here's a live look at the se right now. the tire shop is just a shell at this point. it wasn't the only building involved. kpix five's mark kelly shows us: people in the apartment complex next had just minutes to grab wh they could -- and get out. rolling stock auto shop on 16th--filled with rubber tires--now up in smoke. foxy linzmier, evacuated apartme --"i'm sure there s going te some odor from that." the sp owner and staff too upset to talk on camera. but around e corner....adam nieting coule the flames creeping dangero close to his apartment. adam nieting, lives near fire --e saw the flames out the back window, and the windows were extremely hot so at that pot we knew we needed to get ou" 110 firefighters hit the au shop hard with water. but it wasn't easy. choppere shows the entire roof collapsed...meani ng it was dangerous for firefighters o inside...so they had to work from outside the building. still--it quickly spread to apartment next door. asst. f dave franklin, division 3, --"it extended up to the ro and go the wood frame struc next to it involved." that's where foxy linzmier was sleg when an officer came into h apartment and told her to g out. she grabbed what she could...threw it in this trunk....and got out with h life. foxy linzmier, evacuad apartment --"grab your comp, grab your camera, grab those things that are expensive to replace." mark kelly --"no e was hurt, but investigators looking into what started t fire in the tire shop and he red tagged the building. crs will be here all night keepg an eye on the fire. sigout." back out live now: firefigh plan to stay at the scene through the night. they're firefighters plan to stay ae scene through the night. 110 firefighters hit the auto shop with water.

kpix 5's maria medina is there tonight. >> reporter: we've confirmed a firefighter suffered minor injuries. this fire, so intense you can still smell it in the air. one woman says she barely had enough time to grab her shoes and blanket before she ran out. >> i opened the door and all i saw was flames. >> reporter: many, like veronica at this apartment complex suddenly woken this morning by a knock, then screams, warnings from firefighters or neighbors to get out. >> did you think your apartment was going to catch fire? i thought so. >> reporter: firefighters got the call around 3:30. >> we had heavy fire from the attic space and it spread to the common attic. >> reporter: as the sun came up, the damage revealed. eight apartments destroyed by fire or water, and more than three dozen people without a home. >> that's why i came over to see the damage, because the fire was pretty bad. >> reporter: this woman says the fire was so bad, she

watched smoke and flames engulf the block from across the street in her home. >> i was surprised and sad for the people that lived there because now they are homeless. >> reporter: homeless weeks before the holiday and a close call for many others. >> did you think you would lose everything? >> i thought so. i honestly did. my heart was about to get out of my chest. >> what do you do at that moment when you think your apartment's going to catch on fire? >> just hope for the best. >> reporter: and the red cross says they are helping between 20 and 30 people. the fire, still under investigation, but firefighters say it is not suspicious. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. the other big story in the bay area today, the rain. wet roads are being blamed for a couple of nasty crashes in sonoma county. the first happened just before 9:00 a.m. in santa rosa on porter creek road. a 27-year-old woman was killed when she collided with an oncoming car. the impact was so severe, it flipped her mangled car up onto the guardrail. a 6-year-old boy was also taken

to the hospital with minor injuries. >> we're in for the rainy season this time of year. it definitely played a factor today. obviously, what started the whole thing was she was on the wrong side of the road a couple feet, but given the wet roads, she didn't have as good traction and that caused her to go sideways. >> the second crash happened just after 11:00 near petaluma. the driver of the green car was using the wet roads to intentionally spin his back wheels. while drifting, he lost control and slammed into a small pickup truck. everyone involved was taken to the hospital. no word on their conditions tonight. well, it was the perfect recipe for accidents today. just add water. there was plenty of that down south. this was the scene as the rain rolled through santa cruz earlier today. you can see it was enough to bring out the umbrellas and get the windshield wipers going. they have got heavy rain in monterey right now. it is all headed south, but the stage is being set for more rain on monday. low pressure in northern california will sweep toward the north bay overnight. by tomorrow night, the resulting rain will dump as much as an inch in the higher

terrain. in fact, flash flood watches are posted for the burn areas in the north counties. mud flows are possible if strong downpours do materialize tomorrow. and what do you know? snow in the sierra tonight. this is how it looks at squaw valley right now. great news for skiers, not so good for drivers. we go to truckee, where chain controls are in effect. >> reporter: we're in downtown truckee, where it is wet and cold for a change. not a lot of people out on this sunday night, but just a few miles west of here in king vail, a much different picture. it is snowing in king vail tonight, snow piling up on the mountains and a lot of excitement. lot of people telling me this is their first time out in the snow in a long time. so much relief after years of drought. that's the big story tonight. it is wet and finally feeling like winter in northern california. in truckee tonight, kpix 5. a gruesome discovery at

crown beach in alameda. a man's body was spotted floating in the water around 6:45 this morning. so far, there's no word on who he is or what killed him. police are working to identify the remains. still to come, could this be colin kaepernick's final play as a 49er? why the team could be taking a pass on him next season. >> and this flip may have cost reggie bush his career. now, he's taking the city of st. louis to court.

they won today. 49ers fans at la rocca's bar are cheering, but not quite bubbling over with joy by their team's victory today. >> gabbert is not the exact answer, but we appreciate the w today. >> reporter: blaine gabbert, the backup quarterback, looked confident, connected with receivers and led his team to a victory. >> what was going your mind today? >> they didn't look that much better. i was impressed he won the game, put it that way. >> is he our new guy? >> he's the new guy right now. >> reporter: after a truly awful season up to this point, the starting quarterback, colin kaepernick, was benched this week, spent almost the entire game today on the sidelines. then in the fourth quarter, a strange twist of fate, gabbert got hit hard. while doctors checked him over for concussion, kaepernick went in for a couple of plays. >> he's coming into the game. >> so there's a moment where kaepernick goes back in. >> and they booed him.

completely transformed toni homeowners near 43-rd and do troublemaker . a rundown roadway in oakland is completely transformed tonight. homeowners near 43rd and dover were tired of trouble makers in their neighborhood, so anne makovec shows us they planted seeds of change. >> you are the city, you know? look to yourself, look to your neighbors, look to the resources you have. >> reporter: rob sellna used his to transform this space, this one-block stretch of dover near 43rd had been a magnet for blight. the neighborhood's hot bed for crime and illegal dumping. >> dumping happens near freeway land because it's secluded and has an abandoned feel to it and people don't think they will get caught. >> reporter: the roadway east of 24, which sellna calls bad urban planning was seen as the road to nowhere, owned part by the city, part by cal trans. >> we said, hey, if you're not going to maintain it, let us

take it over and we'll take care of the space. >> reporter: it took three years and $50,000 in donations, and it didn't hurt that sellna is a land use attorney able to navigate the red tape. today, neighbors have access to about 20 wooden beds and informal cooperative and the planning process has galvanized the community. >> i think the project is really neat in the way i could get to know the neighborhood and it's cool. it's cool to know neighbors. you feel like you can knock on their door. >> reporter: and plant a seed for something good. >> the more these kinds of things that happen where people take it upon themselves to make their neighborhoods better, the better the whole city's going to be. >> reporter: in oakland, anne makovec, kpix 5. and now we've got rain to make the garden grow. didn't get too much today, but this thing is enhancing toward monterey bay and monterey itself has picked up heavy rain in the last hour or so. for us, not much. the front now moving out into the great valley and we are looking at the golden gate bridge. streets are not even slick out

there. the numbers are cool with concord at 58 degrees, oakland at 59, livermore at 57 degrees. 57 at the studios. low pressure is spinning just in the pacific northwest. they will get rain in seattle tomorrow and down in the bay area, the rain spreading south but it's not a classic cold front. it's going to have popcorn showers popping up all over the place. we'll get more rain out of this tomorrow than we had today, as this low sinks south. we'll pick up half an inch to an inch of rain. it will vary widely. some places will get dumped on. other places may not get much. then the low moves out and we'll go back to cool and dry weather from tuesday through saturday. then after saturday, a chance of rain coming into bay area on sunday, a week from today. meantime, we'll expect that rain tomorrow. on the future cast, we'll freeze this at midnight tonight, just to show you a few showers moving into the north bay, about five hours from now. as the day goes on, look at the widely scattered nature of this. i mean, just for instance at

7:00, as the morning commute gets under way, there's a pretty good cell up here in parts of the north bay. elsewhere, there's not much. again, as the day goes on, the general activity increases over the bay area until it begins to hint at drying out by the morning commute tomorrow night. so unstable weather in the bay area tomorrow means flash flood watches up north in the burn areas. thunderstorms are possible with this, by the way, as the low gets closer. if you really get dumped on in some of the burn areas, debris flows are possible. be careful up there in some of lake county and parts of solano county where the burns happen. from tahoe south, winter weather advisories posted. winter snow monday morning. 4 to 8 inches at lake level, 12 inches above 7000 feet. looking over the city, we'll sum it up. more rain for tomorrow, more rain than we had today. heaviest amounts, half an inch to an inch. clearing on tuesday. dry the rest of the week. out of the bay area, you will not escape it. rain from redding to fresno, lake tahoe and yosemite get snow. overnight lows tonight, a bit
