silence -- in tribute to the victims of france's terrori attacks. the democrats start the debate with a moment of silence in tribute to the victims of france's terror attacks. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette goodrich. cbs reporter marlie hall is in des moines, iowa, and joins with us some of the highlights from the debate. >> reporter: the democratic presidential candidates squared off on issues from security to the economy but right from the start, every candidate's first words had to do with the terror attacks in france. the second democratic presidential debate started in silence as the candidates recognized those killed in the

terrorist attacks in paris. and the first question focused on national security and isis, which has claimed responsibility. >> we have to look at isis as the leading threat of an international terror network. >> reporter: hillary clinton leads in the polls but senator bernie sanders tried to slow down the front-runner questioning her vote as senator to approve the 2003 invasion of iraq. >> the disastrous invasion of iraq, something that i strongly opposed, has unraveled the region completely. >> reporter: former maryland governor martin o'malley called clinton's iraq vote a big mistake. >> it was also the disbanding of many elements of the iraqi army that are now showing up as part of isis. >> reporter: iowa is an early caucus state. in about 3 months people will pick the democrat they believe should be the nominee for president. the candidates support a minimum wage increase but argue over how much.

o'malley and sanders want $15 an hour. clinton wants $12. >> if you go to $12 it would be the highest historic average -- >> come on. it should always be going up. >> reporter: the candidates did agree that you this regulations are needed on wall street to protect the middle class. the next democratic presidential debate will be held next month on december 19 in new hampshire. in des moines, iowa, marlie hall kpix 5. >> and joining us in studio to talk about how the candidates fared is kpix 5's political analyst melissa caen. >> hi. >> good evening. >> good evening to you. we saw you in our studio in our newsroom watching so what's your reaction? >> very exciting. no better way to spend saturday night. >> absolutely! [ laughter ] >> than watching the democratic debate. my first reaction and i'm biased because we are a cbs affiliate but the debate ran well. the moderators covered a lot of ground and there wasn't a lot of talk. martin o'malley did well.

he actually needed a big night. he needed to distinguish himself and while he is still probably going to be in third place tomorrow, he really did a good job, made a lot of great statements, called donald trump an immigrant bashing carnival barker which twitter really enjoyed. [ laughter ] >> so definitely stepped up got a little bit of the spotlight for himself this time around. sanders did well. hillary clinton just had to keep the momentum going and pretty much did that. >> at a certain point it seemed like clinton -- they were talking obviously in the wake of the paris event, she was talking about the issue of gun control. i mean, all the more. >> yes. once again, in the first debate she got a big applause line when she said we have to go after the nra and again she went back to the well talked about gun control in america and how many people have been killed by guns since just the last debate in october. >> she said since the last debate in las vegas, nearly

3,000 people have been killed by guns, 21 mass shootings. watch. >> this is an emergency! there are a lot of things we have do in our country. reining in one street is one of them. i have a good plan. [ laughter ] >> but we have to also go after the gun lobby and 92% of americans agree we should have universal background checks, close the gun show loophole, close - -- . >> hilly and bernie sanders did -- seemed to agree on reining in the big banks. >> i applaud secretary clinton. she did, she is the senator from new york. she worked -- many of us supported you in trying to rebuild that devastation. but at the end of the day, wall street today has enormous economic and political power. their business model is greed and fraud. and for the sake of our economy, the major banks must be broken up. >> when you saw that moment, what did you think?

>> i thought if there's any loser tonight it's wall street. everyone was -- it was a contest to see who could be tougher on the big banks or on wall street. bernie sanders went right after clinton who had gotten some flak for receiving so many donations from wall street. and he took it right to her on that issue of campaign contributions from the banks she would be regulating. >> it's interesting with social media we find out what twitter is revealing and do they have that realtime, do they know when hillary was mentioning the female vote 60% that she went up in that kind of likeability or not after the fact? >> they track it but that's not necessarily available at the moment but we do know for example tonight when she responded to sanders' criticism of her taking contributions from wall street, she responded by sort of invoking 9/11 immediately twitter sort of freaked out and some twitter questioned -- they had to come back to the question later because somebody on twitter said i'm not comfortable with the invoking 9/11 to answer the question. she had to answer it again.

so twitter was providing some realtime interaction there. >> we could talk forever. we appreciate your time. >> happy to be here. >> thank you. at a rally today in beaumont texas donald trump asked for a moment of silence to ask for the victims in the attacks. >> nobody had guns in paris but the bad guys. nobody. nobody had guns. i'll tell you what. you can say what you want. but if they had guns, if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry -- [ applause and cheers ] >> one of trump's rivals carly fiorina said at a gop summit today the attacks in paris were a direct consequence of the obama administration's policies. the next republican debate is december 15. and now the latest on the deadly terrorist attacks in paris. hundreds of people lit candles tonight to remember the victims of the attack. isis has claimed responsibility saying 8 men carried it out. 7 of them blew themselves up,

one of them was killed by police. at least 129 people are dead. more than 350 others are wounded. we know that at least one of the victims that was killed is from california. she is 23-year-old nohemi gonzalez. she was a design major at long beach state. the school says she was at one of the restaurants the terrorists attacked. one of her former professors remembered her as a mentor to other students. >> nohemi was something of a star in our department. she was a shining star. and she brought joy, happiness, laughter, to everybody she worked with. >> 16 other long beach state students are in paris. the school says they are all safe. a memorial is being planned for tomorrow night. at least three people are under arrest tonight after raids in belgium. they took place in a suburb of brussels. the suspects have links to the paris attacks and a car rented in brussels found near one of the sites in paris. the u.s. officials say the

terrorists coordinated and planned their attack in belgium. kenneth craig has learned the timeline of how the deadly plot unfolded. >> reporter: across paris, mourners with candles comforted each other at memorials one day after their city was terrorized. >> we feel lucky a little but really sad for our friends and people who died. >> reporter: a french prosecutor described how the coordinated attacks unfold the. they were carried out by three teams of extremists. the assaults began at 9:20 when a suicide bomber at a sports stadium whose vest was detected blew himself up killing a passerby. minutes later another team opened fire at a string of crowded cafes killing dozens. the gunmen first attacked customers at this restaurant firing about 100 bullets. some of them went right through these front windows. about 15 minutes later another group opened fire and took

hostages at the mengke bateer where the american band eagles of -- at the bataclan where the american band eagles of death metal were playing. police killed one attacker. police arrested three people in belgium who may be linked to the terrorism. the "islamic state" claimed responsibility. french president francois hollande addressed the nation calling the attacks an act of war n paris, kenneth craig, kpix 5. >> reporter: there is a memorial outside the concert hall in paris where the greatest loss of life occurred. people have been dropping off flowers, candles and messages to honor the victims. ♪[ music ] also outside the theater a piano painted with a peace symbol appeared and a man sat down to serenade the crowd. the song was lennon's

"imagine." there's words from the producers of a terrorist themed film called made in france that it will not open next week as planned. movie posters hanging in the paris metro station featuring an ak-47 assault rifle atop the eiffel tower with being removed. a southern california man is grateful to hear his niece survived the carnage there. she is recovering at the hospital. he says playing dead may have saved her life. >> she got two bullets, one in the article, the other in the leg. the bullet in the arm had the the bone. the bone [ indiscernible ] the tibia is crushed. but she is going to be okay. she is going to be fine. >> a recent transplant from los angeles is among the wounded. helen wilson was shot in the leg at the concert and will survive. a tech worker in silicon valley is in paris. john schneider heard shots as he left a bar near the shooting and said today the city

obviously is still on edge. >> i didn't go out into paris in the afternoon when i heard it was fairly safe and the police presence is very strong at this point. i was by the eiffel tower a few hours ago. it was quite a scene. there were a lot of military presence. >> scary moments. >> one man texted his wife at home after shots rang out. >> that concert hall, it was terrible. it was a band from california that was playing. >> i know. >> via a shake eve skype connection kathleen moriarty of san carlos and her daughter got face time with her husband on a business trip in paris. >> you heard the bang, bang, bang, bang. somebody got very quiet in the restaurant.

>> reporter: no one knew what was happening until a friend checked his smartphone and realized that the shots were part of a terrorist attack. >> kept looking at his phone and kept saying oh, my god there's another one! and a third one and a fourth one. >> reporter: that's when brian texted kathleen who was teaching preschoolers back in the bay area. >> thank god i noticed the first thing he wrote on there is i am fine. >> reporter: two hours into the attack, things suddenly became terrifyingly real again for brian. >> suddenly ran inside and she yelled out in french, everybody get under the table! so we did. and we dove down and didn't real ly know why she had said that. you know, we didn't know if she saw anyone coming down the street or heard gunfire or what it was. >> reporter: brian will fly home to the bay area on sunday. >> i can't tell you, i have never been so excited to see him in my life. >> reporter: andria borba, kpix 5. and stay with kpix 5 tonight. we'll be airing a special episode of 48 hours called paris under attack. that's at 10:00 right here on

7 people and injured 10 more. it appears the train was going too fast and derailed near germany. several cars ended up in the canal along the tracks. there were 49 people on board. there is no indication there was terrorism. now for an update on the tour bus crash in san francisco that left 20 people hurt. chopper 5 showed us the bus in union square yesterday. police say the bus began to pick up speed on post street then blew through two intersections and slammed into construction scaffolding with collapsed. four people are in critical condition at sf general. two are in serious condition. one has been discharged. another is a minor whose status isn't being released. three people were admitted last night to st. francis hospital but no word on their conditions. kpix 5's emily turner has the bus company's response to all this. emily. reporter: the scaffolding is exactly where that bus

careened into that construction zone. you can see that they have the plywood right back up ready to go almost immediately. now, we also have new information that i got from san francisco police department that the traffic investigation unit is now handling enforcement of this case. now, what that means we are not sure because they aren't releasing new information beyond that. but from our news partner kcbs we have learned that the bus is at the impound. there's dashcam video. police are trying to figure out what happened as well as checking mick cloudy what happened on that bus because they don't know if it's mechanical if it was a medical issue or if there was in fact drugs or alcohol but in the meantime the bus company has released this statement. it's from the ceo of city sightseeing san francisco. it says, quote, everyone at city sightseeing san francisco is deeply saddened by the union square accident. our hearts and prayers go out to the individuals and families who were impacted. we are cooperating with the authorities to determine how this happened and we pray that everyone involved recovers

fully and quickly. but here in union square tourists don't seem to notice. many of them didn't even know it was the same place where the tour buses were loading, tourists said, they weren't worried and were going out to enjoy the city anyway. >> we're going to give it a shot and see. hopefully i'll be able to talk to you after it and i'm still walking and talking. >> and i did speak to people near union square who saw it all unfold yesterday. they were very shaken up. they say everything seems to be back to normal today. live in san francisco, emily turner, kpix 5. part of the old bay bridge has gone out with a bang. this morning, one of the piers was imploded. as kpix 5's mark kelly shows us, it went off as planned. r. i thought i was going to see something come down." bite blanca vides, watched implosion--"i thought it wod be more. i mean, it was oka" but caltrans isn't concerned with theatrics. th was to bri >> reporter: it took 600 robinson-lea charges to bring the bridge's largest pier down. one family woke up at 4 a.m. to get a front row seat but weren't all that impressed with the show.

>> i thought it would be bigger. i thought i was going to see something come down. >> i thought it would be more. i mean, it was okay. >> reporter: but caltrans isn't concerned with theatrics. their goal was to bring down pier e3 safely. >> everything went according to plan that we're aware of. >> reporter: caltrans says it chose november to do the blast for a specific reason. >> and it was determined that november would be the best time because of the least amount of wildlife in the area. >> reporter: crews will spend the coming days in the water to see if the blast really worked and the pier collapsed the way it should. >> we'll get information from that data. we don't have this quickly. >> reporter: if it did work we could see the other 21 piers imploded. >> so i'm going to come back. >> reporter: on treasure island mark kelly, kpix 5. >> that implosion cost $20 million. well, still ahead, if you liked today, boy, are you in

mendocino which will get wet first and this front more north to south than a lot of these fronts means clouds rapidly increase and rain develops after midnight first in the north bay and not simultaneously in the south bay but first increasing clouds tonight. they have flooding up there on the snoqualmie in the pacific northwest. we won't get flooding but we'll get some rain. we'll get the rain after midnight in sonoma and marin counties and then it will spread south after sunrise for the rest of the bay area. temperatures will follow suit. temperatures come down so does the rain. snow begins on sunday. if you are headed to the hills, winters weather advisories, heavy snow 2 to 4" lake level and a foot above 7,000 feet. the rain spreads south tonight. heaviest amounts from a quarter to .75". then we turn it around, monday, friday, next week sunny. first tomorrow blustery cool and wet. overnight lows tonight, 38 in santa rosa. 42 in san jose. and the daytime highs are mostly going to be in the upper
