morning. at least 27 people are dead. more than 100 were taken hostage including americans. and these photos show moments of chaos as police surrounded the building. craig boswell reports u.s. forces are getting involved in the rescue. >> reporter: freed hostages ran for safety in mali's capital after ten suspected islamic extremists ambushed the raddison blu hotel. the group armed with guns and grenades stormed the hotel taking 170 people hostage. all are now safe. witnesses say the men shouted god is great in arabic during their assault. as many as 14 hostages were american, five escaped, the others later rescued. president obama was asked about the siege during a meeting in malaysia. >> we're monitoring the situation. >> reporter: u.s. and french forces stationed in the african nation helped the military free

the hostages. the hotel is popular with foreigners. two groups linked to al qaeda are claiming responsibility. craig boswell, cbs news the state department. >> al qaeda-linked extremists took over mali in 2012. france launched a military intervention in 2013 and hundreds of french soldiers remain in the country. new developments in the paris attacks. a third body is found in the apartment that was raided by the police on wednesday. the prosecutor's office says it's a woman but her identity is unknown. the other two people killed were previously identified as the mastermind of the attacks and his female cousin. she was 26-year-old hasna aitboulahcen. photos published in the "daily mail" include a selfie of her lounging in a bubble bath. police tracked her and the others to the apartment and tried to talk to her but she blew herself up. she only became interested in the islamic extremism a w

weeks ago according to her brother. a manhunt is intensifying. authorities have widened their search for this man, salah abdeslam, to the netherlands. the dell judge terror suspect -- the belgium terror suspected escaped after the paris attacks. no one knows where he is. >> i think it's the matter finish because one action make again and again and again. >> the french senate has voted to extend a state of emergency for three months after last week's deadly attacks. facebook is apologizing for suspending a san francisco woman's account. her first name is isis. the engineer says the social media site actually blocked her last week. facebook claims it was cracking down on users that were sympathizing with the terrorist group. a couple days later facebook reinstated her account after she provided a passport as documentation. new at noon israeli spy jonathan pollard is free. he was released from federal prison this morning after

serving 30 years for providing classified u.s. government information to israel. his attorneys have already filed a challenge to terms of his parole saying saying it's oppressive. a show of force was brought out. the bus belonged to the alameda county sheriff's office. chopper 5 as armed deputies carefully unloaded inmates and transferred them to other vehicles. the bus was going to court in contra costa county and we're told the bus had mechanical issues that caused smoke in the engine. oakland police could be firming a man wanted for murder is now -- confirm a man wanted for murder is dead. jason brown was a suspect in a livermore shooting last month in the parking lot of a shopping center on first street. he was also wanted for a killing in fresno. he held police at bay from inside an oakland motel 6 since yesterday afternoon. when officers went in the room this morning, he was dead. investigators say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. s.w.a.t. team officers say they did not

fire any guns. a registered sex offender has been evicted from a motel 6 in vallejo. fraisure smith moved in on monday after efforts to place him in other cities failed. the manager says once they learned his identity, he was told to leave. >> i have a sense that he will not be in the city of vallejo any longer. it was encouraging to find out that motel 6 is a partner with the city of vallejo in doing what it can to make our city safe and pleasant. >> it's unclear where smith goes next. he was convicted in 2006 of assault with intent to commit rape. in other bay area headlines a man beaten by two alameda county sheriff's deputies lack week in san francisco may have permanent injuries. surveillance video shows stanislav petrov being hit by batons even after he appeared to surrender. the city's public defender's office says petrov may lose the use of at least one arm. and late night bus service in san francisco is ending for

some bart riders. next month, transit officials are cutting the route to the pittsburg-baypoint station. bart says that line was rarely used and too costly to maintain. and san francisco state will not pursue contracts with soft drink companies. the companies would have paid the university big money for exclusive rights to sell its beverages on campus. but the administration nixed the plan after hearing from opponents. and new at noon, more holiday shopping options in the east bay. kpix 5's anne makovec on the veteranvated mall ready to re- open -- renovated mall to re- open. >> reporter: construction work continued a few weeks away from the ceremony. just in time for the holiday shopping season, broadway plaza is now partially open for business. >> i feel like my daughter is getting married! it's been so amazing. >> reporter: the project broke ground in march 2014 closing parking structures and almost half the plaza's stores.

report this morning on vision zero, the city's safety project for pedestrians and cyclists. he says improvements are already ahead of schedule. >> these are to be celebrated because we are absolutely sure, given the data that we worked from, that more lives will be saved as a result of these improvements. >> plans are in the works for improvements in at least 6 other locations. that will make 30 by the end of february. the goal is to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city by 2024. a state senator says fastrak needs to get its act together. as kpix 5's andria borba has the story of a woman who has been wrongfully charged over and over again. >> reporter: she has 55 ticks for not paying her toll on bay area bridges. there's just one little problem. >> this pickup has not been down in the bay area for 15 years. >> reporter: mrs. flynn has been getting citation after citation without her wheels ever reaching the bay bridge toll plaza.

the ticket trouble has been stacking up for 18 months. >> first i was really upset and frustrated which i guess i still a.m. >> reporter: randy from the bay area toll authority falls on his sword. >> we knew there was a problem with this read. this read was inaccurate and we have a way to block that read so it doesn't happen again. it just didn't happen here and we're sorry about that. >> reporter: randy says of the 120 million cars that cross the san francisco bay every year, sometimes there are mistakes. >> they just misread one digit on their plate. >> reporter: mrs. flynn said she couldn't get anyone to help until her state senator ted gaines stepped in. >> this is an issue that should have been resolved on the first call and it took many, many calls, hours an hours of mrs. flynn's time on the phone. >> reporter: like the sea of red taillights heading west from oakland, the bay area toll authority would like to put this episode in their rear view mirror. >> we are human and our customer service center is

human and humans do make mistakes. >> reporter: gaines sits on the senate transportation committee. he wants the bay area toll authority to hand over all the times in the past two years they have issued incorrect tickets to people and come up with a better plan to get those tickets cleared. at the toll plaza, andria borba, kpix 5. right now, students in stanford are in the fifth day of a protest demanding the university divest from all fossil fuel interests. they are not go to be meeting with the administering. kiet do reports. >> reporter: the students are holding another rally. camping out in the cold all week long they finally got some movement. it looks like it from the administration. the students say they have a meeting with the president sometime today but the university has not confirmed that. we stepped out ahead of the crowd to divest from coal and i think we can do the same with fossil fuel. >> reporter: they won't back down. >> if you were driving a car and you were taking a plane, then how could you demand that stanford divest from fossil fuel? >> as one of the leading institutions in the u.s. on sustainability, stanford has done a lot. they have put a half billion dollars into a new energy facility. they have cut their carbon emissions by 68%. to bring their finances in line with that they need to divest from fossil fuel. >> reporter: dozens have done so but none with stanford's prestige. a report says even if all schools divested from fossil fuel stock it would age make a dent. >> we are not trying to economically bankrupt the fossil fuel industry. we are trying to socially and politically bankrupt the fossil fuel industry. >> reporter: a spokesman for university president john hennessy says an advisory panel is considering fossil fuel divestment but these students want action now before the

currently according to george hughes, it's 61 degrees. and george has me a little concerned today because he says he is actually reporting from the va hospital so george, we give you all of our best and hope you're doing well. other weather watcher in the area, in pacifica that's cool in the mid-50s. you go check out vallejo. charlie raines says it's 78 degrees. hi, charlie! all right, let's step on out the door right now. in san francisco, bird's-eye view of the transamerica pyramid looking towards the golden gate bridge not a cloud in the sky there. we have nothing but pristine conditions. it's like a springtime day here in the bay area! it's 69 degrees in san francisco. 72 in santa rosa. and here you go, frank and michelle, and everybody heading on out to the "holiday lighting" of the embarcadero, 65 degrees. wow! all right. this is autumn time in the bay area. sunny and mild through the weekend, but a big-time change coming next week. this is the ridge of high pressure continuing to strengthen as it builds in closer to the state of california.

you can see how those clouds are banking off the ridge. few are undercutting the ridge and that's why you will see high clouds moving through. but overall it is pleasant. we do have rain in the forecast upper level area of low pressure developing in the gulf of alaska. it's going to take a nosedive down south. the number one key feature with that, the cold air mass. not so much the precipitation. only about .2" maybe a half inch at tops. we'll see some light snow in the greater lake tahoe area so be mindful of that if you are heading to the high sierra for the holiday. today we have ten hours of daylight. ten. so get out and enjoy it. 63 to about 75 degrees today. pretty similar over the weekend. we cool gently monday and you're going to feel the difference on tuesday. there's that rain and wind and cool event on wednesday. you know, it's starting not to only feel a little bit like christmas, well, at least it will next week, but it's looking like christmas. the marines joined forces with sarah and vinnie from alice

thank you, frank. jill schlesinger looks at the job perk that many employees value more than money. >> reporter: unlimited vacation time, on-site child care, free food, these perks are a reality at some companies. but employees say there's one benefit that trumps them all: flexibility. in a survey by staffing firm modus, more than 50% of those surveyed chose flexible work hours as the perk they most desired. flexibility can mean a variety of things from working at home to not having to be in the office at the same time each day. in many cases, this flexibility is more important than money. job site "glassdoor" found that 79% of employees would prefer new or additional benefits to a pay increase. this was particularly important to women and younger employees. these younger employees say that ideally they would like to telecommute full time. but the average telecommuter is 49 years old, college educated, and earns more than $65,000 a year. that's because, increasingly, these positions are not relegated to customer service or administrative work. instead, it's often managers and even executives that have the corner on flexibility.
