>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> a trip to the lake turns deadly for a woman walking her dog after an out of control pickup truck slammed into her and landed in the water. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette goodrich. it happened at lake merced boulevard in san francisco. emily turner on how a twist of fate helped to save the woman's friend. >> reporter: this is how one woman's afternoon walk ended. the 65-year-old woman was walking her dog with a friend around lake merced when a truck jumped the curb and hit and killed her. her friend was only fivesteps behind her and narrowly missed manager hit. she along with dozens of other people saw the whole thing happened. >> she hit the curb with the same speed. no brakes. and hit one of the people who

were walking. and flew off the curb. it was like, severe. like, hit. >> reporter: police are still investigating why and how it happened. the 40-year-old female driver was treated for minor injuries in the hospital. but police say they don't think she was under the influence. in san francisco, emily turner, kpix5. >> it is also unclear whether the truck may have had some sort of mechanical problem. accomplice are investigating. a woman died today crossing international avenue in oakland. a car hit her in a crosswalk at 8:00 this morning. the driver stayed at the scene. police don't think alcohol or drugs were a factor. and two drivers are recovering tonight after a nasty crash on oakland skyline boulevard. one of the cars ended up rolling off the cliff and hitting a tree. took the rescue crews 20 minutes to free the drivers. the drivers are both expected to be okay. >> police in rohnert park want

you to take a close look at this man. 44-year-old sipriano valasquez. he was last seen running toward copeland creek with the gun in his hand. police are still looking for him tonight and the victim is expected to survive. police in concord are investigating a murder after fining a man shot to death in the street. it happened late last night at monument boulevard and ericson road. he was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators don't have any idea who shot him or why. but if you saw anything, concord police ask you to give them a call. >> and we have dramatic new images from the mali hotel attack that killed an american aide worker. video from inside the radisson blu shows what the people

inside were doing to survive. among the victims, anita datar of maryland. the former peace corp. volunteer was the mother of a young son. her brother is a pediatrician at ucsf medical center. in a statement, he said we are devastated that anita is gone. it is unbelievable to us that she has been killed in this senseless act of violence in terrorism. an al-qaeda linked jihadi group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. meanwhile, it is just after 8:00 in morning in belgium and the capital brussels remains on high alert. soldiers are on guard across the city after warnings of a paris style terror attack. there are paris everywhere there this morning. armored vehicles in the streets. cafes urged to close early saturday night. people still went out. reporters on the ground say the

tension is palpable. >> you can see the police officers behind me. they have been looking into every single passing vehicle with flash flights trying to get an identity check on the drivers and the passengers. even the public transport vehicles. the buses, the taxis. there is definitely a sense of heightened security here. >> investigators think one of the suspects from the paris attacks may be hiding out in brussels. also tonight, we are getting our first look inside the apartment where the suspected master mind of the paris terror attacks died in an hours long shootout with police. walls peppered with bullet holes indicated the intensity of the cross fire. two others including a cousin of the alleged ring leader also died in wednesday's raid after one of the suspects detonated a suicide vest. u.s. national security officials admit as many as three of the paris attackers would have been able to slip through u.s. watch lists and

travel here on visas. that is heating up the campaign debate on how to handle the syrian refugee crisis. >> reporter: donald trump called for a data base to monitor syrian refugee. >> i want a data base for people coming in. >> reporter: an attempt to clarify where he stands after last week's endorsement of a mandatory registry for muslims living in the u.s. >> here is the story. i want surveillance of these people. >> reporter: several of trump's rivals have said the idea of a national data base to track muslims was a bridge too far, but many gop hopefuls have contributed to the antirefugee

sentiments. john kasich as well. evangelicals are a key demographic in the republican primaries. >> there is panic being fed for political reasons. i again, certainly, i think those who imagine it would say we should suspend the arrival of any syrians into this country or any muslim into this country is really over the top. >> reporter: but a recent survey from the public religion research institute showed 73% of white evangelical protestants say islam is at odd with american values. now, this week, a bill that would make it all but impossible for syrian refugees to resettle in the u.s. sailed through the republican led house. @ obama has promised a veto. it is game over for colin kaepernick at least for this season. the team announced he is out for the rest of the year and quite possibly done with the

49ers. kaepernick has opted to have season ending surgery on his left shoulder. he injured it in week four against the green bay packers. he will need at least four month to recover. the team has until april to decide whether to trade him, release him, or keep him on next season. the 49ers drafted him in 2011. he took over for alex smith the following season leading the team all the way to superbowl 47. last year, the niners made it to the championship and signed kaepernick to a six year $126 million contract. but the team won't have to pay him anything after this season if they cut him as long as he is healthy enough to pass a physical. mark zuckerberg is due to become a father any day now. but that is not what brought the facebook ceo to sf general today. he was there to cut the ribbon on the hospital's new acute care and trauma center. it is named for zuckerberg and

his wife pricilla. they donated $75 million to fund the project. >> anything people can do in their lives relies on them being healthy. it is what allows us to think and dream and work toward the better futures we all want to create. so, we support this hospital because we believe that good health should not be something that is out of anyone's reach. >> the couple's doelation is the largest single gift the hospital's fund raising foundation has ever received. a small bay area city is battling big businesses. mark kelly has the story about keeping chain storing out of san carlos. >> reporter: sonya's apparel has called downtown san carlos home for years but the owner sonya is worried chain stores are taking over the small businesses. >> they can go to the malls. >> reporter: here in the downtown historic core, they are already winning.

the 2016 cadillac srx. get this low-mileage lease from around $339 per month, or purchase with 0% apr financing. several people recovering we displaced from their homes a fire broke out on the 50- floor of one of chicago's >> five people were hurt, several others were displaced from their homes when a fire broke out from the 50th floor of chicago's skyscraper, the hancock center. that unit was destroyed. the rest of the floor had to be evacuated. investigators say the cause of the fire appear to be accidental. and all of the people who were injured are expected to be okay. back here in california, a four month old baby was one of six people rescued from this burning sailboat off venice beach. it sent up a plume of black smoke. the 35-foot vessel was offshore at the time but nobody was hurt. it is unclear what caused the

fire. tonight, california is the latest state with a case of e. coli linked to chipotle. most of the cases have been in the northwest until now. ohio and new york are reporting people getting sick after eating at the high end burrito chain. so far, the source of the contamination is unclear but the cdc says it likely wasn't the meat since some of the people who got sick are vegetarians. >> i think the pattern of this outbreak is highly suggestive that there is a single contaminated ingredient that went to all the restaurant locations. >> at least 16 people have been hospitalized. but no one has died. this is at least the fourth health outbreak linked to chipotle this year. this might be the laziest taco bell run ever. valet parking is available at one restaurant in walnut creek. you heard that right. there is is a big renovation going on at the encina grande

shopping center. to keep people from driving around the parking lot hunting for spots, they decided to offer free valet service. there is no word on whether it will continue once the construction is done. pay your taxes or lose your passport. that's the threat under a new highway bill working its way through congress. it includes a provision to deny or revoke passports for people owing 50,000 or more in back taxes. if enacted it would take effect on january 1. it is estimated it could raise about $400 million over the first ten years. apple's got a hit with something it did more than 20 years ago. paired a stylis with a pad. there is a four week wait on the apple website. so, the pencils are listed for hundreds more on ebay. that pencil was designed to be used with the company's new ipad pro. the same sort of thing the mutant message pad could do all

the way back in the 1990s . mine still works. the number of americans 65 and older is expected to double over the next few decades. and tonight, silicon valley is working overtime to keep up with our aging bodies. that may include replacing our aging organs. allen martin got a look at the future of bio printing. >> reporter: 3d printers can print parts for planes, athletic shoes, even prescription drugs. but now, the technology is being used to try to print life. >> i'm so excited. >> reporter: at a technology incubator in palo alto, swedish professor paul gotenholbm is exploring the future. it is a 3dbio printer designed to print out human tissues and soft organs using a special

ink. it contains a special biological sauce, living human cells that are mixed with a liquid that allows the cell to thrive. >> we have been working with it a couple of years. >> reporter: he printed out a couple of ears for us. >> we are able to make the things that you are not able to make before. >> reporter: the hope, that it may one day supply replacement kidneys, livers, even hearts to patients by using the patient's own cells. he explains while we are living longer our organs and tissues are not programmed to last forever. >> it is going to be huge need of replacement parts for bodies. >> reporter: they need to figure out how to keep the organs alived once they are printed so they can be transplanted but he is excited and sees a vast new market. >> people are wealthy. they have a lot of money. and they need to have an organ

40s . for highs. inland. it will happen on wednesday tonight. high clouds filtering into the northern part of the state. no rain. we will get clouds coming in time to time in the bay area. as we have high pressure over the west coast one more day. so tomorrow looks nice. not quite as warm as it was today. a few more high clouds tomorrow. but very pleasant for sunday. an then, temperatures are going to collapse on tuesday and wednesday. we also get a chance of showers with all that cold air coming in over the bay area. not much in the way of rain. at most, we would get half an inch spread over two days but most locations less than that. again, that is tuesday and wednesday. the real headline will be the cold readings coming into the bay area. so, in the enjoy it while you can tomorrow, put sunday on your calendar. for the futurecast, high clouds are coming in over the north and part of the bay area by 11:00 tomorrow morning and as the day goes on, more high clouds come in. the predominant feel willing be mostly sunny skies. and here is how we sum it up.

santa clara. colin kaepernick's season is over and we may have seen the last of him in the red and gold. he was listed as probable for this weekend's game against the seahawks. now, he has been placed on season ending injury reserve. and will undergo a surgery to repair a tear in his shoulder. he has been playing through the injury. undrafted rookie dylan thompson will be the backup quarterback. to college football, these guys here? well, they know that the guys in for the big game, it was 11th ranked stanford. it was all christian mcaffrey. he was just amazing in the game. he had a lot of all purpose yards. he is a heisman candidate. stanford was up. and then mcaffrey, 386 all

purpose yards in the game. the cardinal went up 21-6. they ended up winning 33-22. now, the oregon team needed to beat usc today. the snap is low. the ducks recover. usc was only down ten at that point. but on the very next play, vernon adams, carington grabs the 17-yard touchdown. with the cardinal win, the cardinals have clinched the past 12 north title. still to come, the sharks going for their fifth straight win and an upset that shakes up the college football playoff picture. we'll be right back after this. ,,,,,,
