to take. good evening, i'm brian hac. . protective barriers scatter like dominoes, as a bus barrels by. the important safety step nobody bothered to take. >> investigators are trying to figure out what sent this tour bus barreling through city streets, sending orange barrels scattering. the driver says the brakes failed. on friday, we learned the bus shouldn't have been on the road. the chp never inspected it because the owners never registered the bus with the state. meanwhile, there's another development tonight. kpix 5's mark kelly found out a construction company is also in trouble with the city. >> reporter: large orange rails meant to protect drivers turned into dangerous projectiles when the tour bus barreled through them. these rails should have been

filled with water, but public works spokesman says many were bone dry. >> some had water in them. some didn't have water in them. it was a mixed bag. >> reporter: also a mixed bag, who's to blame? we've learned it's the contractor's job to fill the rails with water, but public works, as the inspector, failed to do its job, too, and catch the problem. today, gordon says that changes. >> here on in, we're going to make sure that our inspectors from san francisco public works go out and make sure those rails, the barriers, are going to be filled with water. >> reporter: but public works is going to have a lot of inspecting to do. here at a different construction site in san francisco, we found similar rails, but take a look inside. there's water in there, but it's not filled to the top. partially killed rails here at 1st and mission, as well as at a construction site along upper market, and near 8th and soma, no water at all. the same for these near fremont

and full sum. >> depends on the situation. >> reporter: in union square where the bus crashed, the rails should have had water inside and public works has told the contractor to fix it. in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> we reached out to the contractor, digney york, based in virginia. we have not heard back. we are following breaking news in berkeley. flames are shooting through the roof of this apartment building on dwight way. it's not far from the cal campus. right now, there's no word on any injuries. we have a crew on the way. we will bring you any new information as soon as we get it. we're going to take a look outside at the last balmy weekend in the bay area for what may be a while because a cool change is on the way. a cold low will plunge south from alaska on tuesday. temps will come down, so will a little bit of rain. thanksgiving looks cool and dry. we'll have the complete details, coming up on what's in store when we cover the forecast in just a few minutes. for the cold snap, san

francisco's making sure that everybody has a warm place to stay. kpix 5's maria medina tells us the city's winter shelter opens tonight. >> happy to have someplace to go. very happy. >> reporter: reginald dillard, sr. is number 5 on the list to stay here at st. bonifays church tonight instead of sleeping on the street. >> better than being outside in the elements. >> reporter: he holds a part- time job, but says finding a place he can afford in the city is nearly impossible. >> i'm on every list in town to get a one-bedroom place with a kitchen and a bathroom. >> reporter: so while he waits for that call from a landlord, his mission every night is to find somewhere to sleep. >> sit on the sidewalk and i wait and i wait and i wait. >> reporter: reginald is lucky to be on that list. the line to get inside st. bonifays is long tonight. he and 59 others will get a bed inside the church on golden gate for the next seven nights, as well as two meals a day. >> with so many people on the

streets, to be able to have a place for them to get dry and to be sheltered is pretty significant. >> reporter: michael pappas says several congregations are working together to feed and shelter the homeless this winter, especially in preparation for el nino. for dozens, it's a temporary shelter they are grateful for, while some like reginald wait for something better. >> somebody with a little compassion built something. >> reporter: several other churches will open doors next month. each church can house between 60 to 100 people. the program ends in february. in san francisco, maria medina, kpix 5. more than 150,000 travelers pass through sfo on friday after thanksgiving alone. there will be plenty more over the next few days. if you're flying out for thanksgiving, be sure to give yourself plenty of time.

>> 90 minutes for domestic flight. minimum two hours for international flight. think about what you can do to save yourself time before getting to the airport. >> that includes checking in and paying baggage fees online. sfo expects 3.2 million travelers to pass through the expert between now and january. a southwest airlines flight bound for los angeles had to be diverted today to kansas city because of some unruly passengers. the plane was headed to california from indianapolis when the crew says a few passengers became disruptive. cell phone video captured the scene inside the cabin, as four passengers were escorted off. >> people are a little on edge with everything going on, but, but in this case, fortunately everything worked out great. >> we didn't think anything was wrong. we thought maybe something was wrong with the airplane. we didn't think anything was wrong until they escorted the four gentlemen off. >> police questioned the passengers, but they did not arrest any of them. still to come, how a california professor turned a

. talk about a college road trip, students got a real life lesson in geology today on a road that's buckling under the force of a slow-moving landslide. the road is near santa clarita. it looks like a massive earthquake rocked the region, but the real source is just uphill. a geology professor from ucla took his students on the roda to check it out. >> there was no rain storm that triggered this, no big earthquake that triggered this. >> we can build all these buildings, but the earth does what it does. it's put things into perspective on our place in the world really. >> drivers first reported the road giving way on thursday. the damage now stretches for about 200 feet. the road will be closed indefinitely. well, i want to know what's making it happen! it's not an earthquake, but earthquakes are the subject of this story. what a difference a year makes, or in this case, 15 months. the church in napa just held its first sunday service since last year's 6.0 quake left it

heavily damaged. john ramos was there as the congregation reunited today. ♪ >> reporter: at the napa methodist church this morning, the welcomes were just a little bit warmer. the music, a little bit sweeter. that's because these people weren't just going to church. they were coming home. >> there's christmas and easter and then days like this come about. ♪ >> reporter: this was the day the church reopened after being rocked 15 months ago by the napa earthquake. the building became an area of severe danger, as its front separated from the roof and threatened to crash into the street and it didn't fare much better inside, with much of the ceiling's plaster coming down. >> had the earthquake struck while people would have been in here, many would have been injured, some may have died. >> reporter: at today's service, the congregation sat quietly, as they reviewed the damage and the efforts to rebuild. the complete renovation cost more than $2 million, with an

amazing attention to detail. for example, a special lime wash had to be applied to the new plaster to recapture the acoustics the building had become famous for. ♪ >> it's important. you know, little things like that make a huge difference in the way people sing and the way they hear themselves sing. ♪ >> reporter: as they sing together, their friendship made stronger by their common struggle, it becomes clear that for this group, the earthquake was a blessing in disguise. >> even on the very day of the earthquake, and i'm looking around and i'm thinking, i just know something great is going to come out of this. >> reporter: finally, perched on a back corner pew was a lone cowboy hat, a tribute to a long- time member who died while the church was out of commission. it was a reminder that a church isn't a building at all, but rather the people who meet here to call this place home. in napa, john ramos, kpix 5.

point a few days ago. researchers and rescuers are still searching for it tonight in hopes of saving it. and a red panda that escaped from a northern california zoo has been found safe and sound. she disappeared three days ago from the sequoia park. zoo keepers say someone saw the panda walking around half mile from the zoo's entrance today. the person chase the panda up a small fruit tree and kept an eye on her until zoo staff arrived. they lured her back down the 10- foot tree with food. veterinarians will give her a full checkup tomorrow, but she seems to be okay. a happy ending there. we've got temperatures that are going to be dropping like a rock come tuesday and wednesday in the bay area. came down a little bit today. we've been above average for a few days. yesterday, set a record in oakland with 74 degrees. today, not quite that warm, but still not too bad. right now, the numbers are centered around the low 60s for the most part.

60 at concord, 63 in san jose. 58 in oakland, under fair skies. clouds in oakland, partly cloudy skies up in santa rosa. to revisit this, cooler tomorrow, but the big change comes in on tuesday and wednesday when it gets windy. gusty winds with this front that's coming in. not a lot of rain, maybe a quarter of an inch. but you know what could be a surprise? it's cold enough so that by wednesday afternoon, wednesday evening, diablo, hamilton might have a little mantle of snow. what do you know, snow in the bay area? at least up top. that's tuesday and wednesday. we'll see. meantime, tomorrow's dry. so is thanksgiving, cool, but dry. all the rain will head out by later on wednesday. and the forecast highs just have a look at where we were on saturday. livermore is at 68. there's the record in oakland at 74 degrees. by midweek, temperature highs, only 48. these are highs in livermore. 57 at oakland.

numbers are coming down by midweek. significant cooling change in the bay area between now and wednesday. satellite map shows we've got high clouds for northern california. clouds, but no rain. we'll sao some clouds from time to time tomorrow, just as we did today. future cast shows low clouds spilling into the bay area. by 7:00 tomorrow morning, cloudier day in the north bay tomorrow than we've seen lately. also, the clouds spill across the east bay shoreline. by midday, we get sunshine and low clouds come back in tomorrow night. tomorrow's just the ebb and flow of the low clouds. tuesday, we begin to get wet. big chill on the way then. highs in the 40s in the coolest places inland midweek. rain chances for tuesday and wednesday, not much, but fairly widespread. then cool and dry for thanksgiving day. we'll emphasize that by showing that to you again in just a moment. overnight lows tonight, 42 in santa rosa. 45 at fairfield. 40s will do it. sunrise tomorrow morning, 6:58 a.m. finally, the numbers come back to below normal in some places tomorrow. we're about where we should be

really. san francisco, 58. concord, 63. same for san jose and oakland, just about the same. so low 60s for much of the bay area, including the south bay, where sunnyvale comes in at 65 tomorrow. over by the shoreline, we'll be in the mid to upper 50s. east bay, sunshine, mixed in with high clouds. low clouds to begin the day. and the numbers will be in the low to mid-60s. north bay looks nice with low clouds to start the day. then numbers finish in the low 60s, so chillier tomorrow than it was today. and the same will hold true for ukiah and clover dale and lakeport. for thursday, thanksgiving, even though wednesday we'll have a lingering shower or two wednesday morning, much of late wednesday will be dry. thanksgiving looks dry. it will be bundle-up time. but thanksgiving and a heat wave, it just doesn't feel right. this will feel right. temperatures on thursday, the upper 40s inland and mid-40s around the bay. next weekend, clouds move in,

lions still led 9-7. smith has been suspended for the year, right? but the raiders sacked matt stafford four times today. the raiders put together enough offense, this from 48 yards out, also hit a 56-yarder and the raiders led 13-9. same score, fourth quarter. stafford could not find an open receiver, so he took off. nothing but green turf in front of him, 18 yards down the sidelines. he gets to the 5-yard line. now, check out this formation. you got four receivers at the bottom of your screen. that freed up the middle of the field and stafford just walked in. a 16-13 lead. later in the fourth, raiders backed up in the shadow of their end zone. carr did complete the pass to mychal rivera on 3rd down, but holding was called on donald penn in the end zone. that is the safety. two huge holding calls on that drive. lions up 18-13. and cooter called on his runningback to ice the game. joey bell runs to the goal
