morning, president obama says the u.s. government is taking every possible step to keep the country safe going into the holiday season. his comments come as the terror group isis promises more strikes in the wake of this month's paris attacks. but the president said americans should feel safe knowing every precaution is being taken to keep the country safe. >> so as americans travel this weekend to be with their loved ones, i want them to know that our counter-terrorism intelligence, homeland security and law enforcement professionals at every level are working overtime. >> president obama also said u.s. forces are continuing to attack isis with a 2-pronged approach including air strikes and securing u.s. borders. millions of travelers will be taking their planes, trains and automobiles today and with the recent attacks in paris and threats to the u.s. security of course is going to be tight. kpix 5's keit do finds out what you need to know. >> reporter: 47 million

americans will travel more than 50 miles this holiday weekend. that's the highest number since 2007 before the recession began. this as all u.s. airports are officially on heightened alert. on one of the busiest travels days. year there are visible signed -- days of the year, there are visible signs of stepped up security. >> personally, it doesn't bother me too much. >> reporter: major airports, the tsa agents have been told to take their time while screening bags. at l.a.x., heavily armed officers patrol the terminals. paul flew in from paris to dc tuesday. >> it was nice to see. it gave me a better feeling of being protected. >> reporter: a new intelligence bulletin sent to law enforcement around the country warns there could be copycats in the u.s. looking to replicate the paris attacks. congressman eric swalwell says the warning should not stop you from traveling. >> if we stopped doing, you

sierra today. in the valley chilly temperatures topping out in the 50s as well as the bay area and northern california. here's the tahoe forecast in the high country. showers today, mostly cloudy tomorrow, plenty of snow on the ground if you are hitting the slopes this thanksgiving. heading out of town sfo today partly cloudy winds northwest five to 15. so shouldn't see any travel we related delays today at sfo. i have your national forecast and the extended forecast coming up. new at noon police in fremont are investigating a deadly accident involving a pedestrian. it happened this morning around 6:40 on fremont boulevard in warm springs. when officers arrived they found a man lying on the shoulder of the road with critical injuries. he was rushed to the hospital but died at the hospital. the driver left the scene but returned and is cooperating with them. if you witnessed the accident, contact police. berkeley police are looking for the person who opened fire on a car with two women and

child inside. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec with more on the latest shooting along interstate 80. >> reporter: this is the third shooting on the stretch of 880 in just the past month. last night's shooting happened here on this stretch behind me between ashby and university avenue in berkeley. it was 10:15 p.m. somebody shot out the passenger side of a window of a car going eastbound. >> we have a fortunate family. the glass shattered and hit them. >> reporter: there were two women in the front and boy in the back. the front passenger was injured but is expected to survive. officers say at first they didn't even know their car had been shot. >> from their vantage point, they notice the glass shatter and they thought maybe they had gotten into some type of collision and that's why they pulled off the road. >> reporter: officers are investigating whether last night's shooting might be related to two other shootings

along i-80 earlier this month. on november 2 a man was found with gunshot wounds in his car. he survived. november 10, a man was shot and killed in pinole. a woman passenger was injured. those shootings were targeted and could be connected. but last night's shooting appears to be random. >> the case is under investigation. we are working with the highway patrol. if anyone has any information about this incident, contact their homicide unit. >> reporter: police say that road rage does not appear to be a factor in last night's shooting. live in berkeley, anne makovec, kpix 5. a man will be arraigned in a santa rosa courtroom this afternoon in connection with a stabbing death of his parents. 34-year-old nathan alexander wilson was arrested monday in mendocino county after his parents were found dead in their home near sebastopol. wilson is not expected to enter a plea in the case today.

the murder of an oakland artist has been traced to a gun stolen from a federal agent. investigators say the gun used to kill antonio ramos was stolen from a federal immigration agent in san francisco. authorities say marquise holloway admitted to shooting ramos the artist painted in oakland. holloway says it was an accident. investigators say holloway has a long rap sheet. >> he predominantly hangs around west oakland, is a associated of another gang that we're very familiar with the ghost town gang, uhm. he has been identified in several street level robberies. >> yesterday in court holloway and his supporters lashed out at the judge. holloway was also charged with a string of unrelated robberies and robbery attempts including one that happened less than an hour before ramos was killed. this afternoon there will be a rally to demand that charges be dropped against a group of activists. the black friday 14 blocked a

bart train for several hours on the day after thanksgiving last year. they were advocating for "black lives matter." the district attorney is going to bring criminal charges. the fate of a waterfront housing development is in the hands of richmond voters. the city council voted last night to put the controversial issue on the june 2016 ballot. if approved, the project would be built on property in the city's marina bay neighborhood. the plan calls for 59 single- family homes. critics say that goes against the city's general plan which envisions dense housing and retail. california lawmakers are ready to declare a state of disaster over dungest crab. the season is delayed due to high levels of neurotoxins in the crab. representatives say the secretary of commerce should compensate fishermen and businesses if crab season is canceled. outrage in chicago. up next, protestors storm the streets after dashcam video is

clashed with police into the early morning and they blocked intersection after intersection. the chaos erupted hours after authorities released this gruesome dashcam footage showing the 17-year-old being riddled with bullets from officer jason van dyke's weapon. >> boom, boom, boom, boom, boom! his body dead. that's it. that's ridiculous! >> reporter: the silent video shows van dyke continued to shoot the teen as he lay on the ground. >> he made a split-second decision based upon his perception and his training. >> reporter: many are wondering why it took prosecutors 13 months to file murder charges against the officer. >> when we investigate police shootings it's not like one civilian shooting another. it's much more complex and involved. it is not at all unusual for these types of investigations to take up to 20 months. >> reporter: chicago mayor rahm emanuel hopes the charges will help mend a rift between the police department and some community members. >> i believe this is a moment

opening up early. according to supervisor mike wasserman, for homeless families having a place to go could be a matter of life or death. a shelter in san jose hopes to help its guests find permanent homes this winter. with the cold weather comes the king tides. if you walked on the embarcadero, you probably noticed the high water there. right now water is lapping up on pier 14. more of these king tides are expected tomorrow. a fresh coat of powder in the sierra just in time for the holiday weekend. here's how it looked in truckee last night. more snow is expected today. right now chains are required if you are going on 80 from kingvale to the nevada state line and towards south lake tahoe on u.s. 50 chains required from twin bridges to lake level at meyers. of course, much nicer here with that rain bringing blue skies. we had snow of our own. i'm going to show you that. first i want to talk about cold temperatures. part of the reason we saw some of that snow here locally.

we'll check in with our weather watchers, starting off in novat 55 degrees from dana. 48 degrees right now from bill moon here in orinda. so definitely a chilly start chilly midday. and let's take a look at some of the chilly temperatures. as we take a look on mount hamilton, yes, a little dusting of snow right here on our own mount hamilton. more than a dusting up in the high country. i can't tell you how many people i have heard from lately saying, when are we going to get snow? we have had so many bad seasons. this is it, folks. you finally got your snow. here's the temperatures locally. blue skies over coit tower. 52 concord, oakland, 50 in san francisco. what to expect throughout the day if you are staying here close to home, well, grab a jacket as you head out the door because it is going to be chilly. sun and clouds today. breezy and cool. now, we have some cold nights ahead of us.

in fact, freezing temperatures inland. friday morning looks like it's going to be the coldest point of the week so these temperatures do stick with us here for a couple of days. what to expect from the satellite perspective? showers we saw pass through now moving to the east. we do have cold temperatures moving in, in its place and we are going to stay cold for a while. no airport delays related to the weather at sfo. partly cloudy with light winds there. elsewhere, really areawide national forecast looking good as far as travel goes. we have a chance of showers in dallas but overall good travel conditions at major airports. sunset tonight 4:54. freezing temperatures in some areas at sun-up tomorrow. high temperatures in the area 50s. pretty much the coldest we have seen so far this season. 52 redwood city. 54 high today in san jose. overnight tonight, even colder as you can see some freezing

temperatures napa 32. 36 redwood city. 37 san jose. 32 fairfield. 31 santa rosa. so keep that in mind if you have outdoor pets. extended forecast shows we stay dry through the thanksgiving weekend. we see some rain return early next week. but the main weather headline for thanksgiving and into the weekend is cold and, in fact, freezing overnight tonight and then a little bit more rain early next week. so some exciting stuff there for you. >> it is exciting. >> it's been a while. retailers hoping for a pile of profit on black friday may be setting themselves up for a little disappointment. u.s. commerce department says the savings rate in the u.s. rose to 5.6% in october. it's at its highest mark in three years. americans put aside an extra $40 billion in october rather than spend it. but the economy performed better than expected in that 3rd quarter. trends are showing americans are spending their money. they are just being careful about it. >> i wish i were more careful about it.

six other states have been sickened... by e coli contamination, linked to co stores. investigators say the common 's rotisserie 19 people in california and six other states have been sickened by e. coli contamination linked to costco. the link is rotisserie chicken salad. nobody died but five people are hospitalized, two have kidney failure. anyone who has bought chicken salad at any u.s. costco store on or before friday is advised to toss it out. a bay area company is joining a movement to deliver produce to your door at a low price. and you won't ever see this produce on store shelves. an emeryville company called imperfect is selling grocery store reject fruits and vegetables. the ceo says it's what's inside that counts. >> there's so much more going to waste and there's no market for it because it doesn't meet the grocery store standards.
