your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. police surround and evacuat urgent care facility. good evening, i breaking news on the peninsula. a manhunt for a murder suspect. police surround and evacuate an urgent care facility. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. it's the sutter health san carlos urgent care center on industrial road that's been evacuated. police think the suspect is somewhere in the area or may be hiding inside the clinic. this is a live look at the area. police have blocked off several streets around the clinic. they brought in a s.w.a.t. team. it all started this morning in san mateo when police responded to a report of a stabbing on b street. it turns out it was the girlfriend of the man on the run who had been stabbed. she died. the suspect drove to san carlos

where he hit a car and fled. police think he is in the area somewhere and he may be inside the urgent care center. >> the suspect in this case is a 22-year-old male resident with various addresses on the peninsula and we are actively looking for him. >> police say they have been to the house in san mateo several times on domestic violence calls. police consider the suspect dangerous and may still have a weapon in his possession. we'll follow the story bring you updates as soon as we get them. tonight we are learning more about the suspected planned parenthood gunman. 57-year-old robert lewis dear is described as a loner who lived in a shack in the mountains of north carolina. authorities still trying to figure out what sent him on a shooting rampage. among the three people killed, university of colorado police officer garrett swasey. he was 44. swasey was rushed to the crime scene to help a city officer facing gunfire. he leaves behind a wife and two

children. and we are also learning more about the shooting. it happened inside a colorado springs planned parenthood facility yesterday. david begnaud reports. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: mourners wiped away tears during a vigil for victims of friday's deadly shooting rampage at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs. this woman oversees the center. >> what happened yesterday was a terrible crime resulting in a terrible tragedy and we will never forget it. >> reporter: police say robert lewis dear walked into the clinic and opened fire. patients and staff dodged bullets by hiding underneath furniture. >> i saw a gun, shooting. >> reporter: this person was sitting in his car and came face to face with the shooter. >> i saw myself in the mirror and it's like my god. he was aiming for my head. >> reporter: university of colorado police officer garrett

swasey was shot and killed along with two other civilians. [ screaming ] >> reporter: when it was all over, nine people were wounded including five police officers. today police searched the suspect's property in north carolina. his neighbors say he was a loner. david begnaud, cbs news, colorado springs. >> and dear is being held without bond. his first court appearance is monday. crews have been working all day to repair a 16" water pipe in lafayette. it ruptured on release station road yesterday afternoon. it sent water cascading down the street for hours flooding yards and homes. and we just got off the phone with ebmud and the water is expected to be turned back on tonight. markellly shows us the very old -- mark kelly shows us the very old 30 pipe that knocked out service to customers. >> reporter: scraping up mud after last night's water main break flooded the neighborhood. >> i stopped and talked to one

neighbor and she said the water main burst up the street. like oh, my goodness. >> reporter: the gushing water even buckled this road. a 16" cast iron by the put in the ground in 1949 broke last night. >> it split for 15 feet. there's a 15-foot split in this pipe. >> reporter: east bay m.u.d. still doesn't know what caused the split. it could be anything from seismic activity this weekend's cold snap or the pipe was just too old. >> cast iron pipe is the oldest pipe in the ground and we see it breaking all around the service area all over the east bay area. >> reporter: that's not what debbie hunter wants to hear. these sandbags were her yard's only protection from the flooding. >> this never happened before, never. it just -- it -- it -- it flowed from the top here raging. >> reporter: even on this holiday weekend east bay m.u.d. will have crews working through the night. >> it's a significant break so

it will take some time. >> reporter: especially repaving the road. but some are fast losing patience. >> we need our infrastructure fixed! that's the most important thing. or else people are going to lose their homes. >> reporter: in lafayette, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> the replacement pipe will not be cast iron. it will be a pvc pipe. that should survive the cold night we have in store. freeze warnings are in effect again with temperatures as low as 26 degrees in some of the wind-protected valleys. tonight santa rosa will be all the way down to 28. concord 27 degrees. san jose 33. we'll begin to warm up again monday. but then rain chances return to the bay area by late next week. we'll have all the details when we cover the forecast in just a few minutes. well, a stranded babydol fin is now in the care of wildlife experts in monterey county. the dolphin was first spotted off alcorn slough preserve yesterday.

it apparently separated from its mother and got stuck in the mud. rescuers pulled the dolphin to safety this morning and took it to the marine mammal center at moss landing. veterinarians say prognosis for survival, though, is not good. a grisly discovery in san leandro. a woman's body found in a burning car and police are calling it a homicide. the burning car was discovered last night at 8:00 on marshall street. fire crews found the body after they put out the fire. no word yet on who she is and police are looking for a motive. a vegetable recall blamed for an e. coli outbreak is expanding to raley's. they have pulled items from the deli case made from celery and onions. the products include salad kits, potato salad and rotisserie chicken salad. the action comes after e. coli was traced to tailor farms in tracy. raley's says the products have use by date ranging from november 20 to december 3. a number of other stores including safeway and costco

they're now hanging out whe how many of us have seen a real mink on the move. kpix 5's don ford found out they are now hanging out where no one expected, in the delta. >> reporter: it was a mystery when rangers at big break regional park reviewed infrared game camera images. they weren't sure what they saw. >> did some research and american mink. >> reporter: a mink. >> a mink, american mink. >> reporter: not endangered, not threatened. but not seen around here very much either. no one knows how many or even how they got here in the first place. they have created a lot of attention. >> i'm excited to see one. >> i might have seen a mink. >> i heard he was swimming in the delta. >> reporter: think we'll see one today? >> my guess is no. >> reporter: one visitor did see a mink and took these photos as it attacked a

squirrel in broad daylight. minks are carnivorous. they eat fish, frogs and small mammals. and like the famous beavers of downtown martinez, these minks seem to have moved in. >> you're a mink, this is a great place to live. >> reporter: with all this talk about minks, you're probably wondering like me how many of these does it take to make a full length mink coat? about 40. they don't have that many here. in oakley, don ford, kpix 5. an unexpected discovery near the napa river has put a crimp in the plans to restore that waterway. workers found remains of a native american tribe. now the county has to decide what they are going to do. $21million project aims to restore nine miles of the river with plants and floodplains. so far supervisors have set aside about a quarter million dollars to have a look at and preserve the remains and survey nearby areas. still to come, diamonds are a girl's best friend but get this: this one is so big, they can't put a price on it. >> and speaking of ice, the

got into the small business saturday spirit today. he and his daughters hit up a local bookstore in washington. the president walked away with a bag full of books. small business saturday is a drive by american express that's all about supporting locally owned businesses. a diamond so big you have to see it to believe it. the 1100-plus-carat is the biggest diamond unearthed in a century. it was discovered in south africa about the size of a tennis ball. it's considered to be the world's second largest diamond. the canadian mining company that found it can't even put a value on it because it's too big for computer analysis. experts say the gem is worth about $66 million. and chocolate maker reeses attempted to get in the holiday spirit by offering a christmas tree version of their traditional peanut butter treats but their vision didn't come to life. twitter was abuzz with photos

from disappointed consumers. many pointing out that the holiday treats looked nothing like the christmas tree wrapper implies. even the white chocolate version didn't go without a scathing review. so take a look at this. the epic volcano eruption is happening right now in honolulu. the lava outbreak began wednesday afternoon and it's cascaded down the volcano side since. the lava flow is now a quarter of a mile long. local authorities say the eruption is several miles away from the closest community so no one is in danger. and from fire to ice, an ice storm is gripping much of the nation's midsection. this is in texas where ice is covering street signs, gas stations and roads and highways. an inch of sleet accumulated in a short amount of time. eight people died in a stormy weather in texas since thursday. all right. on to weather now. we are going to be looking at another cold night in the bay area with mostly clear skies

and temperatures about as cold as they were last night. might be a notch or two cooler. still the overnight lows in general will range from 26 to 32 degrees in the coldest spots. right now, not too bad. livermore 49 degrees. as we look at the approach to the bay bridge and folks hoping to make dinner here in the city, make dinner reservations, maybe they are going to make dinner, 51 in santa rosa and san jose, 51. freeze warnings are posted. we'll revisit this and all inland valleys in the bay area likely to freeze tonight. so be sure to protect the plants and the pets and the stray relative outside. here's what's happening. high pressure will begin to build in a little bit just enough to bring temperatures up a notch as that low slowly edges east. so mild beginning on monday. temperatures warm to a maximum in the low 60s on wednesday. then we get another low off the pacific that finally will give us another chance of rain coming in probably wednesday night into the north bay and thursday we could get wet not monumentally so but another chance of rain coming into the

bay. that's later in the week. in the meantime satellite and radar showing not much. a lot of fog if you head into the central valley though because 'tis the season for that tule fog. futurecast is kind of funny to watch. this is actually -- [ laughter ] >> -- this actually is rolling, believe it or not. the left-hand side of the screen the first indication that things are beginning to change. as we get a few high clouds floating in by 5:00 tomorrow night, otherwise it's going to be sunny. so big chill still right through sunday. slightly warmer as we get into monday. and then a chance of rain coming into the bay area by thursday. a number of things to do with in icy weather. this weekend the embarcadero partly cloudy and cool 53 degrees. the union square ice rink with 53 degrees. in san jose downtown ice 55 degrees. down in the south bay looks nice for the ice skaters out there. overnight lows tonight we are going to be looking at 27 degrees at fairfield. 33 for san jose. 30 at mountain view.
