felony hit & run. y. . he's famously known as san francisco's hot cop of the castro. tonight, he is under arrest for felony hit and run.

good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliet goodrich. photos of him on duty were widely shared as the hot cop. he's now accused of slamming into a pair of pedestrians around 2:00 this morning at broadway and montgomery. the two men in their forties were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but are expected to survive. witnesses say the driver took off on foot, but left his dodge charger behind at the scene. officers traced the car back to coors, who was off duty at the time of the crash. at this point, there's no indication that he had been drinking. right now, he is facing two charges of felony hit and run. about an hour ago, we got word he has bailed out of jail. we've reached out to san francisco police for a comment. so far, they have declined. tonight, vandals have made a mess of a san francisco landmark. from the looks of it, it was not easy. kpix 5's maria medina is live

off kearney avenue, where taggers placed their graffiti. >> reporter: you can see the graffiti on the top of the building, on the dome in black and white letters. we shot video for you in the daytime so you could see exactly what it looks like. we'll go to the video now. this is a landmark here in san francisco known as the tower building, or the sentinel tower. this is a tourist attraction. a lot of people come here and take pictures of it. it is owned by francis ford coppola, screen writer, director, known for ""the godfather" movies. here's what people had to say. >> i think it's just unfortunate because they are taking away from something that everyone could be enjoying. they are making a personal statement on something that belongs to all of us. >> a lot of people get in front of the cafe and they take pictures with the building behind them. it's pretty scary. i think it's maybe a little disrespectful. >> reporter: back out here

live, how this person or people got up there and how they did all of this damage, without getting caught, those are the questions tonight. as you saw, there was a fire escape ladder, so that may be an answer there. we put in a call to san francisco police and we have yet to hear from them. live in san francisco, marie in a medina, kpix 5. on the other side of the bay, graffiti with good intentions. gold dragons are popping up and these murals are not to be messed with. >> if you deface a dragon, 18 generations will be cursed. >> we'll have the story of dragon school, tonight at 11:00. levi's stadium today, niners fans made it clear they are fed up with ceo jed york. mark kelly shows us they have launched a unique new campaign to get rid of him. >> reporter: you can create change with a petition or a protest. these niner fans chose a plane.

>> yeah, absolutely expected a reaction from jed about this. >> reporter: before kickoff today, this group of 20- somethings paid to fly this banner over levi's stadium, casting a large shadow of doubt over jed york's ability to lead the team. >> you don't have to respond to tweets, but if you fly a banner over the stadium, it's hard to ignore. >> reporter: the banner reads "jed and the 49ers should mutually part ways," making fun of the phrase jed york used when jim harbaugh left the team. >> they weren't completely transparent in the process. we thought it would be fun to poke fun at him. >> the message was strong and still respectful at the same time. >> reporter: making matters worse for the niners, ticket prices here have been plummeting. >> they are going for $32. they should be getting 90 to $100 for those seats. >> reporter: the 49ers do not want to comment on today's protest, but these fans are confident york is seeing their message loud and clear. >> jed needs to step down from making football decisions.

just sign the paychecks and leave the decisions to the guys that know the game better. >> reporter: at levi's stadium, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> it cost over $1000 to get the message across. the guys used a go fund me account to raise the money. they are already thinking about doing it again with a bigger banner. we're in for another frigid night around the bay area. frost-covered lawns, cars and roof tops in walnut creek this morning. temperature of 34 degrees when the video was taken. even though it was a nice, sunny day, people were bundled up as they strolled through sunnyvale this afternoon. the wintry weather is a great scene-setter for the festival of lights parade in los altos, where daytime highs continue to be about 10 degrees below average. we are looking live downtown, a very festive festival tonight. great floats, great cost stupes. here comes another one. one more last night of freeze warnings still possible at least for temperatures to dip down to 26 in the coldest

valleys. tonight, livermore bottoms out at 31 degrees. same for santa rosa. san jose, 35 degrees. and yet with increasing clouds, we'll have milder weather on monday, maybe even a sprinkle or two tomorrow. tonight will probably be the last night of freeze warnings. we'll have all the details when we cover the weather a few minutes from now. sunnyvale family needs a new place to stay the night after a fire tore through their home. flames were shooting out the side of the house on hollenbeck avenue just after 3:00 this afternoon. no one was hurt, but fire did major damage to the roof and structure of the home. no information on how it started. a man died after he got stuck in a chimney and the homeowner lit a fire. investigators say the owner had no idea a burglar was trapped in the chimney when he tried to warm the place up yesterday. >> he tried to light his fire in his fireplace and heard somebody calling out for help in the chimney. >> the house filled with smoke

as the owner tried to put out the fire. firefighters tore apart the chimney to free the man. by the time they reached him, he was dead. investigators think he had actually been stuck there for at least a day. well, a livermore woman is dead and two men are in the hospital tonight after a high- speed chase and crash. it started around 1:00 a.m. on sycamore valley road near 680 in danville. police say the woman took off when they tried to stop her for driving erratically and ended up smashing into a tree at bollinger canyon road in san ramon. investigators say the mangled white honda was reported stolen out of dublin. two men in the car are in critical condition tonight. this afternoon, the chief described the chase, which lasted about three minutes. >> the pursuit reached about 90 miles an hour on the freeway and in the range of 70 to 80 miles an hour on surface streets before the collision occurred. >> the driver has been identified as 19-year-old hannah meacham. the names of the two passengers have not been released.

danville police say they did find some drugs in the car, but would not elaborate. a little bit of shaking in the south bay today. a small earthquake struck the gilroy area about 12:20 this afternoon, registering 2.8. several people did report feeling it, but of course it was too small to cause any damage. well, still to come, going online versus standing in line. how internet sales are changing our holiday shopping habits. and what mall managers are doing to keep the customers coming in. >> plus, the science of gratitude. how giving thanks this holiday season could actually improve your health, next.

might co . drones are expected to fly off store shelves this holiday season. soon, they might come with new rules. the faa announced its recommendations this week for new safety regulations. they are calling for most drones under 55 pounds to be registered. they also say operators should be over the age of 13. and tourists should have to register their drones before flying them. the hope is to have the registry open up and running by the end of the year. first, it was black friday, then small business saturday. but in-store sales are down this year all because of what's

happening tomorrow. cyber monday. john ramos on the changing psychology of shopping. >> reporter: sun valley mall in concord was surprisingly quiet this morning. maybe it's the hangover from black friday. but then again, something else might be happening here. >> i mean, it's easier to do it online. >> reporter: brenda chavez is part of a growing number of people who do most of their shopping online. >> seeing it in person is a lot better. >> reporter: she often uses the stores as show rooms and will only buy items if she can't find them cheaper on the internet. >> what's going to happen if we all go this route? there won't be stores anymore, will there? >> i know. you still want to do it. it's a weekend type of event you want to do. >> reporter: no shopping center can exist as just a weekend event. so sun valley purposely caters to young people who are constantly online, but also enjoy the social aspects of brick and mortar shopping. >> the savvy retailers realize they have to have a significant presence in both in order to be successful. >> you reinvent yourself,

whether it be marketing, advertising, the stores will still be in existence. >> reporter: retailers try to keep their prices competitive, but they know their real advantage is giving shoppers the chance to see and touch what they are buying. >> on the internet, you could buy it and it might look good on the picture. once you get it, you'll be like, aw, man. >> i still like going to the stores because if you're a kid, you can grab everything and throw it in the basket. >> what's the most fun part of shopping? >> i don't know! >> reporter: if you're still unsure why you should ever shop in a store, consider this. there are certain things you just have to be there to appreciate. in concord, john ramos, kpix 5. >> many cyber monday deals are already online this evening. thanksgiving has come and gone, you probably know. but there's a growing body of evidence that shows it pays to be thankful all year round. neuro scientists at uc berkeley's greater good science centers say grateful people

wi . today is shaping up to be one of the business west travel days of the year. with the long holiday weekend wrapping up, oakland international is expecting to see a nearly 10% jump in travelers this year. travelers we spoke with this evening say it's been smooth sailing so far. >> we wanted a smaller airport so it wasn't so crowded. when i got here, it was really late at night, so there wasn't a lot of people here. had smooth traveling. >> well, the roads are expected to be jammed today and tomorrow. aaa says with gas prices so low, 62% of holiday travelers were expected to drive to and from their thanksgiving destinations.

well, they have been doing it since 1977 when a few merchants got together and said let's do a festival of lights at first street and state street in los altos and it's been going on for however many years that is, since 1977. it sure is looking good -- 38 years? festival of lights tonight, beautiful sight down there. santa claus, the reindeer, and actually balmier conditions than we have had lately with clouds moving into the bay area. as a result, clouds, temperatures should be milder tonight, at least on paper and probably in reality, too. right now, concord at 47 degrees. livermore, 45. san francisco, 54 degrees. santa rosa, upper 40s. couple of things are happening. low pressure is out in the pacific, finally beginning to break down. persistent high has been offshore, so that's why we've got partly to mostly cloudy conditions, a switch from last night. future cast takes it from there, showing us maybe a few light showers by sunrise tomorrow, favoring the north bay. but in terms -- you can see as the day goes on we have more

clouds tomorrow. so it will be a milder monday. it shouldn't get as cold tonight, but there's still freeze warnings posted through 9:00 tomorrow, from 26 degrees to about 32 in the coldest inland valleys. have care with plants and pets. high pressure will get nudged over toward the shoreline and it brings us mild weather. more of a southerly flow. then the rain as the high gets pushed entirely aside will move in on thursday. between now and then, a little gentle warming trend. the warmest day of the week will be wednesday. to sum it up, clouds increase. a few sprinkles favoring the north bay tomorrow. more clouds certainly than we've had over the weekend. milder on monday through wednesday. a little more sun comes out tuesday and wednesday. then a chance of rain coming into the bay area on thursday. about quarter of an inch to half an inch in the bay area. heading out of the bay, you'll find fog in the central valley.

tis the season for that. overnight lows tonight, let's revisit this. 31 in santa rosa, same for livermore. 36 at fairfield. 34 in redwood city. for tomorrow, we will be still a few degrees below average, but each day, monday, tuesday, wednesday, creeping closer back to average. we'll be there by wednesday. in the extended forecast, we're going to be looking for mostly cloudy day tomorrow, a few sprinkles around the bay area. then clearing it out for tuesday and wednesday, partly cloudy skies. thursday comes the rain. again, quarter to half an inch of rain. by the weekend, more sunshine coming out and generally good news. i don't know if vern has generally good news in sports. yeah, good news. we'll increase the temperature over here. let's warm it up. nfl sunday, week 12 contenders, pretenders, snap, the whistle. raiders and 49ers got after it today. what did they get for their efforts? stick around. you just might be surprised. ,,,,
