overturned dumping tons of debris on highway 101. hi,everyone. good afternoon. i'm frank mallicoat. michelle is on assignment. that accident happened around 10 a.m. on silver avenue near highway 101 southbound lanes of the highway in san francisco are now shut down. kpix 55's jackie ward is live -- kpix 5's jackie ward is live at the scene weather very latest. jackie? >> reporter: behind me, frank, is where all these accidents ended. they were caused by a single dump truck. take a look. the truck was uprighted a little bit ago. despite the destruction, veteran police officers say it could have been worse. it all started around 8:50 a.m. when a truck traveling eastbound on silver avenue lost control according to eyewitnesses. at this point in the investigation, police believe the driver was dealing with mechanical issues. the first accident happened at somerset and silver where the truck collided with a car forcing it into a home. two people were in the car and they are being treated for

nonserious injuries at san francisco general. the truck continued down silver eventually plowing into a lamp pole at san bruno and silver. that's when it slipped on its side breaking through a guardrail and dumping construction debris on 101 southbound. [ pause ] >> nobody was hit to my knowledge as far as the debris falling down to the 101. as you can see behind me, the truck didn't go over on 101 which would have been a disaster. more people could have been hurt or even killed. it's a miracle that not more serious injuries were happened. we are thankful that the people had nonlife-threatening injuries. >> reporter: 101 southbound will be closed for at least an additional three hours. silver avenue isn't expected to be open until 4 p.m. the driver of the truck walked away relatively unscathed and had to crawl out of the

windshield to safety. he is cooperating with police. now, the area on silver bayshore and san bruno are congest the right now. not only because of the accident but because of road construction, as well. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. a fatal crash last night after a driver going the wrong way on highway 101 smashed into a big rig in san rafael. the chp reports the driver was going north on the southbound lanes near the central san rafael exit. the identity of the driver is not released. this is the second fatal collision though on that stretch of highway this week. two suspects have been arrested for allegedly robbing and shooting a store clerk in antioch. it happened last night at a convenience store on lone tree way near hillcrest avenue. shortly after police located a vehicle there, they believe it was involved in the robbery. the two suspects inside were arrested. the clerk was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. a three-day manhunt ends in an hours long standoff and now police say they have a

suspected murderer in custody. it happened at a home on mass. avenue in redwood city yesterday evening. anthony kirincic is accused of stabbing his girlfriend 34-year- old colleen straw to death in her san mateo home. kirincic had been on the run since friday. police tracked his car at an urgent care clinic on saturday and found him last night at a relative's home in redwood city, charged with first-degree murder. >> they were able to safely take the suspect anthony kirincic into custody and i can report to you that he is under arrest by san mateo police department now on a $5 million arrest warrant for murder. >> police are questioning a relative of kirincic's who owns the house he was hiding out in. new at noon, the mayor of chicago has announced the police chief is fired. police souped gary mccarthy came -- superintendent gary maccarthy came under fire after the shooting death of laquan mcdonald at the hands of a white police officer. dashcam video shows the 17-year- old being shot by more than a dozen times by officer jason

van dyke last october. protestors are frustrated that it took more than 400 days to charge van dyke with a crime. and in baltimore, a second day of jury selection is under way for the first of six officers charged in the death of 25-year-old freddie gray. demonstrators outside the courtroom could be heard inside. they gathered on the streets of the city calling for justice. gray died in april when he was critically injured in the back of a police transport van. officer william porter faces manslaughter for his alleged role in gray's death. and several families in contra costa county have to find a new place to sleep tonight after a fire hit their apartment complex jones vista in el sobrante. nobody was hurt. the size of the flames had neighbors worried. >> we arrived on scene, we already had fire through the roof, and that's a pretty significant -- that's a pretty significant issue when you have that already. um, so the fire was pretty well advanced by the time we got here and that's what prompted

us to call a second alarm so early. >> fire crews believe it wases caused by a stovetop left on in an upper unit -- fire crews believe it was caused by a stovetop left on in an upper unit. a chilly start to the day but we have rain coming our way. let's check in with roberta with the forecast. >> it looks so glorious, i had to go out and see for myself. this is the view right now from san francisco looking out from the transamerica pyramid towards the golden gate bridge. a few high, thin clouds. otherwise our current air temperatures are in the 50s. it is warmer at this hour than it was just 24 hours ago. and later today it's going to pan out to be a slightly warmer day with temperatures in the 50s pretty much across the board except low 60s around the rim of the bay. but this is just part of the story. that cold air mass that's firmly in place for the past several nights bringing us freezele temperatures. that's pretty much history. because we have an approaching cold front, the clouds are going to serve as a blanket and

keep kind of a cap on things in the overnight hours so the coldest spot will be about 35 degrees instead of 32. but these clouds are all associated with the cold front already producing some rain showers across the northwestern section of the state of california. we are going to track this storm together and i'll tell you when you will need that umbrella again that's coming up a little later, frank, in this newscast. >> thank you. president obama rang up his trip to paris to meet with world leaders on climate change. tina kraus says the president is optimistic. >> reporter: president obama says he has high hopes that world leaders will keep making progress on climate change. >> this is an economic and security imperative that we have to tackle now. >> reporter: the president and nearly 150 world leaders are taking part in the united nations climate change conference. it began on monday and will continue for two weeks. the goal is to hash out a legally binding agreement on climate to keep global warming below 3.6 degrees fahrenheit

blanketing streets during the eastern rush hour. one person was killed in the rush hour. five people were stranded in the wilderness in el dorado county. the family had been stranded in a truck for hours after getting lost north of highway 50 in bad weather. they were told and hungry but dad and the five children were otherwise okay. on to weather now. here's roberta on what is kind of a chilly day and i guess we have rain coming, too, right? >> we have rain coming. good afternoon, everyone. it's time to go ahead and have lunch with my favorite weather watchers in and around our microclimates. these are people just like you that are home and want to check in and tell us what's going on in their neighborhood. for example, it looks like we have 57 degrees right there. that would be george hughes. yes, it is. he is reporting a wind up to 4 miles per hour so he actually calculated this afternoon a wind chill as frank was alluding to feels chilly out there of 48 degrees. that's what it feels like when you couple up the air temperature with the wind.

otherwise, temperatures are in the mid-50s. a bird's-eye view over the city of san francisco, looking out towards the golden gate bridge. the visibility is unlimited. you can almost see all the way out to the farralones. 54 san francisco. 55 santa rosa. it's in the mid-50s throughout the tri-valley. this is a beautiful image. it's our satellite and radar. we get the satellite image and then we put on top of that the radar so you can see the precipitation associated with this incoming frontal boundary area. these are kind of renegade clouds. they are running in advancement. actual front. so we have the mostly cloudy skies already across the extreme northern half of the state of california. this is our futurecast. and it clearly does illustrate while we will have some clear slots on our wednesday, it will generally become mostly cloudy before the front rolls in on thursday. and if our timing serves us correctly, the front should be moving in about 7 p.m. on thursday in the north bay, then gradually sliding to the south. by friday all the activity will be out of here except for a

little hit-and-miss scattered showers off the immediate coast. so we are crunching our numbers together so we can tell you what to expect as far as rainfall amounts are totaled up. it looks like over about .25" of rain in the san rafael area over a tenth in san francisco. this is from the incoming system, the first cold front of the season, or i should say for the month of december, first cold front for december. it looks like it will produce by .05" of rain in san jose and under .25" in the eastern portion of the bay area. we are still far off so the numbers could change. central valley started at 12 degrees in truckee going up to 39. 59 in monterey bay. sunrise tomorrow morning at 7:07. temperatures won't be as cold overnight as this morning generally between 35 and 45 degrees. today's high temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. it will be 58 degrees in vallejo, american canyon and

benicia. 60 in mountain view backing all the way into palo alto. and upper 50s and low 60s pretty much around the rim of the bay. northeast flat winds 5 to 10 miles per hour. there you have it increasing clouds on your wednesday afternoon leading to an inch of rain on thursday in the wettest locations, friday begins to clear. we have dry skies on saturday. we cloud back up on sunday and you know what, frank? that bears watching we may have rain on sunday night. >> after no rain at all it seems to be coming in waves. >> that's what we want. we want to get the ground ready for heavy downpours associated with el nino. >> and it's acomin' we hope. 12:16. parents a popular learning toy could be compromising your child's privacy. v-tech makes learning toys. the company says its app was breached some two weeks ago. hackers didn't steal credit card numbers but they accessed kids, names and birthdays and addresses as well as photos.

giving away a billion free ebooks. you can go to the website billionebookgift.org and get 50 free books. henry kim started "giving tuesday" three years ago as a social movement and now it's gone worldwide. with 40,000 global partners, raising nearly $100 million so far. >> all over the country people started to bring their own ideas to "giving tuesday" and it started to grow. >> you're thankful, you give back. it's nicer than shopping all day. >> reporter: here in milpitas they are scheduled to get the socks delivery at 12:30 p.m. if you think this is a fad, last year "giving tuesday" raked in 4 $6 million a 63% increase from the previous year. $46million, a 63% increase from the previous year. >> sales are projected for something to hit $3 billion up 12% from last year. we won't know specific totals for a few more days.

linked to their chicken sala costco is facing its first lawsuit since an e. coli outbreak was linked to their chicken salad. a montana woman got sick after eating the chicken salad she bought from their location in bozeman. costco linked the outbreak to onions and celery supplied by a farm in tracy. more than a dozen cases have been linked to that very same chicken salad nationwide. new york is the first city in the united states to add high sodium warnings to menus. the saltshaker signs are being
