scene. jan crawford is in our washington bureau. she's been talking to law enforcement sources there. jan, what do you have? >> reporter: okay. got it. >> pelley: jan crawford still talking to law enforcement sources. jan, are you with us? >> reporter: scott, we're hearing the bomb squad is on the scene and is trying the neutralize what we're told is an apparent explosive device. now, a few moments ago a spokeswoman for the police department there gave a briefing to reporters who were on the scene, and according to the "los angeles times," she briefed reporters and a spokeswoman for the police department, saying that they believe there are one to three suspects that were inside the building. they were believed to be heavily armed and possibly wearing body armour. now, as you said, we have got reports confirmed now that there are up to 20 victims. no word on how many fatalities. and you're showing some of the scenes of some of the victims
12:01 pm
there on the sidewalk. we can also confirm that many of the victims are now being taken to the loma linda university medical center, where they will of course be receiving treatment. but right now we're told from our law enforcement sources this remains an active shooter investigation a very fluid scene with a bomb squad on the scene trying to disable what they believe to be an explosive device. one to three suspects still at large, believed according to the spoationwoman for the police department, sourced to the "l.a. times," believed to be possibly wearing body armor. so that's the latest that we know right now from law enforcement, scott. >> pelley: jan thank you very much. these reports even coming from law enforcement are often just the best gus that they can make. these are early early minutes in this event. this began about 45 minutes ago. so there is a great deal more that we don't know than we do know.
12:02 pm
rick garcia is at our station kcbs, in los angeles. he's the anchorman there. rick, what's the latest that you're hearing? >> reporter: well, scott we're still at 20 people shot. that was information given to us by san bernardino fire officials, 20 victims at this inland regional center, which is about an hour's drive east of los angeles california. the 1300 block of south waterman. it's a facility that handles social services and mental health. we've been watching, as you have, pictures of emergency resources on hand. they'll set up some triage areas to treat the victims according to the injuries. we've seen people led out of the building with their hands up. many of those folks we expect to be innocent people, but that's the protocol that's involved when police are trying to find an active shooter. in this case we don't know if there is one two or three active shooters. it's a possibility that we have
12:03 pm
more than one. >> pelley: rick garcia of kcbs. rick, thank you very money. this is a live picture of our kcbs helicopter that is over the scene of what police in san bernardino, california are describing as an active shooter event. as rick just said, there are reports of as many as 20 people wounded, but the number is sure to change as we learn more and discover exactly what has occurred there in the next several hours. the freeway has been blocked off entirely in from the of this building where you can see the fire department has set up a triage area to treat the wounded. jan crawford reported a moment ago that the wounded are already en route to the loma linda university medical center. we do not have any information on any conditions of those people who have apparently been wounded.
12:04 pm
we do not know if there are any fay faults. police are searching fur at least one gunman. there have been reports of more than one gunman, but that is often the case of the early minutes of these kinds of events. it looks like the fire department triagary that we're looking at right there is being disbanded. no telling what that means but there were a number of ambulances there on stand-by. there were a number of gurneys there on stand-by, and it looks like all of that equipment is being put away. you can see all of these police vehicles we have seen police in riot gear and military-style gear with long guns flooding into the area. there is a police armored vehicle, too, police armored vehicles right there that you see swat team members getting out of. more helicopters converging on the scene.
12:05 pm
san bernadineo, california, east of los angeles about an hour's drive of central los angeles in the inland empire of california. active shooter situation. may be as many as 20 people wounded. the building is called the inland regional center. there's an aerial view of it there. you see right there in the middle in that parking lot area, there's two white roofs that been toward each other. that's apparently the address for where the active shooter situation is unfolding, and it appears to be a social services office for the state of california. a lot more people coming out of those buildings. pretty large office buildings. and we've been watching people being evacuated by the police. jan crawford has been checking with federal sources on the federal response. jan, what do you know?
12:06 pm
>> reporter: it's just been confirmed that the a.t.f. and the f.b.i. are both on the way to the scene to assist local officials. there we've also confirmed the bomb squad is on the scene trying to neutralize what they believe to be an apparent explosive device. all as you see people there being taken out. many people are already being transported to the local loma linda university medical center with these injuries. we still have the number of victims believed to be around 20. no word yet on the suspects or whether or not those... but there are still believed to be between one and three. the latest news is federal agents are also on the way to assist with this very flaw wind scene, potentially with an explosive device in the facility. >> pelley: now this address core core responds with a state of california agency called the
12:07 pm
department of developmental services, and it apparently provides a wide range of services to the developmentally disabled. the building is called the inland regional center, and apparently much of the building if not all of it, is part of the california department of developmental services. this is a live picture of the freeway right in front of the building where the active shooter situation has been unfolding. massive police presence, fire department presence. this began about 45 minutes ago perhaps as many as 20 people have been shot. we are told that they are en route or have arrived at the loma linda university medical center. we have not seen any wounded evacuated over the last half hour or so. and our helicopter has been
12:08 pm
right over the fire department triage area where those patients would likely be brought. we have been watching a large number of people being evacuated. this is that triage area i was telling you about. this is a picture from a few minutes ago when it was still set up and ready to receive people who had been wounded. but at the point that we saw this picture they began taking all of that equip down and moving the equip out of there. and so we have to assume from that that there are no more wounded to care for at least not immediately. these are some of the people who were being evacuated from the office building. standard police procedure, they are asked to put their hands in the air for the protection of the officers as the police officers lead them out of the area. we also saw some people being evacuated by officers who had their weapons drawn.
12:09 pm
there's a great deal more that we don't know than we know at this point. the police are looking for at least one gunman. they have warned residents in the area that the gunman is still at large. we're just watching these live pictures coming in from oar kcbs helicopter. we've seen dozens and dozens of police vehicles, swat team members, police officers in full riot gear arriving there. these appear to be office workers from the building.
12:10 pm
they're just milling around. they've been moved to a safe place. they're not far from the building itself. one would imagine if the police had least track of a gunman who had a rifle they wouldn't allow these people to be so nearby, so the police have some reason to believe that the perimeter around this building at this point is safe enough for these office workers to stand by and wait this situation out. again, this began about 45 minutes ago. you can see the camera panning up now away from the office workers. that was the triage area. the fire department is now pulling out of that area. this was all set up here at this intersection to receive wounded. that operation receiving the wounded, would appear to be over. all the medical equipment that we saw spread out at this intersection has been removed the ambulances are gone.
12:11 pm
there had been reports of as many as 20 people shot. we know that some of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital about half an hour ago. we do not know the condition of those people. jan crawford in our washington newsroom, what are you hearing? >> reporter: scott, within the next few minutes our norah o'donnell will be sitting down with the president of the united states to conduct a previously scheduled interview so we do not know if the president has been informed of. this we assume he has. of course, the president has been very outspoken about what he believes to be the need for more gun regulations in the wake of what has been a sharp rise in the number of active shootings over the past seven or eight years that f.b.i. has well documented. so we will expect to hear from
12:12 pm
norah of course at the end of that interview. it should be getting under way momentarily. now, as far as the situation on the ground, we're still hearing from our law enforcement sources that the a.t.f. and the f.b.i. now are on the way to the scene to assist in what is a very fluid and seems to be from what law enforcement first are saying dangerous situation. the bomb squad is on the scene. they believe there is an apparent explosive device that they are now going to have to try to neutralize. and they will be assisted in that by the a.t.f. and the f.b.i. >> pelley: jan, thank you. we now have a brief interview with a gentleman whose wife was apparently inside the building. she came out and explained to him what she saw. so let's listen in on marcos aguilera. >> you're telling me your wife... >> just got out of the building.
12:13 pm
>> . >> reporter: what did she say in. >> she say the guy came in next to her office and started shooting. they locked themselves in her office. they saw bodies on the floor and she said the ambulance started taking people out on stretchers. >> pelley: that is the first report we've had from inside the building. that's marcos aguilera describing what his wife told him about what she saw in the office building. a number of bodies, he said, on the floor. the gunman barricading himself inside. that certainly fits with the information that we have been receiving from law enforcement that there are as many as 20 people wounded and that the gunman was still active. we have also seen a lot of heavily armed police officers moving into the building. so whether the gunman is still active or not, we do not know, but we this know they were closing on his location.
12:14 pm
this is a picture from earlier. half an hour ago we saw a number of police officers heavily arm moving toward the building. the figure of 20 people wounded is certainly going the change. first reports are always wrong. the police are trying to give us as much information as they can as quickly as they can but in these early minutes the information is of often very fluid. but it does give you a sense of the scale. if they're reporting more than a dozen or 20 people wounded that gives you a sense of the scale of this active shooter situation unfolding in san ber dino, california. this is a live picture from our kcbs helicopter. this is the freeway in front of the building. it is completely blocked off on
12:15 pm
both ends by the authorities, and they are using it as a staging area to try to shut down the gunman or gunmen. i'm getting some new information on the inland regional center. that is the office building that is involved in this. there are apparently about 670 staff members at the inland regional center. it provides services to 30,000 people with developmental disabilities and their families. that's in san ber dino and riverside counties. this is the california department of developmental services, and that agency's goal is to help people with documental disabilities achieve independence in their lives.
12:16 pm
police are still looking for the gunman and warning people in san bernardino to stay away from the area. a large number of office workers are now garretting outside the building. we saw them being evacuated earlier. and now they are in an area that the police have deemed safe. a man in a wheelchair coming out there. presumably some of these people aren't the office workers at the department of developmental services. presumably some of them are their clients. and the police have brought everybody out and the police have gone inside the building. and what happens next we don't know.
12:17 pm
we have a brief interview with a man by the name of marcus aguilera that we'd like to play for you again. his wife was inside the department of developpal services offices, and she explained to him what it was that happened. this is marcos aguilera. >> reporter: you're telling me your wife... >> just got out of the building. >> reporter: what did she see? >> she said the guy came in next to her office and started shooting. they looked themselves in her office. they saw bodies on the floor and she said right now ambulances are taking people out in stretchers. >> pelley: that's first report we have from inside the building. marcos aguilera explaining what his wife said that she saw inside. here's a map of the area that's the inland regional center.
12:18 pm
this is a picture of earlier today, not a live picture from a person being taken away on a stretcher. we this not know whether this is one of the victims of the shooting, although this person does seem to be moving and the paramedics taking this person away do not seem to be in a great, great hurry. so perhaps that person was not seriously hurt. this is a live picture of the people gathering outside the building. and as we're watching these live pictures from san bernardino california, i want to bring in rick garcia, the anchor man of kcbs and also jan crawford, our legal correspondent who is talking to her sources in washington d.c. jan, what are uho hearing now? supreme court. >> reporter: scott, we see pictures of people coming out of
12:19 pm
the building but people are coming to the building. one was a father who got a text from his daughter. the associated press is reporting he received a text from his daughter who was inside the facility where she works. he just a few moments ago after he received this text went to the facility and the text said "people shot. in the office waiting for cops. pray for us. i am locked in an office." that was a text that a father there received from his daughter who works in this facility. so when we see these photos, this horrific scene not only of victims, but of the families of the victims who were trying to get more information, waiting to hear the word on their loved ones, the condition of their loved ones. what we know now is there are up to 20 victims potentially multiple suspects one to three suspect, and the bomb squad on the scene with a potential explosive device. >> pelley: as we continue to watch the live pictures, rick garcia at kcbs, rick, what are you hearing?
12:20 pm
>> reporter: well, scott, we can tell you that other hospitals in the area have been put on alert in san bernardino. we've also been told that other agencies are on their way and some of them probably there now. motorists have been told to stay away from the area. this took place about 11:20 los angeles time. san bernardino is 60 miles east of los angeles. right now it is 12:20 out here in southern california. but needless to say, a lot of people on edge. you mentioned, scott that there were a lot of emergency responders on scene and in los angeles, southern california, like the rest of the country really had a lot of beefed-up security over the thanksgiving holidays over the weekend. i'm curious to know if some of this was residual security that were kept on the clock in the event something happened post-holiday. >> pelley: rick garcia of kcbs. rick, thank you, and please stay with us as we continue to watch
12:21 pm
this scene unfolding live. as rick mentioned, this has been going on for about one hour now. an active shooter situation at the inland regional center, which is an office of the california department of developmental services, which from slides services to the -- provides services to the mentally disabled. reports of as many as 20 people wounded. they have been evacuated to the hospital. we've seen a number of office workers and perhaps clients of the department of developmental services escorted out with their hands up. and they have been assembled a safe distance from the building. we have watched a number of heavily armed police officers enter the building. and as rick garcia mentioned the authorities had warned people of san bernardino to stay away from this area because they believe that the gunman or gunmen are still at large.
12:22 pm
no idea what the motive for this most recent mass shooting could be. this is a police armored caterpillar of the kind that is commonly used by the bomb squad. now, jan crawford, from her federal law enforcement sources, has told us that there was concern of a suspicious package perhaps a bomb, perhaps, that was located in the building. so this is evidence of the bomb squad at work as they move that armored caterpillar in the kind of vehicle that they would use to approach a bomb and even remove a bomb should a bomb be found. that is not the kind of information we have at the moment. the deployment of the bomb squad would be pretty routine in a situation like this.
12:23 pm
there is a report of a suspicious package, but again we this not have any confirmation of any explosive device, but the bomb squad obviously is working on figuring that out. jan crawford reported the u.s. department of bureau of alcohol, tobacco & firearms is en route, the f.b.i. is en route. the a.t.f. would be involved in any bomb investigation. it would appear that in terms of the wounded, the immediate emergency appears to be over. a short while ago we were looking at a triage area that had been set up by the fire department. a number of ambulance a number of stretchers paramedics ready the treat people. and maybe 20, 25 minutes ago
12:24 pm
right about at this intersection, we saw them removing all of that emergency medical equipment. so it would appear that anyone who was wounded, anyone that police were able to get to, has been evacuated we understand to loma linda university medical center. we're just getting information that the president has been briefed on this and the white house has been watching and jan crawford has more from washington. report scott, the president has just gotten a briefing from lisa monaco about this unfolding terrible incident in san bernardino. he's about to sit down with our norah o'donnell for a previously scheduled interview to discuss climate change, among other issues and, of course, you can
12:25 pm
be certain that this will be something that they discuss. we'll be hearing from norah at the end of that interview. scott, as we see now this scene, a.t.f., f.b.i., federal agents there on the ground assisting the san bernardino law enforcement authorities. our sources tell us that the local authorities will continue to lead this investigation at this moment, but they will be provided assistance by the a.t.f. and the f.b.i. now, about the golf course. that is kind of adjoining this complex, and, according to the "los angeles times" and other local sources there it has been put on lockdown. what that means is completely unclear. it could mean a golf course might be with a lot of open space a pretty good place for a gunman to run and hide. so that right now is on lockdown. that's why we're seeing some of those images there of the helicopter at that golf course. >> pelley: jan, thank you very much. we now have another interview from a man who received a text from his son apparently his son
12:26 pm
was a witness to the shooting. the man's name is paula -- paul lacroix. let's listen to what he had to say. >> he said the alarms went off and they were told to hunker down and hide and shelter in place. and he says eventually the police came by and took him out. he never heard any gunshots or anything like that. right now they're all by the railroad tracks. he says they're getting ready to load them. the police told them they're going to load them into buses and take them off i'm assuming to be interviewed. >> reporter: did he call you or text you? >> we've been texting back and forth. >> reporter: what did his first text say? >> something was going on. there were live shooters in the building and police were outside and they could see them running around trying to figure out what was going on. >> pelley: that's paul lacroix who is telling us what his son texted him. his son was apparently inside the building at the time.
12:27 pm
we're just gig reports of people inside. we have another one from marcosing a lair ramp his wife was inside the building. apparently he had an opportunity to talk to her. this is what mr. aguilera had to say about her report. >> reporter: you're telling me your wife is in there... >> just got out of the building right now. >> reporter: what did she see? >> she said the guy came in next to her office and i guess started shooting. they locked themselves in her office. they saw bodies on the floor and she said right now ambulances are taking people out in stretchers. >> pelley: that was marcos aguilera telling us what his wife, who was inside the building, told us. he described multiple bodies which would comport with what we have been told by law enforcement that perhaps as many as 20 people have been shot.
12:28 pm
paul lacroix is listening to a phone call with his son. channel 2 in los angeles has that. let's listen in. >> okay. >> hi, garrett. this is crystal cruz with kkal9 news. thank you for taking the time for us. how are you doing? how are people around you doing? >> pretty shaken up. [inaudible]. >> reporter: can you describe where you're going? where are you heading? are you on a bus? >> we're in a parking lot right now of an office building. i had heard that an officer is coming for us but i haven't heard anything else.
12:29 pm
we're just waiting here. there are obviously some people who are shaken up. they've given us water bottles. >> reporter: you have water. do you have food over there? >> not that i can see . we're standing in the shade with water bottles right now. >> reporter: paul, can you tell us what you recall about today's incident? >> yeah. i was near the front of the building. and suddenly a car alarm went off, and i saw people start to evacuate the building but then someone started shouting in the halls that there's possibly a bomb. so we were all told to go back into our offices. we locked the doors. i was with my coworkers. i looked out the window out
12:30 pm
front. and some officers started showing up and running around with hands on their guns. and eventually we saw a lot of officers with vests and automatic weapons. so we had to retreat to an inner room in our section. eventually we got a message over the intercom telling us to head to another section of the same building on the ground floor we were in, building one. so we made our way with other coworkers to this part of the building. we were all corralled into a section in the back corner of the building. there were officers everywhere wearing vests and with automatic rifles. and eventually they
