wireless trigger. police say they also found this bag of pipe bombs in the suspects's home and stockpile of ammunition. kpix 5's betty yu is live in san bernardino. betty, still a lot of pieces to this puzzle coming together. >> reporter: that's right, allen. and that is because there are many crime scenes as of this morning, there were still bodies inside the building where the shooting happened. and today investigators are just starting to look into whether that male shooter had any ties to terrorist organizations. meanwhile, out here on the same street, where that shooting took place, as you can see, people are coming by to leave messages, candles and flowers, to the victims and their families. 28-year-old syed farook seemed to live a normal life. he was born in the united states and worked as a san bernardino county health inspector for five years. he and his wife 27-year-old tashfeen malik lived in his

townhouse in nearby redlands where this afternoon, fbi agents searched a sedan out front for evidence. >> there were 12 pipe bomb type devices found in that -- that house or in the garage to that house. there were also hundreds of tools, many of which could be used to construct ieds or pipe bombs. >> reporter: more than 4500 rounds of ammunition were also found inside suggesting the massacre could have been far worse. the fbi says the pair used two assault rifles and two handguns in the violence. they left their six-month-old daughter with a grandmother and came dressed to kill in black tactical gear. they opened fire in the conference room shortly after syed left the county luncheon upset. >> nobody gets upset at a party, goes home and puts together that kind of scheme or plan to come back and do that. so there was some planning that went into this. >> reporter: the couple fired off up to 75 rounds.

police fired 380 at their rented suv in the final shootout. authorities are now trying to figure out what kind of motives were at play. cbs news sources say the two were looking at isis propaganda online. this neighbor rides by the home regularly. >> i'm more worried actually about the street traffic than the people in the neighborhood. i never noticed anything. no police cars, nothing. >> reporter: now, we know that syed's wife came to the u.s. last summer on a pakistani passport and a so-called fiancee visa. now, again, authorities are trying to determine if her husband had become radicalized and whether he had any ties to terrorist groups. allen? >> betty, we know they had a 6- month-old daughter but can you tell us more about exactly how they met each other? >> reporter: yeah. we're told that ziet went back to -- syed went back to saudi arabia on annual pilgrim imagine, and stayed two weeks

where he met his wife. we are told in 2014, she applied for that visa. and earlier this year, he went back to saudi arabia and came back with his wife. >> all right. betty yu in san bernardino, thank you. also we have word this afternoon governor brown is expected to hold a news conference in san bernardino this evening. [ pause ] we are getting our first look at some of the victims killed in the massacre. 52-year-old nicholas thalasinos was a county health inspector in the same division as the suspect. his wife jennifer says her husband was friendly with syed farook. >> my husband might have trained him a couple times. so i mean, they got along. that's what -- and as far as i know, he got along with everybody. that's what is so shocking that he would have turned around and do this. >> a friend of thalasinos said he had a heated argument with farook about islam two weeks ago. farook said it was a peaceful

religion and said americans don't understand it. damian miens was working for the company for three months. he worked for a catholic school and dressed up as santa often. he had a wife and two children. mike wetzel a father of 6, sierra claiborne who worked for the health department and daniel kauffman who ran a coffee shop at the center. a vigil will be held for them tonight in san bernardino. in light of the shootings, president obama renewed his call for action to make it harder for anyone to get firearms. >> we all have a part to play. and i do think that as the investigation moves forward, it's going to be important for all of us including our legislatures to see what we can do to make sure that when individuals decide that they want to do somebody harm, we're

making it harder for them to do it because right now it's just too easy. >> we are expecting new details on the mass shooting throughout the evening. stay with kpix 5 and cbssf.com for continuing coverage. a gun scare put a san jose hospital on lockdown this afternoon. around 1:30, someone reported seeing a man with a gun inside valley medical center. investigators say he never threatened anyone. but the hospital was put on lockdown just in case as sheriff's deputies went room to room searching for him. >> we got a description of the possible suspect. we were able to go through surveillance video throughout the hospital see that the possible suspect left the hospital around 1:31. >> deputies were able to track the man down. they are interviewing him now to see if any crime was committed. the lockdown was lifted a short time ago. new details on a deadly police shooting in san francisco's bayview district. cell phone cameras were rolling as a stabbing suspect died in a hail of gunfire. joe vazquez has learned more

about him and what police tried first to try to stop him. joe. >> reporter: police chief said today, allen, that his officers did what they needed to do but some in the community are wondering why the police officers had to kill him or, for that matter, had to shoot him in the first place. [ sirens ] >> oh my god, oh, my god! >> reporter: that first shot you heard was police firing a beanbag gun. a nonlethal weapon. but it seems to have no effect. the man refuses to drop the knife in his hand. so officers fire another beanbag shot. no effect. quickly after that real gunshots. [ repeated gunshots ] >> oh, my god!! >> reporter: mario woods died at the scene. he was a suspect in an earlier stabbing in the afternoon. >> the officers you can hear them yelling over and over again drop the knife. they had enough time to get the beanbag guns there and deploy it as many time as they did. i -- i -- i really don't know

how -- how much more you can make it plan to a wanted felon who had just abbed somebody that we needed him to drop the knife. >> he was trying to walk away. >> reporter: shaken richard with the group brothers against guns is speaking on behalf of mario's family. they have a lot of questions. >> that much force for a kitchen knife that he never lunged at any of the officers over 25 rounds casings was on the ground. you know, that's unacceptable. >> from the video it seems like you don't really see the guy make a move toward the officers. what's your thought on that? >> i think the video shows the -- the suspect move towards the officer as the officer cuts off his path. >> reporter: did the officer have to cut off his path or could they have given -- >> the officers have to arrest people that attempt to kill or stab other people. >> reporter: as for the question about killing the suspect, i'm told that officers are trained that if they believe their lives are in danger, then they are trained to at least shoot three times,

twice in the chest, once in the head, to keep the suspect from advancing toward them. in this case, it was multiplied as you saw several officers opening fire. reporting live, i'm joe vazquez, kpix 5. across the bay area there is a new push for stricter gun laws in oakland. vice mayor rebecca kaplan wants to make it illegal to leave guns unsecured in a vehicle. the goal is to prevent incidents like the recent killings of oakland peace muralist antonio ramos and kate steinle on pier 14. both were shot with guns stolen from law enforcement officers' vehicles. >> it is not enough to hope and pray for those who are dead or those who are injured. if we care about the lives being lost, we have to show it by our actions. >> oakland's public safety committee will take up the proposal on december 15. it would apply to both private and law enforcement vehicles. the city of san francisco is considering a similar ordinance. stormy weather gusty winds

across the bay area this afternoon. and sometime this morning we certainly can use the rain. in cupertino, wet roads as the rain poured down today. winds pushed about 10 miles per hour, gusts stronger than that. there's a chance of more rain there later this weekend. we'll have more on that in just a bit. but in san francisco, even a little dog is ready for the rain. the financial district peppered with umbrellas as soggy weather just kept coming. and in the east bay, walnut creek was soaked today. fall least scattered everywhere. winds blowing through that area, as well. in the north bay, we also saw some serious rainfall there. kpix 5's jackie ward in san anselmo. you met some people who are pretty excited about the weather. jackie. >> reporter: like really excited. pouring buckets is a description one man used when we asked him about the rain and the people of san anselmo were loving it. >> it was coming down but we're used to it here. >> reporter: whenever it rains in this community, the town manager goes through a checklist to get everyone

prepared. >> we make sure that all of our storm drains are, um, vacuumed out so that they are cleared. we make sure that the street sweepers come around and sweep up all the extra leaves whenever we can. >> reporter: san anselmo residents are used to much heavier rain than today. this marker shows where water levels reached in 2005 when too much rain came down too fast. >> all the adjacent creeks came through downtown and we need to watch the water level. >> reporter: the san anselmo creek is notorious for breaching water levels and something the town is constantly cognizant of but the sight of rain falling from the sky across the north bay is still well comedy by people here who are tired of the drought and rainfall is welcomed by people here. >> i came the back roads down to get my granddaughter. it was raining hard.

that was good! >> reporter: we're actually standing next to the storefront that usually has to deal with the creek when it floods. but today, there was no concern of that happening. in san anselmo, jackie ward, kpix 5. that's what we need around here, rainfall without flooding. the central valley you can see that north-to-south line. that's the boundary of rain that's already moved through. what's left for us is scattered showers. kpix 5 hi-def doppler radar showing those scattered showers mainly napa county, sonoma county, santa rosa. you have received a few showers over the past couple of hours. angwin, saint helena, south to vallejo and american canyon and around richmond. look at the one line of showers basically hugging the san mateo bridge from one end to the other all the way back to castro valley, farther out toward dublin, pleasanton and live. how much rainfall today? the north bay nearly 2 inches of rain. calistoga an inch.

novato more than half inch. .38" berkeley. .37" dublin. .35" saratoga. mount diablo peak wind gusts 63 miles per hour. ocean beach 36 miles per hour. now, the rain is wrapping up for us. heavy snow continues in the sierra. winter storm warning until 6:00 tomorrow. many more rounds of rain to talk about. we'll have that coming up in 8 minutes. san francisco prepares for super bowl 50, mayor ed lee is rolling out an ambitious plan to get the homeless off the streets. maria medina has details. >> reporter: just this morning, police cleared the homeless from this area. you can see some of them have returned. but the hope is that soon, these people will have a place to stay forever. we'll go ahead and take a look at video shot this morning as mayor lee announced he was going to launch a new department aimed at helping the homeless. san francisco has about 6700 homeless and he says in the past, many agencies and departments would help the homeless but not one department has that one goal. well, he says this new

department will have that one mission to help the homeless find a place to stay, find a job, help them out. here's what he had to say this morning. >> no one agency's mission was homelessness and today we fixed that. we will end homelessness. every -- every, single day for at least one person. >> reporter: and he says critics will question how he will end homelessness and as you heard, his answer was he will do it one person every day. back out here live he says that department is set to spend about $1 billion over the next four years and help 8,000 homeless. live in san francisco, maria medina, kpix 5. she certainly wasn't setting the best example according to police. coming up a bay area mother accused of shoplifting, then ditching her own daughter. >> plus, off duty but always alert. a bay area deputy helping

and... brought her 11 year d daughter along police are looking for a mother who went on a shoplifting run and brought her 11-year-old daughter along for the crime. but the story doesn't end there. kpix 5's da lin on what happened when police closed in. >> reporter: many shoppers believe this woman would win the worst mother of the year award. >> this person never should have been a mother in the first place. >> reporter: police say she brought her 11-year-old daughter and her infant to the serramonte target to shoplift two days before thanksgiving. when security guards stopped the trio at the door, police say the woman told the 11-year- old daughter to fight and run. the daughter bit a security guard in the shoulder. the mother ran off with the infant and never came back for the little girl. child protective service has custody of her. >> i feel sorry for the little 11-year-old and i'm really scared for the baby!

>> reporter: i'm told the guard is okay. he has bite marks. daly city police are still looking for the mother. rosalina medina from oakland. officers went to oakland today to search for the 34-year-old woman with no success. they believe she may be hiding at a relative's house. in daly city, i'm da lin, kpix 5. an off-duty san francisco sheriff's deputy jumped into action last night when a passenger attacked an airline employee at chicago's midway airport. cell phone footage shows airport police holding down that passenger. a witness says the passenger had just hit a southwest airlines employee. that's when the off-duty deputy tackled the passenger before police got there. tonight the sheriff's department tells us the off- duty deputy is m barberry, first name not given out for security reasons. new details emerging about the san bernardino suspect and his possible ties to terrorism. the "new york times" reporting the fbi found evidence that syed farook was in contact with

extremists both domestically and abroad including at least one person in the u.s. who was investigated for suspected terrorism but not charged. investigators have not made any official statement about the motive for the attacks. >> kpix 5's len ramirez shows us the bay area muslim community is already worried about the potential reaction. >> so a cover like this feels irresponsible -- [ non-english language ] of the bay area council on american-islamic relations was bracing for a backlash and she said the cover of the "new york post" just fanned the flames. >> after paris, just a couple of week, ago, we saw a, um, unprecedented increase in hate crimes and hate incidents across the country with san bernardino, these things are not going to let up. >> reporter: security was beefed up around the muslim community association building in santa clara following word that the san bernardino mass shooters were muslims. muslim leaders say there should be no association between their faith and violent acts. >> i wonder why other faiths

don't have to defend their faith when somebody, you know, who is a member of their faith goes out and does something crazy like we just saw last few days at planned parenthood. >> reporter: muslim community members say they often work with law enforcement to identify radicalized members of the community but the relationship has been strained. >> one of my favorite stories is one where the muslim community says to law enforcement, look, there's a person like rallying up violence in our community. turns out it was an fbi informant. that was in southern california. >> your average everyday muslim is like anyone else. they are hard working, tax paying citizens who are trying to lead a good life for their families. >> reporter: he says the action of a few are victimizing all muslims who now will very likely have to endure another wave of so-called islamophobia. len ramirez, kpix 5. betty yu will be live with the latest tonight at 10:00 for our special simulcast of bay

november. the concern, toxic algae. officials say california's dungeness crab fishery brought in $60 million last year. there's still rain on the radar now specifically over the san mateo bridge. it is widely scattered but we're impacting two major highways. one is highway 92. there it is right over the bridge itself stretching east toward hayward and dublin and livermore. that's one finger of rainfall that's out there. the other one is stretching from the san rafael-richmond bridge impacting you on 580 and 80 toward hercules and pinole we are getting a few showers. wouldn't be surprised if benicia, martinez and vallejo get in on that action over the next couple of minutes. the front is gone. look at the snow in the sierra. winter storm warning there through 6 p.m. tomorrow. then in the san joaquin valley. for us scattered showers tonight, and also tomorrow. but heavy showers and slow going on the san mateo bridge. we are in the upper 50s currently. san francisco 59. san jose and santa rosa 57. tonight, with a little bit less cloud cover as that front moves farther away from us, some of you are drop down to 40.

that's including you in fairfield and santa rosa. fremont 45. san jose 44 degrees. so a wet morning. the perfect scenario. we receive rainfall, but we did not receive a flooding. mountain snowfall as well. the front itself has moved through. it's draped over the central valley toward nevada. but in its wake we'll keep scattered showers around but by tomorrow afternoon, sunshine. saturday sunshine. then a very interesting pattern develops for next week with a ridge in a perfect place, and a low pressure area in a perfect place to give us a very active and very juicy storm track. here's the detail. the detail is significant. it's aimed just to our north. some of you in the north bay next week may get more than an inch or inch and a half of rainfall but down towards san jose, you may receive nothing more than a few drops. so that's going to be a very interesting setup. we'll see where that storm track sets up but it will be active next week. scattered showers overnight tonight and showers for the north bay tomorrow morning. by the afternoon, we are clear and friday will end sunny. so scattered showers tonight. couple of morning showers tomorrow. it will be dry right into and through the weekend. highs approaching 60 tomorrow.
