5:00 am
mining is chris lyford and i have father anthony next to me. john p8 row is here. we are going to look at some of the practical things in the administrative things and the responsibilities and the why behind that. so, welcome both of you fathers
5:01 am
for being here. it's a chance to look inside the arched diocese of san francisco. the archdiocese of san francisco. we often don't get a chance to think about how all of the catholic parishes work together and seem to be on the same page and take care of all of the practical challenges that come, especially in san francisco with retrofitting the schools and all of that stuff. you are the people who make that happen. it is good to have a chance to speak with you to realize not only the importance of that, but why you do that. father pitterick , you have spent many years teaching at fordham university. tell us about that. you made a decision to live in student housing. first of all, tell us what you
5:02 am
taught. >> i taught economics and i was happy teaching economics. if there was a priest at the time, we would live in the residence hall and i always enjoy that. reporter at -- >> moderator: how many years? >> 12 years afford them and then i went to administration at marquette university in milwaukee and then loyola in chicago. i was there for eight years as president. then i started a little incident to do catholic educate -- institute to do catholic education. i am now at the archdiocese of san francisco.>> moderator: father anthony, tell us about your work at the archdiocese.
5:03 am
just a quick summary of what is development. >> when people hear the term development, they think fundraising and raising money for the archdiocese, and that's what we like to do. what i want people to think more carefully about is the needs of the archdiocese and also running the world. we courtney the appeal and we raise funds for tuition assistance.>> moderator: so kids in the mission district and from neighborhoods that would like to go to catholic school here at the archdiocese, but they don't have the resources, this is the kind of thing that helps with that
5:04 am
process?>> that is not the main focus at the moment, but one of the positions i am in is to focus on major guests. it will include tuition assistance and also catholic identity. we want to make sure that we have strong catholic schools.>> moderator: i would imagine it is popular to have a pope names st. francis here at the archdiocese in san francisco. when people here more about that, they may want to hear more about the catholic church because they like that guy. that's what i hear, they like that guy.>> the archdiocese has invited the pope to come to san francisco. i'm not sure how realistic it is because he will only be here for a short time. the name francis san francisco -- and francisco, hopefully he
5:05 am
can get here to san francisco. >> moderator: that is a wonderful thing. i know many people have put the two together. when we get back, we will speak with father john piderit and father anthony. they make sure things -- things are warrant -- are working. we will be right back. good morning, it is masaic and i am chris lyford. ,
5:06 am
>> moderator: good morning and welcome to masaic. my name is chris lyford. we have father anthony and
5:07 am
father john piderit . we will get a chance to see inside the workings of the behind the scenes and practical things. also the why of what we do in spreading the gospel of jesus christ here in the archdiocese of san francisco. father john, you are the moderator, can you explain in layman's terms what those mean?>> i can. first i want to explain people -- to people where we are. we are catty corner from the cathedral. it is right across the way and i see it from my window every day. so, we are right there. then the vicar for administration is a big mouthful. if i had to explain what it is it normal terms, i am the chief operating officer. so, in a corporation, and we
5:08 am
are not a corporation, i would be that chief operating officer and the archbishop would be the chief executive officer. my focuses on doing what he wants and also serving the parishes. that is the main objective of what takes place in the chancellery. it supports operations for the parishes in areas about -- of human resources and finances and making sure everything is done properly. there are many areas like young adults and grieving people. there are approximately 90 parishes, 93 parishes in san francisco area. so, we have inner-city and rural. all of them have needs that are similar. the pastoral needs and the needs to educate the young people and also the practical
5:09 am
needs to make sure people are using good practices to balance their budgets and so on and so forth. also, one of the things that i think is exciting for me and the people that work in the chancellery is that he wants to reform the church. he wants to use some fundamental ways to do that. one of which is good liturgy that is appealing to people. another one is involvement of the people in the parish. both with prayer and volunteer activities. also in making sure that we get the christian message and the catholic message in ways that people can respond fully to that. so, we would make the spirit even more possible in their lives.>> moderator: so you are helping to facilitate the
5:10 am
objectives and the vision of the church in san francisco. you mentioned g and the active in -- liturgy and the active involvement of the parishioners in all aspects to the extent they can help. also increasing leadership in the parish. what are some examples of connected areas inside an average parish? what is an example of something you would be eager to support with regard to those three?>> the one that is common that happens in many parishes, whether they have a school or not, is that they have people that work in the parish house. all those -- we have to make sure that we follow not only california law, but san francisco employment law which is extra coit -- quite complex. they don't have the time or
5:11 am
resources or interest to do that. we have people in our office that stay in contact with them. whether they had issues or they are having difficulty with someone, we send somebody out to meet with them to help them along. that is more in the running of the parish. we also have a person in liturgy who works with the parishes on developing good liturgy. i know the archbishop likes to do more of that because he feels the way of attracting more people and younger people back to the church which is a great challenge. then, everything that he does for educating and developing our priests. we have an impressive group of young priests. >> i agree. the seminarians to be ordained this year, i have known for
5:12 am
many years. one was in my high school morality class. these are local guys and really good guys. exciting times for the archdiocese of san francisco. we are looking forward to talk -- to talking more about it. we will go from there. you are listening to masaic and my name is chris lyford. we will be back shortly.
5:13 am
5:14 am
hi and good morning. welcome to masaic . my name is chris lyford . they only come out because i asked them to because they are not people who like to blow their own horns.
5:15 am
they don't want attention, they just want to do their work. it is a ministry and they want to give glory to guide.>> we are talking about father anthony and father john piderit . father anthony is the director of development. thank you for letting us know where the archdiocese is. it is right across from the cathedral of saint mary's. just a you can picture it here in san francisco. father anthony, i want to talk about the vision and mission and development. in particular, what your initiatives are. you just started this particular position with keeping the momentum going. what are the kinds of things the development office does here in the archdiocese? what is the vision?>> let's start with the vision and
5:16 am
stewardship in particular. you think about every human being and the choices we have. it is our catholic view that every human being has a deep need to feel and extend gratitude and be prepared to give back. so, the context is to make people more aware of that. to make us more aware of all that we have been given and to provide ways for people to give and people in specific areas that they can give. primarily the focus has been on the annual appeal in the last few years and the priest retirement luncheon. we will be going out for major guests to simplify the appeal process. we would like to raise the appeal we have for priests.
5:17 am
it is not to look for money that we already have them, but to look for new donors, but to find people that have the ability to support. >> moderator: staying in touch with all of those people who give their part and have ties as catholics. also to bring in the resources that we need for the more significant projects. >> the one thing i would like to highlight is that it has been be -- it has become more clear the need that the elderly have to put their finances in order. we are trying to be as much assistance as we can be to help them find a state lawyers and other people to help them get their estates in an ordered way. so they are aware of the laws
5:18 am
and the ways to do that. it is one way we can assist.>> i did my graduate work as an iab. what struck me there was how grateful the students were when they graduated. after they graduated, really that school became their religion. they were enormously generous. in norm is sleep. now, oftentimes they came from families of means, but we know there are people of the catholic faith who are of means and who are generous by disposition. but they think a little bit more of their high schools and colleges and that's fine and good. but, we want them to think of the church as something. this is a great evangelization effort that is going on with
5:19 am
this pope and the previous two popes. we need resources to carry that forward. that point of contact that -- for families that the church is with baptism and marriage and the need for grief ministry in consolation. that whole reality, i think that's a huge area of opportunity where we can a knowledge and support. this is what that is.>> moderator: before we go to the break, do you have other perceptions father anthony? >> to be of service to the church and to help people understand and to be grateful for and to provide resources for the church.>> i just think of everywhere -- for example, what are some of the larger and some of the smaller parishes in this three county archdiocese? what are some of the names?>> peter and paul.
5:20 am
st. vincent de paul, st. matthews down in san mateo. people may say, i know that parish. then, there are some of the smaller ones. there is sacred heart in all imo -- in only my -- olema. the church is always there and we are helping -- we are calling on people to help us.>> we are trying empathize with the annual appeal that your participation is both at the parish level and at the archdiocese level. both have to function well in order to get christ's message out.>> moderator: we will talk more about that and we will
5:21 am
talk about the francis effect on all of this will we come back. you are watching masaic and my name is chris lyford. we will be right back. ,,
5:22 am
5:23 am
how mile -->> moderator: hi and welcome to masaic. my name is chris lyford. we are talking about the important areas of structure and support for the archdiocese of san francisco. i john piderit next to me and father anthony giampietro . we are talking about the archdiocese and really all of this is for the sake of the mission of the gospel of jesus christ. the mission of love for everyone. there is a lot going on, as always, in the church to foster
5:24 am
that mission. folks have seen on the news recently about the family in rome. it's about a series of major meetings to talk about how we can embed jamize the family in a more vibrant way. let's talk about that. i would like to have each of you just talk about that.>> i will talk about it and then have father anthony giampietro come back and talk. the pope is said that he wanted to shake things up. he certainly has done that with what he has called what is extraordinary and preparatory. he has gotten all of the parts talking and they disagree with one another. that has some people upset. he has shaken things up. the other thing i want to point
5:25 am
out is that he really is an effective soundbite communicator. in this sense, he continues to say things almost daily that draw attention. this is the year and a half after he was elected pope. there are things that people find about him that are very attractive. i think those are two important things to keep in context.>> moderator: father.>> people are not tired of this pope. the principles that he is enunciating of mercy and forgiveness are not new, but somehow his being in his way and incarnating christ's message is impacting catholics and non- catholics. when he speaks on an issue that may be controversial, sump -- people are actually hearing.
5:26 am
sure, there are people upset with the way he does certain things, but he has the attention of the world. whether it is muslim dialogue or family life, he has cardinals talking about important things.>> he is speaking with his actions.>> it will be interesting to speak with the archbishop who has been in rome, barcelona and then in england. when he was in rome for a couple of days, he stayed with cardinal burke who is someone who is removed and put into another office. he is still cardinal and he has spoken up and said that the pope needs to be clear on some of these major issues. all of the major issues. but, it will be interesting to see what the archbishop learned from cardinal burke. it is true, i saw a liberal weekly newspaper commend cardinal burke for speaking up because he says that is what
5:27 am
the pope is asking for. not to hold back. well, you have to pay for it in the end, but he did speak up.>> moderator: you get the feeling that more is to come. i think people are tuning into the catholic website. by the way, our website is sf archdiocese.org. we want to show that to the folks. you can email info it sf archdiocese.org for more information. -- info@sfarchdiocese.org for more information.>> we are trying to understand better how christ would have us live compassionately within a fallen world and bring hope to those situations that are difficult
5:28 am
for them and their families. i think pope francis embodies this hope. it's a lot to promise and we will see how it plays out going forward. it is an exciting time.>> i would just add that if her -- if christ were around, he would be reaching out to gaze and he would also say, -- gays and he would also say, go and sin no more.>> moderator: thank you for joining us. we will see you next time on masaic . attracting visitors from around the world, around the year. along the coast, protected areas are set aside to preserve a fragile community of animals and plants. to protect these natural wonders, here's what to know before you go. stay at least 300 feet away from seals. this is their home. don't touch marine life in tide pools. take away your trash and your happy memories.
