department handled the case of laquan mcdonald. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president obama says the threat of terrorism has entered a new phase, but vows the u.s. will defeat it. he sought to reassure americans sunday, following the california attack that killed 14 people, in a rare prime time address from the oval office. but he did not lay out any broad shift in strategy. mark albert is in washington. mark, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this address comes as the most recent cbs news poll shows only 21% of americans have a great deal of confidence in the government's ability to protect against terrorism. so the president sought to convince the country he is on top of this rapidly evolving threat. in just his third oval office

address, president obama warned the nation that isis or isil threatens us all. >> the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. we will destroy isil and any other organization that tries to harm us. >> reporter: the 13 1/2 minute speech came four days after the mass shooting in san bernardino, california, killed 14 people and less than a month after the paris attack. >> as a father to two young daughters who are the most precious part of my life, i know that we see ourselves with friends and coworkers at a holiday party like the one in san bernardino. i know we see our kids in the faces of the young people killed in paris. >> reporter: the president called on congress to ban people on the no-fly list from buying guns, restrict sales of assault rifles like the ones used in san bernardino, and enact a stronger screening for those entering the u.s. without a visa. mr. obama also wants congress to give his explicit authorization to use force against isis. the president vowed not to get into another decade-long war on

foreign soil, and said that the battle is not with any religion. >> we cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between america and islam. that, too, is what groups like isil want. let's not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear. >> reporter: the president said there is no evidence the san bernardino attackers were directed by a terror group overseas. republican speaker paul ryan criticized the president's speech as disappointing and said that it defended a, quote, failing policy. the speaker said the house would vote later this week on a bipartisan bill that would update that visa waiver program to try and reduce the risk of extremists slipping into the u.s. even as the president's own review of that program gets underway. >> mark albert in washington, thank you, mark. the president's words did not impress republicans on the campaign trail. florida senator marco rubio said americans are scared because

president obama is, quote, completely overwhelmed by the threat. >> nothing that happened in the speech tonight is going to assuage people's fears. first of all, we heard tonight that the same strategy that has brought us to this point is the strategy he is going to continue with. he honestly believes there is a coalition fighting against isis. this is absurd. there is no such coalition. >> jeb bush says president obama, quote, has finally been forced to abandon the political fantasy he has perpetrated for years that the threat of terrorism is receding. investigators are learning more about the couple behind the san bernardino attack and the weapons. officials want to know if tashfeen malik who was born in pakistan and lived in saudi arabia radicalized her american-born husband syed farook. the assault rifles used in the massacre were traced to farook's former next door neighbor. chris martinez has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: thousands of san bernardino county employees are

heading back to work today, just five days since 14 people were killed by syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik. federal agents are now reviewing evidence taken from enrique marques jr., farook's neighbor and next door neighbor. while authorities have yet to question marques, they believe marques provided the two simi automatic rifles used in the massacre. sources tell cbs news they are analyzing gun store surveillance video showing marques and farook together. gera says the two men attended the same high school and were close. >> when he would go with syed and work on their cars, they were happy and you see them jumping around and laughing. >> reporter: tral central to the investigation now is whether farook's wife is said to have pledged her allegiance to isis on facebook just before last week's attack. loretta lynch says they are trying to find out more about her background in pakistan and saudi arabia. >> we are working closely with our foreign counterparts to gather that information. it will be a long process.

it will be an exhaustive process. >> reporter: isis has claimed the couple has followers. officials in the u.s. say there is no evidence the couple was part of a larger terror network. chris martinez, cbs news, san bernardino, california. police in london are treating a knife attack at a train station as a terrorist incident. video shows the chaotic scene on saturday in east london. the man wielding the knife lunges at bystanders and at officers. witnesses say he yelled "this is for syria." one person suffered serious injuries and the man is charged with attempted murder. the justice department is expected to launch an investigation this week of chicago's police department in the wake of the deadly laquan mcdonald shooting. jesse jackson joined hundreds of protesters marching sunday in downtown chicago. this the demonstration followed the release of documents showing police accounts of the 2014 shooting differ from video of the incident. >> we have a voice and we need to be heard. we don't like the corruption in the city.

on friday, the cartel failed to agree to production costs. stock markets in asia were mix odd last week's u.s. jobs report. nikkei gained 1% and hong kong's stock market lost 1%. wall street made its biggest gains since september following friday's announcement of a month of job gains. it brought last week's trading into the black. the dow gained 44 points last week. the s&p gained one. the nasdaq added 14. compensation for private university presidents continues to climb. an annual survey by the chronicle of higher education found a 5.6% jump between 2012 and 2013 to a median of 436,000. the top earner is columbia university's president with $4.6 million in total compensation. disease is attacking the world's banana crop and threatening the fruit for extinction. it makes up 99% of the world's export. the fungus is a more potent

this cell phone video shows guards throwing a houston student to the ground. one of the guards kicked and punches the fan repeatedly. another video shows this fan being tackled. contemporary services corporation, or csc, is a private security company hired by the university of houston for the season. online, people are outraged bill the guards' aggressive behavior. many commented on the university of houston's facebook page that they didn't have any problem rushing the field at other games. student robert laredo posted this video to his facebook page saying, you kicked my face to where my glasses fly off, then you want to punch me. before all this, it was a great game. houston athletic vice president hunter yurachek responded online with this statement. quote.

csc said in a statement, it's aware of the event and, quote. >> important to note the american athletic conference does not prohibit fans from rushing the field after a game. in sports now. it wasn't easy, but the carolina panthers are still perfect. it took five touchdown passes from cam newton. the last one coming with just over a minute left to secure the win. newton threw for 331 yards. carolina beat the saints 41-38 and at 12-0, is the only remaining unbeaten team in the nfl. malcolm jenkins returned an interception 99 yards and the philadelphia eagles stunned the new england patriots 35-28. it's the first time the patriots have lost back-to-back regular

it's been a lean time for the nation's orchestra as the old classics simply aren't filling the seats any more, so some orchestras are taking inspiration from a modern source. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: it may seem impossible to get gamers off the sofa, but a recent performance drew many to a dallas symphony orchestra. they came to hear a symphony. they came to hear organized in a four movement symphony. the show's producer jason paul spent years producing conference luciano pavarotti.

in his personal travels to japan, he learned how popular gaming concerts were there and thought maybe they could also catch on in the united states. when did you know, okay, this is going to click? >> i kind of knew it after the first time i did it in 2004. it was an instant success and a virtual riot at the box office and now we are really at an all-time high. >> reporter: paul says most of the shows on his international daelt delta tour have been sold out, including this one.elta to including this one. fans here in dallas bought 3,000 tickets and spend $10 each on souvenirs. that is a note because orchestras in the u.s. could use the business. the percent of americans attending classical music events dropped from 98% to 29% in 2008. a small increase in ticket sales the past five years hasn't been enough to undo the damage. >> symphony orchestras have to take a look at what the audience demands. >> reporter: katherine cahill is the ceo of the mann center in philadelphia and she says zelda and pokemon concerts have brought in up to 6,000 fans and
