towards san francisco. clouds still hanging around. but blue skies are peeking through. roberta gonzales has fired up the hi-def doppler radar and it's tracking the rain right now. roberta. >> it is live, hi-def doppler radar. we had a front through the bay area between 5:00 and 7:00. winds kicking up to 50 miles an hour. this is our live hi-def doppler radar. and we are picking up a heavy cell of rain at this particular time, gusty winds associated with that right now. it's heading to middleton from cobb. that's a burned-out area from the "valley fire," could potentially cause mudslides. in the eastern portion of the bay area, nothing is going on there. to the south we have some rain showers south of san jose. more rain in the afternoon forecast with the potential of a thunderstorm. we'll talk more about that as the news continues. thank, roberta.

kpix 5's anne makovec has been outside and joins us at the golden gate bridge. how are you holding up? >> reporter: my notebook just blew off the post and smacked me! let me grab that before we litter here at vista point, the golden gate bridge here behind me. the wind has been blustery. i have been hanging ton my hat all day. but we have a break in the rains. this is just a little taste of things to come. this tree was no match for the high winds this morning. years of the drought have left root system dry and unstable. and this truck was in the wrong place at the wrong time. that he crash shut down highway 116 during the early commute. the rest of the highways and bridges saw heavy slow traffic as drivers navigated through one of the first big storms of the season. >> we were surprised to hear it. we are excited that it's finally raining. >> reporter: this couple took advantage of a break in the rain to take a morning run as high surf and large swells

crashed on san francisco's ocean beach. >> got to see a rainbow or two. so that was nice. >> reporter: the nearby great highway was closed this morning because of the possibility of beach sand blowing across the roadway. speaking of sand, homes and businesses all over the bay area are stocking up with sandbags, protecting buildings from whatever flooding may come. >> as many as i can physically fill, i have two seven-foot garage doors to fill and an entryway so i'd like to get it a foot high so i would say at least 20, 30, plus. a lot. >> reporter: and most of cities and counties are providing free sandbags in advance of this big el nino season we are expecting ahead. right now live in sausalito, anne makevoc, kpix 5. let's take you up to lake tahoe. they are getting hit with the biggest snowstorm in two years. the highest peaks could get two to three feet of snow just what

the area needs. and with the christmas season coming up right now. chains required from applegate into truckee and highway 50 east of kyburz. this is caltrans cam on i-80 near donner summit. you can see the wet pavement there. traffic is moving but slowly. snow piling up on the shoulders there. remember, you can track the storm's progress minute by minute all day long with the cbs sf bay area weather app. new at noon the suspect who pistol-whipped a nanny in a violent home invasion in orinda is behind bars. the robber confronted the nanny tuesday outside the home only castillo court. he pistol-whipped her, ransacked the home and stole the family porsche. the nanny is okay. checking some other bay area headlines, ten people have been displaced by an early- morning fire in san francisco's mission district.

flames started in the palace steakhouse on mission street near cesar chavez. it spread to the upper floors. two people had to be rescued off the deck by a ladder truck. crews had the scene cleared in less than three hours. the grand princess cruise ship came back to san francisco after engine problems. some stops were cut out and passengers left the cruise mid cruise. refunds are being offered. and minutes ago a big step towards restoring some bay area wetlands. the peninsula open space trust u.s. fish and wildlife service and others will today watch as a final levee is breached at bair island in redwood city. it's been a project for years designed to protect the tidal area from development. and today more than 100 classrooms in mountain view will be getting emergency lockdown kits all part of a project by the district to improve preparations for emergencies that include fires

and earthquakes. the schools will be getting portable toilets, food rations and water. the public safety foundation is providing kits with a grant from pg&e. the latest in the san bernardino massacre. we have learned the plot for a mass shooting may have started years ago. public records show a much deeper connection between syed farook and his friend enrique marquez, who bought the guns used to kill 14 people last week. those guns were bought three years ago. marquez is related to farook through marriage and hasn't been charged. donald trump continues to weather his storm caused by his comments on banning muslims from entering the u.s. cbs' weijia jang with the results of a new poll that shows his support is growing! >> reporter: despite receiving days of global criticism, donald trump's call for a ban on muslims entering america is not hurting him. the latest cbs news/new york times poll shows trump at 35%.

his highest level of support yet in our poll. the survey was taken before his proposal to ban muslims from entering the u.s. trump told fox news this morning, he is not surprised. >> there's a lot of people agree with me but i certainly didn't do it for poll numbers. >> reporter: his penchant for headlines and his high poll numbers have made it hard for the rest of the gop field to break through. >> people not going to hyperventilate about polls and i'm not going to do what the media has fallen into. we had a major terrorist attack on u.s. soil a week ago yesterday. and now all the talk including the newscasts are dominated by this plan that's never going to happen. >> reporter: while nearly every republican candidate says they disagree with trump on his plan, none of them has said they won't support him if he wins the gop nomination. but one says he is close. >> i hope he changes his rhetoric. i hope he becomes a unifier but if he doesn't and the divisions and the extremism continues, i have to take another look. >> reporter: but stealing support back from trump will be hard. 51% of his supporters say their

raiders coach and hall of f just underwent successful h surgery in a san francisco hospital. surgeons repaired blockages in his heart. no former raider coach just had huck sessful heart surgery at a san francisco surgery. the commissioner spoke to madden yesterday. he sounds great but is frustrated not to be able to go back to work. madden had successful heart surgery. he is now 79 years old. new at noon, bodies line the street of chicago this morning. it was all part of a die-in to protest the killing of a black teen. police released footage every an officer shooting 17-year-old laquan mcdonald 16 times. it was organized by medical students who are calling for the mayor to step down. >> do you think the police would ever treat you the way they treat me? and the answer is no. and that is wrong! and that has to change in this

[ voice breaking ] >> he made the emotional plea to appease critics. he vowed to work to repay relationships between the police and communities of color in the city. protestors showed up at a san francisco police commission meeting calling for the resignation of police chief greg suhr. [ yelling ] >> all this after last week's police shooting of mario woods, who was carrying a knife when five san francisco officers gunned him down in the bayview last wednesday. the chief asked the county for more nonlethal weapons like tasers. a dramatic moment on a busy pavement in london is caught on camera. this is showing the roof of a three-story building. pedestrians were walking in the area. high winds caused the collapse and sent bricks falling, as well. no one was hurt. also in london, a store surveillance camera caught this thief and his unique getaway vehicle. take a close look.

three full inches of rain in venado. mount tam over 2.5. look at santa rosa. .6" of rain. san francisco .25." .4" in san jose. still more -- .04" in san jose. still more rain is coming. we had sprinkle just roll through san jose. across the north bay we had scott checking in from whisper pines, this is a big cell containing strong downpours in excess of 25 miles per hour. we have a cell that wants to work towards the mount vaca area. look at that scene there. we have some haze and perhaps a little bit of light rain in the distance there. currently, we have temperatures in the 50s and 60s. now, these temperatures have barely moved since 4:30 this morning. pretty consistent. this is a frontal boundary. behind it we have a lot of unsettled air so we have to keep scattered showers in your afternoon and evening forecast. this is our futurecast. you can clearly see by 6:00

the 1950s romance, "carol" the way the golden globe nominations were announced this morning in hollywood. the 1950s romance carole led the way with 5 nominations including best drama. the big short a comedy scored 4 nominations. the frontier epic storing leonardo dicaprio got 4 and joining the pack at 4 is the movie about steve jobs. the winners will be announced january 10. some say it's a medical breakthrough, others say it's huge. team of veterinarians at cornell university have succeeded with the first-ever litter of test tube puppies. much like human ivf, these beagles embryos were fertilized in a petrie dish. they are happy healthy and looking for homes. some remember him as the deputy chief of staff to former mayor gavin newsom. will you others -- but others

they see him as the ultimate godfather. >> he is turning boys into responsible young men in san francisco's bayview. and sharon chin introduces us to this week's bay area jefferson award winner. >> reporter: thanks to dwayne jones, you will see boys in the bayview with t-shirts that read: "school is my thing." they don't just wear it. they are learning to live it. >> we're taking water and sunshine and making fuel to run a toy car. >> reporter: a lesson in renewable energy inspires 9- year-old isaiah simpson to think big. >> reporter: that's the goal. to get underserved boys aged 7 to 11 excited about learning, creating, achieving. this is urban ed academy, a 5- year-old program that serves more than 300 boys at the ymca in the bayview-hunters point neighborhood. founder dwayne jones is preparing them to excel. >> these are the kinds of jobs that will be available when they are working age. so we are trying to prep them for the things that they will see and have the foundation necessary to be successful in that. >> reporter: many of the boys don't have a father at home.

storm drains and filling and volunteer coaches serve as mentors at urban ed academy. they teach academics, character development, health, recreation and community service for 6 hours on saturdays. and the boys see tangible results. their truancy and suspension dropped and grades jumped up, all by about 80%. >> you did this right and you did this perfect. >> reporter: though the program is for third through fifth grade boys, graduates can become junior mentors like 12- year-old gregory bolds. >> i want to be an architect when i grow up so i need a lot of math and engineering skills to do that. >> reporter: his mother credits dwayne for keeping her son on the right track. >> living in the bayview is challenging; and just trying to keep him focused sometimes without mentorship, i don't know if i would be able to do it on my own. >> we have really high expectations for these boys. they clearly have a lot of energy. and when channeled in the right direction, they accomplish amazing things. >> reporter: so for giving boys
