in the bay area. tenants at an oakland apartment building woke to the sound of a massive eucalyptus tree crashing on their roof. the man who lives at the apartment says the awning on the roof prevented the tree from falling through a window near his two-week-old daughter who was sleeping and this isn't the first time a tree fell there. >> another tree fell several months ago. supposedly they had assessed that the trees were structurally sound but that's not the case obviously and what we are trying to do hopefully is bring attention to the property managers and oakland. >> the man said it created a leak in his bedroom, as well. the sun may be out in some places, but the storm's effects are still felt at the coast. huge waves rolling in at pacifica. chopper 5 overhead showing the impact of a high surf warning that's in effect up and down the northern california coast. the pirate pacifica is closed for a -- the pier at pacifica

is closed for a second day. waves and swells are pounding the seawall. there was a coastal flood advisory in effect this morning. this is the embarcadero. the water was right at the level of the sidewalk. a high tide, high surf and runoff from rains pushed water up in low-lying areas. did this wake you up overnight? some parts of the bay area experiencing thunder and lightning even some hail. it was coming down about 8:00 last night. we heard from people in hayward and castro valley who also heard the rumbling and in san ramon, check out the hail. the woman who took these photos says she saw and heard it all along with lightning and thunder. then small pieces of ice falling from the sky. and there's still some unsettled weather out there. roberta gonzales tracking every bit of it on hi-def doppler. roberta. >> reporter: good afternoon, but first we are going to go lead and take a look at levi's

stadium because this is an encouraging sign. we have some clearing. we have a little blue sky. boy, doesn't that look pretty? by the way, 58 days until super bowl 50. here's how we stand the past 24 hours. nearly .25" of rain in san jose right there in the santa clara valley to over half inch in san francisco. in the east bay approach nine- tenths of an inch of rain most of that overnight. and this is our live hi-def doppler radar, a little bit of activity right there just outside saratoga heading towards morgan hill. lingering showers are dissipating. we'll have more about the weekend coming up. the snow is still coming down in the sierra. some fresh powder coming down this morning. they are expecting up to three feet of snow in the highest peaks. great news for ski resorts after several bleak years. the next round of weather on sunday will add more to the base. if you are heading up, carry

chains. remember, you can track the storm's progress minute by minute all day long with the cbs sf bay area weather app. new at noon dozens of protestors crowded the steps of san francisco city hall in response to the police shooting death of mario woods last week. chopper 5 overhead a march from a mission that ended about an hour ago. the crowd made up of lincoln high school students. this is just a part of the growing outcry over the shooting death of woods, who was armed with a knife at the time. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san francisco, where plans were just announced to file a federal lawsuit over his death. >> reporter: a federal civil rights suit was filed this morning. at a press conference here they showed pictures of mario woods's body at the time of the autopsy. very graphic pictures showing bullet holes wounds. they also showed new control phone video that was taken at the time of the shooting. here's how one of the lawyers

explains it. >> it happened here. if you look at mario woods' hands to the side they are not in a raised manner. we don't even know if there's any visible in his hands at this moment. >> reporter: mario woods was shot by police in the bayview on december 2 armed with a kitchen knife. he is accused of using it to stab someone earlier in the day. officers say he came at one of them with the knife and that they had no choice but to open fire. and police have not released information on how many bullets did hit woods but burruss said that civil rights -- civil rights lawyer john burruss said officers shot woods 20 times as he walked away. >> i just think it's an affront and an insult for the african- american community that that much fire power was being used and against a relatively small person at a time when that

person was not committing any crime. >> reporter: woods' mother was at this morning's announcement. obviously, distraught, she said the police handled the shooting poorly all the way through. she actually found out about her son's death through facebook. the san francisco police department has been using this as a call at least the chief has to, um, try to get tasers in the hands of his officers saying it would be another option rather than using deadly force. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. a couple behind that mass shooting in san bernardino apparently had a hard time reaching out to islamic extremists abroad. a government source says it appears that many of sayed farook and tashfeen malik's overtures were refused because they were afraid of getting caught. the "l.a. times" reports they were in the final stages of planning a larger attack at a school or a college. and the fbi is looking into the threat in santa clara that

forced the evacuation of the center for american-islamic relations. kpix 5's keit do says this isn't the first threat. >> reporter: hazmat marched in and out of the council on american-islamic relations for hours after a letter in the mail led to a 911 call. >> like a white powder substance that was unidentifiable inside the envelope. >> reporter: the building on scott was evacuated. three staffers who kpix 5 spoke to on monday about islam phobia and donald trump were taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. >> we are hoping that the substance was harmless but i think that folks are on edge. and at the same time, feeling defiant that we will not be silenced. we are working to protect the civil rights of all americans. >> reporter: directly across the street from cair, the muslim community association, the largest mosque in the bay area, had security street side -- had security on the street to keep trouble out. >> a place of prayer and solace and people shouldn't worry about their safety. >> reporter: since paris and san bernardino, muslims say hatred and hostility have ramped up even in the bay area.

sunday, men praying at lake chabot regional park in castro valley were attacked by a woman with an umbrella and coffee. inside the cair offices, at least a dozen hateful phone calls have come through in the past week. >> all it takes is one crazy person to do something and a lot of people's safety could be compromised. >> reporter: cair's national headquarters in washington, dc was also evacuated after they got a letter with white powder in it, as well. in santa clara, kiet do, kpix 5. meanwhile, new cbs news poll released this morning shows that nearly 6 in 10 americans say the u.s. should not ban muslims from entering the country. but support splits along party lines. 54% of republicans think it's a good idea while most democrats and independents oppose that idea. the public is divided on whether the federal government should keep a database on muslims in the u.s. the federal aviation administration investigators will be at the scene of a medical helicopter crash in kern county today. four people died when the

chopper went down in heavy rain and fog on the flight to a bakersfield hospital. the crash site is near the town of mcfarlane. everyone on board died. they include the pilot, a nurse, a paramedic and patient. today santa clara county investigators released two photos to try to find the victims whose cats may have been abducted and killed. prosecutors say police found these two cat collars inside robert farmer's car. they are also trying to find the owner of a dead orange tabby cat also allegedly found with the san jose man when they arrested him a couple of months ago. he is accused of killing cats in september and october. coming up, concerned community members come face to face with their sheriff. what she says she is willing to consider after allegations of racism at the santa clara county jail. >> they are on the holiday season's top wish list but they are catching a lot of heat. why some airlines are going as far as banning hover boards off planes. >> and we have bacon in the house, the dog, along with dr. jill chase, who is talking

with community members who voiced their concerns about ty jail. new at noon, the santa clara county sheriff met with community members who voiced their concerns about racism at their county jail. an investigation into the use of force inside the jail uncovered evidence of racist and offensive texts being isn't by deputies. published stories about the texts prompted community leaders to ask for today's meeting. >> covered in protective gere santa clara hazmat crews marched in and out of the council on american-islamic relations -- [ incorrect audio ]

>> okay. that was the wrong tape. so we'll move along here. there are a lot of christmas wish lists out there but don't bring your hoverboard on a plane. why some airlines are banning them. >> reporter: already one of the season as hottest gifts, it appears hover boards are continuing to heat up. literally. a writer from alabama posted this video saying his board caught fire. this year's must have gift is finding its way on to some less popular lists. on thursday, the nation's three largest airlines banned the scooters from flight. they are concerned about the toy's lithium ion batteries. >> they ignite and catch fire very violently. >> reporter: cell phones, tablets and lap phones use low wattage lithium ion batteries which are within faa regulations. in a statement, delta pointed to the size and power of the

lithium ion batteries in the hover boards and found the strength of the batteries often exceeded government limits for what's allowed on board an aircraft. one manufacturer blames cheap knockoffs for the problem saying, they don't compromise when it comes to using the highest quality parts and urged customers to be aware of affectunits being sold on the internet. according to sean cain the founder of the safety institute the hugely popular products may eventually be recalled. >> they are considered toys. but in fact they are not. so at the end of the day you have a product that doesn't have to meet any safety requirements finding its way to the u.s. market. >> airlines aren't the only ones moving away from those boards. online retailer overstock.com says it will stop selling the popular product due to growing safety concerns. we have more wet weather on the way. let's check in with roberta. >> i got to tell you, our weather watcher were put to the test over the past 24 hours and everybody came through just great. checking in on our morning show and also on our noon newscast

[ laughter ] >> we love it, dana. thanks for being so optimistic and making us smile here at kpix 5. we have the rain showers now tapering off. now, this morning, a lot people were asking me about the new storm that was moving in. that was just actually the wraparound moisture associated with the cold front in the bay area yesterday. right now lingering active in morgan hill with light to moderate rainfall and for the most part the rain is out of here. i giggled a little bit because this is so beautiful, isn't it? look at the different cloud formations. look at the clean fresh blue sky. look at the temperatures how much they have cooled off into the 50s. high surf warning has been

extended until 5:00 tonight for west swells up to 28 feet lapping onshore. meanwhile, see all these chunky clouds? this is unsettled air with the passage of yesterday's cold front stow therefore we could have a random shower. here's your saturday. we'll see increasing clouds from the north, leading edge of a brand-new storm that's it by the lunch hour. slicing across the central bay, this is a cold front again nothing to do with el ninos. and it's a one-two punch. it's the second storm in a matter of four days. we'll see easily up to an inch of rain in the bay area with that sunday wet system. right now that winter storm warning has expired but your ski report in tahoe and all the way northstar and heavenly and squaw, everybody reporting up to two feet of brand-new powder. as far as your sunset is concerned, 4:51. and temperature-wise into the 50s. a northwest breeze 10 to 20 miles per hour. there is a look at your extended forecast. storm number 2 is queued up

let's kick it off. >> so i wanted the holiday season to be an uneventful fun time and so we provided graphics with live information to let you know what to watch for in terms of things they are not okay. and you can see from the list here that i have tinsel there. if you use tinsel and you see it come out as if they were having a bowel movement, don't pull it. you can injure them severely. >> how about some foods? we're all eating all this rich food. >> yeast dough is one of the biggest risks at this time of year expanding inside. so i put it's yeast dough like bread because it expands. i didn't know but rhubarb. it's so stringy that it actually causes severe stomach problems. >> and plants like a poinsettia, stuff you have around. >> right. poinsettias are actually -- they are actually not super toxic the way these guys are.

they can cause some mild toxicities but these are very, very toxic. >> okay. well, i know we're short and sweet. pine needles too. >> no christmas tree water. very important. it may have pesticides, fertilizer, aspirin which is toxic. so make sure they don't have access to that. >> very good. bacon, why you terrific. data to better target their marketing strategies and analysts help gather this information, study it to pinpoint trends and ultimately help sharpen a sales pitch. the data is also used to improve products and services. market research analysts in the bay area earn nearly $88,000 a year. you'll need a college degree to land one of these positions, but you don't necessarily need to have studied marketing in school. many analysts have a background in math or statistics, social sciences or communications. after all, gathering data is clearly a science but determining what the data means can often be an art. i'm jill schlesinger for kpix 5. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
