muni lines. in the sierra there's a winter storm warning. heavy show is falling and the wind is whipping through the mountains making for treacherous conditions for anyone heading to the high country. >> first let's look at the hi- def doppler. after a dramatic morning most of the rain has headed south and out of the bay area but there will be a few showers tonight. next, rain totals more than an inch in the santa cruz inch and three-quarters of an inch here in san francisco. .46 in napa. finally tonight showers will be ending with gusty winds remaining. the forecast is coming up in a few minutes. >> the storm has lost cargo washing up in the form of giant shipping containers. that's in pacifica. two have shown up near rock away beach. they slid off a ship that left the port of oakland headed to seattle. a total of 12 empty containers went off the deck and into the

water late friday night. if they are properly sand and land in the water at just the right angle, they can float. but it's more than likely they are on the bottom of the ocean. >> the storm is also creating havoc in coastal counties. streets have flooded, people are using boats to get around. good luck getting to the post office. the water is so high people can't get to the building or the drop boxes on the street. >> we've kind of got a perfect storm here where we had rainfall the last two day, and very high storm event this whole last week. the waves were as high as 25 feet. >> this is what it looks like where the wind knocked down several power poles. other parts of the bay are preparing for what could be a

long and wet couple of months. >> reporter: with all eyes on the skies and every raindrop holding the promise of drought relief, the russian river torn of gurnville knows the power veal anyone yow all too well. >> all these streets were covered with water. >> reporter: the realtor was here in 1986 when heavy rains raised the river and the granddaddy of all floods hit this town. many houses were completely sub merged -- submerged, and the government paid out millions to homeowners, just as back in 1955. >> i said, why don't they just pay once and lift the houses. everybody laughed at me and thought, you're crazy. >> reporter: but fema didn't think socht they began paying for property owners to raise their homes. so in some places, gurnville is a town on stilts. >> some people made money.

as far as i am concerned, it was kind of a scan. but that's gurnville ii. >> reporter: but the lessons of the past have made this place uniquely prepared to deal with whatever el niño serves up. >> i'm not one that likes rain, but i'm praying for it this year. three years of drought is not helpful. >> reporter: but if we have that, this town gets slammed. >> maybe, maybe not. we're prepared. >> reporter: john ramos, kpix 5. >> many locals believe the flood of 1986 was made worse bey the government's release of too much water from a dam up river. new video is released after a deadly shooting by two sheriff's deputies. officers fired 33 shots at nicholas robertson yesterday, killing him. the incident is generating another debate about the use of excessive force. security video and photos show the 28-year-old man had a gun in his hand.

authorities say he refused to drop it. witnesses at the nearby gas station feared for their lives. >> we've interviewed those witnesses, and they expressed grave concern that they believe the suspect was actually going to shoot them because they clearly saw him with the firearm in his hand. >> investigators say robertson was crawling on the ground and continued to hold the gun as deputies kept firing. a .45 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. members of the black community are demanding an independent investigation. also an investigation is underway in san mateo after an officer-involved shooting. police were called about a disturbance at lorrie meadows drive and old county road last night. officers say they opened fire as the suspect tried to run them over. they caught up with him at 39th avenue and gilles drive. 31-year-old kendall hager of albany is facing several felony charges. the gunshot wound is not life threatening. >> a fatal police shooting

mostly dry conditions. at this hour a few rogue showers here and there. the numbers chilly. san francisco 50. 48 at livermore, 46 in santa rosa but notice the golden gate bridge looks dry. hi-def doppler shows you the aftermath of that powerful cold front that pressed through this morning at 8:00 in the north bay, later for the south bay and east bay, but left between an inch and half an inch behind for much of the bay area. right now widely scattered cells, mostly offshore. that sets the tone for the rest of the evening. satellite and radar shows the action is now beginning to dry out. we are getting brisk northwesterly winds and house. but they're getting snow. 45-mile-per-hour winds, white- out conditions in places with 12 to 20 inches of fresh powder above 7,000 feet between now and tomorrow morning. very long delays out there in

the sierra. futureshows this. you can see -- futurecast shows this head out tomorrow. there will be some patchy fog but just patchy because these winds are strong enough to clear everything out. a fairly stung monday. visibility should be fantastic. nice monday on tap. nice but windy. gusts you can see there. along the shoreline, half moon bay, it will be a windy start. it is going to take awhile for the winds to abate but they will by tomorrow evening at least be down to the 20 miles per hour range. so a gusty and windy monday on that. here is what's happening. a few showers tonight, then chilly and windy and sunny for monday. then high pressure builds in. the week ahead will be mostly sunny and dry for the first time in awhile it looks like we have dried out. look at that dead on cue, a plane landing at the airport at san jose. partly cloudy and chilly on monday, sunny and a mostly dry
