>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette goodrich. we begin with breaking news in the search for a small plane last seen leaving san jose. the plane took off from reed hill view airport around 4:00 this afternoon. it was bound for henderson, nevada near las vegas. but it dropped off the radar just south of bakersfield. and tonight, a local tv station in bakersfield is reporting some debris has been found on a roadway there. but at this point, there is no confirmation it is from the missing plane. it is also unclear how many people were on board. >> at the time the plane disappeared, there was rain. and there were low ceilings in the bakersfield area. but there is no word on if weather was involved in whatever may have happened.

by the way, the futurecast model shows that more rain will march into the north bay tomorrow morning and head south later in the day. all in all, sunday is shaping up to be wet later in the day. and there is more rain after that. we will have the details when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. a cal frat house looks more like a crime scene after a young man was found dead inside. the body was discovered at the pi kappa fie house. police are calling this death suspicious. emily turner is there. >> reporter: there are a lot more questions than answers. we don't exactly know. neither do police at this point know what happened inside that frat house. all we know is they showed up here at 7:30 this morning. they said that they tried to bring this young man back to life, but unfortunately, he was dead on the scene. they taped off the front of the frat house. they are treating it like a

crime scene. but they don't know or are not releasing how he died at this point. we know he is in his early 20s . we don't know any of those things but we know a fire alarm went off around 12:30 last night. police are not saying if it was a party. in fact, people inside this fraternity are not saying much as all as you are about to hear. >> can we talk to you? >> i'm sorry no. i'm not in the best position to answer anything. >> reporter: was he a brother of yours? >> i'm not a resident so i don't know much about it. >> reporter: were you here last night? >> no. >> reporter: no one will talk, but we do understand that they are national organization has told them not to talk to the media. we no that friday was the last day of finals and a lot of students are packing up and heading home. so again, we are just waiting to hear more information from

police. on exactly what happened inside this fraternity. reporting live in berkeley, emily turner, kpix5. in alameda, a driver died after his speeding suv plunged into the oakland estuary. the suv sank to the bottom trapping him inside. our mark kelly spoke with a good samaritan who dove in to help. >> reporter: emergency crews pulled the water logged suv out of the oakland estuary while residents tried to wrap their heads around what they were seeing. >> that couldn't have happened right? >> reporter: brian patrick was working nearby when someone came into his store yelling for help. >> someone came in yelling is there anybody who knows how to swim? the car crashed into the water. >> reporter: emergency crews got the unusual call around 7:00 this morning. >> the vehicle went through the parking lot. over that large sidewalk area. through the metal ring into the waterment the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed. >> reporter: before trained rescuers go there, they tried to rescue the driver.

the vehicle completely underwater. >> they were saying this were bubbles. i didn't think about it. i just get in the water, try to get to the guy. >> reporter: unfortunately, the cold water also dark, just before sunrise, proved too challenging for brian. >> it becomes completely black. i can't even see my hands. >> reporter: a trained swimmer from alameda fire was able to pull the driver from the vehicle, but the man died before getting to the hospital. in alameda, mark kelly, kpix5. in san francisco, a 55-year- old man is in critical condition after rescuers pulled him from the water at ocean beach. rescuers reported seeing him fall from the rocks below the cliff house restaurant. by the time rescuers got to him, he was 50 yards from shore and floating face down. they pulled him to shore and performed cpr and the man did regain consciousness and was rushed to the hospital. onto campaign 2016 now in

new hampshire where the democratic presidential candidates squared off tonight in their final debate of the year. cbs reporter weijia jiang has the highlights. >> reporter: bernie sanders quickly put the data breach scandal behind him during the democratic presidential debate in new hampshire. the democratic national committee says sappedders staff improperly accessed valuable information compiled by hillary clinton's campaign. >> i want to apologize to my supporters. this is not the type of campaign that we run. >> reporter: clinton accepted his apology. sanders also claimed this is the second time the dmc accidentally released private data. the first was two month ago and his campaign immediately reported the problem. with the san bernardino mass shooting still fresh on voters minds, the candidates debated national security and fighting terrorism. >> the first line of defense against radicalization is in the muslim american community. >> reporter: martin o'malley

attacked sanders and clinton on their gun control records. >> secretary clinton changes her position on this. every election year it seems. having one position in 2000 and campaigning against president obama and saying we don't need federal standards. >> reporter: the candidates agreed on one subject. gop front runner donald trump. they slammed many of his ideas including banning muslims from entering the u.s. >> he is becoming isis' best recruiter. >> somebody like trump comes along and says i know the answers. the answer is that all of the mexicans, they are criminals an rapists. >> reporter: the first votes will be counted in the iowa caucuses on february 1. weijia jiang, cbs news, manchester, new hampshire. back in the bay area, dozens of democrats showed up at the cafe to cheer on their candidates. among this group, there was a clear favorite. >> i think hillary clinton is doing a great job uniting

democrats. reminding us we have far more in common with each other than the opposition. and specifically taking on donald trump. we need to engage each other. not demonize each other. >> as for what may have been hillary's most popular comment of the night, we will get to that a bit later. >> on the republican side, jeb bush had some strung words for front runner donald trump today. >> just one other thing. donald trump is a jerk. calling bush " incompetent and dumb as a rock." local landmarks are getting into the spirit of the football season. the ferry building in san francisco is sporting a giant 50 tonight. that is exactly how many days are left until superbowl 50. special superbowl 50 statues will also be on display accidentally released private data the bay area. from now until game day. the first of ten sculptures featureing the number 50 was unveiled today at san francisco city hall. along with giant gold numbers, it features rep replicas of superbowl rings. >> these 50s will help celebrate the history of the superbowl. this is the past 49 superbowl rings. future 50s might showcase game day footballs. official ticket ifs the 49 superbowls. confetti. trophies. each one will commemorate a bit of history of superbowl. >> also today, levi stadium flipped the switch on its count down scoreboard. 50 days until its biggest game

attacked two officers who were sent there to take him into custody. it is unclear what he was wanted for. police say attempts to subdue the man with a stun gun were unsuccessful an officers were forced to open fire after the man reached for one of their guns. in wisconsin, police are looking for the gunman who opened fire inside a busy shopping mall. it happened this afternoon in madison. witnesses say a fight broke out among a group of young men in the middle of the mall. then, someone started shooting, sending panicked shoppers scrambling for cover. >> my wife and i were inside. and i saw a flood of customers, women, children, just running toward the back. in american eagle. >> a 19-year-old in the group was shot in the leg. another bullet grazed a mall employee. both are expected to be okay. so far, no arrests. relatives of the couple behind the san bernardino shooting rampage returned to their redlands home today to

clean it out. syed farook's mother was seen on the property loading things into a moving van. his father was also there. neither spoke to the media. during their brief visit to san bernardino last night, the president and first lady bet privately with the families of all 14 of the victims killed in the december 2 massacre. among them, mandy pifer whose husband died shielding a young colleague. >> very intimate meeting. it wasn't just sorry for your loss, we are out of there. they were there over two hours. >> despite the pain and the heart ache they are feeling, they couldn't be many inspired. drivers are getting a gift at the gas pump this holiday season. for the first time in almost seven years, the national average has dropped below $2 a gallon. more than two-thirds of gas stations nationwide are selling

it for 1.99 or less. prices in california are still well above the mark. the average is 2.68 a gallon. it is a little cheaper in oakland and san jose. 2.64. and a little steeper in san francisco at 2:75. a muddy mess for some homeowner ins the hollywood hills. a water main caused massive mud slides down the hollywood hills. it happened this afternoon. some residents are digging out from as much as eight feet of mud. one resident is surprised their house is still standing. >> i left my girlfriend's house. i was really worried. i said, i looked at her and id said this could cave in. this could be a much bigger problem. >> the cast iron water main was installed in 1952. never been replaced. neighbors will soon face a water rate hike in part to help replace aging piping. well get this. it was a star wars spoiler that

[ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> clinton is a 2-1 front runner in most polls but in a post debate survey, voters gave this debate to bernie sanders. we had a chance to drain and dry. rainfall amounts in this last little system, they have a half inch of rain in oak and. a little less in if east bay. something like that. there is more on the way tomorrow afternoon as we look live at the ferry building and the numbers right now. in concord, it is 44. san francisco, 49. and in santa rosa, down to 39 degrees. we look at the ferry building which has the number 50 emily turner blazenned on it in honor of the 50th superbowl that will be aired on channel 5 come february and in the bay area. here is what is happening. more low pressure is beginning to spill moisture into the pact northwest with rain touching the olympic peninsula and heading into seattle in the

north and work its way down to portland and eventually to the bay area by tomorrow morning. futurecast bears it out. there's the increasing clouds. rain is beginning to work its way into marin county. and then as we again to roll into the afternoon hours, the rain spreads south and everybody gets a bit of a dose from this. about a quarter inch or so on average. the raiders are taking on the packers. yeah. tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. cloudy, showery, game time temperature of 59 degrees. at the same time, the 49ers will be playing as well. and the game time temperature again in the 50s and a chance of showers developing during the game. and that game will be broadcast tomorrow afternoon at channel 5. rainfall, the upcoming week showing a series of systems coming into california. all ushered in with the low pressure to the north and the high to the south. five plus inches of rain up

around mendocino county. for us, rain amounts fall to about an inch totals by the time we hit thursday. christmas looks to be dry. but on the cool side. we will get increasing clouds tonight. the rain will spread south on sunday. it will be rainy tuesday and thursday. the rain is affecting the camera on the golden gate bridge. snow above 3500 feet in the mountains. 4 to 12 inches of new snow this time tomorrow night and the snowiest time will be tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow by midnight. futurecast shows between now and tuesday night, they will pick up as much as 17 inches of snow. if you are headed out, it will be rainy. 40s will do it for the most part. sunrise tomorrow morning at 7:21 a.m. first the numbers. the reason i almost skipped over them. we will all be in the mid 50s tomorrow. about this time of the year.

extended forecast tries to pinpoint when we get rain tomorrow. mostly on tuesday. lingering shower monday. then tuesday, and again we have another system coming in thursday. it is is a week of on again of again rain. it will be on sunday. and on tuesday, and on thursday. numbers all week will be in the 50-degree range. christmas day. we dry it out. we go to partly to mostly cloudy conditions and saturday, we continue to drain and dry. but a cool chilly and somewhat wet week ahead in weather. as for sports, i leave that up to andrea. >> coming none sports, nfl action tonight. we will tell you how this could affect the post season chances. san jose state in the debut out of the auto nation cure bowl. we'll be right back. ,,,,

gets back in this one. todd boyd on the screen pass. just 90 seconds later, the san jose state quarterback takes it himself and runs it in from 42 yards out. under three minutes left to go, the spartans put the game away. potter looking for josh oliver on thursday and goal for the score. and san jose state wins 27-16. the spartans have won their last four bowl games dating back to 1990. golfer jordan spieth checking out the cowboys. ryan fitzpatrick dumpsite to eric dekker giving the jets a lead. now it is tied at 16. randy bulloch nails the field goal and the raiders would have liked the jets to lose, but they win 19-16 improveing to 9- 5 on the season. with the win, the jets move

delasalle topped centennial. they came into the game as the number one team in the country. the spartans came in ranked eighth. in the third quarter, sal trailing. the spartans antoine breaks through for a 63-yard touchdown to tie the game. so, we move to the early fourth quarter. the quarterback anthony sweeney takes it himself. breaks the tackle and runs in 26 yards for the go ahead touchdown and the spartans win the game 28-21 for their seventh state title and second in a row. third quarter. in front, 14-7, shawn riley takes the handoff and weaves his way through the defense. 27 yards. for the touchdown to make it 21- 7. and he would go onto win the title. it was a rough night for the other bay area schools in

the state championship. sacred heart prep fell. and citrus hill won. stanford playing host to texas and the cardinals trailed by 12 in the second half. only down by three. and off the inbound pass, cardinals dorian pinkens tyes the game. but the longhorns isaiah taylor banks one high. off the glass. and straight in. martin and cal. second half, the bears leading. jordan matthews feeds jalen brown for the dunk to give cal a 25-point lead. and the blowout allowed nick kerr to get into the game and he scores his first point of the season. much to the delights of his teammates. the bears win and they are 9-2
